Eurodance is the most maligned genre in the history of recorded music and its revival is being led, correctly, by people too young to feel embarrassed about it. No apology, no wink, just the actual records played loud. That generational gap is the whole story of this kind of night. Everyone over thirty-five in the room is having a complicated experience; everyone under twenty-five is simply having a good time. Sam Alfred works that seam between trance, eurodance and hard house — the euphoric, unfashionable, unembarrassed end of dance music — and Sound is one of the few Hollywood rooms where the system can carry it. Saturday the tenth of October, doors at ten, Las Palmas just off Hollywood Boulevard.

They broke up in 2006 and stayed broken up for the better part of a decade, and for a lot of people that was the end of a specific era of dance music that never quite got replaced. Deep Dish — Sharam and Dubfire, two Iranian-American producers out of Washington DC — won a Grammy, defined progressive house for most of a decade, and then went their separate ways at the exact moment the genre they built started getting called dated. The reunion sets are long and unhurried in a way that current club bookings rarely allow, which is the entire appeal: they came up when a DJ got four hours and used them to actually construct something rather than deliver a highlight reel. Hollywood, Halloween weekend, in a room built around the sound system rather than the sightlines. Ten at night on Friday the thirtieth.

A booking that nobody outside the scene recognizes is a promoter telling you they trust their room. No name to sell tickets on, no press cycle — just a night built on the assumption that the regulars will come because the regulars always come. That is most of what keeps a club alive between the headline bookings, and Hollywood has fewer of those rooms than it used to. Sound is one of the last in the neighborhood organized around the floor rather than around tables, and its Friday programming runs on people who show up for the venue rather than the lineup. The room is built around a Funktion-One rig, which is the reason the bookings skew toward DJs who care about how a record actually sounds rather than how it looks on a poster. It is a small distinction that decides which crowd a venue keeps over ten years. House music on a mid-November Friday. The floor fills late and stays late.

Nov 25 – Nov 26, 2026 ✨ New Sound Nightclub, 1642 N Las Palmas…

The Wednesday before Thanksgiving is the one night of the year the whole city comes home. Everyone who moved away for school or a job or a person is back in their childhood bedroom with nothing to do until the turkey, and every one of them is texting the same four people about it. Sound sits on Las Palmas behind a door that gives away nothing from the sidewalk, and the argument for the place has always been the rig rather than the decor. No bottle service theater, no roaming photographer, no view of the room from the street. Just a dark rectangle and a system built to be felt in your sternum at two in the morning. You will run into somebody you went to high school with. That is not a risk of the evening, it is the entire point of the evening. Wear something you can explain over breakfast the next day. Sound Nightclub, 1642 N Las Palmas Ave. Doors ten, Wednesday the 25th.

Dec 18 – Dec 19, 2026 ✨ New Sound Nightclub, 1642 N Las Palmas…

Office party season has a specific sound, and it is a playlist somebody in operations assembled, played at a volume chosen so that people can network over the top of it. Eleven consecutive days of that will make a person want a room where the music is the actual point and conversation is the thing that has to fight for space. Hollywood keeps one of those behind an unmarked door on Las Palmas. House played properly and at length, no theme night, no photo wall, nothing in the room designed to end up on anybody's feed afterward. Doors at ten and it runs well into the small hours of Saturday morning. The third Friday in December is also the last one before everybody scatters to their parents for a week. Send it to whoever you normally text at eleven asking if anything is happening tonight. From ten on December 18, Las Palmas Avenue in Hollywood.

Jan 29 – Jan 30, 2027 ✨ New $30.60 Sound Nightclub, 1642 N Las Palmas…

The last Friday in January is the bottom of the year. The holidays are a rumour, nothing warms up for another two months, and the only honest response is to find a dark room and stay in it until something shifts. Sound is the Hollywood answer to that: an unmarked door on Las Palmas, a rig built for people who care about low end, and a booking policy that leans on DJs who play long rather than names printed large. Ten o'clock start, which here means the first ninety minutes are for the people who actually came for the music and the room fills in behind them later. There is nothing else on this date for forty miles. That is not a complaint, it is the reason to go. Send it to whoever has been indoors since New Year's. From ten on January 29, Las Palmas in Hollywood.

Oct 1 – Oct 2, 2026 Sound Nightclub, 1642 N Las Palmas…

Thursday nights are the honest ones. Friday is everybody, and Saturday is everybody's plan. Thursday belongs to the people who decided, on a work night, that the week owed them something. Tech house lives or dies on a room's low end, and Sound is one of the few rooms in this city built around the sound system instead of around bottle service. The booth sits low and close to the floor. There is no VIP tier looking down on anyone, which quietly changes who turns up and how they behave, because nobody is performing for a mezzanine. Biscits has become one of those UK exports the LA circuit keeps rebooking — the sort of name that draws people who can tell you which room a given set was recorded in. Doors open at ten, which in this scene means the floor is not worth walking onto before midnight. Plan for Friday to be difficult. Las Palmas, just off Hollywood Boulevard — ten until three, 21 and over, Thursday the first.

While you are looking Different scene, same night out.

Loving something loudly in private has a silence all its own. You know the opening eight bars of a song nobody at your job has heard. You have a real opinion about a fight scene you cannot bring up at dinner. Then a room like this opens and the private thing turns out to belong to several hundred people who also stayed up for the simulcast. The remixes are built for exactly this - the DJs cut openings into club edits, so a track you have only ever heard under a title card lands at one in the morning with a floor full of people shouting the Japanese back at it. There is a cosplay catwalk. The cocktails are named after characters. Nobody explains any of it, because nobody needs it explained. Spin Nightclub, 2028 Hancock Street, San Diego. Nine o'clock, twenty-one and over. The same crew runs the Los Angeles room, and the circuit keeps going all year.

Some bands are famous entirely among other bands, and this is one of the clearest examples — a Kansas City group whose records got passed around by musicians throughout the late nineties while almost nobody else noticed, then became the reference point for a whole strain of heavy melodic rock that came after. They broke up, stayed broken up for the better part of two decades, and reformed to find that the reputation had grown enormously in their absence. The sound is dense and precise, guitars stacked into something closer to architecture than to riffing. Crowds for this skew heavily toward people who play in bands themselves, which makes for an unusually attentive room. High desert saloon, Wednesday, doors at 9:00 PM in Pioneertown. Reputation built entirely by word of mouth between musicians is a slow way to build an audience and a durable one.

The Oldest Person in the World with Sam Green in conversation
Oct 22, 2026 Vidiots MUBI Microcinema, 4884 Eag…

Somewhere on earth right now one person is the furthest anyone has gotten. When they go, the title moves to a stranger, and the whole record of human time shifts one seat down without ceremony. Thinking about that too long does something to you - it makes a Thursday feel both unbearably short and strangely survivable. Sam Green builds films about exactly this kind of vertigo, and he builds them to be experienced in a room rather than alone on a laptop; his work has always treated an audience's simultaneous presence as part of the material. He will be there afterward, in conversation, somewhere under fifty seats. This is not a movie you put on. It is an hour you agree to spend with other people thinking about the arithmetic of a life, and then walking out onto Eagle Rock Boulevard slightly rearranged. Thursday, October 22 at 7:00pm, in the microcinema.

Every day · Next Oct 27 $45+ Hollywood Pantages Theatre, 6233 H…

Before jukebox musicals were a thing, The Who blew the doors off with a full-blown rock opera about a deaf, dumb, and blind kid who becomes a pinball messiah, and the Broadway revival of Tommy reinvented it for the stage with jaw-dropping projections, strobe-lit spectacle, and that wall of guitar. Pinball Wizard hits differently when a live band is shaking the walls of the Hollywood Pantages. This is loud, strange, gorgeous theater for people who think they don't like musicals. The touring production plays the Pantages October 27 through November 15, 2026, in the heart of Hollywood off the Metro B Line. Come for the songs you already know by heart, stay for a story far weirder and more moving than the radio hits let on. Bring the classic-rock fan who swears they hate Broadway; watch them cave.

Italo-Disco Horror Night - Argento's Deep Red
Oct 27, 2026 Vidiots at the Eagle Theatre, 4884…

Giallo and italo-disco came out of the same country in the same decade, and almost nobody thinks to put them in one room. Argento's 1975 picture is the one with the Goblin score, the murder glimpsed through a window by a man who cannot trust what he saw, and a colour palette that makes no logical sense and perfect emotional sense. A DJ spins italo before the film and again after it, so you dance, then you watch somebody get killed to what is essentially a prog-rock lullaby, then you dance again — and the second dance feels different, which is the joke and also the point. It screens in a restored Eagle Rock movie house that still runs 35mm and keeps a thirty-six seat microcinema down the hall. Doors open ninety minutes before the picture, because the first set is not a warm-up act. Horror obsessives and record collectors end up finding each other in the lobby, which is not something either scene planned on. Doors six, picture seven-thirty, Tuesday the 27th of October, at the old Eagle Theatre on Eagle Rock Blvd.

Bands built out of a college friendship that kept going after everyone should have gotten sensible jobs tend to have a looseness that industry-assembled groups never manage. This Washington DC group plays soul with rock instrumentation, fronted by a singer whose range does most of the heavy lifting, and they built the following the slow way, by touring constantly and being noticeably better live than on record. The material is about relationships and the arrangements leave room for the band to actually play. A Tuesday night in a high desert saloon means a small, warm, attentive room rather than a festival crowd, which suits them. Music at 9:00 PM in Pioneertown, out past Yucca Valley. Weeknight bookings out here are how the venue keeps a year-round audience rather than only a weekend one, and the regulars are the people who show up for them.
