The second half of a hockey weekend has a texture the first half does not. Everybody in the building was somewhere else last night, the players are on the back end of consecutive games, and the whole thing runs slightly tired and slightly loose — which produces either a sloppy game or a wildly entertaining one, and rarely anything between. Calgary is the visitor, and the Flames travel with the kind of support that treats a November road trip to Southern California as a holiday: expect sunburn and replica jerseys in equal measure, bought for weather that does not exist in Alberta. The five o'clock start is kind to anyone who has to function on Monday. Calgary and Anaheim have also met in the playoffs often enough that the older fans in both sections carry specific grudges, which surfaces around the second period whether the standings justify it or not. Honda Center, Sunday the fifteenth, with the puck down at five and the 57 manageable in both directions on a weekend evening.

The 6:30 faceoff is the tell that somebody scheduled this one around Thanksgiving travel. It is the Wednesday before the holiday, half the county is at the airport or on the 5, and the people who choose a hockey game instead have made a quietly excellent decision — the roads around Katella are emptier than any other November night and the building has the relaxed feeling of a room where nobody has anywhere to be in the morning. San Jose is the opponent, which still carries an edge for anyone who remembers the 2009 playoff series, even though almost nobody on either roster was alive in the league for it. California hockey rivalries are stranger and more durable than outsiders assume. Bring somebody who thinks hockey is incomprehensible: a 6:30 start and a half-empty midweek building is the easiest possible first game, because you can actually follow the puck and hear the hits. Puck drops half an hour after six, the night before the night before Thanksgiving.

Sunday at five is the worst hour of the week. Late enough that the weekend is clearly over, early enough that there is still time to sit and feel bad about it. An afternoon-into-evening hockey game lands exactly in that hole and fills it. Winnipeg comes to Anaheim, and Jets fans are worth the ticket on their own — a small, loud, travelling contingent that shows up in white inside a building full of orange and makes itself heard every single time their team touches the puck. They are also the rare visiting support that knows every word of its own goal song, which is disorienting the first time you hear it in Orange County. The five o'clock start is the giveaway that this one is built for people who have somewhere to be Monday morning: you are out of Honda Center and onto Katella by half past seven, which is the whole difference between a good Sunday and a ruined Monday.

The six o'clock puck drop is the detail that tells you who this game is for. Most weeknight hockey starts at seven, which means anyone with a real commute eats dinner in the car and misses the first period entirely. An hour earlier changes the shape of the whole evening — you arrive in daylight, you are home before eleven, and the building fills properly instead of trickling in through the second period. The Ducks host Vancouver, a matchup that has gotten considerably more interesting as both rosters turned young and fast at the same time. Canucks supporters also travel in numbers that surprise anyone who has not been to one of these; a meaningful slice of the lower bowl will be in blue and green and will not be quiet about it. Bring a layer: the seats behind the benches at Honda Center run genuinely cold, which first-timers never believe until the second intermission. Doors well before the six o'clock faceoff on Wednesday the sixteenth.

The two days before Christmas are strange and empty in a way nobody plans for. Work has stopped mattering, the shopping is either done or it isn't, and there is a great deal of evening left to get through. This is the night to spend it on the one rivalry in the division that never needed decades of history to feel real. Vegas and Anaheim genuinely dislike each other, and the Golden Knights travel in numbers most road teams cannot manage, because half their support will drive anything under five hours to be in the room. A Vegas crowd in Orange County on a December Tuesday is loud enough to be irritating, which is exactly the point — the building finds an edge in late December that it never has in October, and the home crowd answers instead of watching politely. Seven o'clock at Honda Center on Katella, two nights before Christmas.

Rock music in a room the size of Honda Center operates at a different physics than it does in an arena — you feel the kick drum before you hear it. Charlie Puth: Whatever's Clever! World Tour performs at Honda Center in Anaheim on April 28, 2026. The people who were there will describe it differently than anyone who heard about it later — that difference is what the ticket buys.

Balboa Theatre, 868 Fourth Ave, Sa…
You have argued about this film. Everyone has. Somebody at some point told you the Keira Knightley cue-card scene is indefensible and somebody else cried at the airport montage in front of you, and the argument is now an annual fixture of your December whether you want it or not. What a live orchestra does to it is strange and worth reporting: the score stops being wallpaper. Craig Armstrong wrote something genuinely sad under all that Christmas, and when forty musicians play it in a room instead of through a laptop, the scenes people mock get very quiet and the ones people love get almost unbearable. The film runs complete and uncut on the screen above the players. The crowd laughs in the right places, loudly, because a cinema full of people who chose this is a different animal to a sofa. Go with the person you have the argument with. Balboa Theatre, downtown San Diego, a Sunday evening five days before Christmas, seven o'clock.

Los Angeles Convention Center, 120…
You will be tired in a way that feels earned. Four days, a hundred thousand people, and not one of them needs you to explain what you are talking about.
The largest anime convention in North America takes the Los Angeles Convention Center over Fourth of July weekend and spills into the JW Marriott and the Ritz-Carlton beside it. Industry panels, screening rooms, autograph sessions with voice actors and composers, concerts that sell out weeks ahead. Studios from Japan use this as their main North American announcement stage — if a sequel or adaptation is being revealed, it often happens in a room you could be standing in.
The exhibit hall carries imported merchandise and collaboration exclusives that surface nowhere else on the continent.
Los Angeles Convention Center, 1201 S Figueroa St. Thursday through Sunday. Badges run from top-tier early-access down to single-day passes.
Book the connected hotel corridor months out. Everyone who tells you that learned it the hard way.

Coast Hwy & Pier View Way, Oceansi…
The Pacific is a block away.
Every Thursday evening from 5 to 9 PM, the corner of Coast Highway and Pier View Way becomes the Oceanside Sunset Market — vendors, food, live music, and the light that only happens when you're that close to the water at that hour.
The beach-town market that runs when the day is actually good. Local makers, artisans, food vendors, and the crowd that comes out because the evening earned it.
The vendor mix is Oceanside-specific: local crafts, art, jewelry, produce, and the food vendors that the beach corridor supports. The live music stage runs throughout the evening. The Oceanside Pier is visible from the market — the setting does work the vendors don't have to.
Free to attend. Parking available near the Pier. Every Thursday, May through September, 5-9 PM. Oceanside, California. The market runs through marine layer some evenings. The cooler Pacific air is part of the draw, not a reason to stay home.

Bayard St and Garnet Ave, Pacific …
A hundred and fifty steps from the ocean, a corner of Pacific Beach turns into a block party that nobody had to organize you into.
Fire pits going. Nine to twelve food vendors rotating week to week, so the thing you loved last time might be gone and the thing replacing it might be better. Live music that is genuinely local — acoustic sets, small bands, the occasional DJ. Games. A crowd of PB locals and students and people who simply wandered up from the beach still holding a towel.
Past vendors have run birria tacos, banh mi, craft lemonade, Hawaiian shave ice, artisan pastries, small-batch hot sauces. A few craft sellers usually set up alongside.
This is a neighborhood gathering, not a ticketed event. Free. No RSVP. You walk up.

Crenshaw Blvd (Martin Luther King …
The smell reaches you before the stages do - barbecue and catfish and soul food covering a mile-plus of Crenshaw Boulevard, because every major Black-owned restaurant in South LA has a booth out here and the food is the center of the whole thing. For one Saturday in October, this stretch between Martin Luther King Jr. Boulevard and Leimert Park Village becomes one of the largest street festivals in Los Angeles.
More than 300,000 people move through in a single day. The format is street vendors, restaurant booths, live music stages, a car show, health screenings, and community organization presence - but it is the food and the crowd that make it. Founded by the Los Angeles Sentinel, the oldest Black-owned newspaper in California, it has run for over two decades and stayed a genuine community institution: multigenerational, neighborhood-rooted, and enormous. This is Leimert Park and Crenshaw at their fullest.
Free to attend. Crenshaw closes to traffic for the day. The Metro K Line stops at Leimert Park Village and is the easiest way in and out. Arrive early if you want to move - by noon the crowds are deep.

The market hosts live music from local musicians throughout the day. GLAM is free to attend and open to all ages. Shaded seating is available. The market runs 10 AM to 4 PM. Getting there: Located in the Gaslamp Quarter, easily accessible by trolley (Gaslamp Quarter station on the Blue and Orange line). Street parking and paid lots available on nearby blocks.
