Minnesota State Fair 2026 — St. Paul, MN
Aug 27 – Sep 8, 2026 18 Minnesota State Fairgrounds, 1265 …

If you’ve ever wondered what makes a state fair worth traveling for, this is the answer. The Minnesota State Fair runs twelve days. Two hundred thousand people show up every single day. Minnesota's state fair has an atmosphere that cannot be manufactured. The fairgrounds sit on 322 permanent acres — exhibition halls, livestock barns, a racetrack, a Grandstand that hosts national music acts, and the famous food vendors who line every street. More than 70% of the food is available on a stick (that is not a metaphor). The Agriculture-Horticulture Building hosts produce competitions that Minnesotans train years for. The Creative Activities Building displays needlepoint and woodworking next to quilts of genuine museum quality. The livestock barns have actual farming families. Nothing about the Minnesota State Fair feels like it was designed for tourists — it feels like a community that allowed visitors to come watch, and is genuinely happy you're here. This is for anyone who has lived primarily in cities and genuinely wonders what American agricultural and working-class culture looks like when it isn't staged for outside consumption. The Minnesota State Fair is not a theme park version of rural life — it's where the farming community of the upper Midwest gathers alongside the urban Twin Cities metro, and both groups are completely at home. It is worth the trip from anywhere in the country. The state fair shuttle system is the only sane way to arrive — park at satellite lots and take the bus. Walking the fairgrounds takes a full day minimum; wear comfortable shoes. The food situation is comprehensive and genuinely excellent: Sweet Martha's cookies, cheese curds, pronto pups, walleye on a stick, and an ever-expanding list of experimental annual creations. Buy Grandstand concert tickets separately — the lineup goes on sale in spring and sells quickly. The free stages offer entertainment every hour. Check the schedule in advance and arrive early for popular demonstrations. The Great Minnesota Get-Together is on Falkor's Nation's Best list because scale and authenticity rarely coexist at this level. Two million visitors over 12 days — and somehow it doesn't feel overwhelming because the fairgrounds were built for exactly this. This is the American summer in a single experience: food, music, agriculture, competition, family, and the warmth of a community that has gathered like this for over 160 years. Admission and schedule at mnstatefair.org. August 27 – September 7, 2026, Falcon Heights (St. Paul), Minnesota.

Los Angeles County Fair 2026
Aug 28 – Sep 20, 2026 Fairplex, 1101 W McKinley Ave, Pom…

The Los Angeles County Fair at the Fairplex in Pomona runs for three weeks in September 2026 as one of the largest county fairs in the United States. The LA County Fair draws over 1.2 million visitors annually to the 487-acre Fairplex grounds for the annual combination of carnival rides, livestock competition, agricultural exhibits, live entertainment, and the specific food culture that exists only at county fairs. The fair food at the LA County Fair has become a cultural institution in itself — deep-fried everything, funnel cakes, corn dogs, cotton candy, fresh squeezed lemonade, and the creative food competition that produces the year's most Instagram-visible items. The Goat Hill area provides one of the only spaces in Los Angeles County where children can directly interact with farm animals in an educational setting. The evening entertainment schedule runs the Toyota Grandstand with headliner concerts across multiple genres — country, rock, Latin, R&B, and family-oriented acts rotate through the three-week run. Concert admission is included with general fair admission, making it one of the best concert values in Southern California during its run. The Fairplex is at 1101 W McKinley Ave in Pomona, accessible from the I-10 at White Ave exit. Metro Foothill Gold Line serves Pomona during the fair with shuttle service to the Fairplex. Parking on-site. Daily admission and multi-day passes available online at reduced rates versus gate pricing. The fair runs late August through late September.

LA County Fair 2026 — Pomona Fairplex
Aug 28, 2026 $12-$20 1101 W McKinley Ave, Pomona, CA 91…

The LA County Fair runs from late August through early October — the largest fair in the United States, spread across 487 acres at the Pomona Fairplex. Forty rides. Three hundred vendors. Live music that runs from country to cumbia to hip-hop on competing stages. The competitive exhibitions where people enter their rabbits, their quilts, their chile peppers, their decorated cakes — and wait to see if they won. Nobody at the LA County Fair is doing the same thing. The family on the roller coaster and the couple in the livestock barn and the group eating birria in the international food hall are all there for the same reason: the county decided to throw a fair and everyone came. The Fair is an argument that California still has a public life shared across its communities. When three million people pass through the same fairgrounds over six weeks, some of them are bound to run into each other. 1101 W McKinley Ave, Pomona, CA 91768. Parking $15. Gate admission varies — check lacountyfair.com for current pricing and schedule. Late August through early October.

The second summer movie night at Crystal Cove State Park: the shoreline becomes an open-air theater again, one of the few places in Southern California where you can watch a film with actual ocean waves audible through the sound mix. Bring blankets, low beach chairs, and layers. The Crystal Cove coastline on PCH between Newport Beach and Laguna is reliably cooler after dark than anywhere inland. Entry is the state park day-use fee ($15 per vehicle, managed by the Crystal Cove Alliance). August 28, 2026. 7pm. Film title announced closer to the date at crystalcove.org. Epcot International Food and Wine Festival 2026 — Lake Buena Vista, FL
Aug 29 – Nov 22, 2026 EPCOT, Walt Disney World, Lake Bue…

Epcot International Food and Wine Festival is Walt Disney World's annual celebration of global cuisine, craft beer, and culinary culture held at EPCOT in Lake Buena Vista, Florida — one of the longest-running food festivals in the United States, running from late August through mid-November each year. What distinguishes Epcot Food and Wine from every other food festival in America is the architecture it happens inside. World Showcase's eleven international pavilions — each representing a different country — become the setting for outdoor marketplace kiosks serving small-plate dishes and beverages curated to reflect that nation's culinary identity. You walk from France to Morocco to Japan while holding a glass of something that belongs there. The scale is massive and the pacing is entirely yours. This is not a buffet line. This is a passport for people who eat seriously. Is it worth attending? Yes, without reservation, if you take food culture seriously. Spend an entire day drifting between cultures, eating your way around the world with drinks in hand, and doing it inside one of the most thoughtfully designed public spaces in America. It is not for people who need a checklist or a schedule. The festival is ambient, self-directed, and genuinely global. What to know before you go: Park admission is required — this is EPCOT, not a standalone event. Marketplace dishes are small-plate and require payment separately (card and MagicBand both accepted). Dining reservations for full-service restaurants should be booked months ahead through My Disney Experience — walk-ups rarely get seated at peak hours. Evenings host the Eat to the Beat concert series; early afternoon is when the marketplaces are least crowded. Wear comfortable shoes and budget more than you think you will spend. Epcot Food and Wine is on Falkor's Nation's Best list because it is one of the rare American events where cultural identity, culinary craft, and sheer operational scale converge in a setting that earns the word curated. The Disney infrastructure means it runs at a quality most food festivals cannot approach. You do not need to be a Disney person to find it worth the trip. You just need to take food seriously. Festival runs August 29 through November 22, 2026. Visit disneyworld.disney.go.com for tickets and reservations. The Eat to the Beat concert series brings live musical performances to the America Gardens Theatre throughout the festival run, adding a live music layer that elevates evenings beyond dining alone.

GameOn! Expo San Diego 2026
Aug 29 – Aug 30, 2026 San Diego, CA

GameOn! Expo brings retro gaming, classic arcade, and video game collecting culture to the San Diego area for a full weekend of gaming history, competitive play, and the specific joy of experiencing games in the context of the community that preserved and celebrates them. The expo features playable setups spanning console gaming from the Atari 2600 through the sixth-generation systems, a rare and collectible game marketplace where dealers bring their most significant finds, high-score competitions on classic arcade titles, speedrunning demonstrations with community commentary, and panel discussions on game preservation, game music, and the history of specific platforms and publishers. What distinguishes a gaming expo from a gaming convention is the depth of the collector dimension — dealers at GameOn! bring games, hardware, memorabilia, and items that don't exist in retail channels, and the conversations between collectors about condition, variant editions, and finding are as much of the event as the gaming itself. The San Diego area gaming community has significant depth — proximity to the military bases (which brought gaming hardware to the area in large quantities during the 1980s and 90s) and the general tech culture of the region means the local collector base is serious and well-established. Venue and dates for 2026 confirmed through the GameOn! Expo website and social media channels. All ages welcome. Both single-day and weekend passes available.

One Saturday a year, an entire neighborhood's musical history spills out of the rooms and onto the street. The Leimert Park Jazz Festival sets up on the last Saturday in August, on the rooftop parking deck of Baldwin Hills Crenshaw Plaza, and runs from late morning until past sundown. The lineup is the people who play The World Stage all year, plus the visiting masters who come back to Leimert when invited. It is a free-spirited day -- vendors, food, kids on shoulders, elders in lawn chairs, dancers when somebody plays the right thing. The festival has been running since the early 2000s, anchored by the same people who anchor the year-round programming at The World Stage. Saturday August 29, 11:30 in the morning until 8:30 at night. Outdoor -- bring a hat. Leimert Park in late August is one day that nobody who grew up in this part of the city ever forgets.

Roller derby built itself entirely through community. WFTDA leagues form through skaters who want to compete, not through franchises looking for markets. Orange County Roller Derby has been part of the SoCal flat-track scene for years, and the August 29 bout at The Rinks in Irvine is their Best of the West Coast Showdown: a full afternoon of competition running 3PM to 7PM. The afternoon opens with Junior Roller Derby at 3PM, then transitions to the main bout at 5PM: OCRD Vitamin C Squad versus Ventura County Derby Darlins. Two teams, four hours, one rink. The Rinks at 3150 Barranca Parkway in Irvine is a regular OCRD competition venue the community knows. For those who have never watched flat-track roller derby live: the contact is real, the strategy is real, and by the middle of the first jam you will understand exactly what you have been missing. The physicality is obvious. The chess-like positioning is what keeps people coming back. Family attendance encouraged. Children under three free. Spectators should bring their own chairs for floor seating. Online tickets available through OCRD's website before the event.

My Chemical Romance returns to the stage to celebrate the 20th anniversary of The Black Parade, one of the most important rock albums of the 2000s. The band will perform the album in full at Petco Park in San Diego — the open-air stadium known for some of the most memorable concert experiences in Southern California. The Black Parade defined a generation: its theatrical, operatic sound influenced an entire decade of rock and alternative music, and tracks like Welcome to the Black Parade, Famous Last Words, and I Don't Love You remain anthems for fans who grew up with the record. This is the definitive version of a full-album anniversary show. Petco Park holds over 40,000 for stadium shows and provides clear sightlines from the field and lower bowl. Doors open at 5:00 PM. The stadium is easily accessible from the 5 Freeway, and the Gaslamp Trolley Station is a short walk away. Parking in the East Village and Gaslamp Quarter is widely available. This will be one of the defining rock concert moments in San Diego in years — do not miss it.

San Diego Padres vs St. Louis Cardinals at Petco Park — September
Sep 2, 2026 100 Park Blvd, San Diego, CA 92101

September at Petco Park has a different weight than the rest of the season. The summer is ending, the pennant race is in its final stretch, and every game carries stakes that the May card doesn't. September 3rd, 2026 — the Padres hosting the Cardinals — arrives at the exact moment when the season either breaks your heart or gives you something to hold onto through October. Petco Park is one of the best places in baseball to watch this happen. The left field seats sit close enough to hear the infield chatter. The Park at the Park fills with kids running on the grass while their parents watch from the berm. The skyline behind the outfield goes golden around the seventh inning, and if you're in the right seat at the right moment, that sight is the specific reason people fly to San Diego for this. The Cardinals bring a lineup worth watching. St. Louis in September means pride — they play with it regardless of where they are in the standings. That makes September 3rd a real game, not a formality. Check the schedule and ticket options at mlb.com/padres. The sun sets on the right side of the stands and the breeze comes in off the water. There are worse ways to spend a Thursday evening in San Diego.

Dragon Con 2026 — Atlanta, GA
Sep 3 – Sep 7, 2026 From $180 Marriott Marquis Atlanta, 265 Peac…

Dragon Con fills five hotels in downtown Atlanta simultaneously over Labor Day weekend. The Saturday parade shuts down streets. Ninety thousand people across five days — the largest multi-genre fan convention in the United States. The hotel structure is part of the experience. Dragon Con takes over the Marriott Marquis, Hilton, Hyatt, Westin, Sheraton, and AmericasMart simultaneously — connected by skywalks, each with its own programming and atmosphere. The Marriott atrium, famous for its multi-story interior balconies, fills with costumes and spectators until 4am. The Hyatt has the gaming rooms. The parade through downtown Atlanta on Saturday morning, 90,000 people in costume marching through the streets, is a public event that draws spectators who've never bought a badge. Dragon Con is worth it for science fiction and fantasy fans who want density over prestige. The programming is fan-driven and runs across 70+ tracks simultaneously: Star Trek, Star Wars, gaming, anime, horror, costuming, comics, tabletop RPG. You will not see the mainstream film studio Hall H style announcements that SDCC gets, but you will find panels and conversations led by creators and experts who are genuinely passionate rather than promotional. The celebrity guest list — actors, authors, musicians, artists — is extensive and accessible. Practical notes: Pre-register well before the event; badges for Labor Day weekend routinely sell out. The connected hotel system means everything is walkable in climate-controlled comfort — a feature in Atlanta in September. Book hotel rooms in the official block early; they sell in January. The Dragon Con parade requires no badge and is worth attending on its own. Dragon Con earns its Nation's Best position because it is proof that fan culture, when allowed to organize on its own terms, produces something no studio activation can replicate. Atlanta, Georgia. September 3–7, 2026. Dragon Con was founded in 1987 by a group of Atlanta gaming enthusiasts and has never been acquired or corporate-ized. That independence is visible in how it runs: the programming is fan-proposed and fan-led, the celebrity guest selection reflects genuine fan interest rather than studio promotion schedules, and the convention's identity is remarkably consistent despite 90,000 attendees. This is rare at events of this scale. Dragon Con remains, after nearly four decades, a fan convention that happens to be enormous.

Dragon Con 2026 — Atlanta, GA
Sep 3 – Sep 7, 2026 Downtown Atlanta, GA

Dragon Con 2026 is one of America's largest and most beloved fan conventions — a five-day celebration of science fiction, fantasy, gaming, comics, horror, animation, and pop culture held in downtown Atlanta every Labor Day weekend. Drawing over 85,000 attendees from all 50 states and dozens of countries, Dragon Con has grown from a small gaming convention in 1987 into a cultural institution that transforms the heart of Atlanta into a living fantasy world. What does Dragon Con feel like? Imagine stepping off a hotel escalator and into a dimension where every hallway is a costume runway, every lobby is a gathering of the most creative people you have ever encountered, and every elevator has a 20-minute wait because it is packed with Jedi knights, Final Fantasy characters, and screen-accurate replicas of spacesuits. The energy is unlike any other convention on earth — it runs 24 hours a day across five host hotels connected by skywalks, meaning the party never stops and neither does the discovery. The parade on Saturday morning alone draws over 50,000 spectators along Peachtree Street. Panels, concerts, film premieres, cosplay competitions, gaming rooms, and dances fill every hour. Atlanta's August heat means nothing once you are inside this machine. Is Dragon Con worth it? If you have ever loved a fandom — any fandom — and felt the thrill of being surrounded by people who love it as much as you do, Dragon Con is worth every dollar and every hour of travel. This is not a family-friendly spectacle designed for casual tourists. It is for people who came to go deep. The attendees are the entertainment. The panels are smart. The guests are genuine legends. If you want a safe, predictable convention experience, there are better options. Dragon Con is for the ones who want the real thing. One specific highlight: Dragon Con Night at the Georgia Aquarium on September 5, 2026 — an after-hours private event inside one of the world’s largest aquariums, available exclusively to Dragon Con badge holders. Before you go: pre-register months in advance — badge lines for walk-ups are infamous. Book hotels in the host properties (Marriott Marquis, Hyatt Regency, Hilton, Westin, Sheraton) as soon as registration opens, because they sell out within hours. The convention does not have a centralized hall — programming spreads across all five hotels and the Hilton Americas ballrooms. Download the Dragon Con app before you arrive; it is the only reliable way to navigate. Bring comfortable shoes. Drink water. The Saturday parade is unmissable — stake out a spot on Peachtree by 9am. Dragon Con earns its place on Falkor's Nation's Best list because it represents something rare: a convention that has stayed genuinely weird, fan-driven, and independent. There is no corporate parent sanitizing the experience. Fans made it; fans run it; fans are the reason anyone comes back. Labor Day weekend 2026 — Atlanta, GA. Badges available at dragoncon.org.

DragonCon Watch Party — Los Angeles 2026
Sep 3 – Sep 7, 2026 Los Angeles, CA

While DragonCon itself is held in Atlanta, Los Angeles has one of the strongest fan communities for the convention in the country — and every Labor Day weekend, that community gathers for local watch parties, cosplay meetups, and the shared experience of watching DragonCon programming online together rather than celebrating apart. The LA DragonCon Watch Party brings together fans of science fiction, fantasy, horror, gaming, anime, and genre entertainment who couldn't make the Atlanta trip — or who treat the Labor Day local event as a warm-up for planning next year's pilgrimage to the convention itself. The gathering typically happens at a nerd bar or geek-friendly event space in the Los Angeles area and combines DragonCon programming via livestream with local cosplay competitions, trivia, panel discussions, and the specific energy of a fan community that considers itself a genuine community. DragonCon programming streams publicly for some events through YouTube and official channels during Labor Day weekend — the watch party format provides a collective experience that watching alone at home can't replicate. Cosplay from DragonCon-adjacent properties is always present, from Tolkien to Star Trek to Critical Role to D&D. The specific venue varies annually — check Los Angeles genre fan groups on Facebook, the LA Geeks social networks, or r/losangeles for the organized 2026 watch party location. All ages at most venues; some locations are 21+ depending on the host bar.

The Carlsbad Music Festival returns to Magee Park in downtown Carlsbad for its 22nd annual celebration of contemporary classical and new music, one of the most distinctive free outdoor music festivals in Southern California. The three-day festival brings world-class ensembles and soloists to a beautiful park setting in the Carlsbad Village, offering performances that range from intimate chamber music to large ensemble works under the open sky. The festival is known for programming that challenges and rewards adventurous listeners: new commissions, West Coast premieres, experimental chamber works, and collaborations between classical performers and artists from jazz, electronic, and world music traditions. Past performers have included some of the most respected new-music ensembles in the country. Magee Park is located at 2560 Orion Way in Carlsbad Village, walkable from the Carlsbad Village train station (COASTER/Amtrak). Admission is free for all performances. Bring a blanket or low chair. Food trucks and vendors are on-site. The Carlsbad Village setting adds to the experience — the festival grounds back up to a lagoon, and the afternoon light through the festival weekend is exceptional. Pre-concert talks and artist meet-and-greets are part of the programming. This is the festival for music lovers who find most outdoor summer concerts too predictable. The Carlsbad Music Festival takes the audience seriously. Free. Family friendly. One of the hidden gems of the SoCal summer calendar.

The Long Beach Greek Festival is one of the longest-running cultural festivals in Southern California, held annually at Saint Anthony Greek Orthodox Church in Long Beach and celebrating Greek culture through food, dance, music, and community in a setting that feels like someone moved a Greek village block party to California. The festival runs across Labor Day weekend with three days of continuous Greek food — spanakopita, souvlaki, gyros, loukoumades (Greek donuts), baklava, galaktoboureko, and the full spread of traditional Greek cuisine prepared by the church community kitchen that has been making these dishes for decades. The food lines move fast and every item is freshly made. Live Greek music and folk dancing run throughout the weekend on an outdoor stage. The Hellenic Folk Dance groups perform traditional dances from different Greek regions — the synchronized circle dances are a visual highlight — and audience participation is actively encouraged. Greek goods, crafts, icons, jewelry, and olive oil products fill the vendor area. Saint Anthony Greek Orthodox Church is located at 3950 Cherry Ave in Long Beach. Parking in the surrounding neighborhood; the festival is walkable from adjacent streets. Admission is charged at the gate — typically a small fee for adults, children free. This is a church-community festival in the best sense: organized by and for the Greek American community of Long Beach and the South Bay, welcoming everyone who wants to spend a day immersed in that culture.

The Malibu Chili Cook-Off runs Labor Day Weekend September 4–7, 2026 at Malibu Bluffs Recreation Area with views of the Pacific Coast Highway and the Santa Monica Mountains. One of the oldest outdoor food events on the California coast, it combines competitive chili judging with carnival rides, artisan vendors, live music, and a community fair atmosphere that draws Malibu locals and visitors from across Los Angeles County. Chili teams compete across multiple categories including traditional red, salsa, and specialty divisions. Celebrity chefs and local restaurants enter alongside neighborhood teams who have been perfecting their recipes for decades. Attendees vote in People's Choice categories throughout the weekend. Beyond the chili, the event features artisan food vendors, a craft beer and spirits garden, kids activities, and a full entertainment lineup across multiple stages. Labor Day Weekend is reliably cooler in Malibu than inland LA — ocean breezes keep temperatures comfortable even when the Valley hits triple digits. Pacific Coast Highway can be congested during the event; arriving early or using the PCH bus route is recommended. Parking available in designated lots near the venue. A strong annual tradition for families and friend groups looking to close out the summer season on the coast.
