The Observatory North Park, 2891 U…
Two guys, a bass, and a drum kit, producing more sonic violence than most bands manage with six people — that has always been the miracle and the joke of this band at the same time.
It is dance music for people who want to break something. Punk swagger welded to a groove you cannot physically stand still through, and played live it stops being a genre and becomes an event happening to your body. Expect a pit. Expect the low end parked in your chest for the whole set. Expect to sound like a different person in the morning.
The Observatory in North Park is built for exactly this: a room made for sweaty, ears-ringing communion, all ages, doors at 7 and music at 8.
This is the show you go to when you need to shake something loose. Afterward you stand outside with strangers who feel exactly as alive as you do, and nobody wants to be the first to leave.

The lights go down and something impossible happens in front of your face and for a second you are seven years old again. That is what Hokus Pokus Live does — it finds the part of you that still believes in things you cannot explain and gives it permission to come out.
This is not a birthday party magician. Hokus Pokus Live is a full-production stage show that blends illusion, comedy, and spectacle into something that works on adults the way Cirque du Soleil works on adults — you know it is not real, but your body does not care. The acts rotate so even if you saw it last year, this is a different show. All ages, which means the energy in the room is half screaming kids and half adults trying to act like they are not screaming too.
Monday, October 12, 2026. The Observatory North Park. Doors at 7 PM, show at 8 PM. Tickets from $70 on Ticketmaster. This is a Monday night out that earns its keep.

Somewhere a teenager made a song in their bedroom that sounds like the inside of a phone at 3am — blown-out, autotuned, too fast, too much feeling crammed into two minutes — and it turned out a whole generation felt exactly that way. glaive is the sharp end of hyperpop, the sound of kids who grew up online and decided to make their heartbreak as loud and glitchy as the world that raised them. Live, it is chaos in the best sense: a young crowd that knows every word screaming into the strobes, catharsis with a broken pixel around the edges. Tiffany Day and Kurtains open. If you are old enough to find it disorienting, that is kind of the point; if you are young enough to feel seen by it, you already have your ticket. Sunday, October 18, 2026, doors 6:30pm, show 7:30pm, Observatory North Park, all ages. Come hear what the future sounds like when it is having a feeling.

Being twenty-two and a disaster - broke, in love with the wrong person, calling your friends at 2am, laughing so you do not cry - finally has its own soundtrack. Mom Jeans makes the kind of twinkly, gut-spilling emo that turns your worst week into a singalong, songs about being a mess that somehow make you feel held instead of judged. Their crowd is all arms-around-shoulders and voices cracking on the big line, a room full of people who found this band exactly when they needed proof they were not the only ones falling apart. The Observatory North Park gets sweaty and cathartic and kind. Friday, October 30, 2026, doors 6:30pm, show 7:30pm, North Park, all ages. Come scream the sad parts with a few hundred people who get it, and leave feeling weirdly, genuinely okay. Bring the friend who talked you off a ledge sophomore year, or the one you wish you had called — either way, this is the room where being a wreck turns into being together.

Some music is not meant to be listened to so much as disappeared into. The Black Angels build slow, droning cathedrals of reverb and tremolo — psychedelia with a dark heart, the sound of Texas heat and bad dreams and a fuzz pedal held down forever — and live it becomes a kind of collective trance, the whole room swaying under oil-projection light until time gets a little soft. This is the band at the center of the modern psych revival, the ones who started a festival to gather the whole tribe, and their shows still feel like a ceremony for people who prefer their transcendence a little sinister. Ghostwoman opens the fog. Sunday, November 1, 2026, doors 7pm, show 8pm, Observatory North Park, all ages. Come let a wall of sound wash your week off you, and float there awhile with a few hundred strangers doing the same. Go alone if you have to — this is a room where being alone in a crowd is the entire point.

You know that feeling when the whole room is moving and nobody rehearsed it — when the bass line picks up and two hundred strangers decide at exactly the same moment that tonight is the night they stop being careful. Medium Build makes music for that moment. Nick Carpenter built this project in a garage in Boise and turned it into something that fills rooms coast to coast with people who never heard the word 'indie-folk' and don't care. The live show is a sweaty, theatrical, grinning mess — brass instruments nobody expected, singalongs nobody planned, and a drummer who looks like he's having more fun than anyone in the building. The Scratch opens. Monday nights at the Observatory have a different energy than the weekend — smaller crowd, louder per capita, everyone there on purpose. If you've never heard either act, that's the point. This is the kind of Monday night that makes Tuesday morning feel like a badge of honor.

Somewhere in your phone there's a playlist you made at sixteen that you haven't touched since, and every Pxndx song on it still hits exactly the way it did the first time. Jose Madero was the frontman of that band — the Mexican emo act that soundtracked a generation of afternoons spent pretending to do homework — and his solo work carries the same bruised honesty but with cleaner hands. He writes like someone dictating a letter they'll never send. In San Diego, where the border is not a metaphor but a twenty-minute drive, his audience is the kids who grew up on both sides — code-switching between Spotify playlists the way they code-switch between languages. The Observatory in North Park will be loud in two languages and nobody will need subtitles. Tickets start around fifty dollars on Ticketmaster.

Some bands write songs; this one wrote a manifesto and then spent thirty years living inside it. The Manic Street Preachers came out of a dying Welsh mining town with more rage, eyeliner, and paperbacks than anyone knew what to do with, lost a member to a mystery that still aches, and somehow turned all of it into the most improbable thing — huge, soaring anthems for the defeated. When a whole room lifts on the chorus of A Design for Life, it does not feel like nostalgia; it feels like a working-class hymn being sung by people who still need it. These are literate, furious, gorgeous songs about class and grief and stubborn hope, played by survivors who mean every word. The Observatory North Park is the perfect scale for that intimacy and that force. Thursday, November 19, 2026, doors 7pm, show 8pm, North Park, all ages. Come sing the anthem for everyone who was told to expect less, and feel it land like it was written for you.

You found her when the algorithm finally got something right. Three songs deep into a playlist you didn't ask for, 'Glue Song' started playing and something in your chest remembered being seventeen and knowing exactly how the world felt.
beabadoobee brings The Powerlines Tour to the Kia Forum on October 21, with Wisp opening. This is indie rock with shoegaze DNA and bedroom-pop honesty — the sound of someone recording into a laptop at midnight who somehow ended up filling arenas because the feeling was that specific and that universal. Her fourth album Pylon drops this fall, and the live show is where the songs get louder, messier, and more real than the recordings.
All ages. Show at 8 PM. Tickets from $77 on Ticketmaster. Ticket limit of 6 per person.

Los Angeles Convention Center, 120…
You will be tired in a way that feels earned. Four days, a hundred thousand people, and not one of them needs you to explain what you are talking about.
The largest anime convention in North America takes the Los Angeles Convention Center over Fourth of July weekend and spills into the JW Marriott and the Ritz-Carlton beside it. Industry panels, screening rooms, autograph sessions with voice actors and composers, concerts that sell out weeks ahead. Studios from Japan use this as their main North American announcement stage — if a sequel or adaptation is being revealed, it often happens in a room you could be standing in.
The exhibit hall carries imported merchandise and collaboration exclusives that surface nowhere else on the continent.
Los Angeles Convention Center, 1201 S Figueroa St. Thursday through Sunday. Badges run from top-tier early-access down to single-day passes.

Bayard St and Garnet Ave, Pacific …
A hundred and fifty steps from the ocean, a corner of Pacific Beach turns into a block party that nobody had to organize you into.
Fire pits going. Nine to twelve food vendors rotating week to week, so the thing you loved last time might be gone and the thing replacing it might be better. Live music that is genuinely local — acoustic sets, small bands, the occasional DJ. Games. A crowd of PB locals and students and people who simply wandered up from the beach still holding a towel.
Past vendors have run birria tacos, banh mi, craft lemonade, Hawaiian shave ice, artisan pastries, small-batch hot sauces. A few craft sellers usually set up alongside.
This is a neighborhood gathering, not a ticketed event. Free. No RSVP. You walk up.

Crenshaw Blvd (Martin Luther King …
The smell reaches you before the stages do - barbecue and catfish and soul food covering a mile-plus of Crenshaw Boulevard, because every major Black-owned restaurant in South LA has a booth out here and the food is the center of the whole thing. For one Saturday in October, this stretch between Martin Luther King Jr. Boulevard and Leimert Park Village becomes one of the largest street festivals in Los Angeles.
More than 300,000 people move through in a single day. The format is street vendors, restaurant booths, live music stages, a car show, health screenings, and community organization presence - but it is the food and the crowd that make it. Founded by the Los Angeles Sentinel, the oldest Black-owned newspaper in California, it has run for over two decades and stayed a genuine community institution: multigenerational, neighborhood-rooted, and enormous. This is Leimert Park and Crenshaw at their fullest.
Free to attend. Crenshaw closes to traffic for the day. The Metro K Line stops at Leimert Park Village and is the easiest way in and out. Arrive early if you want to move - by noon the crowds are deep.

Pioneer Boulevard shuts down, and for one day the biggest Little India in Southern California becomes the biggest Diwali party west of the Mississippi.
The Artesia Diwali Mela takes over seven blocks of Pioneer Boulevard — from 183rd Street to 188th Street — with a main stage of Indian music and dance performances, dozens of food vendors serving everything from chaat to biryani to fresh jalebi, cultural booths, merchants with jewelry and textiles, and a street-level energy that makes Diwali feel like exactly what it is: the festival of lights brought to life in a California parking lane.
Sunday, November 10, 2026, 11 AM to 10 PM. Pioneer Boulevard, Artesia, CA. Free admission.
If you know someone who grew up celebrating Diwali and hasn't been to this yet, send them this. If you didn't grow up celebrating Diwali and want to understand why a billion people do — come find out.
