The sky stopped being something you look at and became something you drive under. Not because you stopped caring — because nobody ever handed you a telescope and stood next to you while you worked out what you were seeing. Once a month the lawn outside the observatory fills with dozens of telescopes, and behind every one of them is an amateur astronomer from the Los Angeles Astronomical Society, the Sidewalk Astronomers or The Planetary Society who has been waiting all month for somebody to ask them a question. That is the actual event. Not the building, not the view of the city — the strangers with equipment they built or saved for, who will let you look through it and then explain what you just saw. One thing first-timers get wrong: it starts at two in the afternoon. The early hours are for the Sun through filtered scopes, which most people have genuinely never seen, and the crowd is thinnest then. Stay as the light goes and the same lawn becomes a different place. Saturday, October 17, 2 p.m. to 9:45 p.m. Free, no ticket. Griffith Observatory, 2800 E Observatory Rd.

Los Angeles is where the night sky went to die. Ten million people worth of sodium glow means a kid can grow up here and never once see the Milky Way, and the strange consequence is that an actual telescope pointed at an actual planet lands much harder on an Angeleno than it would on somebody from a dark county. So volunteers haul their own instruments up the hill and set them on the lawn, dozens of them, and let strangers look. The people running them are amateurs in the old sense — the Astronomical Society, the Sidewalk Astronomers, the Planetary Society — and they have been doing this for decades, which means the person adjusting the focus for you has explained Saturn's rings to roughly nine thousand people and has not got tired of the moment when it lands. Come early and the same telescopes are pointed at the sun. Two in the afternoon until a quarter to ten, free, up on the south lawn. Nobody forgets the first time they see the rings with their own eye.

While you are looking Different scene, same night out.

Daytime dancing is a different physiological event and people who have only done it at night do not know this yet. Nobody is drunk in the same way, you can see everyone's face, and the self-consciousness that governs a dark room simply is not available to you — which turns out to be freeing rather than exposing, about forty minutes in. The park matters. LA State Historic Park is the long green stretch on the edge of Chinatown with the downtown skyline standing directly behind the stage, so the sunset lands behind the buildings and the whole crowd turns to look at it at roughly the same moment, every time, without being told to. Tech house across the afternoon into the evening, five PM to eleven, built around local selectors rather than a flown-in headliner. Grass, so wear shoes you can stand in for six hours. Saturday November 14 at 1245 North Spring Street. Bring the friend who says they hate raves. They have only ever been to indoor ones at one in the morning.

LA Zoo Lights: Animals Aglow 2026
Every day · Next Nov 20 Los Angeles Zoo, 5333 Zoo Dr, Los …

When the sun drops behind the Griffith hills, the animals go to sleep and the zoo turns into something else entirely — a mile of illuminated trails, oversized lanterns shaped like creatures you just saw in the daytime, and the quiet realization that you're walking through a botanical garden at night with a hot chocolate. LA Zoo Lights: Animals Aglow runs from November 13, 2026 through January 11, 2027 at the Los Angeles Zoo. After-dark entry transforms the grounds with custom-built animal-shaped lanterns, seasonal light installations, themed displays, and entertainment. Closed most Mondays and Tuesdays, plus December 24-25 and December 31. Los Angeles Zoo, 5333 Zoo Dr, Los Angeles, CA 90027. Tickets $19-$29 at lazoo.org. This is the holiday outing that makes people who normally avoid holiday outings say yes. The zoo after dark feels nothing like the zoo during the day.

The Pineapple Thief at The Observatory North Park — San Diego
Dec 6, 2026 2891 University Ave, San Diego, CA…

There’s a kind of music that doesn’t ask you to dance or sing along. It asks you to close your eyes and let the architecture of sound build itself around you, floor by floor, until you are inside something you never saw being built. The Pineapple Thief has been building those structures for over 25 years. The British progressive rock band brings their live show to The Observatory North Park on December 6. Led by Bruce Soord and featuring King Crimson drummer Gavin Harrison, whose precision behind the kit turned the band’s studio recordings into something tighter and more dangerous, this is the most focused version of a band that never stopped evolving. Their catalog spans delicate acoustic passages, crushing riffs, and shifts that make a room of 1,100 people hold their breath. The Observatory at 2891 University Ave is the right size for this band — large enough for the sound to breathe, small enough that Harrison’s drumming vibrates in your sternum. Doors at 7 PM, show at 8 PM. All ages. A Sunday evening in early December. The weekend isn’t over. The week hasn’t started yet. Two hours in the dark with a band that rewards patience, and a drummer who makes patience unnecessary.

Los Angeles Pinball League — Monthly Tournament
Monthly · Next Nov 13 Various venues, Los Angeles, CA

Somewhere in this city tonight there is a back room where the pinball never stopped — machines everyone assumed died with the arcades, lined up, lit up, and played for blood by people who know each ruleset cold. You thought it was nostalgia. They kept it a sport. Once a month the league runs a real tournament: matchplay, a new opponent and a random machine every round, points stacking across the night. It is IFPA-sanctioned, but that is not why the regulars come. A good table is the most honest machine there is. It does not care who you are, only whether you can read the ball. Here is what outsiders never expect: this crowd wants you to get good. Show up knowing only how to keep a ball alive and someone ranked will lean over between rounds and show you where the safe nudge is, when to let it drain on purpose. Venues rotate. Check the league's Facebook group and the IFPA calendar for this month's location. All-ages at most stops, 21+ at the bars.

OB Farmers Market 2026 — Every Wednesday
Every Wednesday · Next Oct 28 Free 4900 Newport Ave, San Diego, CA 92…

Wednesday is the evening Ocean Beach stops being a postcard and goes back to being a neighborhood. From four until eight, Newport Avenue between Cable and Bacon turns into one long conversation — past the record stores and surf shops and dive bars that have outlasted most of the vendors' youngest customers. It is a certified farmers market, so the produce is the real thing: growers, baked goods, flowers, honey, kombucha, and prepared food from people who are here every single week. The regulars are the point. You start recognizing faces around the third visit, and that is when it stops being an errand. Dogs come by default. This is OB. Newport Ave between Cable and Bacon Streets, Ocean Beach. Free street parking on the side streets. Nothing about it is remarkable, which is precisely the thing people miss after they move away.

You will be tired in a way that feels earned. Four days, a hundred thousand people, and not one of them needs you to explain what you are talking about. The largest anime convention in North America takes the Los Angeles Convention Center over Fourth of July weekend and spills into the JW Marriott and the Ritz-Carlton beside it. Industry panels, screening rooms, autograph sessions with voice actors and composers, concerts that sell out weeks ahead. Studios from Japan use this as their main North American announcement stage — if a sequel or adaptation is being revealed, it often happens in a room you could be standing in. The exhibit hall carries imported merchandise and collaboration exclusives that surface nowhere else on the continent. Los Angeles Convention Center, 1201 S Figueroa St. Thursday through Sunday. Badges run from top-tier early-access down to single-day passes. Book the connected hotel corridor months out. Everyone who tells you that learned it the hard way.
