Lucha Libre Weekend at MOLAA — Museum of Latin American Art, Long Beach
The Museum of Latin American Art in Long Beach is celebrating 30 years the only way that makes sense: by clearing the gallery floor and putting a wrestling ring in the middle of it. Lucha Libre Weekend runs September 25 through 27, starting Friday evening with a book launch for Luchadores Versus Everything, and building to Saturday night's main event where masked luchadores — El Cumbias, Kensei, Destiny, Rayo Star, Super Astro Jr., and more — clash under museum lighting that was never designed for a flying crossbody. This is not ironic. Lucha libre is a performing art that happens to involve a turnbuckle, and MOLAA has always understood that Latin American art does not stop at the frame. The colorful masks, the theatrical entrances, the crowd that screams the way a gallery crowd never does — it is all part of the same cultural tradition. Badges available at molaa.org. Individual event tickets go on sale September 7 if spaces remain.
