About

Most people only drive through this village on the way to somewhere else. One evening a year it proves, fairly conclusively, that it was the destination the whole time.

It is capped at a thousand tickets, and that cap is the entire design. The restaurants do not get overwhelmed, so the chefs are actually standing there, and the portions are not apologetic. You are not elbowing five thousand people for a sample cup — you are having a short conversation with the person who cooked the thing you are eating.

Your ticket comes with a passport, a monogrammed reusable spork, and a sip cup if you took the drink package. You walk at your own pace over about three hours on an autumn Thursday evening, stopping wherever the line is shortest or the smell is strongest.

That is what happens to downtown Oceanside for one afternoon. The coastal stretch between Coast Highway and the pier turns into a walking food tour, and somewhere around the fourth stop it lands on you that you have been driving past fifty restaurants for years without ever once pulling over. Over fifty of them open their doors, and you move at your own pace. Shuttles loop the district for anyone who would rather ride, or whose third tasting hit harder than expected. MainStreet runs it because they know the food is not really the product. The product is walking into a place you never noticed, tasting something that makes you close your eyes, and knowing already that you are coming back next week with someone who needs this. Every August, the stretch of South Coast Highway 101 in downtown Encinitas transforms into an open-air tasting room. The Taste of Encinitas invites you to stroll from restaurant to restaurant, sampling signature bites from the cafes, bakeries, seafood houses, and taco spots that make this beach town one of the best food corridors in North County San Diego. This is not a festival with a stage and a headline act. This is a neighborhood walking its own Main Street, tasting what the people who live here already know is there. The restaurants that participate are not pop-ups. They are the places with regulars who come every Tuesday. The event runs from 5:30 PM to 8:30 PM, which means you are eating as the sun drops behind the Pacific a few blocks west. The light in Encinitas at that hour is the kind of thing people post about without thinking about it. Bring comfortable shoes — you will walk more than you expect, and every block has a reason to stop. Tickets are available through the Encinitas 101 Main Street Association. If you have eaten at one Encinitas restaurant but never walked the whole strip in one night, this is the invitation.

Six hundred restaurants down there and you have been to the same four for three years. It is not entirely your fault — from the sidewalk every menu blurs into the next, and the hostess stand is always doing that thing where it pretends not to see you. This breaks the pattern by force. You drift from plate to plate as the string lights come on. The chefs are standing right there rather than behind a pass, which changes every conversation you have about the food. It is twenty-one and over, it is unhurried, and it carries the specific magic of eating an entire town's worth of good cooking in one place in one night. This is not a festival in a parking lot with folding tables. The neighborhood itself is the venue — you walk the streets, duck into storefronts, and taste what a chef has been quietly obsessing over for a year. More than fifty restaurants, bars, and cafes open at once, and by the third stop you are already deciding which friend has to come next time. It runs a Saturday in October along Thirtieth Street and University Avenue, midday into afternoon, ticketed ahead. North Park is where this city eats when it is not performing for tourists. This is the day it shows you all of it at once.

The smell reaches you before the stages do - barbecue and catfish and soul food covering a mile-plus of Crenshaw Boulevard, because every major Black-owned restaurant in South LA has a booth out here and the food is the center of the whole thing. For one Saturday in October, this stretch between Martin Luther King Jr. Boulevard and Leimert Park Village becomes one of the largest street festivals in Los Angeles. More than 300,000 people move through in a single day. The format is street vendors, restaurant booths, live music stages, a car show, health screenings, and community organization presence - but it is the food and the crowd that make it. Founded by the Los Angeles Sentinel, the oldest Black-owned newspaper in California, it has run for over two decades and stayed a genuine community institution: multigenerational, neighborhood-rooted, and enormous. This is Leimert Park and Crenshaw at their fullest. Free to attend. Crenshaw closes to traffic for the day. The Metro K Line stops at Leimert Park Village and is the easiest way in and out. Arrive early if you want to move - by noon the crowds are deep.
