Las Vegas Convention Center, 3150 …
More critical infrastructure vulnerabilities have been disclosed at DEF CON than anywhere else on earth. The conference where that happens — 34 editions in now — is held in Las Vegas every August and draws the largest gathering of security researchers, hackers, and engineers in the world. DEF CON is unlike any conference you've attended. Walk in and you'll find badge puzzle hunts that thousands of people spend the entire conference solving; lock-picking villages where anyone can learn to pick a padlock in minutes; talks that expose critical vulnerabilities in systems we trust daily — power grids, voting machines, medical devices, cars. The crowd is a mix of 20-year-old prodigies, retired intelligence professionals, and corporate security teams sitting in the same row. There is no dress code except the absence of one. The culture rewards curiosity over credentials. DEF CON has the energy of a music festival crossed with a graduate thesis defense — and the hallway conversations may be more valuable than either. If you've ever wondered how systems get broken — and how they get fixed — DEF CON is worth the trip to Las Vegas. This is for technologists, security professionals, students, and curious people who want to understand the infrastructure of modern life by learning its failure modes. It is not for people who need structured agendas and sponsored lanyards. DEF CON is self-organized, intentionally weird, and deliberately unwelcoming to corporate gatekeeping. If you've ever googled "how does that hack actually work" — you belong here. Register early — badge prices increase at the door and can exceed $400. Cash is preferred and sometimes required. The badges themselves are puzzles; experienced attendees spend all four days cracking them. Bring comfortable shoes — the Las Vegas Convention Center spans multiple halls. DEF CON runs four specialized villages simultaneously (Wireless, AI, Hardware, Social Engineering) and you will miss most of them. That's part of the culture: nobody sees everything. Bring a way to share contact information — the hallway conversations at DEF CON have launched more security careers than any job board. The mainstream technology industry spends billions on security theater. DEF CON spends four days showing you exactly how it fails — and then showing you how to fix it. If you've ever felt that the systems you rely on are more fragile than anyone admits, you're right. DEF CON is the room where people say so. Tickets and registration at defcon.org. August 6–9, 2026, Las Vegas Convention Center.

Electric Daisy Carnival is the largest electronic music festival in North America, held overnight at the Las Vegas Motor Speedway. For 2027 it expands to two consecutive weekends under a new structure — EDC Dusk on May 14 through 16 and EDC Dawn on May 21 through 23 — with a reduced daily capacity that regulars have wanted for years.
The defining fact is that it runs at night. Gates open in the evening and the grounds stay live until roughly 5:30 in the morning, which means the emotional arc of an EDC night is nothing like a daytime festival. The exhausted, euphoric hour around 4 AM, when the sky over the speedway starts going grey and the last main-stage sets are still running, is the thing people actually come back for. The kinetic sculptures, the carnival rides running all night, the enormous owl over the main stage — it is deliberately overwhelming, and the crowd participates rather than watches. Strangers trade handmade beaded bracelets, a practice that started organically and never got corporate.
Worth it? Honestly, it depends on whether you can sleep during the day in Las Vegas in May. That is the real filter, and people underestimate it badly. If you can, this is one of the genuinely singular experiences in American nightlife — a scale of production that no other festival on the continent attempts. If you cannot handle heat, crowds of 100,000, or being awake until sunrise for three consecutive nights, this will be a miserable and expensive weekend. There is no partial version of EDC.
What to know: the speedway is a long way from the Strip and the shuttle is the only sane option — rideshare surge at 5 AM with 100,000 people leaving at once is the classic first-timer mistake. Camp EDC exists specifically to solve the commute and sells out. Hydration is not advice, it is the entire strategy; the desert at night is cold and the daytime hotel room is hot, and people routinely misjudge both. Bring a portable battery, because cell service on the grounds is historically poor and finding your group without a phone is genuinely difficult.
EDC is on this list because it is the clearest example of an event that most people will never attend but that reorganizes how they imagine a night could go. The two-weekend expansion for 2027 is the first structural change in years, and it makes attending meaningfully easier than it has been.
EDC Dusk: May 14 through 16, 2027. Friday gates open at 5 PM for the opening ceremony; Saturday and Sunday gates at 7 PM, with the grounds running until 5:30 AM.

Los Angeles Convention Center, 120…
You will be tired in a way that feels earned. Four days, a hundred thousand people, and not one of them needs you to explain what you are talking about.
The largest anime convention in North America takes the Los Angeles Convention Center over Fourth of July weekend and spills into the JW Marriott and the Ritz-Carlton beside it. Industry panels, screening rooms, autograph sessions with voice actors and composers, concerts that sell out weeks ahead. Studios from Japan use this as their main North American announcement stage — if a sequel or adaptation is being revealed, it often happens in a room you could be standing in.
The exhibit hall carries imported merchandise and collaboration exclusives that surface nowhere else on the continent.
Los Angeles Convention Center, 1201 S Figueroa St. Thursday through Sunday. Badges run from top-tier early-access down to single-day passes.
Book the connected hotel corridor months out. Everyone who tells you that learned it the hard way.

Coast Hwy & Pier View Way, Oceansi…
The Pacific is a block away.
Every Thursday evening from 5 to 9 PM, the corner of Coast Highway and Pier View Way becomes the Oceanside Sunset Market — vendors, food, live music, and the light that only happens when you're that close to the water at that hour.
The beach-town market that runs when the day is actually good. Local makers, artisans, food vendors, and the crowd that comes out because the evening earned it.
The vendor mix is Oceanside-specific: local crafts, art, jewelry, produce, and the food vendors that the beach corridor supports. The live music stage runs throughout the evening. The Oceanside Pier is visible from the market — the setting does work the vendors don't have to.
Free to attend. Parking available near the Pier. Every Thursday, May through September, 5-9 PM. Oceanside, California. The market runs through marine layer some evenings. The cooler Pacific air is part of the draw, not a reason to stay home.

Bayard St and Garnet Ave, Pacific …
A hundred and fifty steps from the ocean, a corner of Pacific Beach turns into a block party that nobody had to organize you into.
Fire pits going. Nine to twelve food vendors rotating week to week, so the thing you loved last time might be gone and the thing replacing it might be better. Live music that is genuinely local — acoustic sets, small bands, the occasional DJ. Games. A crowd of PB locals and students and people who simply wandered up from the beach still holding a towel.
Past vendors have run birria tacos, banh mi, craft lemonade, Hawaiian shave ice, artisan pastries, small-batch hot sauces. A few craft sellers usually set up alongside.
This is a neighborhood gathering, not a ticketed event. Free. No RSVP. You walk up.

Crenshaw Blvd (Martin Luther King …
The smell reaches you before the stages do - barbecue and catfish and soul food covering a mile-plus of Crenshaw Boulevard, because every major Black-owned restaurant in South LA has a booth out here and the food is the center of the whole thing. For one Saturday in October, this stretch between Martin Luther King Jr. Boulevard and Leimert Park Village becomes one of the largest street festivals in Los Angeles.
More than 300,000 people move through in a single day. The format is street vendors, restaurant booths, live music stages, a car show, health screenings, and community organization presence - but it is the food and the crowd that make it. Founded by the Los Angeles Sentinel, the oldest Black-owned newspaper in California, it has run for over two decades and stayed a genuine community institution: multigenerational, neighborhood-rooted, and enormous. This is Leimert Park and Crenshaw at their fullest.
Free to attend. Crenshaw closes to traffic for the day. The Metro K Line stops at Leimert Park Village and is the easiest way in and out. Arrive early if you want to move - by noon the crowds are deep.

400-500 5th Ave, Gaslamp Quarter, …
Every Saturday and Sunday, the heart of San Diego historic Gaslamp Quarter transforms into an outdoor open-air artisan market. The Gaslamp Artisan Market -- known as GLAM -- runs the length of 5th Avenue between Market Street and J Street, with 70 local artisans showcasing handmade, one-of-a-kind goods. This is where San Diego independent makers set up shop: handcrafted jewelry, original paintings, ceramics, leather goods, woven textiles, hand-poured candles, botanical skincare, and prints from local artists who live and work in this city every day. The market hosts live music from local musicians throughout the day. GLAM is free to attend and open to all ages. Shaded seating is available. The market runs 10 AM to 4 PM. Getting there: Located in the Gaslamp Quarter, easily accessible by trolley (Gaslamp Quarter station on the Blue and Orange line). Street parking and paid lots available on nearby blocks.
