San Diego Ballet: Dia de los Muertos - The San Diego Museum of Art

Grief does not actually want to be comforted. It wants to be taken seriously, and most of what gets offered around this holiday is sugar skulls and a photo op. Here is the other version. San Diego Ballet dances Dia de los Muertos inside the museum at eight at night, hours after the galleries have emptied of everyone who came to look at paintings - bodies moving through rooms that were built for standing still. The company is small enough that you will recognize the same dancers from one piece to the next, and that recognition is half of how the evening works on you: by the third number you are no longer watching a dancer, you are watching someone specific, and you want it to go well for them. Two nights only, the Friday and then Halloween itself, which lands differently - you walk out of the second one into a park where the altars are already standing. Ninety minutes, 8pm both nights, 1450 El Prado in Balboa Park. The processions do not walk until the second of November, and that is a different night again.
