For a generation that grew up screaming along to Welcome to the Black Parade in bedrooms plastered with band posters, My Chemical Romance at the Hollywood Bowl on October 21 is not just a concert -- it is a summoning. The Bowl's open-air acoustics and the October night sky turn every anthem into something larger than it was on the record, and the crowd will sing louder than the PA system at least twice. MCR's catalog runs from the raw punk fury of I Brought You My Bullets to the theatrical grandeur of The Black Parade to the synth-soaked Danger Days, and a setlist at the Bowl will pull from all of it. The band has been selective about touring since their reunion, making every announced date feel like it might be the last one for a while. They come back every October, invited by marigolds and mezcal and ninety handmade altars that fill Hemisfair with the kind of color that makes you forget what century you are in. Muertos Fest is the largest Day of the Dead celebration in the nation, and it does not feel like a festival — it feels like a family reunion where the guest list includes people who are no longer alive. Over three days, the park transforms into a living altar: two separate processions wind through streets lined with papel picado, four stages carry live music from cumbia to corridos, and the Muertos Mercado sells folk art from artisans who learned their craft from the same people honored on the altars. Friday night opens with Presente, an evening of quiet altar viewing with sensory-friendly hours from five to seven — the softest entry point imaginable. This is not tourism. This is a city that has celebrated its dead openly for longer than most American cities have existed. San Antonio's Dia de los Muertos tradition is not borrowed or curated — it is inherited, and Muertos Fest is the room where that inheritance goes public. The processions are not performances — they are prayers in motion, and the crowd joins them naturally because the boundary between audience and participant was never drawn. The altars are not decoration — each one is a conversation with someone who is gone, built by someone who is not ready to stop talking. When the sun goes down on Saturday night and the music is playing across four stages and the marigold petals are everywhere and the faces in the crowd are painted like skulls but laughing — that is when you understand why this is the largest celebration of its kind in the country. The parents already know: the cartoon dog show that plays on loop in your living room is somehow making you cry over a game of keep-away, and now there is a version your kid can watch happen in front of them, in a room, with the lights down. Bluey's Big Play brings the animated series to the stage for the first time ever, using puppetry and live performance to extend the world of Bluey, Bingo, Bandit, and Chilli beyond the screen. It is built specifically for children ages 2 through 7, but anyone who watches the series regularly knows it rewards the grown-ups just as richly - and this production includes new material written just for the stage. Running time is about 55 minutes with no intermission, which is exactly right for the age group. Arrive early; the lobby experience is part of the fun. The Hollywood Pantages is a 1920s movie palace seating 2,700 on Hollywood Boulevard near Highland Avenue, accessible by Metro B Line (Red) at Hollywood and Highland Station. The kind of night where someone's fake blood gets on a stranger's jacket and the stranger just salutes and keeps walking. The Zombie Crawl is the reason that night happens. One wristband opens 25 bars across the Gaslamp Quarter. Welcome shots at each stop. DJs. Drink specials. The entire downtown transforms into a costumed parade of the undead that spills between venues until last call. The kickoff is at American Junkie on Fifth Ave — arrive before seven or the face-paint line wraps around the block and you lose the first hour to latex and eyeliner. A record turns ten and you realise you have been dating the rest of your life against it. You know where you were living. You know who you were trying to impress. The album did not change; the distance did. Bright Moments came out in 2016 and became one of those records that spread entirely sideways — SoundCloud, shared links, a friend saying just listen to it. Aaron Velasquez builds it out of crate-dug funk and live instrumentation rather than presets, which is why it has aged like a record and not like a playlist. Shrimpnose opens. Quartyard is an outdoor lot made of shipping containers in the East Village, so this is a six p.m. show under an open sky rather than a dark room — closer to a block party than a concert, and the right shape for a record that always sounded like late summer. Halfway through you stop being able to tell which of the two men the sound is coming from, and that confusion is the entire point rather than a side effect. Hainaux works as a beatboxer the way a percussionist works, building rhythm out of breath and lip and throat with no instrument anywhere in the room. Chaignaud is a dancer who sings while asking his body to do things that ought to make singing physically impossible, and he has spent a career refusing to let audiences separate the voice from the labour that produces it. A mirliton is the little reed pipe handed to children at carnival, the kind that sounds nearly like a human voice and never quite gets there, which is a fair warning about what these two are after. Two nights only, in a room small enough to hear the breath between phrases. October 23 and 24 at 8 PM, the Nimoy on Westwood.

The strangest thing about it is the setting. This is the stretch between City Hall and the Music Center — the most administrative real estate in Los Angeles — and for one day in October it is covered end to end with altars for the dead. Schools build them. Artists build them. Families build them for one specific person and then stand nearby, half hoping somebody asks. Marigold pathways run the length of the park, sugar skull installations sit where you would otherwise be hurrying to a meeting, and music and dance run from afternoon straight through the evening while food vendors line the perimeter. Tens of thousands come through, and it stays free, because the point is that anyone can walk in — including people who did not grow up with the tradition and want to understand it. Grand Park downtown, off the Metro at Civic Center. Come early if you want real time with the altars. Make your list on the way there. You will want it the moment you see the first one.

The parade has been rolling through downtown Anaheim since before Disneyland opened. That's the part that gets lost — this wasn't built to compete with anything. It was built because a neighborhood wanted an excuse to dress up, walk down the street together, and see what the kid next door turned herself into this year. The festival fills Center Greens from 11 AM with live music, costume contests (for children and dogs, because this town knows its audience), craft vendors and enough face painting to keep a line moving until sundown. The parade at 7 PM is the nighttime version — floats lit up on Anaheim Boulevard, community groups and school marching bands and the kind of participation that only happens when a tradition has run long enough that the people in the parade used to be the kids watching it. No ticket, no admission fee — the city decided a long time ago that the Saturday before Halloween belongs to everyone. The costume contest has categories you won't find at a corporate event: scariest, funniest, most original, best group. And best dog. Always best dog. October 24. Grief does not disappear because somebody told you to move on. It goes looking for a place to be held. For twenty-seven years, tens of thousands of people have carried theirs into a cemetery on Santa Monica Boulevard and turned a night of mourning into the most alive gathering in Los Angeles. This is not a costume party and it is not a spectacle staged for visitors. Hundreds of hand-built altars glow with marigolds and photographs of specific people. Aztec dancers move through copal smoke. Families sit on the grass beside the names they came for, and sugar skulls get pressed into the hands of children who will remember doing this. You come to honor your own dead and you leave having grieved beside an entire city. Midday into midnight at Hollywood Forever, alongside the Mexican and Chicano community that has kept this tradition burning. Come if you are carrying someone.

A beer festival. For people who brought their dog. In a park. In October. Someone finally got the formula right. Barktoberfest is Riverside's only dog-friendly craft beer festival — an afternoon at White Park where you can taste through a lineup of local breweries while your dog does the thing dogs do at parks, which is meet every other dog and immediately forget them. Craft beer tastings, food bites for purchase, live music, and special activities fill the afternoon. VIP, general admission, and designated driver tickets mean everyone has a way in. Proceeds go to the Mary S. Roberts Pet Adoption Center, which means every beer you taste is technically a charitable act. The event is 21+ because the craft beer is the draw, but the dogs are the reason half the attendees showed up. The costume gets worn once. You spent three weeks on it, or forty dollars and a lot of regret on it, and then Halloween lands on a weeknight and the whole thing is over in ninety minutes of doorbells. This is the pressure valve for that — an afternoon in a park where the costume gets a second outing and an actual audience. Carnival games, a costume contest, free food, three hours on a Saturday in late October when the light in Pasadena goes gold early and every kid in the neighbourhood is already in character. It is small on purpose and it is free, which means the crowd is the people who live within a mile of Victory Park rather than anyone who bought a ticket. Worth knowing if you are bringing someone small: three to six in the afternoon means the whole thing happens in daylight and finishes before dinner, which is a very different proposition from a night event with a tired four-year-old. Once a month the Pierce College lot fills with about a hundred and seventy dealers and the people who hunt them. Mid-century furniture. Denim with exactly the right wear. Costume jewelry, oddball signage, instruments somebody loved and somebody else is about to. The early crowd arrives at seven for first pick; the later crowd comes to talk to the dealers, which is its own reason to go. Parking is free, cash and Venmo both work, and after a few months the buyers half-know each other. Fourth Sunday of the month, out in Woodland Hills. The thing you cannot find online is exactly what the fourth Sunday is for.

The course winds past the Bruin Bear and the John Wooden statue and finishes outside Drake Stadium, with a Candyland zone for the kids somewhere in the middle of it. Under all of the costumes, this is a gathering of survivors, families, and the people who love them, raising money to fight pancreatic cancer through the Hirshberg Foundation. For twenty-nine years it has turned grief into a costumed morning of motion — a kid in a dinosaur suit running beside somebody carrying a photograph, and nobody finding that strange for a second. You do not have to be fast. You just have to show up, in whatever costume makes the morning lighter. Everybody out there is running for a name. Bring yours.

Los Angeles began on this ground in 1781, and once a year the oldest street in the city fills with altars for people who are not here anymore. Each ofrenda is a specific person. A photograph, the food they liked, the flowers, the small object nobody outside the family would recognize as meaningful. Some are quiet and family-sized. Some are full artistic installations built for a public that will never learn the name at the center of them. You end up walking slowly whether you meant to or not. Aztec dancers work the length of the street, mariachi and folklórico fill the little plaza, and artisans sell papel picado and calavera art from the same stalls that stand there every other day of the year. Free, at Olvera Street beside Union Station, where nearly every Metro line meets. Go, and bring the name of someone you have not said out loud in a while. That is all it asks of you.

You used to go to shows. Then you had a kid, and the math stopped working — the babysitter, the 9 PM doors, the guilt either way. That trade is the ache this fixes, and it fixes it by refusing the premise. A live band plays the songs at real volume through the real PA, and the floor stays empty of chairs on purpose so that the children can move however they want during it. Nobody shushes anybody. Parents end up dancing harder than the kids, which everyone pretends not to notice. The format has run for years in rooms like this one and the unwritten rule is that you arrive early enough to claim floor space near the stage, because the front two rows are where the four-year-olds organize themselves into something resembling a pit. The Highland Park hall has a balcony for anyone who needs to sit down and watch it happen. Music at 11:30 AM, all ages, upstairs at 104 N Avenue 56. It runs most months with a different songbook, so the families who come once tend to come back.

Grief is easier to carry when it is shared, and no tradition understands that better than Dia de los Muertos — the day the dead are not mourned but welcomed back with marigolds, candles, their favorite foods, and photographs propped on ofrendas built with aching care. Oceanside throws one of the coast's most beautiful versions, filling Pier View Way with hand-built altars, face paint, folklorico, and the low golden light coming off the pier. It is somber and joyful at once, a whole community teaching its kids that the people we lose are never really gone as long as we keep setting a place for them. For the Latino families who have carried this for generations, it is sacred; for everyone else, it is a lesson in how to hold loss with beauty. Sunday, October 25, 2026, downtown Oceanside, free.
