History handed these women a single line each, usually somebody else's surname, and then closed the book. Jaclyn Backhaus reopens it and lets them talk. Four wildly different centuries collide across the evening, Hemingway's Paris and a Mughal court and a Welsh boarding school among them, and the women who were furniture in those stories take the furniture apart. It is loud and it is very funny and it turns serious about ten minutes before you expect it to. East West Players has been doing this in Little Tokyo for sixty-one years, longer than any theater of colour in the country, and this season they moved the entire company to pay-what-you-will pricing, so the barrier is whatever you decide it is. The rarity worth knowing: they play Mondays, October 19 and 26 at 7:30pm, which almost nobody in this city does. The run closes November 1 on Judge John Aiso Street.
