Bandfest 2027
Dec 29, 2026 $26.50 Robinson Stadium, Pasadena City Co…

Three days before a hundred million people watch them go by in ninety seconds, the bands play their whole show. That is the trade nobody tells you about: on Colorado Boulevard a band gets one block and one corner, and everything they built over a year of six-a.m. rehearsals is gone before the float behind them clears the turn. On a community college football field in Pasadena, they get the entire field show — the drill, the soloists, the closer, the part where the drumline turns around. Bands travel from across the country and from Mexico and Japan to be here, and the parents in the stands have usually flown farther than the kids. The tell that you are among your own people is the sound after a difficult passage lands: not polite applause, but the specific roar of several hundred people who know exactly how hard that was. Gates open an hour before each show. Free parking sits in Structure 4 off Del Mar. Robinson Stadium, Pasadena City College, December 29 and 30.

You have seen the horses on New Year's morning and you have never once seen them up close. They pass in a blur of silver saddle and braided mane somewhere between a marching band and a float made of seaweed, and then they are gone and the broadcast cuts to a commercial. The horses get a day of their own, three days early, in Burbank. Charro riders work the reata. Escaramuza teams ride sidesaddle in formation at a gallop, which is the sort of thing you have to watch twice to believe. Drill teams thread patterns that only make sense from the top of the bleachers. Trick riders do the thing where they go under the horse. What makes it worth the drive is the part the parade cannot show you: the barn area, where the animals stand around being enormous and patient while riders in full regalia adjust tack and argue about nothing. There is a vendor court and food. December 29, ten in the morning until three.

A song you have not chosen to hear in twenty years comes on over a grocery store PA and your whole chest goes sideways. You were maybe twelve when 'When the Children Cry' first got to you. You did not have language yet for what a song could do to a person, and then suddenly you did, and it was that one. Mike Tramp still sings it, still in the same key, which is the quietly astonishing fact underneath this whole evening. This is night four of a six-night run where the Whisky hands each date to a different band that mattered in the eighties, and Tuesday belongs to White Lion. Expect the ballads to land harder than the singles. A thing regulars count on here: the between-song talk runs long and gets genuinely personal, because the room is small enough that it feels less like a concert and more like being told something. Tuesday the 29th. Tickets open around $44 and the doors go at six.

Every day · Next Dec 29 San Diego Civic Theatre, 1100 3rd …

The movie became a meme became a cultural institution became a Broadway musical became the thing every family does between Christmas and New Year's because nothing else captures that specific week-between-holidays energy quite like Buddy the Elf trying to hug a stranger. Elf the Musical at the San Diego Civic Theatre is the holiday show that works for the four-year-old and the forty-year-old in the same row — and both of them will be singing 'Santa's Coming to Town' on the drive home. The touring production brings the full Broadway staging: the sets are enormous, the costumes are absurd, and the cast treats the material with exactly the right amount of seriousness, which is none at all. Broadway San Diego closes the 2026 calendar with this one, and the timing is perfect — the week between Christmas and New Year's when nobody has anywhere to be and everyone needs somewhere to go. December 29, 2026 through January 3, 2027. San Diego Civic Theatre, downtown.

Lights All Night 2026 — New Year's Eve EDM Festival, Dallas, TX
Dec 30 – Dec 31, 2026 Fair Park, 3809 Grand Ave, Dallas,…

What it is: Texas' longest-running EDM festival transforms Fair Park in Dallas into a New Year's Eve celebration that makes midnight feel like the beginning of something, not the end. Lights All Night returns December 30–31, 2026 for a two-night, multi-stage takeover headlined by Tiësto, Chris Lake, Subtronics, Gryffin, I Hate Models, ARMNHMR, and ATLiens — spanning house, techno, bass, dubstep, and drum and bass across multiple stages and six football fields of production. The experience: This is the festival that proved EDM belongs in winter. The cold air sharpens every sense. The bass hits your chest before you hear the drop. Confetti cannons fire at midnight. The year changes mid-song and nobody stops dancing because the beat doesn't stop either. Every December, the electronic music community in the South converges here because nowhere else does NYE like this — it's not a party with music, it's a festival that happens to contain midnight. Worth it? If you're the person who counts down with a DJ instead of a champagne glass, this is the only New Year's Eve that makes sense. If you've ever spent January 1st in silence because the night before was too loud to follow, you already understand what this festival sells. Two nights. 18+. Tickets from $286. What to know before you go: Fair Park is outdoors — Dallas in December is cold but manageable. Dress in layers you don't mind losing. The water stations save lives. The sound bleed between stages is minimal, which means you can hop from house to dubstep without the transitions being painful. The cultural moment: Lights All Night is the longest-running EDM festival in Texas, and its placement on NYE makes it more than a music event — it is a ritual. The people who go every year treat it like a pilgrimage. The people who go once understand why. In a country full of New Year's options — rooftop champagne, house parties, watching the ball drop on a screen — LAN offers the version where midnight happens inside a bass drop and 15,000 strangers become the same organism for exactly one second. That collective exhale at 12:00:01 is the product. The music is how you get there.

New Year's Eve Times Square 2026 — New York, NY
Dec 31 – Dec 31, 2026 Times Square, 1 Times Square, New …

It sounds optional right up until you are standing in a street you have seen a thousand times on screens, in the cold, with a million people counting down together - and then you understand why New Yorkers largely skip it and visitors from everywhere else largely cannot explain why they needed to do it once. New Year's Eve in Times Square operates as organized chaos at maximum human scale, and the ball has been dropping since 1907. Streets close to vehicle traffic by mid-afternoon, and people begin staking viewing positions hours before midnight. The ball itself is 12 feet across, weighs nearly 12,000 pounds, and is covered in 2,688 Waterford crystal triangles lit by LEDs. The confetti that fills the air at midnight is printed with handwritten wishes submitted in advance by people around the world - a detail most people only discover after it has already fallen on them. NYPD maintains sector-by-sector crowd control; once you are inside a viewing zone, you stay in it until after midnight. It is worth attending if you have never been and want to see what a city looks and sounds like at its most collectively alive. It is explicitly not worth it if you require warmth, freedom of movement, or reliable access to food and restrooms during a five-to-six-hour wait. Viewing zones open around 3 PM and fill from the stage outward, so arrive by early afternoon for a direct sightline to the ball. Bathrooms are extremely scarce with very long lines. Alcohol is prohibited in the public viewing areas. Dress for 25 to 35 degrees with wind, and bring hand warmers and layers. Your phone will likely not work for the first hour of 2027 as every carrier network in Manhattan saturates at once. Hotels within walking distance book out months ahead. That midnight moment is not available on any stream. December 31st, One Times Square.

Midnight is overrated. At Belmont Park, the countdown happens at noon — because the best New Year's party is the one the kids can actually stay awake for. The MEGA Noon Year Celebration runs December 31, 2026 from 10:30 AM to 1:00 PM at The Plunge at Belmont Park in Mission Beach. Heated pool, floating obstacle course, DJ, balloon drops, and an apple cider toast at the stroke of noon. It sells out every year because there are exactly zero other New Year's events designed for families with children who melt down after 8 PM. The Plunge at Belmont Park, 3146 Mission Blvd, San Diego, CA 92109. Tickets $25-$50 at belmontpark.com. The adults get to celebrate. The kids get to celebrate. Nobody gets a babysitter. First Night Boston 2027 — New Year's Eve Arts Festival
Dec 31, 2026 Copley Square, 560 Boylston St, Bo…

The country's oldest and largest New Year's Eve arts festival does not require a ticket, a reservation, or knowing somebody. First Night Boston turns the city into an open stage on December 31 — live music spilling out of churches and concert halls, dance performances in hotel lobbies, figure skating on the Common, ice sculptures catching the last light of the year, and fireworks over the harbor that turn the waterfront into something a painter would have to apologize for inventing. All of it is free. There is something particular about a city that decided decades ago that the best way to close the year is to give everyone the same night, regardless of what they can afford, and then actually followed through on it for forty consecutive years. The celebration runs across multiple venues from the Back Bay to the Waterfront, building through the afternoon and evening until midnight, when Boston Harbor lights up and everyone who was a stranger an hour ago is suddenly cheering for the same uncertain future. Copley Square and the harbor are the anchors, but the real event is the walk between them — every block holds something you did not expect, a string quartet in a doorway or a stilt walker handing out sparklers or a choir that makes you stop and forget where you were going. The afternoon programming is built for families — puppet shows, face painting, music workshops, a parade of illuminated lanterns through the Back Bay. The evening shifts to concerts and DJ sets and the ice sculptures start glowing from inside. By 10 PM the harbor fills with people staking out spots for the midnight fireworks, and the air carries that specific electricity of a million people deciding at the same time that next year will be different. First Night has been copied by over 200 cities worldwide, but the original still runs in the city where it started, and that matters more than it should. Copley Square, 560 Boylston St, Boston, MA. December 31, 2026. Free.

New Year's Eve in this city is mostly a tax. Somebody's cousin knows a promoter, the ticket runs ninety dollars, the champagne is a thimble of something sweet, and at 12:04 you are standing among strangers wondering why you left the house at all. There is another version of the night. A band named after the city plays the club that built the city's reputation, the bill runs six acts deep, and nobody in the room is performing having a good time for anyone's camera. Phil Lewis has been doing this since the Strip was still genuinely dangerous. Urick, Taz Taylor Band, Nasty Passion, Philthy Rych, Evil Blade and Fire 'N Ice fill out the card. The thing to understand about a stacked bill here is that it starts early and runs long, so the opener you have never heard of is very often the set people end up talking about on the sidewalk. Six o'clock on the 31st, at an address that has not moved since 1964.

Before there was techno in Detroit there was electro in Los Angeles, and a good deal of it came out of one man, one drum machine, and a car full of speakers driving around South Central in 1983. Greg Broussard still performs with a Roland TR-808, live, on stage, programming it in front of you rather than pressing play on a laptop. He is one of the genuine architects of West Coast electro-funk — the sound that fed into Miami bass, into early hip-hop, into most of what came after — and he has been playing continuously for four decades without ever being fully absorbed into the mainstream that borrowed from him. A New Year's Eve show from an LA originator in a room on Fletcher Drive that actually cares about this history. Better than a countdown in a hotel ballroom. Eight at night on the thirty-first of December. Stay for midnight.

Mummers Parade 2027 — Philadelphia, PA
Jan 1, 2027 Broad Street at City Hall, 1400 Jo…

Every New Year's Day has the same shape: too quiet, slightly grey, a day you are supposed to spend recovering and reflecting. In one American city they decided a long time ago to do the opposite, and they have not stopped since. The Mummers Parade is the oldest continuous folk parade in the United States, running on Broad Street every January 1 since 1901, with roots going back further than that into Swedish, Finnish, English and African American traditions that collided in South Philadelphia and never separated. Thousands of marchers in feathered, sequined, hand-built costumes — String Bands, Comics, Fancy Brigades — move from City Hall south to Washington Avenue over the better part of a day. What outsiders never grasp is that this is not a civic event with volunteers. These are neighbourhood clubs, many of them family memberships going back four generations, who spend the entire year building costumes and rehearsing in clubhouses on Two Street. A String Band's suit can cost more than a car. People are born into this. Is it worth it? If you have any interest in what folk culture looks like when it survives industrialisation, television and gentrification without being sanitised, this is one of the few places in America to see it. It is long, it is cold, it is loud, parts of it are chaotic, and none of that is a flaw. If you want a polished ninety-minute parade with a clear start and finish, this is not that. What to know: it kicks off at 9 a.m. at City Hall and runs until roughly 7 p.m., so pick a stretch of Broad Street and a time rather than trying to see all of it. Grandstand tickets go on sale in November. Dress for standing still outdoors in January — locals treat it as an all-day commitment with layers and a plan for food. The real afterparty is on Two Street in South Philly, which is where people who actually know go once the official route winds down. It earns a place here because almost nothing else in the country is like it: a city that answers the emptiest day of the year with the loudest thing it has. January 1, 2027, Broad Street, Philadelphia.

Gray Whale Migration — Dana Point Whale Watching 2027
Jan 1 – Apr 15, 2027 Dana Point Harbor, 34671 Golden La…

Off the point, the horizon breathes. A spout, then a fluke, then another one further out, and the boat goes quiet the way a crowd only goes quiet when something enormous does something ordinary right in front of it. Gray whales run this coast from December into April, out of the Arctic feeding grounds down to the calving lagoons of Baja and back, a round trip of roughly 12,000 miles hugging the California shoreline in both directions. What makes this harbor the place to watch it is a deep-water canyon sitting just offshore, which pulls the animals close enough that midwinter sightings are close to a given. One operator runs a semi-submarine hull with windows below the waterline, so dolphins move underneath the boat instead of past it. Dana Point Harbor, trips of a few hours, warm layers no matter how mild the shore feels. Send it to the person who has always meant to do this and never has.

Jan 1, 2027 Colorado Blvd, Pasadena, CA 91101

People start sleeping on the sidewalk along Colorado Boulevard two days early, in folding chairs, under blankets, beside families who have held the same patch of curb for decades. That part never makes the broadcast, and it is the better half of the whole thing. Then the floats come. Every visible surface is organic — flowers, seeds, bark, leaves, vegetation pressed on by volunteers working through the night — which is why they look impossible up close and merely pretty on television. Marching bands from high schools and universities across the country. Equestrian units. Dozens of floats moving five and a half miles east through Old Town Pasadena on the first morning of the year. Grandstand seats go through the Tournament of Roses and sell out months ahead. Curbside is free, and the Metro runs on New Year's Day. Go stand on a cold curb with strangers before sunrise. It is the only way this city starts a year all at once.

The parade is the worst way to see the floats and everybody who lives here knows it. You stand in the cold at dawn, the thing you waited for rolls past at walking pace, and the detail work that took ten thousand volunteer hours reads as a blur of color. Afterward the floats get parked along two miles of Sierra Madre and Washington and you can walk right up to them. That is when the whole conceit lands: what looked like paint is thousands of individual crushed petals; what looked like fur is shredded bark; the lettering is rice and poppy seed. Builders stand near their floats and will absolutely tell you how the hydraulics work if you ask. The flowers are a day old by then and beginning to go, which sounds like a downside and is actually the best part — you are seeing something engineered to be perfect for exactly one morning, in the hours it is allowed to wilt. January 1 through 3, afternoons.

New Year's Day has a shape here it does not have anywhere else: floats down Colorado Boulevard in the morning, and by afternoon ninety thousand people in an open-air bowl that has stood on the same ground since 1923. Do both and the day becomes one continuous thing. The Granddaddy of Them All is the oldest bowl game in college football, and the open sky is the whole difference — no enclosed stadium reproduces a January afternoon in Pasadena with the mountains sitting behind the rim. Brookside Park fills with tailgates from early morning, and the RV lots are a tradition of their own among people who have been coming for decades. Take the Gold Line in on game day; it beats driving and skips the lots entirely. The matchup is not settled until the December championships, which is half the fun. Commit to the day before you know who is playing.

Pomona has a specific place in West Coast rap that gets flattened whenever anybody outside California tells the story, and the artist who most embodies it has spent thirty years refusing to leave. The delivery is the signature — a rapid, sing-song, conversational flow that nobody has successfully copied, over production from the man who defined that whole Inland Empire sound. Records from the late nineties still get played at parties out here as though they came out last year. Live he works a crowd like a comedian, and the audience is heavily local, heavily multigenerational. A Ventura room on the first Saturday of the new year. Music at 9:00 PM on East Thompson Boulevard. National Western Stock Show 2027 — Denver, CO
Jan 9, 2027 National Western Complex, 4655 Hum…

For sixteen days every January, Denver becomes the place where ranching is not an industry but a religion, and a hundred twenty thousand people show up because they already knew that. The National Western Stock Show is America's largest livestock exhibition — a sprawling, sixteen-day celebration of rodeo, livestock competition, and the culture that built the West, now in its 121st year. The arena holds championship rodeo every night with cowboys and cowgirls who have spent the entire year qualifying for this stage, riding broncs and roping calves in front of crowds that understand exactly what they are watching because half of them grew up doing it themselves. The exhibition halls hold cattle and horses bred by families who have been showing here for three and four generations, some of them driving their trailers through January snow from ranches so remote that Denver feels like Times Square. The food court holds things you cannot get anywhere else in the country this side of a county fair — lamb sliders from a rancher who knows the lamb's name, rattlesnake sausage, elk jerky, and a funnel cake the size of your head. And somewhere in the middle of all of it, a kid who has never touched a cow before reaches out and does, and that is the whole point. The kick-off parade winds through downtown Denver to open the show, horses clopping down 17th Street past office buildings, and by the time it reaches the Complex the streets already smell like hay and leather. The show is not a nostalgia act. It is a living industry gathering that also happens to be one of the best spectacles in American winter — livestock auctions where animals sell for six figures, a Mexican Rodeo Extravaganza, mutton bustin for kids too small to ride anything bigger, and a trade show where ranch technology meets the people who actually use it.
