KAYOU Walls of Fandom — SDCC 2026 at Petco Park
Jul 23 – Jul 26, 2026 Petco Park Interactive Zone, 100 P…

The walls are ten feet tall and covered in trading card art you have been staring at on your phone screen for months — except now the colors are the size of your entire body and you are standing inside the frame. KAYOU makes its San Diego Comic-Con debut in 2026 with the Walls of Fandom, a free immersive walkthrough experience at the Interactive Zone at Petco Park. This is KAYOU's first convention appearance, and they brought everything: larger-than-life installations inspired by their trading card lines spanning Naruto, My Little Pony, Demon Slayer, and K-pop collectibles. The experience is a love letter to the artwork behind the cards — the craftsmanship that usually lives behind a plastic sleeve, blown up to a scale where you can finally see the brushstrokes. Beyond the walls: on-site card purchasing, a fan meetup at Tito Rick's Garage (2918 Imperial Ave) on Friday July 24 from 5-9pm with trading sessions and casual My Little Pony TCG play, and the SDCC-exclusive Superfan Passport — collect stamps across KAYOU's three locations and unlock rewards. July 23-26, 10am-5pm daily (Sunday until 4pm). Free admission, no badge required.

New York Comic Con 2026 — New York, NY
Today · Oct 8 – Oct 11 From $45 (1-day) Jacob K. Javits Convention Center,…

The Javits Center in October, a hundred thousand people in four days, every niche of pop culture in one building — and the streets of Hell's Kitchen turning into something you've never seen on a regular Tuesday. The Javits Center fills with a programmatic density that rewards strategic planning. Main stage panels feature talent from the year's biggest genre properties. The show floor covers hundreds of thousands of square feet of publishers, studios, collectibles vendors, and artist booths. Artist Alley at NYCC skews heavily toward comics — the original fanbase — alongside anime, gaming, and TV, giving it a different character than conventions that have shifted more entirely toward film and streaming. The autograph and photo op schedule is extensive; tickets for specific sessions go on sale in advance and sell out. New York Comic Con in 2026 is celebrating twenty years, and the Coney Island theme suggests organizers are going big on identity and atmosphere. The anniversary edition will likely bring programming and exclusives designed for the occasion. If you have been considering NYCC as a destination event, this is the year to go. The East Coast advantage: NYCC is adjacent to one of the world's great cities. The convention ends at 7pm and New York starts. Restaurants, bars, and attractions are all accessible from the Javits Center. Hotel inventory near the venue is limited; book early and consider Hudson Yards or Hell's Kitchen options within walking distance. Tickets go on sale in June with a Superfan Presale for Popverse members opening before general on-sale. Javits Center, New York City. October 8–11, 2026. New York Comic Con was founded in 2006 and reached 250,000 attendance within its first decade. The 20th anniversary edition in 2026 with the Coney Island theme signals that the organizers are treating this as a milestone year — expect expanded programming, anniversary exclusives, and a level of production that reflects two decades of iteration. If you have been waiting for the right year to make NYCC a destination trip, the 20th anniversary is the obvious choice.

Hobby Night at Odyssey Games — Pasadena (Warhammer & Miniatures)
Every Thursday · Next Oct 8 1795 E Colorado Blvd, Pasadena, CA…

There's a specific relief in a room with lighting good enough for detail work and a table you don't have to fold up at the end of the night -- somewhere your army can just live for a few hours. Odyssey Games in Pasadena runs Thursday hobby nights for miniature wargamers, model painters, and Warhammer 40K players who want exactly that. The format is intentionally social: players set up terrain for casual games or spread their models out to paint, Warhammer 40K leading but other systems welcome, the crowd a mix of competitive players testing list builds and hobbyists at every stage of the painting queue. The store stocks paints, brushes, primers, and Warhammer product, which solves realizing mid-session you're out of the one color you need. Bring the friend whose backlog rivals yours. Pasadena's Warhammer scene is active enough that finding a casual game on a Thursday is reliable -- no Discord coordination required. Open 10 AM to 11 PM; the community gathers from 6 PM Thursdays. Free entry.

Critical Hit Games — Weekly Pokemon TCG Tournament (Corona)
Every Saturday · Next Oct 10 10.0 1003 W. 6th Street, Corona, CA 928…

You have been tuning a deck in your head for months with no honest way to find out whether it holds up. Your friends are too kind. Ladder is too anonymous. What you need is a room. This is the unglamorous middle layer nobody puts on a highlight reel — where a player crosses from kitchen-table casual to tournament-ready. Swiss rounds, entry covering prize support, the same regulars every week plus whoever wandered in holding a binder. Between rounds you will watch cards change hands, decks get taken apart on a table, somebody patiently explaining why a tech choice is correct to the person who just lost to it. Serious enough to matter, loose enough to stay fun, and the experienced players here genuinely want more bodies in the format rather than fewer. The ones who grind here turn up at regionals. Saturdays in Corona. Bring the deck, the sleeves, and ten dollars. Send this to the friend who keeps saying they'll go competitive next year.

The Living Tombstone — SOMA, San Diego

If you know The Living Tombstone from the internet — and statistically, you do, because Yoav Landau's tracks have been streamed a billion times across YouTube and Spotify without most people knowing his name — then you already know the sound. Electronic, rock, and chiptune fused into something that lives in the space between video game soundtracks and proper dance music, made by someone who built a career writing songs about Five Nights at Freddy's and then kept leveling up until the music outgrew the meme. The SOMA show brings Landau's project to a venue that fits the vibe — standing room, all ages, the kind of crowd that discovered this music through gaming communities and fan-made animations and now gets to hear it through speakers that weigh more than they do. The live show translates the production in a way the bedroom headphone experience can't — bass you feel, drops timed to lighting rigs, the communal energy of a room full of people who found the same strange corner of the internet. Saturday, October 10, 2026 at 8:00 PM. SOMA, 3350 Sports Arena Blvd, San Diego, CA 92110. All ages. General admission.

You do not need a group, a character, or any idea what you are doing. That is the entire design. Drop in on a Thursday evening, pick up a pregenerated character sheet, and join a table — mid-campaign or at the start of something fresh. Dungeon Masters are provided. Dice are provided. Rules questions are not tolerated so much as encouraged. Tables sort by Tier, so a first-time player rolling their first d20 sits with other new characters instead of getting lost behind a party three levels deep. If you already have a D&D Beyond character in Adventurers League legal format, bring it — after tonight it is recognized at any AL table anywhere in the world, which is the quietly remarkable part of organized play. Game Empire SD, 5037 Shawline St, San Diego — a dedicated tabletop store with real event space and staff who know the rules. Parking on-site. Most sessions need no reservation; check the store calendar. The only bad session is the one you did not show up for.

Three coats of candy apple, a hundred hours of pinstriping, and a trunk of hydraulics your dad helped you wire when you were sixteen. Nobody paid you for any of it. Nobody asked you to. You did it because the car is how you sign your name. This is not a concours show with velvet rope and judging criteria written by people who have never turned a wrench. The builder stands next to the build, and the story behind it runs as detailed as the paint. Lowriders, hot rods, classics, trucks, and bikes lined up with San Diego Bay behind them and the Coronado Bridge framing every photograph anybody takes. Somewhere in that crowd is a fourteen-year-old watching a '64 Impala lay frame for the first time and having the most important automotive moment of their life. Music, food, vendors, nothing at the gate. Bring the person who taught you what a good line looks like. They will not stop talking. Let them.

Green and white in the arroyo is still a sight that scrambles the brain a little — Michigan State, a proud Big Ten blue-collar program, three time zones from home, playing a late-October game in a stadium ringed by palm trees and mountains. That surreal collision is exactly why the new era of West Coast college football is worth seeing in person: matchups that used to only exist in bowl games or video games, now happening on a random autumn Saturday at the Rose Bowl. The Bruins get another heavyweight, the crowd gets another only-in-Pasadena spectacle, and the whole thing unfolds in the golden California light that makes Midwestern visitors a little jealous. Saturday, October 24, 2026, Rose Bowl, Pasadena. Claim a tailgate spot in the shadow of the San Gabriels, walk the historic concourse, and come watch two very different football cultures meet in the grand old bowl on a perfect fall afternoon.

Your chest hears them before your ears do. A sound comes in off the water, every conversation on the Embarcadero stops mid-sentence, and a few thousand heads tilt back at the same moment. This is the week the Blue Angels belong to San Diego Bay, flying low enough that the downtown skyline becomes their backdrop. What visitors miss is the quieter half. You can walk aboard Navy destroyers, submarines, and amphibious ships free of charge, up the gangway and into the passageways where somebody's kid stands on deployment. The Parade of Ships moves through the bay, the bands play, and the city says out loud that the Navy is its largest employer. This is not a show San Diego hosts. It is San Diego looking at itself. Free, family-friendly, on the Broadway Pier and Embarcadero in October, and the trolley beats parking on air show day. Bring the person who has never stood underneath one of those passes.

Nothing kills a board game night faster than a table you have to clear before you finish. Which is the whole reason this one lives in a mead taproom with long communal benches, where a rulebook, a map, four expansions and everybody's drink can stay spread across the wood and no one comes to move you along. There is no tournament, no scheduled game, no entry beyond walking in. Regulars bring things out of their own collections and teach them to strangers. Somebody sets up in a corner with brushes and a half-painted miniature between turns. The staff run the room knowing a three-hour session is the expected use case rather than an inconvenience, and the mead rotates often enough to become its own side quest. Monthly, evenings, twenty-one and up, with food from the kitchen and whatever truck is parked outside. Bring the friend who owns the enormous box nobody will ever agree to learn.

MagicCon: Atlanta 2026 — Atlanta, GA
Nov 13 – Nov 15, 2026 Georgia World Congress Center, Bui…

Wizards of the Coast brings the official Magic: The Gathering convention to Atlanta — three days of competitive play, exclusive reveals, and side events that don't exist at a local game store. Step into MagicCon and the scale of the Magic ecosystem becomes visceral. The main hall hosts commander pods running nonstop, side event drafts firing every 90 minutes, and a merchandise floor stocked with exclusive foil treatments and collector editions that do not exist outside the convention walls. The World Championship stage draws a live audience who understands the stakes — watching a pro player navigate a complex board state in a top-8 match is legitimately thrilling even to non-competitive attendees. Panel stages feature lead designers previewing the upcoming set, Reality Fracture, with reveals that ripple across the entire community within minutes of announcement. Meet-and-greets with pro players and content creators run throughout the weekend, though they fill fast. The atmosphere skews intensely knowledgeable — this crowd knows what a Rhystic Study is, why it is obnoxious, and will argue about it with warmth. MagicCon Atlanta is for anyone who plays Magic with genuine investment — not necessarily competitive, but committed. If your Friday nights involve a Commander pod and you have at least one deck you have been tuning for six months, you will feel completely at home here. This is not a casual spectator event. It is for the player who loves the game enough to fly across the country for three days of it. First-timers to MagicCon frequently say the same thing: they had no idea how large and how skilled the community actually is until they walked in. Register for ticketed play events before the convention — sealed and draft pods sell out weeks in advance. Bring your trade binder if you have one: the secondary market area moves fast and has genuine deals. Badge merchandise must be picked up onsite; if you miss the pickup window before close on Sunday, you forfeit it. The Worlds stage is open to badge holders but seating near the feature match area is first-come, standing room fills by round 4 of the top 8. Bring cash for artist alley — many illustrators are cash-only and the original card alters available from top artists are some of the most collectible items in the room. For the Magic community, this is not just an event. It is the proof that the game is still alive, still evolving, and still worth every dollar you have spent on it. MagicCon: Atlanta 2026 runs November 13-15 at the Georgia World Congress Center, Atlanta. The same players turn up at regional opens and prereleases the rest of the year; this is the weekend the whole scene is in one building.

DragonForce: Inhuman Rampage 20th Anniversary
Nov 13, 2026 $45+ The Observatory North Park, 2891 U…

It should be embarrassing and it is somehow the opposite: guitars played so absurdly fast they sound like a video game glitching, songs about dragons and glory delivered with the straightest face in metal, and a crowd losing its collective mind with total sincerity. DragonForce built a temple to maximalism, and twenty years after Inhuman Rampage put Through the Fire and Flames into a million living rooms via Guitar Hero, they are playing the whole thing loud enough to melt the paint off the Observatory. Ensiferum and Rhapsody of Fire open, because if you are going to do power metal you do not do it halfway. This is joy without irony, a room full of people who decided that the most ridiculous thing is also the most fun. Friday, November 13, 2026, doors 6:30pm, show 7:30pm, North Park. Throw the horns without a shred of shame — everyone here already agreed this rules. Bring the friend you used to fail Through the Fire and Flames with on expert, and finally hear it played by people who somehow can.

Anime Weekend Atlanta 2026 — Atlanta, GA
Nov 19 – Nov 22, 2026 Georgia World Congress Center, Bui…

The American South's longest-running anime convention has been meeting in Atlanta every September since 1997. Anime Weekend Atlanta is where the Southeast's anime fandom comes to recognize itself. Walk the AWA floor on a Thursday night and the energy hits immediately: cosplayers in elaborate handmade builds line the escalators, artist alley tables overflow with original prints and fan art, and the programming halls pulse with AMVs, panel debates, and late-night gaming tournaments that run until 3 AM. The dealers room is legitimately staggering — vintage merchandise, imports, rare figures, and indie creators all packed into a space where you could spend a full day and still miss things. The masquerade on Saturday night is one of the most theatrical cosplay competitions in the country, drawing contestants who have spent months on a single build. AWA moves differently than the mega-cons: it feels less like a trade show and more like a reunion — because for thousands of attendees, it genuinely is. If you grew up watching anime in the South and never found your people, AWA is the answer. This is not for casual fans who think anime is just Naruto and Dragon Ball. It is for people who obsess over seasonal charts, debate subculture lore, and have a hard drive full of unfinished cosplay plans. First-timers frequently describe AWA as the con that finally felt like home. If you are that person — the one who learned Japanese from subtitles and named a pet after a character — this is worth every flight mile. Book your hotel at the World Congress Center Marriott before August or it will sell out — AWA attendees treat the hotel block as sacred and it fills months in advance. Badge pickup lines on Thursday afternoon are brutal; opt for pre-registration and arrive before noon. The dealers room has no ATMs inside — bring cash, bring more than you think you need, and budget for at least one impulse figure you did not plan for. The programming schedule releases about six weeks before the event and fills fast; panel rooms cap out, so plan your must-see events 30 minutes early. The loading dock area outside Building C is where the best spontaneous cosplay photo shoots happen after dark. It is the convention that proved the South has always had its own thriving fan culture — it just needed a room big enough to hold it. AWA 2026 runs November 19-22 at the Georgia World Congress Center, Building C, Atlanta. The Southern con circuit keeps going the rest of the year in far smaller hotels, and the same people build costumes for all of it.

Bear Ghost – Tiny Hitman Tour 2026
Oct 25, 2026 Lodge Room, 104 N Avenue 56, Los A…

Theatrical rock made by people who are obviously having a wonderful time is deeply unfashionable and completely undefeatable in a live room. This Arizona band writes songs with narrative arcs, key changes that should not work, and a horn part when a horn part is funny — the sort of thing that finds its audience through video games, animation communities, and the general internet rather than through radio. Their crowd is young, extremely online, and knows the words to material that never charted anywhere. Expect the room to handle whole sections unprompted. Sunday evening in an upstairs Masonic hall in Highland Park, wood floors, no seats. Music at 7:00 PM at 104 N Avenue 56. Fandoms built in Discord servers and comment sections are the ones most likely to turn a normal concert into something closer to a convention, and that is the atmosphere here.

San Diego Bay Parade of Lights 2026

For two evenings in December the water itself becomes the light show. Boats of every size — kayaks up to yachts — move in slow procession out from Shelter Island, through the harbor, toward the Embarcadero, while more than a hundred thousand people find a patch of shoreline to watch them pass. It has been happening since 1971, and the crews take it seriously: weeks of rigging, inflatable displays, themed structures built to win a judged category against neighbors they will see all year. Because the route runs the length of the bay, half the waterfront is a good seat. Free viewing along Shelter Island Shoreline Park, Harbor Island and the Embarcadero fills early, so come well before the start with blankets and something hot. Two Sunday evenings, both of them worth it. Take the kid who still believes, and the adult who forgot they used to.

A hundred and twenty local makers set up on the pier and sell things they made with their hands: ceramics, jewelry, candles that smell like an actual memory instead of a marketing brief, prints by artists whose studios are ten miles from your house. One Piece Card Game: Pirates Party — Los Angeles
Jun 20, 2026 Entry fee required; varies by event TBD — Greater Los Angeles Area, CA

The One Piece Card Game Pirates Party 2026 regional event lands in the greater Los Angeles area — and the timing could not be more deliberate. With ONE PIECE Fest set for COSM LA in August, the TCG scene is reaching crystallization phase in SoCal: the anime is at peak cultural moment, the card game is in its most competitive window, and the regional tournament format brings competitive players face to face with the community that texts each other about pulls at 11pm. Pirates Party is Bandai Namco's signature regional event format: competitive main events, side tournaments, exclusive promo card distribution, community meetups, and the kind of trading floor energy that doesn't happen on Discord. SoCal has one of the most active One Piece Card Game communities in North America — the competitive circuit here runs through multiple stores in LA, Orange County, and San Diego year-round. Whether you are grinding ranked play or showing up to trade and watch, this is the room where the SoCal One Piece TCG community will be in May-June 2026. Registration through the official One Piece Card Game website. Exact venue to be announced — follow the official channels for confirmation. Promo cards distributed to all registered participants. MomoCon 2027 — Atlanta, GA
May 27, 2027 Georgia World Congress Center, 285…

A convention that started as a one-day free event on a college campus and grew into a four-day gathering of tens of thousands keeps something from that origin that money cannot buy: it is still noticeably run by people who are the audience. MomoCon happens each Memorial Day weekend at the Georgia World Congress Center in downtown Atlanta, and it covers anime, gaming, animation and comics with an unusually strong emphasis on the industry side of animation. The distinguishing feature is the volume of actual working professionals — animators, voice actors, studio staff — doing panels that are about how the work gets made rather than about promoting a release. Atlanta has become a genuine production city, and the convention benefits from that proximity. Alongside it sits one of the larger convention gaming setups in the country: a tabletop hall, a big freeplay arcade and console area, and esports tournaments running the whole weekend. Cosplay is central and the crowd skews young, energetic and heavily costumed. Memorial Day weekend means an extra day, and the extra day changes the pace considerably — there is time to do things properly rather than sprinting. Worth it? If you are interested in animation as a craft and a career, this is one of the best conventions in the country for that specific reason, and the access to working professionals is unusually good. If you are primarily a collector, the dealer hall is solid but not a destination. It is a maker's and a player's convention more than a buyer's. What to know: downtown Atlanta hotels connected to or near the convention center fill first and the walk matters in May humidity. The badge covers the gaming halls, which many first-timers do not realize until Sunday. Panels about breaking into animation fill up an hour early. Parking downtown is expensive; the MARTA station is close. And the four-day format means Thursday is genuinely worth arriving for. It is here because a convention where the people who make the thing talk honestly about making it is rarer than it should be, and knowing that room exists is useful whether or not you ever sit in it. MomoCon 2027 runs May 27–30, 2027 at the Georgia World Congress Center.

Gen Con 2027 — Indianapolis, IN
Aug 5, 2027 Indiana Convention Center, 100 S C…

On a shelf in your house sit the games that only come out when the right people are in town, and the right people are almost never in town. That is the quiet arithmetic of being into this: the hobby is built for a full table and adult life keeps handing you three chairs and a Tuesday. For four days every August, one American city solves that completely, and the solution is so total it reorganizes how people think about the rest of their year. Running since 1968 and held in downtown Indianapolis since 2003, Gen Con has grown into the oldest and largest tabletop gaming convention in North America. It takes over the Indiana Convention Center, spills into Lucas Oil Stadium, and fills the connected hotels until the skywalks over the street are moving crowds at two in the morning. Roughly seventy thousand people come. It is the closest thing the hobby has to a homecoming. What it actually feels like is a city that has agreed, briefly and completely, to be about one thing. You walk into a hall the size of an airport terminal and every table in it has strangers sitting at it playing something. Open gaming runs essentially around the clock, which is the part that surprises first-timers most — at three in the morning there are still hundreds of people awake and mid-game, and joining a table requires nothing but asking. Designers demo their own unreleased games personally. The line you are standing in becomes a game. People who have played together online for nine years meet in person for the first time and it is visibly emotional. Is it worth it? If you have ever felt the specific frustration of loving something that requires other people to enjoy, yes, and it is not close. This is not a spectator convention where you look at things behind glass — you sit down and you play, constantly, for four days. It is not for someone looking for a relaxed vacation; it is loud, enormous, and physically demanding, and you will walk more than you expect. It is for the person who wants to be surrounded. What veterans know: the Exhibit Hall opens at 10 AM Thursday and the first hour is genuine chaos, because the new releases that everyone came for have limited print runs and the popular ones are gone before noon. Buy event tickets the moment registration opens; the good sessions sell out in minutes. Book a hotel on the skywalk system and thank yourself later. Gen Con 2027 runs August 5 through 8 at the Indiana Convention Center. The rest of the year, the same people are findable in a hundred smaller rooms.

Ready Party One: The Final Level
Jul 22 – Jul 23, 2026 $30–$75 615 Broadway, San Diego, CA 92101

Someone decided years ago that the night before the badges go live shouldn't be spent packing a bag in a hotel room. They believed the people who fly in early — the cosplayers, the arcade diehards, the friends who only see each other once a year on this one downtown block — needed a room of their own before the show floor ever opened. So they built one, and they've rebuilt it every summer since 2018. This year it's a neon-lit digital battlefield: arcade legends and fighting-game champions, console warriors, the golden age of gaming rendered in light and bass. There's an 80s tribute band that has been part of this since the beginning, a 90s band, DJs scratching records, and a few thousand people who all got the same text from the same friend that said "this is us, we're going." It is the unofficial opening ceremony of the week — the moment the city stops being a place you visit and starts being a place you belong to. Logistics: Wednesday, July 22, 2026, 8:00 PM to 2:00 AM at Parq Nightclub, 615 Broadway, San Diego, CA 92101 (Preview Night, the night before Comic-Con officially opens). San Diego Symphony — Summer Pops at The Rady Shell 2026
Jun 5 – Sep 19, 2026 The Rady Shell at Jacobs Park, 222…

The San Diego Symphony's Summer Pops season at The Rady Shell at Jacobs Park brings world-class orchestral music to the San Diego waterfront for a series of outdoor concerts running June through September 2026. The Rady Shell — an acoustically engineered open-air performance venue on the waterfront at Jacobs Park — provides a stunning setting for the Symphony's summer season with San Diego Bay visible beyond the audience. The Summer Pops programming spans the full range from classical masterworks to pops concerts featuring Broadway music, film scores, jazz, and popular artists performing with orchestral accompaniment. The variety makes the summer season accessible to audiences who aren't regular classical concertgoers while delivering the full orchestral experience that the Symphony's musician quality supports. The Rady Shell's outdoor format is distinctly family-friendly — picnic blankets, lawn chairs, and the relaxed atmosphere of the waterfront park contrast with the formality of indoor concert halls. The adjacent Jacobs Park lawn allows families to spread out while the children remain within range of the music. Food and wine are available from vendors on-site. The Rady Shell at Jacobs Park is located at 222 Park Blvd in downtown San Diego, walkable from the Embarcadero and accessible via MTS Trolley (Convention Center station). Parking in the downtown convention center structures. Individual concert tickets and season subscriptions available through the San Diego Symphony website.

Somewhere in your closet sits a game you bought six months ago and have never once put on a table. This is where that ends. The back tables open up on Wednesday nights, and the store library is the real draw — hundreds of titles, gateway stuff through heavy euros through the social deduction games that ruin friendships, all free to play off the shelf. Come alone and slide into something already running. Bring three people and teach them the thing you have been evangelizing. Or finally cut the shrink wrap. The regulars here have been showing up long enough to know which games are worth the rules explanation and which new release is overhyped, and that informal knowledge is the whole difference between a game night that works and one that is merely organized. Doors stay open late and it costs nothing. Text the friend who keeps saying you should hang out more. This is the hang.

Oct 4, 2026 400 Kettner Blvd, San Diego, CA 92…

The Mustang Club of San Diego has been running this show for decades, and the reason it keeps drawing 250-plus entries and thousands of spectators has nothing to do with brand loyalty. It's because this is the car show where the owners actually want to talk to you. Every generation of Mustang since 1964 lines up along the Embarcadero — the early fastbacks that started it all, the Boss 302s, the Fox bodies that everyone made fun of until they didn't, the Shelby GT500s that cost more than some houses. The owners stand next to their cars with the hoods up, and if you ask a question you're going to get an answer that's longer and more passionate than you expected. October 4 at Embarcadero Marina Park North. Free to attend. If you're entering a car, registration details are on the Mustang Club of San Diego site. The bay view behind a row of polished muscle cars is a photograph that takes itself.

June's Dragon Ball Sparking Zero community night at GameSync in downtown San Diego on June 27. The meta has evolved since launch — new techniques, new character tiers, new answers to the old dominant strategies — and so has the local competition. Full bracket, character variety encouraged, and the kind of crowd energy that only Dragon Ball generates in a live room. GameSync is the right venue for this: a fighting game community arcade with an audience that grew up with the franchise and takes it seriously without losing the joy. This is not casual. It is the San Diego FGC choosing the game it wants to compete at, which means the skill level is real and the matches are worth watching even if you are not in the bracket. Show up early to warm up. Bracket play starts after an open practice period. 2860 Main St in Barrio Logan — free street parking available after 6 PM. All skill levels welcome. The regulars will explain the matchups. Dragon Ball Sparking Zero rewards style as much as execution. This is the game the community chose. Show up.

Rose City Comic Con 2026 — Portland, OR
Sep 11 – Sep 13, 2026 Oregon Convention Center, 777 NE M…

You can spend hours in artist alley here just talking with independent creators - not waiting in a celebrity autograph line, actually talking - and that is the tell about what kind of convention this is. Three days at the Oregon Convention Center of floor, panels, and programming, built for people who care about comics as an art form: the creators and the medium, not only the IP franchises. Celebrity guests span comics, film, and television, with signing and photo opportunities throughout the weekend, but the heart of the show is the alley and the cosplay, which is one of the strongest scenes on the West Coast - the hall dense with elaborate builds and the crowd treating it as a showcase rather than a costume contest. Gaming rooms, tabletop areas, and panel programming round out a schedule that can run ten hours a day for serious attendees. What makes Rose City hold together is that it is built for people who love comics as a medium and stays genuinely accessible while doing it: the scale is manageable, the crowd is easy, and tickets run $17-$105 depending on day and package. For cosplayers, the Portland fanbase means extraordinary hall costumes without the New York or San Diego Comic-Con crowds. If the bigger conventions have priced or exhausted you out, this delivers the best of what those events promise at a fraction of the friction. It has quietly become the essential West Coast convention for independent comics, occupying the space between the industry-scale San Diego Comic-Con and the grassroots spirit of smaller regional shows. Portland's identity as a creative, DIY city gives it an energy distinct from LA or Bay Area equivalents - this is where you find what is coming in comics before it reaches mass-market shelves. A few practical notes. Friday hours are 1 to 8 PM, Saturday 10 AM to 7 PM, Sunday 10 AM to 5 PM; Saturday crowds are significantly denser, which makes Sunday the calmer entry point for first-timers. Artist Alley is the heart of the show, so budget both time and money for it. The Oregon Convention Center is served by Portland MAX light rail, and the Convention Center stop drops you right at the door, so a car is unnecessary if you are staying downtown. MTG Reality Fracture Prerelease — Game Empire
Sep 25, 2026 1795 E Colorado Blvd, Pasadena, CA…

Six packs, forty minutes, and a set nobody on earth has solved yet. This is the one weekend where being wrong costs you nothing, because everyone at the table is wrong together. Prerelease rewards improvisation in a way constructed play never will. You crack the packs cold, you build fast, and then across three rounds you find out whether the pile you assembled has a plan hiding in it. Somebody's disastrous five-color deck goes undefeated. Somebody's clean two-color build folds in the first round. Nobody has read a primer because there is no primer to read. Half the room stays past the last round to trade and keep cracking packs. It runs at the shop, the way prereleases have always run at the shop. Go with the friend who quit Magic years ago and has been waiting for a reason to come back. This is the reason. No singles to buy, no metagame to catch up on, just six packs and a table.

You grab a game you have never played, find people to learn it with, and four hours later you are still at the table because nobody in the building has anywhere else to be. That is the entire physics of Strategicon Gateway - the hotel format that lets board gaming in Southern California come to play at maximum density for three straight days. Hundreds of games are available to check out and play. Tournaments run across every major competitive title, and the dealer hall is stocked with publishers and designers who made the games people are sitting down to play in the next room. The open gaming library is the entry point; the tournaments are the depth, with a bracket for anyone who plays competitively; the dealer hall is the discovery layer, where publishers demo things not yet in stores and designers sit at their games and explain the design. The gaming community that mostly operates online gets to be in the same room and stay that way. Plan to play more than you expect. LAX Hilton, September 4-6, 2026. Every week at Groundswell Brewing in Chula Vista, the tables get cleared and the board games come out. Chess, UNO, Scrabble, Settlers of Catan, whatever someone brings from home — the brewery provides the space and the craft beer, and the regulars provide the competition. Runs 6-10 PM every Tuesday night. This is not a tournament and nobody is keeping score across weeks, at least not officially. It is a room full of people who realized that sitting across from someone with a game between you is the fastest way to go from strangers to friends without having to make small talk about the weather. Groundswell is at 3097 Ocean View Blvd in the Barrio Logan area. No cover charge and no minimum. Just show up, pick a table, find a game on the shelf or bring your own, and ask who needs a fourth. The brewery's tap list rotates seasonally, so even the beer is different every time you come back. The crowd skews young but the regulars span every age.

Ask how anyone found the food section and you get the same answer three times over: somebody told them. Not a listing, not an ad — a cousin, a coworker, a person who went once and could not shut up about it afterward. Pancit, lumpia, lechon, sinigang, halo-halo, and the regional dishes that shift from one island province to the next. Four decades in, this is among the largest gatherings of Filipino and Filipino American art and community anywhere in the country, and it is free, outdoors, and organized by the people it is for rather than by an outside producer who studied the market. That distinction shows up everywhere. Folk dance companies and Kulintang ensembles share the main stage with Fil-Am songwriters, original theater, and film, putting the generation that arrived and the generation born here into the same afternoon on purpose. Two days in September, tens of thousands of people, no ticket. Send it to the friend whose lola's cooking you have heard about for years.

SoFi Stadium in Inglewood is one of eleven US host venues for the 2026 FIFA World Cup — the most technologically advanced stadium in the world hosting the most watched sporting event on the planet. Los Angeles is slated to host group stage matches beginning in June and a semifinal on July 14, 2026, making SoFi Stadium the epicenter of the West Coast's World Cup experience. The stadium complex, home to the Rams and Chargers, seats 70,000 with a capacity that can expand to 100,000 for events of this scale, and its translucent roof and in-bowl video halo make it the most visually distinctive venue in the tournament. Los Angeles has one of the largest soccer supporter communities in the United States, built through decades of LA Galaxy history, Liga MX fandom, and the international community that calls the city home — when the World Cup comes to Inglewood, those communities all gather in the same stadium for the first time at this scale. Tickets for individual matches are available through FIFA's official portal; hospitality packages through SoFi. If you have any connection to the 32 qualifying nations playing in LA, this is the pilgrimage.

The first four notes of Hedwig's Theme have never failed to do the thing they do - and hearing them played by a full orchestra, in real time, while the film runs on a screen above the water, is a different order of the feeling entirely. This is not a concert with some Harry Potter branding stapled on; the San Diego Symphony performs John Williams' complete score for Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone live, synchronized to the movie, every scene he scored - the quidditch match, the troll in the dungeon, the final confrontation. It plays three nights at the Rady Shell, the waterfront amphitheatre on the Embarcadero, with the San Diego skyline behind the stage. The fandom in this city has been waiting a long time, and three nights is still not enough seats for everyone who wants to go. August 21, 22, and 23, 2026, 7pm. Tickets at theshell.org. Book early.

MEGACON Orlando 2027 — Orlando, FL
May 20, 2027 Orange County Convention Center, 9…

The largest fan convention in the southeastern United States happens in a city already built entirely around manufactured wonder, which could have made it redundant and instead makes it a useful contrast — this is the weekend when Orlando's fantasy is assembled by the people attending rather than sold to them. MEGACON has grown into a four-day event at the Orange County Convention Center drawing well over a hundred thousand people. What it is, practically, is enormous and unusually broad. Comics, anime, gaming, horror, science fiction and a large celebrity guest roster all sit under one roof, and the show has leaned hard into fan-built spectacle: costume contests with real production value, a substantial number of large-scale prop and vehicle builds, and an artist alley that has become one of the bigger ones in the country. Because Florida draws attendees from across the Southeast and the Caribbean, the crowd composition is different from the coastal shows — younger on average, more family groups, and noticeably more first-timers, which gives the floor an enthusiasm that jaded convention veterans find slightly startling. Worth it? If you live anywhere in the Southeast, this is the show, and the guest list alone usually justifies it. If you are traveling from far away specifically for it, the honest answer is that the convention is excellent but the surrounding city will absorb your budget fast, so plan for that deliberately rather than accidentally. It is not the show for deep comics scholarship; it is the show for scale, spectacle and meeting people whose work you know from a screen. What to know: the Orange County Convention Center is vast and the two buildings are a real walk apart, so check your hall. Autograph and photo op tickets sell separately and the popular ones go early. Florida in May is hot and the walk from parking is unshaded. Bring water; there are refill stations. And the Thursday preview day is significantly calmer if your badge covers it. It sits on this list because a hundred thousand people building their own spectacle in the shadow of the world's most engineered one is a genuinely interesting thing to know is happening. MEGACON Orlando 2027 runs May 20–23, 2027 at the Orange County Convention Center.

Gen Con 2026 — Indianapolis, IN
Jul 30 – Aug 2, 2026 Indianapolis Convention Center, 10…

Strangers sit down together at open gaming tables to learn a game from the person who designed it, freshly flown in from Germany or Japan — and the exhibit hall is so vast it takes twenty minutes to walk corner to corner. The world's largest tabletop gaming convention fills the Indiana Convention Center and Lucas Oil Stadium for four days in Indianapolis, and if it is played on a table, it is here. Walking into Gen Con for the first time is sensory overload in the best possible way: thousands of people carrying bags of dice, rulebooks, and game boxes, publishers debuting their most anticipated releases, announcements landing here before anywhere else. First-timers routinely describe the first afternoon as having their mind melted by the scale; veterans of fifteen years still find things they have never seen. This is not for people who play Monopoly at Christmas — it is for people for whom games are a world, not a hobby. If you have ever wanted to sit across from a designer and learn what they were trying to say, if discovering a game before it launches feels like finding something no one else knows yet, this is worth the flight. If none of that resonates, skip it. Register early — the 17,000-plus ticketed events open months in advance and popular sessions sell out within minutes. Saturday is the largest single day; Thursday and Sunday move at a more human pace. Wear the most comfortable shoes you own and expect to walk ten or more miles a day. Buy a four-day badge even if you plan only two days, as single-day badges are limited, and book downtown Indianapolis hotels the moment badges go on sale. Bring a large tote and loose plans — the best moments at Gen Con are the ones you did not schedule. People do not attend Gen Con. They go to Gen Con, the way you go somewhere that requires intention. The tabletop renaissance of the last decade produced a global community of people who take games seriously as an art form and a social infrastructure, and this is where that community assembles in full — the entire history of the medium, the present state of the art, and the first glimpses of what comes next, under one roof for four days every summer. Pasadena, California. June 14th, 2026. The Pokemon TCG City Championship at 1795 E Colorado Blvd — $20 to enter — and the question that every competitive player in the Los Angeles area has been asking since the last set dropped: does your deck actually work against the meta, or just against the people you've been testing with? City Championships are where the theory meets the table. The players who show up have been building and refining since the Regional results settled the last major format question. The top tables by round three are running optimized lists, reading opponents, and making plays that assume the other person has done their homework. That level of play is worth watching even if you're not registered — pull up a chair at a feature match and watch two people who know exactly what they're doing. Side events run for everyone who dropped or just wants reps in a tournament environment. The staff is experienced. The setting creates the right conditions for competitive play. Registration at play.pokemon.com. Bring your best list. If you've been sitting on a deck idea, this is the room where you find out if it works against players who prepared for exactly what you're running.

Nothing teaches humility like the guy across the table flipping over a dragon on turn six while you are still setting up your mana. A prerelease is where you learn to live with that. Six packs land in front of you. You build from what you open, nobody has a tuned deck, and the cards are new enough that everyone is reading them for the first time — which is the great equalizer, and the reason this is the friendliest door into Magic that exists. Middle-earth is the setting this time: Bilbo, Gandalf, the One Ring, and Smaug sitting in somebody's pool waiting to ruin your afternoon in the best possible way. You will show up alone and leave having argued about a rules interaction with three people whose names you now know. Come lose to a dragon. It is a good story either way.

No stage. No stream setup. No commentary desk. Just tables, sleeves coming off, and the specific sound of a binder opening — which is what this community actually is in the months between the big tournaments nobody can get into. Spikes runs this monthly and it has quietly become a fixture of the LA card game scene. Open play, trades, brackets that stay friendly. Competitive grinders sit next to collectors who never play a match and just want to turn pages all night, and neither one makes the other feel out of place. That is harder to build than a prize pool. The regulars take the time to teach — walk in with an out-of-the-box deck and somebody will tell you what is wrong with it and then help you fix it. Spikes Lounge on East Washington Blvd in Commerce. Check @spikesloungecards for the confirmed date and entry each month. Bring the binder you have not opened since middle school. Somebody in that room wants exactly what is in it.

MTG Marvel Super Heroes Prerelease — Game Empire
Jun 19, 2026 1795 E Colorado Blvd, Pasadena, CA…

Game Empire, 1795 E Colorado Blvd, Pasadena. June 19th. The Magic: The Gathering Marvel Super Heroes Prerelease at Game Empire — the first day the new cards are legal, the format is wide open, and every player at every table is figuring out the same things at the same time. Game Empire in Pasadena is the right venue for this: a serious game store with the staff, the space, and the community infrastructure to run a prerelease the way it should run. The Marvel set lands with IP recognition that makes the card design readable to players who know the characters, and Prerelease Sealed makes the event accessible regardless of collection size. The sealed format is the great equalizer of tournament Magic. Six packs, forty-five minutes to build, then play. The person across from you is running whatever they opened, not a list they tested for six weeks. magic.wizards.com for the full Marvel set spoilers and the store locator. June 19th. Game Empire's Pasadena location is the right room for this — a real store, a real community, and a tournament on new card day.

Gaylord Pacific Resort & Convention Center, 1000 H St, Chula Vista. May 22nd, 2026. Card Party 4 is the trading card game pop-up market that treats the hobby the way it deserves — a real venue, a serious vendor selection, and the specific energy of a room full of people who know exactly what they're looking at. Card Party is not a casual flea market. The vendors who table here specialize — sealed product, singles, graded cards, vintage sets, and the newer releases that have been moving in the secondary market. Walking the floor is the experience of seeing the full spectrum of what collecting looks like at every level, from the person pulling a specific card for a deck they've been building to the collector sitting on long boxes of raw vintage stock. The Gaylord Pacific Resort gives the event the setting to match its ambitions — a convention-scale resort venue in Chula Vista, accessible from San Diego and across the South Bay. card.party for the full vendor list and ticket details. If you collect cards of any kind — Pokemon, Magic, sports, vintage — this is the show that covers the entire hobby under one roof. Come with a want list. Leave with more than you planned.

MAVERiC Studio Night Market & Dice Goblins — SDCC 2026
Jul 24, 2026 1100 Market St, San Diego, CA 92101

Friday night of Comic-Con week, when the convention center locks its doors and the Gaslamp fills with people who still have energy to burn, a night market opens at UC San Diego Park & Market that exists for the people who came to San Diego because they love games, not just the ones on screens. Dice Goblins is a tabletop gaming night market where the vendor tables sell handmade dice sets, custom miniatures, indie RPG zines, and the kind of leather-bound journals that make you want to start a campaign just so you have somewhere to write. MAVERiC Studio hosts this as a free event that does not require a Comic-Con badge. The format is part night market, part gaming lounge. Tables are set up for pickup games. Indie game designers demo unreleased titles. The dice merchants are there because they know that Comic-Con week concentrates more tabletop gamers per square mile than any other week in any other city, and they are right. The crowd is a mix of D&D lifers, Pathfinder converts, miniature painters who brought their work, and people who have never rolled a d20 but are about to. Doors open at 5:00 PM and run until 11:30 PM. The location at Park & Market puts it close enough to the Gaslamp that you can walk from the convention center but far enough that the vibe is its own thing. Free entry. No badge. Just tabletop culture, after dark, during the week when that culture peaks.

Summer Game Fest 2026
Jun 5 – Jun 8, 2026 Dolby Theatre, 6801 Hollywood Blvd…

Dolby Theatre, 6801 Hollywood Blvd, Hollywood, CA. June 5th, 2026. Summer Game Fest takes the building where the Oscars happen and fills it with the games industry's mid-year announcement moment. Every major publisher and many independent studios use this event to release trailers, gameplay reveals, and release date announcements to a room that is simultaneously the most attentive gaming audience in the world. SGF is where the E3-shaped hole in the gaming calendar now lives. The show streams globally, but the audience in the Dolby Theatre experiences the announcements before the internet processes them — the reactions happen in real time, with the people around you, before the takes arrive. A trailer reveal in that room is the announcement, not the broadcast of it. If you're in the industry, this is the room where the year's games landscape becomes visible. If you follow gaming closely, attending in person is the experience that the stream approximates but doesn't replicate. summergamefest.com for registration options and the associated public events that run throughout the June 5th-6th window in Hollywood. The conversation that happens in the hours after the show is part of it.

FAN EXPO Dallas 2026 — Dallas, TX
Sep 11 – Sep 13, 2026 Kay Bailey Hutchison Convention Ce…

Walk onto the floor on Saturday morning and the whole logic of the place clicks: this is a convention built to hold the entire range of fan culture under one roof without splitting anyone off from anyone else. Anime, gaming, horror, comics - all of it, 65,000 people, three days in Dallas. The anime wing runs voice actor signings and screening rooms. The gaming section has playable demos and tournament brackets. The horror area draws cult actors and practical-effects artists. The comics floor features creators behind titles both mainstream and independent. Celebrity photo ops and autograph lines run all weekend, and FAN EXPO's booking operation is one of the most reliable in the industry - the guests announced are the guests who actually show. The Cosplay Red Carpet on Saturday is a highlight, with contestants from across Texas and the surrounding region bringing builds that rival anything at the coastal mega-cons. The crowd energy skews genuinely enthusiastic rather than industry-transactional, and first-timers frequently note how manageable the floor layout is despite the scale. This is for anyone who has wanted to see their favorite franchise represented at scale - not just as merchandise, but as community. It's family-accessible without being dumbed down, competitive without being exclusionary, and large enough to spend a full day discovering things you didn't plan for. The Friday preview session runs 4-9 PM and is notably less crowded than the weekend, so with a three-day pass, Friday evening is the best time to cover artist alley. Celebrity photo ops sell out weeks before the event - book through the FAN EXPO app as soon as your guests are announced. The convention center is accessible from the Dallas Convention Center DART station, the practical choice on Saturday when surrounding parking fills. Bring a battery pack; you'll live on your phone for the app schedule and maps. Saturday afternoon is peak crowd; Sunday morning is the quietest slot. The Dallas edition has grown into the defining fan event for the entire South-Central region - the convention people in Houston, Austin, Oklahoma City, and beyond mark on their calendars. September 11-13 at the Kay Bailey Hutchison Convention Center, Dallas. Tickets at fanexpohq.com/fanexpodallas.

So-Cal Cosplay Shoot — Waterfront
Sep 20, 2026 Free Embarcadero, San Diego, CA 92101

A character you'd photograph against Balboa Park's mission arches reads completely differently against ferry docks, harbor patrol boats, and the downtown skyline at sunset - and that's the entire reason to bring your build to the water instead. The So-Cal Cosplay Shoot at the Waterfront is the open-air edition, San Diego Bay behind every frame, the Embarcadero handing each costume an urban backdrop with water and skyline in the same shot. It's not better or worse than the park version; it's a different image, and the difference is the point. Any fandom, any build. Photographers with gear are welcome and encouraged. The waterfront light peaks in the late afternoon, so arrive early enough to catch golden hour before the crowd fills in. The shoot is organized but relaxed - come in costume and find the right backdrop. Embarcadero, San Diego. September 20th. Free.
