Role Model: Chuck On Tour — Cal Coast Credit Union Open Air Theatre, San Diego
In 6 days · Oct 13 Cal Coast Credit Union Open Air Th…

Somewhere between the second verse and the bridge of 'Blind,' you realized this wasn't just a song—it was a mirror. Role Model writes the kind of music that makes heartbreak feel like a shared language, the tracks you sent to someone at 2 AM not because you wanted them to hear a song but because you needed them to understand how you felt without having to say it. Now he's bringing the Chuck On Tour to San Diego State's Open Air Theatre with special guest Samia opening. The outdoor amphitheater sits on a hill at SDSU where October's warm San Diego night fills the space between songs, and the skyline behind the stage makes everything feel more cinematic than it has any right to. His live shows turn audiences into singalongs—strangers harmonizing on lyrics they each thought were private. If someone sent you 'Forever Oh' or 'Stealing the Show' at a weird hour, this is the show you send them back. Tuesday, October 13 at 7:30 PM. Cal Coast Credit Union Open Air Theatre, 5500 Campanile Dr, San Diego, CA 92182.

Lyrical Exchange Open Mic — Queen Bee’s Art & Cultural Center, North Park
Every Tuesday · Next Oct 13 Queen Bee's Art & Cultural Center,…

Every Tuesday night in a North Park arts center, the mic goes live and the room fills with people who came to say something. Poets who have been carrying a verse in their pocket all week. Musicians who want to test a song on a crowd that actually listens. Comedians working out material that might be brilliant or might be a beautiful disaster. Nobody knows until the words leave their mouth. Lyrical Exchange is not a showcase — it is a conversation. The five-dollar cover keeps it intimate. The room at Queen Bee’s is small enough that you can feel the nervous energy of a first-timer three rows back, and the regulars treat newcomers like they belong because the whole point is that everyone does. The format rotates between spoken word, acoustic music, comedy, and whatever else walks through the door. This is the room where the city’s creative community shows up when they need to be heard, not applauded. Every Tuesday, 8:00 PM – 11:00 PM. Five dollars at the door. Queen Bee’s Art & Cultural Center, 3925 Ohio St in North Park.

Newport Beach Film Festival 2026
In 8 days · Oct 15 THE LOT at Fashion Island, 999 New…

Most festivals make you choose between the movie and the party. This one flatly refuses, and that refusal is the entire personality of the thing. Eight days on the Orange County coast, hundreds of screenings, and a nightly ritual nobody else runs the same way: the country spotlights. Irish night, French night, Latino night, Pacific Rim night — each anchored by a film and then walked straight into a party, so a screening becomes an evening and the evening becomes three conversations you did not plan on having. It is prestige cinema with sand in its shoes. International work that will not surface anywhere else nearby, the people who made it standing in the room, and the particular coastal glamour of toasting a movie under string lights when it ends. Send it to the friend who believes a great film deserves a great party. They have been waiting years for somebody to agree with them out loud.

Coronado Island Film Festival 2026
Nov 4, 2026 Coronado Island (Hotel del Coronad…

You keep running into the same director at the coffee cart. By the third day it stops being a festival and starts being a small town that happens to be showing movies, and the conversations outlast the credits by a wide margin. That is what an island does to one of these. Everything sits inside a walkable village staged around the old hotel, so there is no crush, no shuttle between venues, no rope keeping the person who made the thing away from the person who just watched it. The documentary slate is genuinely strong — the kind of programming a small festival can gamble on because it is not trying to fill two thousand seats. Five days in early November, a short stroll from the beach, in the shoulder season when the island quietly belongs to itself again. Send this to the friend who would rather talk to one filmmaker for twenty minutes than fight a crowd for a premiere.

Medium Build — The King of Having Fun Tour at Observatory North Park
Nov 2, 2026 The Observatory North Park, 2891 U…

You know that feeling when the whole room is moving and nobody rehearsed it — when the bass line picks up and two hundred strangers decide at exactly the same moment that tonight is the night they stop being careful. Medium Build makes music for that moment. Nick Carpenter built this project in a garage in Boise and turned it into something that fills rooms coast to coast with people who never heard the word 'indie-folk' and don't care. The live show is a sweaty, theatrical, grinning mess — brass instruments nobody expected, singalongs nobody planned, and a drummer who looks like he's having more fun than anyone in the building. The Scratch opens. Monday nights at the Observatory have a different energy than the weekend — smaller crowd, louder per capita, everyone there on purpose. If you've never heard either act, that's the point. This is the kind of Monday night that makes Tuesday morning feel like a badge of honor. Rocky Horror Picture Show — Live with Patricia Quinn at Balboa Theatre, San Diego
In 4 days · Oct 11 Balboa Theatre, 868 4th Ave, San D…

Thirty newspaper bags. Six water guns. A roll of toilet paper you will throw at the exact right moment. And Patricia Quinn — Magenta herself — standing on the Balboa Theatre stage in the flesh. The Rocky Horror Picture Show screening is one of those events that exists in its own category. It's not a movie. It's not a concert. It's a participatory ritual that's been running for half a century and shows no sign of slowing down, because every generation discovers it at exactly the right age and never fully recovers. The Balboa Theatre showing features the original cast member Patricia Quinn live and in person, making this more than a screening — it's a pilgrimage. Costumes are encouraged. Props are required. The callback lines are non-negotiable. If you don't know them yet, the person sitting next to you will teach you before the opening credits end. Sunday, October 11, 2026. 7:00 PM. Balboa Theatre, San Diego. Shadowcast troupes run this all over the county on nights nobody advertises, and once you know the callbacks you start looking for them.

THE UNION / Male Tears
Oct 23 – Oct 24, 2026 The Monty Bar, 1222 W 7th St, Los …

Downtown bars that host a goth night usually do it once, discover the crowd drinks less than expected, and quietly stop. The ones that keep going do so because somebody behind the bar actually likes the music. The Union is one of the long-running LA darkwave nights, and Male Tears are the local act most likely to be playing when somebody from out of town asks what the scene sounds like now — synthpop bones, EBM muscle, vocals pitched somewhere between sincere and theatrical. The Monty is small and a little grimy and sits on West 7th where downtown starts turning residential, which is the correct setting; a goth night in a nice room feels wrong to everybody present. Nine at night on Friday the twenty-third of October. Black is not required, merely inevitable.

Animation Is Film Festival 2026 - TCL Chinese 6 Theatres, Hollywood
In 9 days · Oct 16 TCL Chinese 6 Theatres, 6801 Holly…

Everybody tells you animation is for children right up until the year you work out that most of the films that genuinely wrecked you were drawn. This is the festival built for whoever that happened to. Its ninth edition puts Oscar contenders on the same four-day program as a twenty-six-year-old cult picture nobody's studio wanted, which is the entire argument it exists to make. On the awards side: Louis Clichy's Iron Boy, Leah Nelson's Tangles, The Violinist, and the first theatrical showing anywhere of the opening two episodes of Dana Terrace's Knights of Guinevere. But the reason to clear a Friday is further down the grid — the North American premiere of Shingo Natsume's Ghost: End of Night, and a retrospective print of Yoshiaki Kawajiri's Vampire Hunter D: Bloodlust, the 2000 film that underperformed and then quietly became the thing a whole generation pointed at to end the argument about whether animation was a medium or a genre. Opening day starts with Best of Annecy at four in the afternoon, which means the festival's first act is a room full of people watching shorts that will never get a US release. October 16 to 19, at TCL 6 on Hollywood Blvd. Passes and single tickets through the festival.

13th Los Angeles Black Film Festival 2026
Every day · Next Oct 22 The Actors Company LA, 916 N Formo…

The story you carry does not look like the stories that get greenlit. The protagonist is too specific, the neighborhood too real, the ending too honest for a studio to touch. A hundred films have almost told it, and the distance between almost and exactly is the loneliest distance in cinema. The Los Angeles Black Film Festival exists in that gap. Thirteen years running, LABFF takes over The Actors Company in West Hollywood from October 22 through 25 — four days of independent work by Black filmmakers that the mainstream circuit will not surface for another two years, if it surfaces them at all. Shorts. Features. Documentaries. The kind of films where the director is standing in the lobby afterward because they made it with their savings and a borrowed camera and they need you to understand why it matters. The Let Live Theater and Other Space Theater at 916 North Formosa hold maybe a hundred people each. That is the point. At this size you do not just watch the film — you meet the person who made it. Parking is free on site and in the surrounding neighborhood. October 22 through 25, 2026. Screenings at The Actors Company, 916 North Formosa Avenue in West Hollywood.

My Chemical Romance at the Hollywood Bowl -- October 2026
In 14 days · Oct 21 Hollywood Bowl, 2301 N Highland Av…

For a generation that grew up screaming along to Welcome to the Black Parade in bedrooms plastered with band posters, My Chemical Romance at the Hollywood Bowl on October 21 is not just a concert -- it is a summoning. The Bowl's open-air acoustics and the October night sky turn every anthem into something larger than it was on the record, and the crowd will sing louder than the PA system at least twice. MCR's catalog runs from the raw punk fury of I Brought You My Bullets to the theatrical grandeur of The Black Parade to the synth-soaked Danger Days, and a setlist at the Bowl will pull from all of it. The band has been selective about touring since their reunion, making every announced date feel like it might be the last one for a while. Two nights at the Bowl -- different setlists each -- and both will leave you hoarse. The Bowl sits at 2301 N Highland Avenue, just off the 101 in the Hollywood Hills.

San Diego Asian Film Festival 2026 (SDAFF)
Nov 5 – Nov 14, 2026 Reading Cinemas Gaslamp 15, 701 5t…

You sit down in a 200-person theater for a film you could not have seen anywhere else in the country, and the director is in the seat next to you, waiting to talk about it when the credits roll. That is not a rare accident at this festival — it is the rule. For anyone who cares about Asian cinema, this is the most direct path into the full range of what is being made across a dozen countries and cultures, not just the handful of films that reach wide US release. The San Diego Asian Film Festival is one of North America's most significant Asian and Asian American film festivals, presenting over 100 films across ten days from November 5–14. Since 1999 it has been the destination for Asian cinema that has not yet found a theatrical home — often the first place American audiences discover films that later surface in awards-season conversation. Ten days of screenings run across multiple San Diego venues, from world premieres to retrospectives of Asian cinema classics, with real depth in Korean, Japanese, Chinese, Filipino, and South Asian film, plus narrative features, documentaries, shorts, and animation. Filmmaker Q&As are frequent, and the atmosphere is simultaneously cinephile-serious and community-celebratory. For Asian Americans it is one of the few film events where seeing yourself, your family, and your cultural reality onscreen is the rule rather than the exception. Many films here will not be available anywhere else in the US until months later, if ever. Festival passes offer the best value if you plan to see more than three films — single tickets sell out quickly for high-demand titles, and popular films at the main venue fill within hours of the programming announcement. The Opening Night Gala is a social event as much as a screening, and the Programmers Picks section is where to start if you are overwhelmed by choice. SDAFF runs at a moment when Asian and Asian American storytelling has moved from niche to center. Everything Everywhere All at Once, Past Lives, Minari, and the global dominance of Korean film and television have created an audience hungry for more. The festival has been feeding that hunger for 27 years. The mainstream finally caught up.

Las Cafeteras: Hasta La Muerte at Epstein Family Amphitheater — UCSD La Jolla
Sep 2, 2026 Epstein Family Amphitheater, 9480 …

The altar is still warm and nobody told you how to carry this. Your throat tightens at their favorite song, the flowers haven’t wilted yet, and the world moved on without asking if you were ready. Las Cafeteras built a whole show around that feeling. Hasta La Muerte is a two-act theatrical and musical production that walks through the stages of grief the way Día de los Muertos actually works — not as a costume holiday, but as a practice. A real one. The kind where you set a plate for someone who isn’t coming back and you laugh about the time they burned the rice and you cry in the same breath and nobody tells you to stop. The East LA band’s Afro-Mexican fusion — son jarocho roots twisted through hip-hop and cumbia and rock — turns the Epstein Family Amphitheater into the kind of room where strangers hold space for each other’s losses without saying a word. Insider note: this is not a seated-and-polite amphitheater experience. Las Cafeteras audiences dance. They sing back. The zapateado (percussive footwork on a tarima) is participatory — they’ll pull you in. Wear shoes you can stomp in. Wednesday, September 2, 2026 at 7:00 PM. Epstein Family Amphitheater, UC San Diego, 9480 Innovation Ln, La Jolla, CA 92093. Right next to the Blue Line Trolley UCSD Central Campus Station.

Anime Weekend Atlanta 2026 — Atlanta, GA
Nov 19 – Nov 22, 2026 Georgia World Congress Center, Bui…

The American South's longest-running anime convention has been meeting in Atlanta every September since 1997. Anime Weekend Atlanta is where the Southeast's anime fandom comes to recognize itself. Walk the AWA floor on a Thursday night and the energy hits immediately: cosplayers in elaborate handmade builds line the escalators, artist alley tables overflow with original prints and fan art, and the programming halls pulse with AMVs, panel debates, and late-night gaming tournaments that run until 3 AM. The dealers room is legitimately staggering — vintage merchandise, imports, rare figures, and indie creators all packed into a space where you could spend a full day and still miss things. The masquerade on Saturday night is one of the most theatrical cosplay competitions in the country, drawing contestants who have spent months on a single build. AWA moves differently than the mega-cons: it feels less like a trade show and more like a reunion — because for thousands of attendees, it genuinely is. If you grew up watching anime in the South and never found your people, AWA is the answer. This is not for casual fans who think anime is just Naruto and Dragon Ball. It is for people who obsess over seasonal charts, debate subculture lore, and have a hard drive full of unfinished cosplay plans. First-timers frequently describe AWA as the con that finally felt like home. If you are that person — the one who learned Japanese from subtitles and named a pet after a character — this is worth every flight mile. Book your hotel at the World Congress Center Marriott before August or it will sell out — AWA attendees treat the hotel block as sacred and it fills months in advance. Badge pickup lines on Thursday afternoon are brutal; opt for pre-registration and arrive before noon. The dealers room has no ATMs inside — bring cash, bring more than you think you need, and budget for at least one impulse figure you did not plan for. The programming schedule releases about six weeks before the event and fills fast; panel rooms cap out, so plan your must-see events 30 minutes early. The loading dock area outside Building C is where the best spontaneous cosplay photo shoots happen after dark. It is the convention that proved the South has always had its own thriving fan culture — it just needed a room big enough to hold it. AWA 2026 runs November 19-22 at the Georgia World Congress Center, Building C, Atlanta. The Southern con circuit keeps going the rest of the year in far smaller hotels, and the same people build costumes for all of it.

Shrek Rave
Dec 4, 2026 Boardner's by La Belle, 1652 N Che…

At some point in the last few years the internet decided, collectively and without a vote, that an ogre from 2001 was load-bearing. You know this. You have participated in it. What you may not have processed is that it escaped the internet entirely and became a thing you can physically attend in Hollywood, in costume, at ten at night, with several hundred people who made the same decision you did. The thing nobody warns you about is how committed the costumes get. This is not a novelty-headband crowd. People arrive painted green. There are full Lord Farquaads. And because the premise is unserious, everyone is unusually kind — the social anxiety that governs a normal club floor cannot survive a room where the funniest outfit wins. Musically it is throwback anthems and singalongs rather than anything challenging, which is the correct call. Photo ops run all night, costumes are expected, and it goes ten PM to two AM. Friday December 4 at Boardner's by La Belle on North Cherokee, presented by Club Decades. Tickets through club-decades.com. You already thought of the one friend who would lose their mind at this.

Cradle of Filth: Majestic in Death II — The Observatory North Park
Sep 29, 2026 2891 University Ave, San Diego, CA…

Thirty years ago, Dani Filth screamed over a pipe organ on Dusk... and Her Embrace and built a cathedral inside extreme metal that nobody else has been able to replicate since. The Majestic in Death II tour celebrates that anniversary with the kind of theatrical darkness that only a band with three decades of gothic spectacle can deliver. At The Observatory North Park, where the ceiling is low enough that the fog machines transform the room into a crypt, the production hits differently than it does in a festival field — you can feel the bass in your sternum and see the stage paint on Filth's face from the fourth row. Black Satellite, Worm, and Moonspell open, making this a bill designed for the person who keeps a battle jacket in the back of their closet and has been waiting for an excuse to pull it out. Doors at 5 PM, show at 6 PM on Monday, September 29, at 2891 University Avenue in North Park.

There's a sound that belongs to the moment when the streetlights come on and you're walking somewhere you shouldn't be going but can't stop yourself. Interpol has been making that sound for twenty-five years, and it hasn't lost a single watt of its pull. Interpol plays The Rady Shell at Jacobs Park in San Diego on Friday, August 15 at 7 PM, with julie opening. The Rady Shell is one of the most beautiful outdoor concert venues in Southern California — an open-air bandshell on the downtown waterfront with the harbor behind the stage and the skyline framing the whole production. Seeing a band this atmospheric in a venue this cinematic is the kind of alignment that only happens a few times a year. The Rady Shell's open seating and lawn sections mean the experience scales from front-row intensity to blanket-on-the-grass chill depending on where you plant yourself. The venue is at 200 Marina Park Way, walking distance from the Convention Center trolley stop and the Gaslamp Quarter. The kind of night where the venue and the artist are saying the same thing. Bring someone who understands why that matters.

Tribeca Festival 2027 - New York, NY
Jun 3, 2027 Passes on sale Various venues, 50 Varick St, New …

The Tribeca Festival is the American festival that exists because a neighbourhood refused to die. Robert De Niro, Jane Rosenthal and Craig Hatkoff founded it in 2002 to pull people back into lower Manhattan after September 11, and twenty-five years later it has become the most genuinely public of the major festivals - less a market than a city-wide fortnight. The twenty-sixth edition runs June 3 to 12, 2027, across venues in Manhattan, with passes already on sale and submissions open. What it feels like, in practice, is New York in early June doing what it does best: too much happening at once, outdoors, in public. Tribeca long ago stopped being only a film festival. Since 2021 it has programmed television, podcasts, games, immersive work and live audio, and the result is that a single afternoon can take you from a documentary premiere to a podcast recorded live in front of six hundred people to an outdoor screening in a plaza where nobody paid anything. Screenings are routinely followed by conversations, live performance or a reunion of a cast, so a two-hour film becomes a three-hour evening. Red carpets happen on open streets rather than behind a mountain cordon, which is why Tribeca has a reputation for being the festival where ordinary ticket-buyers actually see people. Is it worth it? Yes - and specifically it is worth it for people who assume a major film festival is not for them. Sundance requires a mountain and a car; Cannes requires an industry badge. Tribeca requires a subway ride. If you are the sort of person who likes seeing something before the reviews exist and then arguing about it on the walk to the train, this is built for you. It is not the festival to attend if you want the year's awards contenders; those premiere in the autumn. Tribeca's strength is documentary, New York stories, and first features. What to know before you go: the rush line is real and it works. A screening showing as sold out online will almost always seat most of the rush queue at showtime, because advance sales close early and no-shows are common - locals buy single tickets at the door routinely. Skip the Storytelling Summit and anything staged at the Beacon Theatre if you are watching money; those are the premium tier and the programming is not proportionally better. Do seek out the free outdoor screenings, which are the best value in American festival-going and are where the founding civic purpose is still most visible. There is an Under 25 pass, and a Hudson Opening Weekend pass that covers unlimited priority access from opening day through that first Monday. Tribeca earns its place here because it is the rare cultural institution whose origin story is a civic one and whose present form still honours it. It was built to get people to walk back downtown. It still mostly works like that - which is why knowing it exists, even from three thousand miles away in June, is worth something.

Screamfest LA Horror Film Festival
Oct 6 – Oct 15, 2026 TCL Chinese 6 Theatres, 6925 Holly…

The scariest thing you'll see this year might be a film so new that the person who directed it is sitting three rows behind you, watching your shoulders to see if the jump lands. That's the specific thrill of the oldest, largest horror festival in the country: for ten October nights on Hollywood Boulevard, the next wave of the genre screens for the first time, in the same theaters where the classics met their first audiences. Screamfest has a real track record — it premiered Insidious, Rob Zombie's Halloween, and The Haunting in Connecticut years before they hit wide release — which means the thirty-plus features and shorts here aren't afterthoughts, they're what horror is about to become. The room is exactly what you'd want: Hollywood Boulevard at night, everyone around you loving the genre completely and unironically, the director walking up for the Q&A while the credits still roll. TCL Chinese 6 Theatres, Hollywood — October 7–16, 2026. Festival badges cover all ten days, or buy single tickets and pick your nights. The October air and the marquees on the Boulevard handle the rest.

Little Italy Summer Film Festival 2026 — Amici Park, San Diego
Sep 26, 2026 Free Amici Park, W Date St & State St, …

The marine layer usually arrives around the third act, which is when everyone reaches for the jacket they were told to bring and nobody leaves anyway. Amici Park is a small amphitheatre wedged between restaurants, so the air smells like garlic and jasmine while an Italian film runs with English subtitles and the whole park spends two hours living somewhere else. Cinema Little Italy has been doing this quietly for years, without fanfare, on a patch of grass most of the city walks straight past. The programming rotates week to week — neorealism one Saturday, comedy the next, always something you would never have found on your own. People bring their own blankets and a bottle of something red. Free, outdoors, summer evenings in the heart of the neighborhood. Bring the person who will argue with you about the ending the entire walk home.

DeVotchKa at Belly Up — Solana Beach
Sep 30, 2026 143 S Cedros Ave, Solana Beach, CA…

A sousaphone, a theremin and a bouzouki walk onto a stage on Cedros Avenue, and somehow what comes out sounds like a traveling circus performing in a cathedral while the world ends outside. Nick Urata sings in a tenor that carries the weight of Eastern European folk, Latin bolero, and punk rock all at once, and the band plays instruments that most rock acts have never heard of — sousaphone, theremin, bouzouki — as if they were born with them in their hands. The result is a sound that belongs to no genre and every continent, the kind of thing that makes you realize how small the word indie is when applied to a band whose influences stretch from a Balkan wedding reception to a Mexican cinema. At the intimate North County venue on Cedros, the sound wraps around you like a blanket sewn from every country you have never visited, and you leave knowing that the word eclectic was invented for exactly this. Tuesday, September 30, at 8 PM.

Screen on the Green 2026 — Balboa Park, San Diego
Aug 27, 2026 Free Botanical Garden Lawn, 1549 El Pra…

The California Tower goes dark against the August sky, and below it, a lawn full of strangers settles in for two hours of something they did not plan. The San Diego Museum of Art sets up the screen on the Botanical Garden Lawn, and by sundown the grass is a quilt of blankets and camp chairs and families who carried their dinner in a tote bag because they know the drill. The films change weekly — sometimes a classic, sometimes a crowd-pleaser — but the real draw is the night itself: the silhouette of the California Tower behind the screen, the kids who fall asleep before the second act, the couples who came for the movie and stayed for the quiet walk back through the park after the credits roll. Grab sandwiches from Panama 66's Grab and Go before it closes at sundown. Arrive early for the Lovesac Lounge giveaway if you want the best seat in the house. Free admission. Thursdays in August, screenings begin at sundown (approximately 8 PM). Botanical Garden Lawn, 1549 El Prado, San Diego.

W.A.S.P. - 1984 to Headless
Sep 10, 2026 $54+ The Magnolia, 210 E Main St, El Ca…

Heavy metal has always been theater, and few bands ever staged it harder than the ones who turned Sunset Strip menace into something halfway between a horror movie and a church service. Four decades on, W.A.S.P. is walking its faithful back through the whole arc — from the raw 1984 debut that got them banned in half of America to the newer, darker material — one long communion of leather, volume, and the particular joy of a crowd that never once apologized for what it loves. KK's Priest, led by a Judas Priest founding guitarist, opens the mass. This is not a heritage act phoning it in; it is a scene that raised itself on the fringes showing up for its own. The Magnolia gets loud and gloriously unrepentant. Thursday, September 10, 2026, doors 7pm, show 8pm, El Cajon. If you know, you already know — bring the battle vest and find your people.

Martha's Vineyard African American Film Festival 2026 — Oak Bluffs, MA
Aug 7 – Aug 15, 2026 Oak Bluffs, MA 02557

The conversation happening outside the theater is as essential as the film inside it - filmmakers, producers, actors, cultural critics, and a deeply engaged audience share one island for nine days, and geography forces the kind of creative cross-pollination that does not happen anywhere else. For nine days every August, this festival screens work the mainstream circuit does not reach, with the Atlantic as the backdrop. The setting is not incidental. Martha's Vineyard has been a gathering place for Black families, artists, and intellectuals since the 19th century, and the communities of Oak Bluffs and Vineyard Haven carry that history into the festival. Films premiere here before wider release. Q and A sessions run long because the audience has real questions. This is for the film lover who stays through the credits, wants to know what the director was fighting for, and discovers something in August they will still be talking about in December. If you watch the Oscars wondering why certain stories are never in the conversation, this festival has been telling those stories for twenty-four years - not a place for passive consumption, but for people who care about film as a cultural force and want to see stories that do not get greenlit often enough, told by people who lived versions of them. A few logistics that matter. Ferries book up fast in August; island access is limited and peak-summer demand is real, so plan your ferry to and from the island early, ideally before you buy film tickets. Free parking is available at the PAC. The full itinerary releases in late June on the official website, and individual film and panel tickets go on sale in early summer. A day pass gets you into multiple screenings and is the most efficient way to take in the breadth of the programming. Build buffer time into your schedule - the island itself rewards wandering. The Black Sundance has never been a niche gathering; it is a cultural institution that happens to be held on an island. Twenty-four years of programming amount to an archive of Black American storytelling that belongs alongside any major film festival in the country, and some of the most important films of recent years passed through Oak Bluffs before they reached wider audiences. Oak Bluffs, MA. Several of these films carry on through the rest of the festival circuit before wider audiences ever hear about them.

Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone in Concert — Rady Shell San Diego
Aug 21, 2026 Rady Shell at Jacobs Park, 222 Mar…

The first four notes of Hedwig's Theme have never failed to do the thing they do - and hearing them played by a full orchestra, in real time, while the film runs on a screen above the water, is a different order of the feeling entirely. This is not a concert with some Harry Potter branding stapled on; the San Diego Symphony performs John Williams' complete score for Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone live, synchronized to the movie, every scene he scored - the quidditch match, the troll in the dungeon, the final confrontation. It plays three nights at the Rady Shell, the waterfront amphitheatre on the Embarcadero, with the San Diego skyline behind the stage. The fandom in this city has been waiting a long time, and three nights is still not enough seats for everyone who wants to go. August 21, 22, and 23, 2026, 7pm. Tickets at theshell.org. Book early.

Chicago Air and Water Show 2026 — Chicago, IL
Aug 15 – Aug 16, 2026 1600 N Lake Shore Dr, Chicago, IL …

Jets fly between the buildings and out over Lake Michigan, low enough that the roar reaches your chest a half-second after they pass. The Chicago Air and Water Show does this every August along the lakeshore — free — and two million people show up to feel it. The show occupies the entire lakefront from roughly Fullerton Avenue to Oak Street Beach. The U.S. Navy Blue Angels typically headline, flying synchronized formations at over 700 miles per hour with wing separations measured in feet; the U.S. Army Golden Knights parachute team, the Air Force Thunderbirds, and civilian aerobatic performers fill out a program that runs from about 9am to 4pm on both Saturday and Sunday. The sound alone — a physical, chest-deep roar from aircraft passing at low altitude — is the part no video has ever managed to carry home. If you have never seen military precision aerobatics in person, this is the one to start with, and it costs nothing: no tickets, no registration, just show up to the lakefront. The crowds are enormous, especially on Sunday, but the lakefront is wide enough that even with two million people over the weekend you can find a workable vantage point. Because there is no fence and no gate, families spread out along the grass, the beaches, and the harbor walls, and everyone is looking up at the same sky. It is appropriate for all ages, and for a kid the feeling of that low pass is the kind of thing they describe for years. A few things the veterans know. North Avenue Beach, the primary viewing area, is packed by 8am both days, so arriving by 7:30am gives you the best positioning. CTA buses and the Red, Brown, or Purple lines to the Chicago or Fullerton stations are the practical way in — driving and parking in Lincoln Park on show weekend is brutal. Bring sunscreen, a portable chair or blanket, water, and ear protection if loud noise bothers you. The Blue Angels usually fly Sunday afternoon at peak intensity, and weather delays happen occasionally, so check the official schedule the morning of. This is where the Chicago summer reaches its most cinematic — two million people, the Blue Angels, and Lake Michigan as the backdrop. The show has run continuously for more than 65 years because it produces a feeling of scale that almost no free public event can match. Knowing it exists, and knowing which weekend it falls on, is the difference between watching an American summer and actually catching it.

WWE SummerSlam 2026 -- Minneapolis, MN
Aug 1 – Aug 2, 2026 U.S. Bank Stadium, Minneapolis, MN

Fifty thousand people who all learned to care about this in different decades, in the same building, at the same time - that is the part no title belt can print on a poster, and it is the reason to make the trip. The championships and the storyline payoffs are the official product; the room is the real one. U.S. Bank Stadium turns into a wrestling colosseum for SummerSlam weekend. The main cards run championship bouts, months-long storyline payoffs, and the kind of spectacle that turns a casual observer into a lifelong fan in a single evening. The energy inside a 50,000-seat indoor stadium for wrestling does not resemble any other live event - the crowd is emotionally committed, the narratives are operatic, the production is theatrical. Saturday builds the stakes. Sunday delivers the payoffs. Fan signings and WWE activations run across downtown Minneapolis all weekend. If you have been curious about professional wrestling but never crossed the threshold, this is the entry point. Stadium-scale WWE operates on a different level than a TV taping - the storytelling lands harder when you are surrounded by 50,000 people who have followed these characters for years. For existing fans, SummerSlam is the Super Bowl equivalent: title changes, shocking turns, and moments replayed for decades. A few things worth knowing. Book flights and hotels four to six months out; Minneapolis hotel inventory within five miles of the stadium disappears fast for major events. Lower bowl sections 100-120 give the best proximity and sightlines. The fan events begin Friday before the main Saturday card, and two-night packages are the best value if you can attend both. U.S. Bank Stadium connects directly to downtown's Skyway system, putting pre- and post-show dining and nightlife within walking range, and the North Loop nearby fills with breweries, restaurants, and bars full of wrestling fans all weekend. Minneapolis has hosted the Super Bowl and NCAA Final Four - the hospitality infrastructure is built for major-event crowds, and WWE weekend turns downtown into a reunion for fans arriving from across the Midwest. Professional wrestling is one of America's most underestimated cultural exports - 80 years of mythology and the largest dedicated live entertainment fanbase in the country - and SummerSlam is its championship game. Plan two nights: one to arrive and explore, one to stand inside one of the loudest rooms in American sports entertainment. August 1-2, 2026 at U.S. Bank Stadium in Minneapolis. Tickets on Ticketmaster.

Kevin Smith Live at American Comedy Co — SDCC 2026
Jul 23 – Jul 25, 2026 818 Sixth Avenue, San Diego, CA 92…

The best Comic-Con happens when you leave the convention center. Kevin Smith has run on that principle for over a decade, and his SDCC residency is the proof -- a filmmaker who genuinely cannot stop talking, in a room full of people who genuinely want to listen. From July 23 through 25, 2026, Smith brings four of his signature live formats to the 200-seat American Comedy Co in the Gaslamp Quarter. Thursday opens with Fatman Beyond, Smith's weekly deep-dive into superhero movies and comic book culture, co-hosted with Marc Bernardin. This is the format that predicted the DCU reboot two years before it was announced. The crowd is not passive -- they shout corrections, demand hot takes, and occasionally know more than the hosts. Friday doubles up: Jay and Silent Bob Are In The Hizzhouse brings Jason Mewes for the duo's famously unpredictable chemistry, followed by Comics On With Jay and Silent Bob, a show-and-tell of the week's actual comic books. Saturday finishes with Diary of a Man Child and Hollywood Babble On, Smith's signature irreverent Hollywood storytelling format. The venue seats 200. Comic-Con draws 130,000. The math is the appeal -- this is the show your friends cannot get into. Smith has been doing these SDCC residencies for over a decade, and the regulars treat it like a reunion. The comedy is not polished stand-up; it's a filmmaker who cannot stop talking, in a room full of people who want to listen. Every show is different because Smith does not have a set -- he has stories that have not been told yet. Tickets are 53 dollars per show, 21 and over, with a two-drink minimum. American Comedy Co is at 818 Sixth Avenue in the Gaslamp, walking distance from the Convention Center. Shows sell out -- the 2025 run was gone within hours of announcement.

5 Star Theatricals presents The Wizard of Oz
Jul 10, 2026 2100 E. Thousand Oaks, Fred Kavli …

"Somewhere Over the Rainbow" in a room with real reverb is a different experience than it is anywhere else, and this is a stage built to give it that - orchestra pit, fly space, an acoustic ceiling that makes a live ensemble sound the way it is supposed to. Oz is a show people bring their kids to because their parents brought them, and that generational loop runs visibly through the audience during curtain call, which is worth staying for. 5 Star Theatricals works this room specifically, so the production design is calibrated to what the space does well: sightlines clean from nearly everywhere, a proscenium wide enough for a full company. The Kavli is 1,800 seats of genuine theatrical infrastructure, and regional theater at this level does not get enough credit. Tickets at ticketmaster.com. Pick your seat before the good sections close. Fred Kavli Theatre, Thousand Oaks, July 10th, 2026.

Los Angeles Latinx Film Festival 2026
Jul 16 – Jul 20, 2026 Let Live Theater, Los Angeles, CA …

The screen has eighty seats, and nobody involved is apologizing for that number. At this size the filmmaker is not behind a rope somewhere. They are in row four. The Q&A after the credits stops being a promotional exercise and turns into a working session, because the audience asks real questions and gets real answers, and the conversation keeps going out on the sidewalk afterward. Films that would vanish inside a larger festival find the exact people they were made for. For ten years this has been the room for work studios would not risk and networks would not greenlight — the specific, the personal, the stories told from inside instead of about. That mandate has not gotten one bit easier. Accepted filmmakers get passes, networking, and award consideration; everyone else gets a Q&A after every single screening. Bring the friend who keeps saying nobody makes movies for them anymore. Watch their face when the person who made it is sitting two rows ahead.

Outdoor Movie: Sinners
May 1, 2026 $15-25 3800 Homer St, Heritage Square Mus…

Street Food Cinema brought Sinners outdoors to Heritage Square Museum in Los Angeles — lawn seating under the LA sky, local food truck flavors, and Ryan Coogler's most talked-about film of 2025. The combination of outdoor cinema, community dining, and one of the year's most culturally resonant films made this a night that stayed with people long after the credits rolled. Sinners — a supernatural period piece set in the Jim Crow South, starring Michael B. Jordan — generated some of the most passionate word-of-mouth of any film in recent memory. Watching it under the open sky at Heritage Square, surrounded by a crowd of people who chose to be there, was a fundamentally different experience than the multiplex version. Street Food Cinema has been bringing this format to Los Angeles for years — pairing films that matter with outdoor spaces that breathe. Heritage Square Museum's grounds, with their restored Victorian buildings as atmospheric backdrop, add a layer of place-specific character that a traditional theater cannot replicate. If this event recurs — and films generating this level of cultural conversation do not come along every season — it belongs on your calendar before tickets exist. Keep an eye on Street Food Cinema's schedule for future outdoor screenings of films worth sitting under the sky for.

Independent horror filmmakers get their own three-day showcase at the 8th LA Horror Film Festival, running October 16-18 at Let Live Theater in Los Angeles. This is not a midnight screening of a studio sequel -- this is the festival where first-time directors screen the thing they shot in a warehouse in Van Nuys with a budget that would not cover a single day of catering on a studio lot. The programming runs from short films to features, spanning psychological horror, creature features, body horror, and the uncategorizable experiments that only exist because someone with a camera decided to try. Panel discussions and filmmaker Q-and-As fill the gaps between screenings, and the crowd is the kind of horror community that has opinions about practical effects versus CGI that will outlast any conversation you expected to have. Let Live Theater, Los Angeles. Three days of independent horror cinema.

There is no membership, no reservation, no blanket application - you just show up in the middle of downtown Los Angeles and a movie is playing on twelve acres of park that runs from City Hall to the Music Center. That kind of open, unguarded public space is exactly what cities claim to want and almost never sustain. Grand Park has sustained it for over a decade. On summer evenings the park hosts free outdoor movies, and the audience is downtown LA in cross-section: workers who stayed late and found a reason to stay later, people who walked over from Pershing Square, families from Boyle Heights and Chinatown and Echo Park who treat Grand Park as a weekend destination, tourists who did not know this existed. Beyond the movies, the park runs free concerts, fitness events, and cultural celebrations through summer and fall. 200 N Grand Ave, Los Angeles, CA 90012. Free. Spirited Away gave you that homesickness the first time you saw it — and this October, for one week only, its 25th anniversary and the finale of Studio Ghibli Fest 2026, Hayao Miyazaki's masterpiece comes back to the big screen where the ache belongs. There is a particular silence that falls over a theater full of people who love the same film. The lights drop, Joe Hisaishi's first piano notes land, and a room of strangers stops breathing at the same moment. Ghibli Fest runs both the subtitled original and the English dub, with a piece of surprise content before each show. But the real event is the crowd — parents who were kids when this came out, now holding the hands of kids seeing it for the first time; longtime fans catching a detail they'd missed on every laptop rewatch; someone two rows back crying quietly and not caring who sees. Even if you've seen it a dozen times, you have not seen it like this. If Spirited Away is a film you carry around inside you, this isn't a question — you go. Projected, at scale, with sound that fills the room, is the version it was made for. It's rated PG and open to almost everyone, though No-Face and the spirit world can frighten very small children — parents of under-sevens should know that going in. This is not a movie to leave on in the background. It's two hours built to move you, in a room full of people who came to be moved alongside you. Tickets run through the official Ghibli Fest and participating theater box offices, and the anniversary finale sells out earliest of the whole festival — buy ahead. Choose your format on purpose: the dub is the gentle way in for young kids, the subtitled original is what the purists want. Come early for the pre-show content most latecomers miss. Go on a weekend evening if you can, when the theater fills all the way up and the silence gets deeper. Some films you own and still leave the house for. At twenty-five, Spirited Away is less a movie than a place people keep returning to — and going back together, in the dark, is how you remember why it marked you. One week in October. Then the train pulls away again.

Grass under a blanket, somebody's dog wandering the row, and a kid down front narrating the plot to nobody in particular. Half the neighborhood is out here and not one of them paid anything to be. Somebody decided that every part of this city deserved at least one summer evening of a movie outdoors under an actual sky, and then went and did it, park by park, year after year. The format is the whole idea: find the screening closest to you, bring something to sit on, arrive before dark. No seats to reserve, no venue with opinions about your shoes. Just a park turning into a theater for a few hours because people wanted somewhere good to be. The lineup runs wide enough that something is always worth the trip — a recent release, an old one, something the kids have not seen. Rotating locations from July into October, free. Find the one nearest you and tell your neighbors. That is genuinely all it takes.
