The Vermont Hollywood, 1020 N Verm…
There is a specific frequency, somewhere below what a phone speaker can reproduce, that you feel in your chest rather than hear. Bass music exists entirely to find it, and everything above that frequency is basically decoration.
That is why this scene cares about rooms the way audiophiles care about equipment. Badklaat and Oolacile work the heavier, more chaotic end of dubstep — sound design that behaves more like industrial machinery than music — and a bill this deep is a promoter making a statement rather than filling a night. The Vermont holds a real crowd and has the rig to justify the booking. Bills like this are built by promoters who came up inside the scene rather than by a talent buyer filling a Friday, which is why the running order rewards arriving early instead of turning up for the headliner.
Nine at night on Friday the sixteenth of October, up on North Vermont Avenue.

Independent wrestling asks something of a crowd that arena wrestling never does: there are maybe two hundred of you, the ring is right there, and the wrestlers can hear every single thing you say. That changes the whole physics of the night. A chant either catches or it dies in front of everyone, and when it catches, two hundred people in a room on North Vermont sound more like a thousand because the ceiling is low and nobody is being polite. This is the sixth volume of a show that has been building its own crowd rather than borrowing one, which in this scene is the only currency that counts. Bell time is seven o'clock on Thursday October 22 at The Vermont in East Hollywood. Go before you have to explain who anyone is — being the person who saw somebody in a two-hundred-seat room first is a status nobody can take back, and the scene here is deep enough that it happens regularly.

Most people in this country have never heard a santur played live, and could not tell you what one looks like. It is a hammered dulcimer, Persian, seventy-two strings, played with two small mallets, and the sound it makes is closer to rain on a metal roof than to anything in a Western orchestra. Hearing it for the first time reliably does something to people that they struggle to describe afterward.
What makes this night worth the drive is that it is not a preservation concert. The instrument is run through live electronic production — loops, texture, ambient beds — which is exactly the kind of thing that gets purists annoyed and everyone else transfixed. The Iranian diaspora in Los Angeles is large enough and old enough that a room like this fills with two entirely different crowds who did not expect to be standing next to each other.
That double audience is the reason to go. You will be beside people who grew up with this sound in their parents' house and people who found it through ambient playlists, and both are correct.
Thursday November 12, 7:30 PM, at The Vermont in East Hollywood.

Back-to-back sets are the only format in electronic music that is genuinely unrepeatable. Two people trading records in real time, each trying to answer what the other just did, means the night cannot be rehearsed and has never happened before and will not happen again in that order. When it goes well the crowd can hear the argument.
Hostile runs bass nights at a small East Hollywood room and has built a reputation on booking exactly this — pairings rather than headliners. Putting Benda and Vastive on one deck for a long stretch is a deliberate choice about texture; both work the heavier, more mechanical end of dubstep, so rather than contrast you get escalation.
The room is the other half of it. The Vermont holds a couple hundred people, which for bass music is the correct number — sub frequencies in a large hall dissipate, and in a small one they are structural. You feel the set in your ribs rather than hear it.
Nine PM to two AM on Friday November 27, the night after Thanksgiving, which is historically the best-attended and worst-organized night of anyone's year. This one is organized. The Vermont, 1020 North Vermont Avenue.

Lodge Room, 104 N Avenue 56, Los A…
Every few years a band arrives that people struggle to describe without listing other bands, and the honest answer for this one is that the drummer is doing something nobody else is doing right now — polyrhythmic, relentless, closer to a machine failing than to rock drumming. Around that sits vocals somewhere between chant and panic and guitar that functions mostly as texture. The New York noise underground produced them and the internet spread them faster than that scene usually manages. Live is where it makes sense; the recordings sound difficult and the room sounds physical. Sets are short, which is correct. Highland Park's upstairs lodge has the volume headroom for it. Music at 8:00 PM at 104 N Avenue 56 on a Friday. Bands like this one get passed between people as a dare, and the room ends up full of everyone who took it.

Soda Bar, 3615 El Cajon Blvd, San …
Sunday night shows are attended almost exclusively by people who wanted to be there, which changes the room more than any other single variable.
No obligation crowd, no work-week bravado, nobody killing time before something else. Two acts, a dive bar, and maybe eighty people who each made a small deliberate choice to end their weekend standing up in front of a stage rather than lying down in front of a screen. Bands notice it and tend to play differently — looser, more talkative, more willing to try the new one.
Doors at seven, music at eight, which means you are out and home at a defensible hour.
October 18, Soda Bar, 3615 El Cajon Blvd. Bring whoever has been saying you two should do something. There is live music in this city literally every night of the week, and the Sunday and Monday versions are consistently the warmest rooms of the seven.

The Mayan, 1038 S Hill St, Los Ang…
Once a year the luchadores put Halloween masks on over their regular masks, and that one act of stacking costume on costume tells you everything about the night you have walked into.
This is the maximalist end of the calendar. The wrestlers go themed. The burlesque performers pull out their biggest numbers. Eduardo Leal presides over the chaos from the mic. And the crowd, which treats the holiday as a competition, turns up in full Day of the Dead makeup, in superhero suits, in luchador masks bought that afternoon specifically for this. A thousand people in an art deco theater at capacity, watching Mexican wrestling tradition collide with LA counterculture. It is either the strangest evening of your year or the best one.
The Mayan on South Hill Street downtown, 21 and over. It sells out weeks ahead, so the email list is how people actually get in.
Go with the person in your life who commits far too hard to a costume. They have been waiting for this room their whole life.

Balboa Theatre, 868 Fourth Ave, Sa…
Some voices are load-bearing. Karen Carpenter's is one - it holds up an entire idea of what December sounded like in a specific set of American houses, and people who were not alive for any of it still know every phrase, because it followed them through supermarkets and car radios until it became weather. The show does not pretend to be her. That matters, and it is the thing that makes or breaks a production like this: the arrangements are the originals, played by a live band, and the singing serves the songs rather than impersonating the person. What gets people is usually not the famous one. It is a deep cut somebody in the row behind you did not expect to hear, followed by a very particular silence. The audience skews older and sings along quietly, which is its own thing to witness. A Sunday night at the end of November, seven o'clock, at the smaller of downtown San Diego's two old theatres.

Various venues, Los Angeles, CA
Somewhere in this city tonight there is a back room where the pinball never stopped — machines everyone assumed died with the arcades, lined up, lit up, and played for blood by people who know each ruleset cold. You thought it was nostalgia. They kept it a sport.
Once a month the league runs a real tournament: matchplay, a new opponent and a random machine every round, points stacking across the night. It is IFPA-sanctioned, but that is not why the regulars come. A good table is the most honest machine there is. It does not care who you are, only whether you can read the ball.
Here is what outsiders never expect: this crowd wants you to get good. Show up knowing only how to keep a ball alive and someone ranked will lean over between rounds and show you where the safe nudge is, when to let it drain on purpose.
Venues rotate. Check the league's Facebook group and the IFPA calendar for this month's location. All-ages at most stops, 21+ at the bars.

Riot Games Arena, 12181 Bluff Cree…
Every region sends its dark horses, and most of them go home in the first week. That is what makes the opening stage the most nervous, least predictable stretch of the whole tournament.
The Play-In Stage is where teams that did not walk in with a guaranteed bracket spot have to earn one, on foreign soil, against opponents they have only ever studied on video. Nothing is safe and nobody is comfortable. Upsets that reshape the entire championship happen here, in front of a few hundred people, before the broadcast audience has fully tuned in.
Riot Games Arena is the tightest, loudest room in North American esports — small enough that crowd noise reaches the stage, close enough to watch a player's posture change when a fight goes wrong. From inside that building it is a different sport.
Riot Games Arena, 12181 Bluff Creek Dr, Playa Vista. October 15-18. Tickets through lolesports.com.
If you have only ever watched it on stream, this is the one to go to.
