Sunrise, low tide, and a beach already full of pop-up tents and a kid in a rash guard vibrating with nerves in the sand. Competitive surfing starts earlier than anything else on the calendar.

Two days at the 9th Street break, which is one of Orange County's most reliable contest venues precisely because the peaks shift just enough to reward whoever is paying attention. Every heat is a conversation between a surfer and the water: power turns, floaters, and tube rides if the swell cooperates, judged by people who grew up on these same waves and are not easily impressed.

The tour draws SoCal's best amateur and age-division talent plus open-division competitors chasing season points. The groms show up early and stay late. The longboarders make it look like nothing at all.

Free to watch, free to park, and it all starts before most of the city is awake. Bring coffee and stand where the parents stand.
