The Faroe Islands hold about fifty thousand people and produce weather that gets into the music. What arrives on stage is a voice doing two incompatible things at once - old Nordic folk singing, the kind passed down in a language most of the room does not speak, run through electronics that would not be out of place in a club. It should not cohere. It does, and the moment it lands is usually a song with no translation offered, where the crowd stops trying to follow the words and just takes the sound. Expect long held notes, a lot of low end, and a stillness in the room that is unusual for a Saturday. Worth knowing for anyone who has only heard the recordings: live, she sings a good deal of it unaccompanied, and the venue is small enough that you hear the room around the voice. Downtown Los Angeles, late November, all ages.
