29th Annual LA Cancer Challenge 5K Walk/Run
Some races you run against the clock. This one you run against something considerably harder, and you do it in a costume.
The course winds past the Bruin Bear and the John Wooden statue and finishes outside Drake Stadium, with a Candyland zone for the kids somewhere in the middle of it. Under all of the costumes, this is a gathering of survivors, families, and the people who love them, raising money to fight pancreatic cancer through the Hirshberg Foundation.
For twenty-nine years it has turned grief into a costumed morning of motion — a kid in a dinosaur suit running beside somebody carrying a photograph, and nobody finding that strange for a second.
You do not have to be fast. You just have to show up, in whatever costume makes the morning lighter.
Everybody out there is running for a name. Bring yours.
