One bowl at this festival does not exist anywhere else in the United States, a limited-edition festival bowl from a shop that flew it in for the day, and when the last one goes it is gone. That is why people queue before the gates open. The Ramen Yokocho, the dedicated ramen street, pulls acclaimed shops from Los Angeles, Las Vegas, and directly from Japan, and the roster rotates every year, so even the veterans do not know what is coming. Past the noodles the vendors run deep: yakitori, takoyaki, matcha desserts, Japanese street snacks, imported goods you carry home in a bag you did not plan on buying. Taiko drumming and Japanese dance run through the afternoon, and the whole day carries the weight of the South Bay's Japanese American community, which is what turned a neighborhood gathering into a two-decade fixture on the SoCal calendar. Go hungry, go early, split every bowl. Take the friend who thinks they have already had good ramen.

AniFest is the convention that remembers what conventions were supposed to feel like. One day at the Torrance Cultural Arts Center, and the whole floor hums with the particular energy of people who found each other through the same shows, the same characters, the same late-night rabbit holes.
Over a hundred vendors line the hall — artist prints, plushies, handmade cosplay accessories, imports you cannot find anywhere near here. Twenty-plus celebrity guests rotate through the signing area, close enough to actually talk to. The V-Stage runs an idol performance set. Cosplay showcases. LAN Hero gaming tournaments if you want to compete. A maid cafe if you want to sit down and feel like you are in an episode.
Small enough that you do not lose your friends in a crowd of sixty thousand. Large enough to fill the day twice over if you are the kind of person who stops at every table. Twenty dollars at the door. Children under 12 free with a paid adult.
This is the convention where people make their first cosplay because the room is safe enough to try. Where the vendor who sells hand-painted Jujutsu Kaisen prints remembers you from last year. Where the community is not performing fandom — it just is fandom, in the same room, for one afternoon in Torrance.

Last year you shot something you're still not sure is good. You showed three people. Two said it was great and one said nothing, which is the one you keep thinking about.
Riptide Film Festival is the South Bay's answer to that silence. It screens indie and high school filmmakers at the Armstrong Theatre in Torrance — a venue just small enough that the filmmaker is sitting three rows from the audience reaction. No publicists, no red carpet, no entourage blocking the bar. Just the work, projected large, in front of people who came because they wanted to see something they hadn't seen before.
The festival celebrates filmmakers at every stage — first shorts alongside polished independents — and the Q&As afterward are the kind where someone in the audience asks the question the filmmaker was afraid no one would notice. It's the South Bay film community in a room together, discovering each other.
Saturday, October 17, 2026. James R. Armstrong Theatre, 3330 Civic Center Dr, Torrance 90503. Torrance has a quiet circuit of screenings and shorts nights the rest of the year, and most of these filmmakers are on it.

Nov 13 – Nov 15, 2026
San Diego Convention Center, 111 W…
Your favorite streamer - the one you have watched for 3,000 hours - is probably in the building, and you can actually walk up and talk to them. That is the whole reason to go.
There is a strange intimacy to a parasocial relationship built over thousands of hours of someone's voice in your headphones, and this is the one place it collapses into a real handshake. You know their cat's name. You know which of their friends you would get along with. They do not know you exist, and somehow that does not make the queue feel foolish, because everyone standing in it is carrying the same lopsided friendship and nobody here is embarrassed about it.
The expo hall plays like a live streaming studio crossed with a gaming lounge: streamers broadcasting right off the floor, sub-notification sounds coming from everywhere, meet-and-greets with people who have lived in your second monitor for years. Variety Arcades, developer showcases, and cosplay competitions for game characters fill out the rest, and the whole convention is built around live streaming culture - the people who make it and the people who never miss a stream, in the same room for once.
Is it worth the trip? If streaming is background noise to you, no - it will read as a trade show for a job you do not have. If a particular channel has been the thing you put on when the apartment is too quiet, then yes, unreservedly. This is the one weekend of the year when a community stops being a chat window and becomes a crowd with faces in it.
What first-timers get wrong is planning around panels and missing the hall. The panels get recorded. The accidental conversation in a signing line does not. Wear shoes you can stand in all day, bring a battery, and accept that your schedule will survive roughly until lunch.
TwitchCon North America 2026 returns to San Diego, September 25-27. Half the crowd stays in the city afterward, and the unofficial meetups scattered around the convention are where the rest of it actually happens.

DoubleTree by Hilton Mission Valle…
The hotel lobby at midnight is where the real convention happens. Someone brought a Switch, someone else brought a projector, and a group of strangers who met four hours ago are playing like they have known each other since middle school. San Diego LAN runs alongside the San Diego Anime Convention at the DoubleTree in Mission Valley, with Saturday and Sunday sessions from 11 AM to 6 PM, mixing strategy and FPS titles with a house party feel that competitive gaming lost somewhere along the way. VR stations, board games, and video games spanning every genre and generation fill the game room at a volume that makes you forget there is an anime convention happening in the next ballroom. This is not a tournament with spectators — it is a living room that happens to hold a hundred people who all brought their own controllers. DoubleTree by Hilton Mission Valley, 7450 Hazard Center Dr, San Diego. November 21–22, 2026.

Various venues, Los Angeles, CA
Somewhere in this city tonight there is a back room where the pinball never stopped — machines everyone assumed died with the arcades, lined up, lit up, and played for blood by people who know each ruleset cold. You thought it was nostalgia. They kept it a sport.
Once a month the league runs a real tournament: matchplay, a new opponent and a random machine every round, points stacking across the night. It is IFPA-sanctioned, but that is not why the regulars come. A good table is the most honest machine there is. It does not care who you are, only whether you can read the ball.
Here is what outsiders never expect: this crowd wants you to get good. Show up knowing only how to keep a ball alive and someone ranked will lean over between rounds and show you where the safe nudge is, when to let it drain on purpose.
Venues rotate. Check the league's Facebook group and the IFPA calendar for this month's location. All-ages at most stops, 21+ at the bars.

Riot Games Arena, 12181 Bluff Cree…
Every region sends its dark horses, and most of them go home in the first week. That is what makes the opening stage the most nervous, least predictable stretch of the whole tournament.
The Play-In Stage is where teams that did not walk in with a guaranteed bracket spot have to earn one, on foreign soil, against opponents they have only ever studied on video. Nothing is safe and nobody is comfortable. Upsets that reshape the entire championship happen here, in front of a few hundred people, before the broadcast audience has fully tuned in.
Riot Games Arena is the tightest, loudest room in North American esports — small enough that crowd noise reaches the stage, close enough to watch a player's posture change when a fight goes wrong. From inside that building it is a different sport.
Riot Games Arena, 12181 Bluff Creek Dr, Playa Vista. October 15-18. Tickets through lolesports.com.
If you have only ever watched it on stream, this is the one to go to.

Los Angeles Convention Center, 120…
You will be tired in a way that feels earned. Four days, a hundred thousand people, and not one of them needs you to explain what you are talking about.
The largest anime convention in North America takes the Los Angeles Convention Center over Fourth of July weekend and spills into the JW Marriott and the Ritz-Carlton beside it. Industry panels, screening rooms, autograph sessions with voice actors and composers, concerts that sell out weeks ahead. Studios from Japan use this as their main North American announcement stage — if a sequel or adaptation is being revealed, it often happens in a room you could be standing in.
The exhibit hall carries imported merchandise and collaboration exclusives that surface nowhere else on the continent.
Los Angeles Convention Center, 1201 S Figueroa St. Thursday through Sunday. Badges run from top-tier early-access down to single-day passes.
Book the connected hotel corridor months out. Everyone who tells you that learned it the hard way.
