Spreckels Organ Pavilion, 2211 Pan…
What is remarkable here is not the organ. It is that somebody, in 1914, made sure it would always be free — wrote it into the terms of the gift, permanently, for as long as the city stands. More than a century later, nobody has found a way around it.
There are 4,965 pipes and the largest run twenty feet. Under an open sky the sound is not merely loud; it has a physical presence you feel in your sternum from across the pavilion, and no recording has ever carried it. The Sunday program runs an hour, played by local organists and visiting musicians, each of whom the instrument can reward or punish.
Come early for a seat. The crowd is everyone — decades-long regulars, families who drifted over from the zoo, and people who stopped walking because the sound reached them first.
Sit down next to a stranger and listen to a city keep a promise.

Spreckels Organ Pavilion, 2211 Pan…
Somebody spreads a blanket on the grass behind the pavilion, somebody else opens a picnic, and for ninety minutes on a summer evening one of the most beautiful outdoor rooms in the city belongs to whoever showed up in comfortable shoes.
Three nights a week from mid-June into late August, the Spreckels Organ Pavilion fills with military bands, Dixieland, big band swing, and Latin salsa. The salsa nights bring dancers — actual dancers, who clear their own patch of concrete and do not care that you are watching. The military band nights bring community groups who have been coming for as long as anyone can remember.
There are no tickets. No reservation, no list, nothing to buy. You walk in off the promenade, find a spot, and stay as long as you want. The City puts it on and keeps it free, and the crowd is every demographic San Diego actually has.
Bring the person who keeps saying this city is expensive. Then say nothing and let the evening make the argument for you.

Spreckels Organ Pavilion, 2211 Pan…
The best organists alive do not, as a rule, pass through San Diego on a Monday night, unless somebody makes a point of dragging them here. Somebody does, every summer. The Monday series is a different animal from the Sunday afternoon concerts: it runs longer, draws a more focused audience, and features soloists who have spent whole careers on this one instrument. Each visiting organist chooses their own program, so going twice gets you two genuinely different evenings, and an instrument this strange rewards a second visit more than a first. Then there is the setting, which is half the case for going at all. The marine layer has usually burned off by evening, the amphitheater seating faces the organ facade, and Balboa Park goes quiet behind you as the light drops. It costs nothing, it requires no ticket, and most people who have lived here their whole lives have still never gone. Bring something to sit on and stay for the whole program. Then tell somebody, because that is how a thing this good survives.

Spreckels Organ Pavilion, 1549 El …
Low notes arrive through the ground before they ever reach your ears. You feel them in the legs of the chair and in your sternum, and then the upper voices float up into the eucalyptus overhead, and you understand that nothing prepares a person for a pipe organ at full power outdoors.
The instrument in that pavilion is the largest outdoor pipe organ on earth, built before either world war and still played weekly, which almost nowhere else can claim. Monday evenings through the summer, organists come from around the world for solo recitals on it. Some nights it accompanies a silent film live — a century-old art form resurrected in real time for a lawn full of people who wandered over.
No dress code, no cost, no pretension. Seats fill early, so bring a low chair and a sweater; the surrounding lawn sounds excellent because the organ was built to throw into the canyon.
This city has had this for over a century. Most of the city still has no idea.

Picture this: it is Labor Day Monday, the last gasp of summer, and you are sitting under the stars in Balboa Park while the largest outdoor pipe organ in the world plays Led Zeppelin. Not a recording. Not a cover band. A pipe organ — the same instrument that fills cathedrals — running through Whole Lotta Love with 5,000 pipes rattling the eucalyptus trees above your head.
ORGAN-ISM is the Spreckels Organ Pavilion's own rock band, and they are the only rock act on Earth that features a real pipe organ. This is the season finale of the 38th Annual International Summer Organ Festival, and they are closing it with The Doors, Van Halen, Aretha Franklin, Tina Turner, and Deep Purple. Raúl Prieto Ramírez directs — San Diego's Civic Organist, the kind of musician who can make a hundred-year-old instrument sound like it was built yesterday.
The whole thing is free. Bring a blanket, bring your family, bring the friend who thinks classical music is boring and watch their face when the organ drops into Smoke on the Water. The pavilion is in the heart of Balboa Park at 1549 El Prado. Show starts at 7:30 PM. No tickets needed — just show up and let the pipes do the rest.
While you are lookingDifferent scene, same night out.

You were maybe twelve, it was late, and you had gotten to the part where the music changes and the screen goes quiet, and you sat there with a controller in your hands feeling something you did not have words for yet. Thirty years later you still do not have the words. You do still have the melody.
The 30th anniversary concert that ran in Japan this January comes to Hollywood for one night, conducted by Nicholas Buc, with a full orchestra playing Yasunori Mitsuda's score the way it was always arranged in your head but never actually sounded through a console speaker. Chrono Trigger is the game people cite when they argue that the form can do what a novel does, and its soundtrack is the evidence they reach for first.
What makes the room worth it rather than the recording: you will be surrounded by several thousand people who all went quiet at the same moment in the same game, alone, decades ago, in different bedrooms. When the first notes of a particular theme land, you will hear the entire theatre react at once. That sound — the collective recognition — is not on any soundtrack.
Sunday, October 18, 8 p.m. Dolby Theatre, 6801 Hollywood Blvd. No recording of any kind permitted.

Balboa Park, 1549 El Prado, San Di…
For one weekend a year, a city that never slows down finally exhales. The lamps come up gold along El Prado, the museums throw their doors open for nothing, and hundreds of thousands of people wander the same paths at the same unhurried pace with cocoa in hand and nowhere in particular to be.
This is the largest free holiday festival in California, and it does something no ticketed spectacle can manage: it turns a sprawling metropolis back into a village for two nights. Choirs spill out of the organ pavilion. The International Cottages serve food from thirty nations. Kids press their faces to the museum glass after dark, when the halls feel like somewhere they were let into by accident.
You do not come to see one particular thing. You come to be reminded that the whole park, and the whole city with it, belongs to everyone at once — and that you were always counted in that.
Bring whoever needs reminding.

You have argued about this film. Everyone has. Somebody at some point told you the Keira Knightley cue-card scene is indefensible and somebody else cried at the airport montage in front of you, and the argument is now an annual fixture of your December whether you want it or not. What a live orchestra does to it is strange and worth reporting: the score stops being wallpaper. Craig Armstrong wrote something genuinely sad under all that Christmas, and when forty musicians play it in a room instead of through a laptop, the scenes people mock get very quiet and the ones people love get almost unbearable. The film runs complete and uncut on the screen above the players. The crowd laughs in the right places, loudly, because a cinema full of people who chose this is a different animal to a sofa. Go with the person you have the argument with. Balboa Theatre, downtown San Diego, a Sunday evening five days before Christmas, seven o'clock.

Somewhere in this city tonight there is a back room where the pinball never stopped — machines everyone assumed died with the arcades, lined up, lit up, and played for blood by people who know each ruleset cold. You thought it was nostalgia. They kept it a sport.
Once a month the league runs a real tournament: matchplay, a new opponent and a random machine every round, points stacking across the night. It is IFPA-sanctioned, but that is not why the regulars come. A good table is the most honest machine there is. It does not care who you are, only whether you can read the ball.
Here is what outsiders never expect: this crowd wants you to get good. Show up knowing only how to keep a ball alive and someone ranked will lean over between rounds and show you where the safe nudge is, when to let it drain on purpose.
Venues rotate. Check the league's Facebook group and the IFPA calendar for this month's location. All-ages at most stops, 21+ at the bars.

Every region sends its dark horses, and most of them go home in the first week. That is what makes the opening stage the most nervous, least predictable stretch of the whole tournament.
The Play-In Stage is where teams that did not walk in with a guaranteed bracket spot have to earn one, on foreign soil, against opponents they have only ever studied on video. Nothing is safe and nobody is comfortable. Upsets that reshape the entire championship happen here, in front of a few hundred people, before the broadcast audience has fully tuned in.
Riot Games Arena is the tightest, loudest room in North American esports — small enough that crowd noise reaches the stage, close enough to watch a player's posture change when a fight goes wrong. From inside that building it is a different sport.
Riot Games Arena, 12181 Bluff Creek Dr, Playa Vista. October 15-18. Tickets through lolesports.com.

Los Angeles Convention Center, 120…
You will be tired in a way that feels earned. Four days, a hundred thousand people, and not one of them needs you to explain what you are talking about.
The largest anime convention in North America takes the Los Angeles Convention Center over Fourth of July weekend and spills into the JW Marriott and the Ritz-Carlton beside it. Industry panels, screening rooms, autograph sessions with voice actors and composers, concerts that sell out weeks ahead. Studios from Japan use this as their main North American announcement stage — if a sequel or adaptation is being revealed, it often happens in a room you could be standing in.
The exhibit hall carries imported merchandise and collaboration exclusives that surface nowhere else on the continent.
Los Angeles Convention Center, 1201 S Figueroa St. Thursday through Sunday. Badges run from top-tier early-access down to single-day passes.
Book the connected hotel corridor months out. Everyone who tells you that learned it the hard way.
