Empire Polo Club, 81-800 Avenue 51…
Every April a specific kind of homesickness arrives for a place most people have never been. It comes through a phone: someone you half know, backlit orange, standing in a desert that looks nothing like wherever you are reading this. You are not envious of the lineup. You are envious of being the sort of person who goes.
That feeling deserves to be taken seriously, because it is most of what this festival actually sells and the part nobody admits to buying.
What happens in Indio is smaller and stranger than the highlight reel suggests. Two near-identical weekends at the Empire Polo Club, April 9 through 11 and then April 16 through 18, held on grass that is improbably, almost aggressively green for the middle of the Coachella Valley. Goldenvoice books it. The art installations are commissioned rather than decorative, which is why they photograph well and also why several of them are genuinely good. And the sets people are still describing to strangers four years later are almost never the headliners — they are some 4pm slot in a side tent where a couple thousand people found the same thing at the same moment and knew it while it was happening.
Is it worth the money? Honestly, yes, once, and not for the reason most people assume. It is worth it because the distance between the weekend you imagined and the weekend you actually got is the experience itself. Anyone who arrives expecting the phone version goes home disappointed and posts anyway. Anyone who arrives expecting three hot, dusty, overpriced, overwhelming days in the desert with roughly forty minutes of transcendence buried in the middle tends to come home converted. If you genuinely dislike crowds, do not go. No amount of planning solves a crowd this size.
The things veterans actually know: it will clear ninety degrees, and shade is the scarcest resource on the entire site — worth more than standing close to a stage. Phone theft is endemic rather than occasional, so a wrist strap or a zipped inner pocket is not paranoia. Food and drink run a hundred to two hundred dollars a day, so eat before you walk in. Car camping is a hundred forty-nine dollars and disappears the morning it opens; the shuttle pass is the best purchase most attendees make, because rideshare surge pricing in Indio is its own category of injury. And if you do camp, the entry queue has run twelve hours in bad years, in terrain with nowhere to hide. Bring a sleeping bag, a towel, and an EZ-Up. Every year, people forget all three.
General admission opened at five hundred ninety-nine dollars for the first weekend and sold out during the May advance sale; payment plans start at forty-nine dollars down. The lineup lands sometime between October and December, which means for now the whole thing is pure anticipation — which, if you have read this far, you had already worked out was the point.
Empire Polo Club, 81-800 Avenue 51. Most people reading this will never go and will still spend part of April there anyway. The same grass hosts a country festival the following weekend, for the people who want the dust without the cameras.

The desert in April has its own temperature — not hot yet, not cold, the kind of night where you can wear the same jacket for eight hours. Sabrina Carpenter closes the Coachella Stage with every light in the desert pointed at her, and forty thousand people are singing every word. This is what that feels like. Weekend 1: April 10-12 | Weekend 2: April 17-19 at the Empire Polo Club in Indio. Justin Bieber returns to a major stage for the first time in years. Karol G owns the Sahara. Art installations cover the grounds between sets. Tickets are sold out — resale via StubHub or SeatGeek. If you go for nothing else, go for the feeling that the whole world showed up to the same party.

17801 Lake Perris Dr, Perris, CA 9…
No giant GA crush, no stadium-stage corporate feel - the boutique scale here is intentional and jealously guarded, and that is precisely why a devoted following keeps coming back. Built as a deliberate alternative to the corporate festival circuit, this one has cultivated its people through curated programming in psychedelic rock, shoegaze, experimental indie, krautrock, and the full spectrum of sounds adjacent to those genres. The setting reinforces everything the festival was designed around: camping lakeside in the Inland Empire desert with mountain views, about an hour east of Los Angeles. Art installations, wellness programming, film screenings, and zine fairs share the grounds with the music stages, and lake access is part of the experience for camping ticket holders. General admission day passes typically go on sale first, with camping packages announced separately. Tickets move fast when lineups drop - sign up for the mailing list if you do not want to miss the on-sale window. Check desertdaze.org for lineup announcements, ticket availability, and camping options. Desert Daze 2026, at Lake Perris State Recreation Area in Riverside County.

920 Kline St, La Jolla, CA 92037
Once a month the light off the Pacific hits the gallery corridor at exactly the right hour, and everything hanging on those walls looks better than it has any right to.
The format is self-guided, which is the point — you pick the route, set the pace, and let whatever you are standing in front of decide how long you stay. Galleries pour wine and put out snacks. Thumbprint on Kline Street is the unofficial anchor, and if you only have an hour, start there and let it carry you.
More than 400 people turn out each month, which is enough to feel like a neighborhood showing up for itself and small enough that you will end up talking to a gallerist without planning to. The theme shifts month to month; the character does not.
First Friday of every month, 4 to 7 PM. 920 Kline St, La Jolla. Free, with evening street parking on most blocks.
Short enough to finish in an hour. Long enough to lose the whole evening to, if you let it.

Great Park, 8000 Great Park Blvd, …
Irvine has 96 spoken languages within city limits. One day a year, they all show up at the same park — and the result is the closest thing SoCal has to a world expo built by your actual neighbors.
The Irvine Global Village Festival celebrates its 25th anniversary on October 10 at Great Park, a free all-day celebration of the diversity that most cities claim and few actually embody. Cultural performances from dozens of nations fill the stages. International food vendors line the paths — Filipino lumpia next to Korean bibimbap next to Middle Eastern falafel next to Mexican street corn. Art installations, interactive booths, and community organizations turn the park into a living map of who actually lives in Orange County.
The festival runs from 10 AM to 6 PM. Free admission. Free parking. The food alone is worth the drive from anywhere in SoCal.
If you've ever wanted to eat four continents in the same afternoon while watching a lion dance, this is your day. Bring the whole family.

Downtown Long Beach, Long Beach, C…
On the second Saturday of October, Downtown Long Beach opens itself like a drawer. The DTLB Art + Design Walk sends galleries, studios, storefronts, and restaurants across the district into full exhibition mode — a single walkable evening where the working creative class invites the public into the places where the work gets made, not just displayed. You move from a ceramics studio on one block to a letterpress workshop on the next to a pop-up exhibition in a restaurant that usually just serves dinner. The participating businesses offer deals, the local makers sell directly, and the neighborhoods reveal themselves in a way that a regular Saturday afternoon does not. This is not a curated art fair with booth fees and velvet ropes. This is the actual ecosystem of Long Beach art — scrappy, layered, and unapologetically itself. Free. Walk, bike, or take the Blue Line. Saturday, October 11. Throughout Downtown Long Beach.

Bolsa Chica State Beach, Huntingto…
Flat track racing on the sand. Custom motorcycles gleaming in the Pacific sun. And a crowd that knows the difference between a tracker and a scrambler, even if most of them rode here in an SUV.
The Moto Beach Classic is a free, family-friendly motorsport festival on Bolsa Chica State Beach in Huntington Beach — organized by Roland Sands Design and built around the Super Hooligan TT flat track races. Beyond the racing: custom motorcycle displays, e-bike demos, stunt shows, art installations, vendors, food, and live entertainment. The whole thing runs 10 AM to 6:30 PM with the Pacific Ocean as the backdrop.
October 17, 2026. Bolsa Chica State Beach, Huntington Beach, CA. Free admission.
This is the event that makes people who don't ride motorcycles start thinking about riding motorcycles. That's the point.

Gaslamp Quarter, 5th Ave & G St, S…
You have walked these blocks a hundred times on the way to dinner and never once noticed the staircase between two storefronts, or the room at the top of it with somebody's paintings on the walls.
Last Saturday of the month, the doors that are normally shut get propped open. Galleries, boutiques, studios above street level, spaces you assumed were offices — all of it self-guided, so you set your own route and nobody herds you anywhere. Live music turns up at several stops. Artists stand next to their own work and will talk to you about it if you make eye contact, which is rarer downtown than it ought to be.
The Gaslamp on a warm evening already does half the work. The rest is free, and it bridges an afternoon into a night out better than any reservation.
Take the person you have been meaning to catch up with. You will end up talking more than looking, and that is fine.
