Camp Flog Gnaw Carnival 2026 — Los Angeles, CA
Nov 14 – Nov 15, 2026 200 Dodger Stadium, 1000 Vin Scully Av…

Tyler the Creator builds his festival the way he makes his albums — as a complete vision, not a lineup. The 2026 edition runs November 16–17 at Dodger Stadium: Tyler himself, Andre 3000, Erykah Badu, Playboi Carti, Earl Sweatshirt, Vince Staples, Daniel Caesar. Sixty thousand people. This is his current read on what matters. Flog Gnaw feels nothing like a conventional music festival. Tyler's aesthetic — Golf Wang colors, surrealist visual direction, Converse collabs, the cartoon universe he's been building since Odd Future — pervades every inch of the grounds. The headliner list reads like Tyler's personal taste index rather than a booking agency's safe plays: Andre 3000's rare public appearances, Earl Sweatshirt's deliberately sparse touring schedule, legacy artists like Erykah Badu alongside younger voices. The surprise guest tradition is genuine — in past years unannounced performers have drawn more conversation than the headliners. The crowd skews young, fashion-conscious, and culturally literate in a way that is self-selecting. Flog Gnaw is the festival where people bring cameras for the fits, not just the performances. This is for people whose music listening doesn't fit a single genre label — who have Tyler the Creator, Badu, Earl, and Daniel Caesar on the same playlist and see nothing contradictory about that. It is for the aesthetically curious. It is not for people who want clear setlist times, grid-pattern stages, and predictable headliner slots. Tyler runs his festival on his own logic, and that's the point. If that energy resonates, Camp Flog Gnaw is one of the few festivals where the curation is unambiguously the product. Two-day passes sell significantly faster than single-day. The Dodger Stadium location is accessible by Metro (Dodger Stadium Express from Union Station — skip the parking). Merchandise drops at Flog Gnaw are serious and sell out quickly; the Golf Wang collabs available only at the festival have become collector items. Arrive early day one — the grounds have carnival rides, food, and art installations that reward exploration before the headliners. Andre 3000's live appearances remain rare enough to justify the trip from anywhere in the country. Tyler the Creator built a world — Golf Wang, Odd Future, Igor, Call Me If You Get Lost, Cherry Bomb — and Flog Gnaw is where that world becomes a place you can stand in for two days. The music industry produces thousands of festivals. Very few of them feel like they could only exist because one specific person willed them into being. Flog Gnaw is one of them. Tickets at Ticketmaster. November 16-17, 2026, Dodger Stadium, Los Angeles.

TCS New York City Marathon 2026 -- New York, NY
In 8 days · Nov 1 Free to spectate Central Park, New York, NY 10024

Stake out a corner of a New York sidewalk on the first Sunday in November and something happens that no ticket can buy: for one morning you stop being a spectator and become part of the city itself, one voice in a wall of them, cheering strangers you will never see again through the hardest thing they will do all year. The TCS New York City Marathon runs twenty-six miles through all five boroughs - the world's largest race, 55,000 runners and 1.7 million spectators, and the most complete tour of the city's actual geography that exists. Marathon Sunday is unlike anything else in American sports culture; the city does not just host the race, it becomes it. From the Verrazzano-Narrows Bridge opening stretch to the final uphill push through Central Park, each borough cheers in its own accent - Fort Hamilton Heights in Brooklyn, the sound tunnel of the Queensboro Bridge, First Avenue in Manhattan lined five deep, the Bronx, and finally the last mile in the park, a wall of noise. If you run at all, or ever wanted to, this is the race that rewrites what you believe is possible: the world's fastest elites on the same course as a 72-year-old finishing a bucket list. The 2026 edition is the 50th running of the current course. The spectator experience is completely free along the entire route. For those who want to run, entry is through NYRR's lottery (applications open in January), with charity bibs available year-round through hundreds of partner organizations. Do not try to cross the city by car on Marathon Sunday - road closures make it nearly impassable; take the subway to any borough mid-course. The best spectator spots: Brooklyn's Atlantic Avenue around mile 8, First Avenue in Manhattan around mile 16, and the finish area at Central Park's Tavern on the Green. Download the NYC Marathon app to track a specific runner, and bring a sign - the course is long, and personalized cheering genuinely moves people. Race information and charity bibs at nyrr.org. November 1, 2026. Start: Fort Wadsworth, Staten Island. Finish: Central Park, Manhattan.

Denver Film Festival 2026 — Denver, CO
Every day · Next Oct 25 1000 14th St, Denver, CO 80202

Something happens at 10 PM on a Wednesday in the Ellie Caulkins Opera House when a director from a country most Americans can't locate on a map introduces a film about a life you've never considered, and the audience sits in the dark and lets a stranger rearrange how they see the world. That chemical hit is what the Denver Film Festival has been manufacturing since 1978, making it one of the oldest film festivals in America — and every October it proves that nearly five decades of practice has only sharpened the dose. The 49th edition runs October 22 through November 1, 2026, across ten days and multiple venues in downtown Denver including the Ellie Caulkins Opera House and the Sie FilmCenter. More than 140 new films from countries across the globe screen for 27,000 attendees, joined by over 50 international filmmakers, directors, and actors who stick around for Q&As, panel discussions, and the kind of bar conversations that only happen when someone has just watched something that rewired them. If you're the kind of person who watches the Sundance lineup announcement with genuine excitement — who texts friends about a documentary trailer, who has opinions about aspect ratios — this festival is worth the flight. The programming spans narrative features, documentaries, shorts, and experimental work, all selected with the curatorial rigor that comes from doing this longer than most festivals have existed. Red carpet presentations run alongside industry workshops, filmmaker receptions, and networking events that feel less like industry and more like congregation. What to know before you go: Denver in late October is crisp and gorgeous — layers are mandatory, the light is golden, and the brewery scene means the post-screening nightcap is never the hard part. Single tickets, multi-packs, and festival passes are available at denverfilm.org. Book early — the marquee screenings sell out, and the best discoveries are in the slots you didn't plan for. The Sie FilmCenter runs year-round if you need a preview. The Denver Film Festival matters because it's proof that nearly fifty years of showing up, every October, in the same city, for the same reason — to sit in a dark room with strangers and feel something together — is enough to build a tradition that outlasts every trend, every platform, every algorithm. The films change. The experience doesn't.

DOC NYC 2026 — America's Largest Documentary Film Festival — New York, NY
Nov 11, 2026 IFC Center, 323 6th Ave, New York,…

Every November, Manhattan becomes the center of nonfiction storytelling. DOC NYC — America's largest documentary film festival — returns to the IFC Center and partner venues for its seventeenth year, screening more than two hundred films that range from intimate personal portraits to sweeping investigations of the systems that shape how we live. World premieres sit alongside retrospectives. First-time filmmakers screen in the same program as Oscar veterans. The Q&As after the screenings are not polite formalities — they are the room processing what it just saw, together, with the person who made it standing right there. True crime, climate, sports, music, politics, family — the range is the point. If you care about the world and you want to see it through eyes that are not your own, this is the room. The festival has steadily grown into the definitive showcase for nonfiction storytelling in the United States. It is where the films that will be nominated for Academy Awards in February get their first public screenings in November. The in-person component runs for ten days across Manhattan, with an additional ten days of online access for anyone in the country who wants to participate from home. A single all-access pass opens every screening — no hierarchy, no red carpet separating audiences from filmmakers. What makes DOC NYC different from other film festivals is scale married to intimacy. Two hundred films across ten days means you could see three or four a day and still miss most of the program. But the venues are small enough that you will share an elevator with the director whose film just wrecked you, and the conversations that happen in the lobby between screenings are half the experience. The online extension means geography is not a barrier — someone in San Diego can watch the same film as someone who just walked out of the IFC Center, and both reactions count. November 11-19, 2026 (in-person) and November 11-29 (online). IFC Center and partner venues, Manhattan, New York City. The IFC Center and its partner rooms keep programming documentaries the rest of the year, and the same crowd argues in the same lobbies.

George Balanchine's The Nutcracker 2026 — New York City Ballet, Lincoln Center
Nov 27, 2026 David H. Koch Theater, Lincoln Cen…

Some performances exist because they are scheduled. The Nutcracker at Lincoln Center exists because New York City needs it — the way a city needs its bridges or its park, something that holds the place together by being exactly where it always is when the temperature drops. George Balanchine choreographed this version of The Nutcracker in 1954, and New York City Ballet has performed it every holiday season since. It is not the only Nutcracker in the world, but it is the one that defined what the word means to most Americans — the growing Christmas tree that seems to rise past the ceiling, the snow scene that uses real-looking flakes falling in a way that makes the audience hold its breath, the second act's parade of dances from around the world, each one a tiny jewel of a thing that lasts just long enough to leave you wanting more. The 2026-2027 season runs from Friday, November 27, 2026 through Sunday, January 3, 2027 at the David H. Koch Theater at Lincoln Center, West 63rd Street and Columbus Avenue. Tickets go on sale in September at nycballet.com or by phone at 212-496-0600. Prices range depending on seat location and performance date, but matinees tend to be slightly less expensive and equally magical. The production itself is massive — the sets were designed by Rouben Ter-Arutunian and have been meticulously maintained and restored over the decades. The Christmas tree grows from 12 feet to over 40 feet during the transformation scene, a piece of stagecraft that still draws gasps from audiences who know exactly when it is coming. The cast draws from NYCB's full company plus students from the School of American Ballet, meaning you are watching the next generation of American ballet share a stage with its current one. The final performance on January 3 at 1 PM is a special physical-friendly show with adjusted lighting and sound levels, relaxed house policies, designated break areas, and pre-visit materials — designed so that families who might not attend a traditional performance can experience the ballet in a setting that works for them. This is the kind of event where a first-time visitor cries during the snow scene and cannot explain why, and a season ticket holder who has seen it forty times watches the same scene and still leans forward. Lincoln Center at the holidays is its own kind of pilgrimage — the fountain lit up, the tree in the plaza, the crowd filing in. If you have never been, go. If you have been, go again. The Nutcracker does not change, but you do, and the performance meets you wherever you are.

Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade 2026 -- New York, NY
Nov 26, 2026 77th Street & Central Park West, N…

From 77th Street down to Herald Square on Thanksgiving morning, two and a half million people line the route. The Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade has been doing this since 1924. The parade experience on the ground is unlike watching it on television. The balloons — some 16 giant character balloons representing beloved cultural icons from Snoopy to SpongeBob — tower five to six stories above the crowd and move with an unpredictable, living quality that cameras cannot capture. Broadway performers open each show segment. Marching bands from across the country perform along the 2.5-mile route. The floats are hand-built artworks. The energy of a crowd that lines up before dawn, wrapped in coats and coffee cups, for something they have seen every year since childhood — is genuinely moving in a way that resists irony. The Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade is worth attending if you have ever watched it on television and wondered what it would be like to be there. The answer: colder, louder, and more emotionally resonant than you expect. This is one of the rare public events that functions identically for a six-year-old and a sixty-year-old. If you are a New Yorker who has always meant to go and never has: this is the year. Viewing tips: The best spots are along Central Park West from 72nd to 77th Street — arrive before 7 AM to claim a spot against the barriers. The parade steps off at 8:30 AM and passes any given point by 10 AM. Bring hand warmers, thermos coffee, and folding chairs. Avoid Herald Square — it is the most crowded and worst vantage point despite being the broadcast location. Midtown hotel prices spike 300-500 percent the week of Thanksgiving. Book months in advance or stay in Brooklyn. The parade is free, public, and unreservable. The transaction is not logistical. It is the decision to show up and be present at something that will look the same and feel different every single time.

You have had the conversation where you mention a slasher you have seen twenty times and you watch the other person's face do the polite thing. Nobody's face does that here. Everyone in the room has a tape they wore out too, and the relief of not having to justify it is most of why people keep coming back. Since 2003 that room has been in Orlando every October, and people fly in from all fifty states for a long weekend of it. This is not an entry point into horror. It is a homecoming for people who already know exactly what they love and have stopped apologizing for it. The spine of the weekend is access that exists almost nowhere else in the genre: the actual faces from Halloween, Friday the 13th, A Nightmare on Elm Street, Scream and The Walking Dead, sitting a table away and in no hurry. Around them fills a whole floor of horror makeup artists, independent filmmakers, prop-replica craftspeople and authors, plus the best costume work you will see anywhere. This is craft rather than Halloween dress-up, and the crowd manages to be both the most enthusiastic and the most considerate in fandom. The October weekend is the flagship, with a bigger roster and more programming than the spring one, which is why photo ops and autograph sessions sell out within days of a guest announcement rather than within weeks. Build the must-see list before registration opens, not after. And know what kind of convention this is: it runs inside a hotel, not a convention center, so the weekend spills into the lobby and the bar, and the conversations people remember afterwards usually happen well after the panels end. Hyatt Regency Orlando, October 30 through November 1, 2026. Orlando is still warm by the end of October, so dress lighter than the season suggests, and settle the schedule before arriving, because improvising a weekend this dense is how people miss the three guests they flew in for. Horror keeps rooms like this running all year, in repertory houses and basement screenings and group chats that never quite go quiet. This is the weekend they all show up in the same building at once.

Dec 31 – Dec 31, 2026 Times Square, 1 Times Square, New …

It sounds optional right up until you are standing in a street you have seen a thousand times on screens, in the cold, with a million people counting down together - and then you understand why New Yorkers largely skip it and visitors from everywhere else largely cannot explain why they needed to do it once. New Year's Eve in Times Square operates as organized chaos at maximum human scale, and the ball has been dropping since 1907. Streets close to vehicle traffic by mid-afternoon, and people begin staking viewing positions hours before midnight. The ball itself is 12 feet across, weighs nearly 12,000 pounds, and is covered in 2,688 Waterford crystal triangles lit by LEDs. The confetti that fills the air at midnight is printed with handwritten wishes submitted in advance by people around the world - a detail most people only discover after it has already fallen on them. NYPD maintains sector-by-sector crowd control; once you are inside a viewing zone, you stay in it until after midnight. It is worth attending if you have never been and want to see what a city looks and sounds like at its most collectively alive. It is explicitly not worth it if you require warmth, freedom of movement, or reliable access to food and restrooms during a five-to-six-hour wait. Viewing zones open around 3 PM and fill from the stage outward, so arrive by early afternoon for a direct sightline to the ball. Bathrooms are extremely scarce with very long lines. Alcohol is prohibited in the public viewing areas. Dress for 25 to 35 degrees with wind, and bring hand warmers and layers. Your phone will likely not work for the first hour of 2027 as every carrier network in Manhattan saturates at once. Hotels within walking distance book out months ahead. That midnight moment is not available on any stream. December 31st, One Times Square.

Portland Book Festival 2026 — Portland, OR
Every day · Next Nov 2 1219 SW Park Ave, Portland, OR 972…

Portland doesn't have a literary scene. Portland is a literary scene — a city where the world's largest independent bookstore employs more people than some towns, where poets perform to sold-out rooms, where the kid at the coffee shop is reading Borges without irony. The Portland Book Festival is the annual proof, and in 2026 it expands for the first time into a full week: November 2 through 8, stretching across the South Park Blocks, the Portland Art Museum, McMenamins Mission Theater, Mississippi Studios, and Lan Su Chinese Garden. The main gathering on November 7 fills the South Park Blocks with more than 100 local, regional, and nationally acclaimed authors — readings, panels, pop-up writing workshops, a massive book fair, and, because this is Portland, food trucks parked on every corner. But the real expansion is in the surrounding days: evening events at music venues and restaurants, cross-disciplinary programming that pairs authors with live music and visual art, culinary experiences built around books about food, and late-night programming that turns what used to be a single-day book fair into a cultural festival with literature at its center. If you're the kind of person who keeps a running list of books you want to read that's longer than any list of books you've actually finished — who gets unreasonably excited when a favorite author announces a new title, who has talked about starting a novel but never quite has — this is the week where your people gather. The Oregon Symphony and Mississippi Studios provide the soundtrack. Lan Su Chinese Garden provides the setting for conversations that feel like they're happening in a novel rather than at a festival. The South Park Blocks provide the November air that makes holding a warm cup of coffee while carrying three new books feel like the only correct way to spend a Saturday. What to know before you go: Portland in November is gray, wet, and beautiful. Bring a rain jacket and a tote bag large enough for impulse buys at the book fair. Powell's City of Books is a fifteen-minute walk from the main festival grounds and is the obvious pre- or post-festival pilgrimage. Events range from free to ticketed. Full schedule at literary-arts.org. The Portland Book Festival is the Pacific Northwest's largest literary event, and its expansion to a full week is itself a statement: that books are not a niche interest but a way of moving through the world, and that the people who organize their lives around words deserve more than an afternoon.

Christmas Spectacular Starring the Radio City Rockettes 2026 — New York, NY
In 11 days · Nov 4 $50+ Radio City Music Hall, 1260 6th Av…

Thirty-six women breathe as one body and something in you stands at attention too. The kick line begins and the arithmetic of it — 36 legs, one sound, one beat, zero margin — bypasses your brain entirely and goes straight to the part of you that believes in things. The Christmas Spectacular Starring the Radio City Rockettes returns to Radio City Music Hall for the largest production in the show’s 93-year history: 230 scheduled performances from November 4 through January 4, ten show-stopping Rockettes numbers, and the iconic Parade of the Wooden Soldiers — performed every year since 1933, red-and-white soldiers executing military-precision choreography before their famous falling-dominoes finale. The 2026 season marks a new performance record for the Music Hall, with more shows than any year since the Christmas Spectacular debuted. If you are the kind of person who tears up at the first note of “O Holy Night” in a room full of strangers, this show was built for you. If you think holiday spectacles are corny and overpriced, this is the one that changes minds — not because it avoids sentimentality, but because it earns every second of it. The Rockettes are not a nostalgia act. They are 36 of the most technically precise dancers working today, performing at a synchronization level that professional sports teams study. First-timers are routinely stunned by the scale: the 90-minute runtime with no intermission feels like 30 minutes, and the stage effects — a full-size double-decker bus, indoor snowfall, a living Nativity with live camels — are architecture, not gimmicks. Arrive at least an hour early. Late entry is not permitted, and the walk through Rockefeller Center in November is half the experience. First Mezzanine center gives the best full-stage view — the kick line hits differently when you see all 36 at once. Orchestra center rows F through N put you at eye level with the precision footwork. Tickets start at $50 at the box office, $55 online through Ticketmaster or rockettes.com. Weekday matinees are the value play. Dress festive, wear comfortable shoes, eat before you go. Radio City Music Hall is the largest indoor theater in the world, and the Christmas Spectacular is its reason for existing. Every year, more than a million people walk through those Art Deco doors and sit in the dark with strangers and come out feeling like they belong to the same season. That is not a show. That is a civic ritual, and it runs from November through the first days of the new year because some things do not need to be new to be necessary.

Super Bowl LXI 2027 — Inglewood, CA
Feb 14, 2027 0 SoFi Stadium, 1001 Stadium Drive, …

The Super Bowl has come to Los Angeles before. It has never come to SoFi. That changes February 7, 2027 — at the half-billion-dollar stadium that opened in 2020 and changed what a modern NFL venue can look like: translucent canopy, open-air California design, Hollywood Park campus surrounding it. What Super Bowl week in Los Angeles looks and feels like is unlike any other sporting event on the calendar. The week before the game, Radio Row draws every media personality with a microphone. The NFL Experience fan festival opens to the public at the Convention Center. Celebrity parties are announced and cancelled and announced again. The halftime show rehearsals happen under tight security at the stadium while the surrounding streets fill with brand activations, pop-ups, and spontaneous gatherings of fans who couldn't get tickets but wanted to be near the thing. Los Angeles absorbs the Super Bowl differently than Nashville or Minneapolis — the entertainment industry and sports culture overlap here in a way that produces genuine energy rather than manufactured excitement. Is the Super Bowl worth attending in person? If you have the means and the access, the answer is yes, but the experience is as much about the week as the game. Super Bowl tickets are among the most expensive in sports, and the seat you occupy at game time may matter less than the four days of surrounding events, parties, and city energy that build toward kickoff. For the majority of people who will experience Super Bowl LXI from Los Angeles without attending the game, the city itself becomes a venue. Watch parties at venues across SoCal will be among the most concentrated social events of the year. What to know: Tickets sell through the NFL and Ticketmaster — secondary market prices will be extreme. The SoFi Stadium campus includes a performance venue (YouTube Theater), a casino (Inglewood), and hotel development in progress; the entertainment zone around the stadium is walkable and dense. Metro's C Line (Green) stops at Hawthorne/Lennox, about a 20-minute walk from SoFi. Parking is limited and expensive; transit from LAX is the recommended option for most attendees. The week's best experiences are often free — Radio Row, fan zones, and the energy of the city. Super Bowl LXI matters for one reason beyond the game itself: it is the largest single-day American cultural event, and in 2027 it comes to Los Angeles. The convergence of the NFL, Hollywood, the music industry (halftime show), and the national media in one city for one weekend creates a cultural moment that extends far beyond the game. Knowing about it, knowing what week to plan around it, knowing the venue and the city — that is the preparation that turns an ordinary February into the right February.

Tribeca Festival 2027 - New York, NY
Jun 3, 2027 Passes on sale Various venues, 50 Varick St, New …

The Tribeca Festival is the American festival that exists because a neighbourhood refused to die. Robert De Niro, Jane Rosenthal and Craig Hatkoff founded it in 2002 to pull people back into lower Manhattan after September 11, and twenty-five years later it has become the most genuinely public of the major festivals - less a market than a city-wide fortnight. The twenty-sixth edition runs June 3 to 12, 2027, across venues in Manhattan, with passes already on sale and submissions open. What it feels like, in practice, is New York in early June doing what it does best: too much happening at once, outdoors, in public. Tribeca long ago stopped being only a film festival. Since 2021 it has programmed television, podcasts, games, immersive work and live audio, and the result is that a single afternoon can take you from a documentary premiere to a podcast recorded live in front of six hundred people to an outdoor screening in a plaza where nobody paid anything. Screenings are routinely followed by conversations, live performance or a reunion of a cast, so a two-hour film becomes a three-hour evening. Red carpets happen on open streets rather than behind a mountain cordon, which is why Tribeca has a reputation for being the festival where ordinary ticket-buyers actually see people. Is it worth it? Yes - and specifically it is worth it for people who assume a major film festival is not for them. Sundance requires a mountain and a car; Cannes requires an industry badge. Tribeca requires a subway ride. If you are the sort of person who likes seeing something before the reviews exist and then arguing about it on the walk to the train, this is built for you. It is not the festival to attend if you want the year's awards contenders; those premiere in the autumn. Tribeca's strength is documentary, New York stories, and first features. What to know before you go: the rush line is real and it works. A screening showing as sold out online will almost always seat most of the rush queue at showtime, because advance sales close early and no-shows are common - locals buy single tickets at the door routinely. Skip the Storytelling Summit and anything staged at the Beacon Theatre if you are watching money; those are the premium tier and the programming is not proportionally better. Do seek out the free outdoor screenings, which are the best value in American festival-going and are where the founding civic purpose is still most visible. There is an Under 25 pass, and a Hudson Opening Weekend pass that covers unlimited priority access from opening day through that first Monday. Tribeca earns its place here because it is the rare cultural institution whose origin story is a civic one and whose present form still honours it. It was built to get people to walk back downtown. It still mostly works like that - which is why knowing it exists, even from three thousand miles away in June, is worth something.

MagicCon: Atlanta 2026 — Atlanta, GA
Nov 13 – Nov 15, 2026 Georgia World Congress Center, Bui…

Wizards of the Coast brings the official Magic: The Gathering convention to Atlanta — three days of competitive play, exclusive reveals, and side events that don't exist at a local game store. Step into MagicCon and the scale of the Magic ecosystem becomes visceral. The main hall hosts commander pods running nonstop, side event drafts firing every 90 minutes, and a merchandise floor stocked with exclusive foil treatments and collector editions that do not exist outside the convention walls. The World Championship stage draws a live audience who understands the stakes — watching a pro player navigate a complex board state in a top-8 match is legitimately thrilling even to non-competitive attendees. Panel stages feature lead designers previewing the upcoming set, Reality Fracture, with reveals that ripple across the entire community within minutes of announcement. Meet-and-greets with pro players and content creators run throughout the weekend, though they fill fast. The atmosphere skews intensely knowledgeable — this crowd knows what a Rhystic Study is, why it is obnoxious, and will argue about it with warmth. MagicCon Atlanta is for anyone who plays Magic with genuine investment — not necessarily competitive, but committed. If your Friday nights involve a Commander pod and you have at least one deck you have been tuning for six months, you will feel completely at home here. This is not a casual spectator event. It is for the player who loves the game enough to fly across the country for three days of it. First-timers to MagicCon frequently say the same thing: they had no idea how large and how skilled the community actually is until they walked in. Register for ticketed play events before the convention — sealed and draft pods sell out weeks in advance. Bring your trade binder if you have one: the secondary market area moves fast and has genuine deals. Badge merchandise must be picked up onsite; if you miss the pickup window before close on Sunday, you forfeit it. The Worlds stage is open to badge holders but seating near the feature match area is first-come, standing room fills by round 4 of the top 8. Bring cash for artist alley — many illustrators are cash-only and the original card alters available from top artists are some of the most collectible items in the room. For the Magic community, this is not just an event. It is the proof that the game is still alive, still evolving, and still worth every dollar you have spent on it. MagicCon: Atlanta 2026 runs November 13-15 at the Georgia World Congress Center, Atlanta. The same players turn up at regional opens and prereleases the rest of the year; this is the weekend the whole scene is in one building.

DesignerCon 2026 — Las Vegas
Nov 13 – Nov 15, 2026 Paid - $25-$45 Las Vegas, NV

Somewhere in a long box in your closet is a resin figure you bought at a show like this — a limited colorway, poured in a batch of fifty, that you will never find again because the artist made it once and moved on. You still remember what you paid. You have never once regretted it. That particular hunt, the one that has nothing to do with investment and everything to do with recognition, is the whole reason this room exists. DesignerCon has been the center of the designer toy world since 2004, and its Las Vegas edition takes over The Expo at World Market Center this November. The floor is art toys, designer vinyl, limited-run resin, plush, custom sneakers, streetwear and original pop art — sold artist-direct, in small batches, with no mass-market retail anywhere in the building. What separates it from a comic convention is who is standing behind the table. The person taking your money sculpted the thing you are holding. Booths are stacked with one-off customs and exclusive drops that exist in runs of twenty or thirty, and the floor has a particular rhythm: a slow early crawl while collectors map the aisles, a hard sprint when a drop goes live, then long stretches of artists simply talking to the people who own their work. Live painting happens in the open. Trades happen in the aisles. Nobody asks what anything is worth, because everyone already knows. If you can name the sculptor of a figure on your shelf, this is worth the flight and the hotel. It is not a show for bargain hunting — prices are artist-set and the grails go fast. It is for people who want the object and the story of the object at the same time. Anyone hunting licensed mass-market merchandise will find almost none of it here, and that absence is the entire point. The scheduling detail that catches first-timers every year: opening night is not a public day. Friday evening is VIP-only, so a general badge gets you in on Saturday, not Friday, and the people who paid up have already walked the floor before you arrive. Plan around it — the best pieces move in the first ninety minutes of each day, which makes Saturday morning the serious shopping window and Sunday the better day for actually speaking with artists, when the crush has thinned and tables are not three deep. Go in with a short list and a hard budget, because the floor is built to defeat both. Bring a padded bag; resin chips, and nobody wants to explain a cracked grail to airport security. The art toy scene spent two decades proving that a figure made by one person in a small batch could matter as much as anything with a studio logo on the box, and this is the room where that argument gets settled every year. The hunt does not end when the doors close on Sunday. It just moves to whatever the artist makes next. November 13–15, 2026. Friday is VIP only, 5–9 PM; Saturday 10 AM–7 PM with doors at 9 AM for VIP; Sunday 10 AM–5 PM. The Expo at World Market Center, 435 S Grand Central Pkwy, Las Vegas, NV 89106.

83rd National Folk Festival 2026 — Jackson, Mississippi
Every day · Next Nov 13 Downtown Jackson, 200 S Lamar St, …

Eighty-three years. That is how long the National Folk Festival has been wandering the country, setting up stages in a different American city every few years, and proving that the most extraordinary culture in the United States lives in ordinary places. The 83rd National Folk Festival comes to Jackson, Mississippi for three days of continuous music, dance, storytelling, craft demonstrations, and food from the people who carry these traditions in their hands and voices. More than 300 performers across up to seven stages — blues, gospel, zydeco, bluegrass, Native American dance, Appalachian clogging, Cajun accordion, Mississippi Delta harmonica. Every style earned its spot by surviving generations of being passed from person to person. Jackson is not an accident. The festival chose Mississippi because this state is where American music was born — where the blues walked out of the Delta, where gospel filled churches that became concert halls, where the crossroads are not a metaphor but a real intersection. The city becomes the stage. The traditions become the headliners. If you have ever wondered what American culture sounds like when nobody is trying to sell it to you, this is where you find out. The National Folk Festival is free — always has been, since 1934 — because the people who carry these traditions believe they belong to everyone. The performers are not celebrities. They are the last links in chains that stretch back centuries. A Cajun fiddler whose grandfather taught him the same tune. A quilter whose patterns encode stories her great-grandmother could not write down. A blues harmonica player from Clarksdale who sounds exactly like the Mississippi River feels. The food alone justifies the trip. Mississippi catfish, hot tamales from the Delta, soul food plates that could start a religion. Local artisans demonstrate crafts that predate the state itself. Children's programming runs all three days. The stages never go quiet. Presented by the National Council for the Traditional Arts as part of the Smithsonian's Of the People: Festival of Festivals initiative — a yearlong series of community celebrations across the country marking America's 250th anniversary. Free admission, all three days. November 13-15, 2026. Downtown Jackson, Mississippi. Worth the flight. Worth the drive. Worth remembering that the best culture in this country has always been free.

Vans Warped Tour Orlando 2026 — Camping World Stadium
Nov 14, 2026 $149+ Camping World Stadium, 1 Citrus Bo…

There is a specific frequency that lives in the opening chord of a pop-punk song — a frequency that bypasses your adult brain entirely and drops you back into the parking lot of whatever venue changed your life when you were sixteen. Vans Warped Tour returns to Orlando on November 14-15, 2026, at Camping World Stadium, and the lineup reads like a roll call of every band that taught a generation how to feel things out loud. Jimmy Eat World, whose 'The Middle' became the unofficial anthem of everyone who ever felt too weird for the cool table. Third Eye Blind, whose 'Semi-Charmed Life' soundtracked a million summer drives with the windows down. Taking Back Sunday, The Used, Sleeping with Sirens, Bowling for Soup, Flogging Molly, Simple Plan, Dropkick Murphys, Hoobastank, Hawthorne Heights, Hot Mulligan, and dozens more across two days and multiple stages. Warped Tour ran from 1995 to 2019 as America's definitive traveling punk rock festival — the place where bands got discovered, fans got sunburned, and the merch tent was the most important building in the world. The Long Beach revival in July proved the appetite never left. Orlando is the East Coast answer, and at 65,000-capacity Camping World Stadium, it is the largest venue Warped Tour has ever played. This is not a nostalgia act. This is a cultural institution proving it still has something to say. If you grew up on this music, you already know whether you need to be there — the question is not interest, it is logistics. If you did not grow up on it, this is the fastest education in American alternative music culture available anywhere in 2026. Two days. One campus. Every band that built the scene. Practical details worth knowing: the festival runs 11 AM to 10 PM both days. Tickets start at $149 for GA, $419 for VIP. The Orlando stop is part of Warped Tour's broader 2026 revival alongside the Long Beach edition. Camping World Stadium is located at 1 Citrus Bowl Place, Orlando, FL 32805 — the same venue that hosts the NFL Pro Bowl and major college football games. November in Orlando means high-seventies weather, which is kinder to a daylong outdoor festival than the August heat that used to define the original tour. The bands grew up. The fans grew up. The music didn't have to.

Anime Weekend Atlanta 2026 — Atlanta, GA
Nov 19 – Nov 22, 2026 Georgia World Congress Center, Bui…

The American South's longest-running anime convention has been meeting in Atlanta every September since 1997. Anime Weekend Atlanta is where the Southeast's anime fandom comes to recognize itself. Walk the AWA floor on a Thursday night and the energy hits immediately: cosplayers in elaborate handmade builds line the escalators, artist alley tables overflow with original prints and fan art, and the programming halls pulse with AMVs, panel debates, and late-night gaming tournaments that run until 3 AM. The dealers room is legitimately staggering — vintage merchandise, imports, rare figures, and indie creators all packed into a space where you could spend a full day and still miss things. The masquerade on Saturday night is one of the most theatrical cosplay competitions in the country, drawing contestants who have spent months on a single build. AWA moves differently than the mega-cons: it feels less like a trade show and more like a reunion — because for thousands of attendees, it genuinely is. If you grew up watching anime in the South and never found your people, AWA is the answer. This is not for casual fans who think anime is just Naruto and Dragon Ball. It is for people who obsess over seasonal charts, debate subculture lore, and have a hard drive full of unfinished cosplay plans. First-timers frequently describe AWA as the con that finally felt like home. If you are that person — the one who learned Japanese from subtitles and named a pet after a character — this is worth every flight mile. Book your hotel at the World Congress Center Marriott before August or it will sell out — AWA attendees treat the hotel block as sacred and it fills months in advance. Badge pickup lines on Thursday afternoon are brutal; opt for pre-registration and arrive before noon. The dealers room has no ATMs inside — bring cash, bring more than you think you need, and budget for at least one impulse figure you did not plan for. The programming schedule releases about six weeks before the event and fills fast; panel rooms cap out, so plan your must-see events 30 minutes early. The loading dock area outside Building C is where the best spontaneous cosplay photo shoots happen after dark. It is the convention that proved the South has always had its own thriving fan culture — it just needed a room big enough to hold it. AWA 2026 runs November 19-22 at the Georgia World Congress Center, Building C, Atlanta. The Southern con circuit keeps going the rest of the year in far smaller hotels, and the same people build costumes for all of it.

Winter WonderFest 2026 — Navy Pier, Chicago, IL
Nov 27, 2026 Navy Pier, 600 E Grand Ave, Chicag…

There is something about seeing a child's face when they walk into a room made entirely of holiday and realize that the ceiling is higher than any building they have ever been inside. Winter WonderFest at Navy Pier is Chicago's largest indoor holiday playground, and it has been earning that title for over a decade by filling the Grand Ballroom with enough light, motion, and sugar to make a grown adult feel nine years old again. The festival runs from November 27, 2026 through January 3, 2027. This season is expanded — opening before Thanksgiving weekend for the first time, adding nearly a full extra month to the run. Every ticket includes one ride on the landmark Centennial Ferris Wheel, which alone is worth showing up for: rising 200 feet above Lake Michigan in an enclosed, heated gondola while the Chicago skyline lights up behind you is the kind of moment that makes people quietly put their phones away. Inside, the event sprawls across multiple themed areas. There are rides sized for toddlers and rides that make teenagers nervous. An ice skating rink sits in the middle of it all, included with every admission pass. The holiday light displays are dense enough that you stop noticing where one installation ends and another begins — the whole room becomes one continuous glow. General admission is $27 online (purchased 24+ hours in advance) or $32 at the door. Children under 2 are free. The event closes on Christmas Day and is reserved for private groups November 30 through December 2. Opening daily at 10 AM with variable closing times — check navypier.org for your specific date. Navy Pier sits at 600 E Grand Avenue on Chicago's lakefront. Parking is available onsite but expensive; the CTA Red Line to Grand is a better move. If you are the kind of person who believes that a holiday tradition should feel like walking into someone else's best memory, Winter WonderFest is that room.

151st Westminster Kennel Club Dog Show 2027 — New York, NY
Every day · Next Feb 1 4 Pennsylvania Plaza, New York, NY…

The moment the judge points and the Garden erupts, you will feel a swell of pride for an animal you have never met, performing a discipline you do not fully understand, judged by criteria you could not articulate. That feeling is real. It is why Westminster has been running for 151 years. The 151st Westminster Kennel Club Dog Show returns to New York City on January 30 and February 1-2, 2027. Breed and group judging take place at the Javits Center during daytime sessions, while the marquee evening sessions — group judging and the Best in Show finale — return to Madison Square Garden on February 1 and 2. Over 2,500 champion dogs compete across seven groups, with the Junior Showmanship competition showcasing the next generation of handlers who are just as competitive as the dogs they present. The Tuesday night Best in Show broadcast is the most-watched event in the dog world, but being inside the Garden when the final seven dogs circle the ring is an entirely different experience. The crowd goes quiet in a way that 20,000 people in Manhattan almost never do. Then the judge points, and the place erupts. It is the only moment in competitive sport where the athlete has no idea they just won. The handler cries. The dog wags. The Garden roars. That sequence has played out every year since 1877 — the same building, the same quiet, the same explosion. Tickets for the Madison Square Garden evening sessions are available through Ticketmaster, with reserved two-night passes and single-night options available. Javits Center daytime events have separate ticketing through the Westminster Kennel Club website at westminsterkennelclub.org. Average ticket prices run $141 and up for the Garden sessions, though premium seats sell out months in advance. Westminster is the second-longest continuously held sporting event in the United States, behind only the Kentucky Derby. It predates the World Series, the modern Olympics, and every professional sports league in America. It is not a dog show — it is the dog show, the one that makes you look at your own mutt on the couch and think, you could never, but I love you anyway. The people who attend in person every year are not all dog owners or breeders. Many are simply people who love watching excellence expressed in a form that does not require understanding the rules to feel the magic in the room.

Anime Frontier 2026 — Fort Worth, TX
Dec 4, 2026 Fort Worth Convention Center, 1201…

There is a convention center in Fort Worth where, for three days every December, the cowboys and the cosplayers share the same sidewalk — and nobody blinks, because Texas has always been bigger than any one identity. Anime Frontier returns to the Fort Worth Convention Center December 4–6, 2026, for three days of premieres, panels, and special appearances from some of the biggest names in anime and manga. Presented by Crunchyroll, Anime Frontier has carved out a space that the East Coast cons like Anime NYC and Otakon and West Coast cons like Anime Expo do not cover — the entire middle of the country, where anime fandom runs just as deep but the nearest major convention used to be a 12-hour drive. The convention has grown rapidly since its launch, filling a geographic gap that the anime community had been complaining about for years. The exhibitor hall and artist alley bring together hundreds of vendors, from official merch drops to independent artists whose work you will only find at cons like this. The programming runs from industry panels and world premieres to cosplay showcases and community meetups, and the scale is big enough to feel like a real convention without the crushing density of a 100K-attendance mega-con. New for 2026 is a Kids Sunday ticket and a dedicated Family Zone presented by Scholastic — a signal that Anime Frontier is building for the next generation of fans, not just serving the current one. If you are an anime fan in Texas, Oklahoma, Arkansas, Louisiana, or anywhere in the central United States, Anime Frontier is the con that finally means you do not have to fly to a coast. If you are a veteran con-goer from either coast, Fort Worth offers something the big cons cannot — a manageable size, walkable downtown hotels and restaurants, and the Texas hospitality that makes out-of-towners want to come back every year. Tickets include single-day and 3-day badges, with Premium AF passes for extra access and perks. Ordering by October 23 gets your badge shipped before the event. Fort Worth in December is mild enough for outdoor cosplay without the summer heat that plagues most anime cons. The convention center is downtown, walkable to dozens of restaurants and bars, and the whole experience feels like a community gathering rather than a corporate expo. For the anime community in the middle of America, Anime Frontier is no longer the new con — it is the home con.

Art Basel Miami Beach 2026 — Miami Beach, FL
Dec 2 – Dec 7, 2026 Miami Beach Convention Center, 190…

You leave having seen things that will show up in auction records and retrospectives for the next decade - and you did not have to buy a single piece to be part of it. For one week in December, Miami Beach becomes the most concentrated gathering of contemporary art in the Western Hemisphere: 250 galleries from 30 countries, and a city that builds its entire social calendar around them. The main fair at the Convention Center is overwhelming in the best sense, with galleries from New York, London, Tokyo, and Sao Paulo competing for attention across a space that would hold several football fields. Wynwood's murals and the Design District's boutiques become satellite venues. Opening-night parties are invitation-only, but the energy of the week bleeds into every restaurant and hotel lobby in South Beach. This is not a quiet museum experience - it is a city in a specific, charged state of collective attention that happens once a year and then recedes. It is worth attending even with no intention of buying: the public programming includes talks, artist installations, and outdoor screenings, and the works you encounter at the main fair and at satellite shows like Untitled, NADA, and Scope are what the contemporary art world is actively debating in real time. If you care what art is doing right now, this is where you go to find out. Secure a hotel early - December in Miami Beach is peak season and fair proximity commands a premium. The main fair requires a ticket ($50-100 depending on day and time); many satellite fairs are free. RSVP to gallery openings in advance through their own websites, and book Design District restaurants weeks out. A car or rideshare is more flexible than the free shuttle. The main fair is most crowded on preview days (Wednesday and Thursday) and thinnest on Sunday, when collectors pack up their acquisitions. Miami absorbs the energy of the global art market and does not quite release it until January. December in Miami Beach.

Winterfest Boat Parade 2026 — Fort Lauderdale, FL
Dec 12, 2026 New River, 200 SW 2nd St, Fort Lau…

A hundred boats covered in a million lights, moving slowly down the Intracoastal Waterway, and every single one of them is someone's answer to the question 'what would you do if you had a boat and no limits on Christmas lights?' The Winterfest Boat Parade in Fort Lauderdale is one of the largest holiday spectacles in the country — a floating parade of absurdly decorated vessels reflecting off dark water while a quarter million people line twelve miles of waterfront in lawn chairs and flip-flops to watch something you cannot see anywhere else in the world. Some boats are elegant. Some are ridiculous. A few are both. All of them are someone's best effort at joy set to sea, and that is the entire point. The parade has been running for over fifty years, and the crowd that shows up along the New River and the Intracoastal is the kind that only happens when a city has been doing something long enough that it has become a family tradition — grandparents on folding chairs telling grandkids which boat won ten years ago while the grandkids are busy pointing at the one shaped like a giant candy cane. The route begins at the New River near the Stranahan House, one of the oldest surviving structures in Broward County, and winds north along the Intracoastal Waterway past bridges that go up one by one as the flotilla passes, each one a scheduled moment of spectacle that the crowd waits for. Viewing is free from any public waterfront spot along the route, and restaurants and bars along Las Olas and the Intracoastal host watch parties that sell out months in advance. The December weather in South Florida cooperates — seventy-five degrees at night, light breeze, the kind of evening that reminds you why people move to Florida and never go back. The best seats are the bridges themselves, which close to traffic and become elevated viewing platforms. New River waterfront, Fort Lauderdale, FL. December 12, 2026, 6:30 PM.

Dickens on the Strand 2026 — Galveston, TX
Dec 4, 2026 The Strand Historic District, 2100…

You have read the book. You have seen every adaptation. You have never walked through it. Galveston's Strand Historic District becomes Victorian London for one weekend every December — gas lamps flickering on cobblestones, carolers in top hats singing to nobody in particular, roasted chestnuts from a cart that has been in the same spot since before you were born, and costumes so committed that the century genuinely slips away underfoot. This is not a themed pop-up or a mall activation. This is a city that decided more than forty years ago to become a novel and has done it every December since, the way a church holds Christmas Eve — because it would not feel right to stop. Friday evening is free, Fezziwig's Friday, named for the only employer in fiction anyone would actually want to work for. Saturday and Sunday open the full festival with handmade goods from artisans who build things by hand the way they were built in 1843, festive holiday markets lining the historic iron-front buildings, street performers who could make Scrooge smile, and the kind of magic that exists precisely because nobody is trying to sell you anything except the feeling of being somewhere else, somewhere slower, somewhere that smells like clove and woodsmoke. The Strand district itself is the stage — a National Historic Landmark lined with Victorian iron-front commercial buildings that survived the Great Storm of 1900 and now host galleries, shops, and restaurants year-round. During Dickens weekend, every storefront becomes a character in the novel. Ticket holders get access to Saturday and Sunday events including live theatrical performances, roaming Dickensian characters, handbell choirs, brass bands on street corners, and a Victorian-era marketplace where the vendors are as much in costume as the crowd. Kids get their own Tiny Tim adventure zone. The food is period-correct where it can be and unapologetically Gulf Coast where it cannot — because this is still Texas, and nobody is giving up their shrimp po'boy for authenticity. The entire weekend is walkable, the architecture is real, the crowd is in character, and by Sunday afternoon you will catch yourself wondering why you ever stopped believing. The Strand Historic District, 2100 Strand St, Galveston, TX. December 4–6, 2026. Friday free, Saturday–Sunday ticketed.

Anime NYC 2027 — New York, NY
Aug 26, 2027 Jacob K. Javits Convention Center,…

New York went without a major anime convention for an embarrassingly long time given how many people there wanted one, and when it finally arrived it grew faster than almost any convention in American history. Anime NYC now fills the Javits Center on the far west side of Manhattan and has become the East Coast's largest anime event, with the industry treating it as a genuine announcement platform rather than a regional stop. What separates it from the older conventions is that it feels like it belongs to the city rather than to a hotel complex. Attendees spill into Hell's Kitchen and midtown between panels; the after-hours culture happens in restaurants and karaoke rooms rather than in hotel hallways. Inside, the industry presence is unusually heavy — Japanese publishers and studios send real delegations, there are manga creators doing signings who rarely leave Japan, and the concert programming has brought over acts that had never played the United States. The dealers hall is large and the artist alley is genuinely excellent, benefiting from the density of illustrators who already live within a train ride. Is it worth it? If you follow manga and the industry side of anime rather than only the shows, this is the best convention in the country for you, because the guests are the people who actually make it. If you want a warm, sprawling, all-night fan convention, the hotel-based cons in the Midwest and Maryland do that better — Javits closes and you go out into Manhattan, which is a different experience and an expensive one. What to know before you go: badges sell out, sometimes months ahead, and there is no walk-up. Javits is a long avenue walk from the nearest subway; budget the time. Late August in New York is hot and humid and the costume math should account for that. Ticketed signings are allocated by lottery — enter early. And eat outside the building; you are in one of the best food cities on earth. It earns a place here because the speed at which it grew is the clearest single piece of evidence about how large this audience actually became, and that is worth knowing even from across the country. Anime NYC 2027 runs August 26–29, 2027 at the Javits Center.

2027 Discover NHL Winter Classic - Avalanche at Utah Mammoth, Salt Lake City
Dec 31, 2026 Rice-Eccles Stadium, 451 1400 E, S…

Hockey was never meant to be played indoors. Every rink in North America is a compromise with the weather, an argument the sport lost and then monetized, and once a winter the league stops pretending. On New Year's Eve the Colorado Avalanche and the Utah Mammoth walk out of the tunnel at Rice-Eccles Stadium in Salt Lake City and play on a sheet of ice laid over a football field, under open sky, at four in the afternoon with the Wasatch Range going pink behind the upper deck. It is the first outdoor NHL game ever played in the state of Utah, and the first time the Mammoth - a team barely two seasons into having that name at all - gets handed the league's signature day. What the broadcast cannot carry is how strange the scale feels. A hockey rink is a small, loud, enclosed thing; drop it into the middle of a fifty-thousand-seat bowl and the players look like figures on a pond, which is precisely the point. The sound is wrong in the best way - no roof to trap the noise, so a goal goes up and keeps going instead of slamming back down on you. People arrive in parkas over sweaters over jerseys and spend the first period working out which layer was the mistake. The ice crew becomes a character in the afternoon; between periods you will watch them read a thermometer like a rosary. Is it worth it? If you are the kind of person who has ever stayed out in the cold longer than was sensible because the light was good and the company was better, yes, without qualification. It is not for anyone who wants the sport at its fastest - outdoor ice is slow, chippy and unpredictable, and purists file the same complaint every single year. It is for people who understand that the game is not the only thing being staged. You are buying a day, not sixty minutes of hockey. Know a few things first. Salt Lake sits near forty-seven hundred feet, the sun drops behind the mountains fast, and the temperature falls off a cliff the moment it does - dress for the third period, not the first. Rice-Eccles is on the University of Utah campus and runs on light rail far better than it runs on parking. And look for the cauldron: this stadium held the opening ceremony of the 2002 Winter Olympics, the torch still stands beside it, and the 2034 Games are already coming back here. That is the real reason this one lands where it does. The league could have put its outdoor showcase in any cold city with a stadium. It chose a town rebuilding its entire identity around winter sport, on the last night of the year, in a building that already watched the world turn up once. Puck drops at 4:00pm Mountain, 451 1400 E, Salt Lake City. Somewhere in that crowd a kid in a borrowed parka is going to decide this is their sport now - the way people did in 2002, in the same seats.

National Western Stock Show 2027 — Denver, CO
Jan 9, 2027 National Western Complex, 4655 Hum…

For sixteen days every January, Denver becomes the place where ranching is not an industry but a religion, and a hundred twenty thousand people show up because they already knew that. The National Western Stock Show is America's largest livestock exhibition — a sprawling, sixteen-day celebration of rodeo, livestock competition, and the culture that built the West, now in its 121st year. The arena holds championship rodeo every night with cowboys and cowgirls who have spent the entire year qualifying for this stage, riding broncs and roping calves in front of crowds that understand exactly what they are watching because half of them grew up doing it themselves. The exhibition halls hold cattle and horses bred by families who have been showing here for three and four generations, some of them driving their trailers through January snow from ranches so remote that Denver feels like Times Square. The food court holds things you cannot get anywhere else in the country this side of a county fair — lamb sliders from a rancher who knows the lamb's name, rattlesnake sausage, elk jerky, and a funnel cake the size of your head. And somewhere in the middle of all of it, a kid who has never touched a cow before reaches out and does, and that is the whole point. The kick-off parade winds through downtown Denver to open the show, horses clopping down 17th Street past office buildings, and by the time it reaches the Complex the streets already smell like hay and leather. The show is not a nostalgia act. It is a living industry gathering that also happens to be one of the best spectacles in American winter — livestock auctions where animals sell for six figures, a Mexican Rodeo Extravaganza, mutton bustin for kids too small to ride anything bigger, and a trade show where ranch technology meets the people who actually use it. The National Western Complex, 4655 Humboldt St, Denver, CO. January 9–24, 2027.

Katsucon 2027 — National Harbor, MD
Feb 12, 2027 Gaylord National Resort & Conventi…

There is a photograph you have seen without knowing where it came from: someone in an elaborate costume standing on a marble staircase under an eighteen-story glass atrium, winter light coming through, looking like a still from a film that was never made. That is Katsucon, and the building is most of the reason it has the reputation it does. Held every February at the Gaylord National Resort on the Potomac just outside Washington, it is among the most photographed anime conventions in the world, and the cosplay community treats a weekend there as something closer to a pilgrimage than a trip. The atrium is the event. Other conventions have panels and dealers and artist alleys, and Katsucon has those too, but what actually happens is that thousands of people spend three days building and wearing things they worked on since summer, and then the building gives them the best backdrop in North America to be seen in. Photographers book months ahead. There are impromptu gatherings by series on the staircases at all hours. Because the whole thing is under one roof and the weather outside is February in Maryland, the convention never really stops — the hallways at three in the morning are as busy as the floor at noon. Worth it? If you make things — sew, foam-smith, wig-style, prop-build — this is the room where that labor is understood without explanation, and there is no substitute for that. If you are coming to shop or to meet voice actors, other conventions do that better and cheaper. Katsucon is for the makers and the people who love watching them, and it is honest about that. First-timers who come without a costume routinely report it was still the best convention they had been to, because the spectacle is genuinely free to watch. What to know: the host hotel sells out almost immediately, and staying on-site is materially different from staying off — the atrium at night is the whole point. Budget for that. Bring a repair kit; something will break. The convention center portion and the hotel portion are connected but the walk is longer than it looks in costume. And Friday is the quiet day worth arriving for. It earns a place here because it is the clearest example in American fandom of a venue and a community finding each other perfectly, and because knowing it exists changes what you think a costume is for. Katsucon 2027 runs February 12–14, 2027 at the Gaylord National Resort & Convention Center, National Harbor, Maryland.

Mardi Gras New Orleans 2027 — New Orleans, LA
Feb 9 – Feb 16, 2027 0 French Quarter and parade routes, …

New Orleans lives for this. Fat Tuesday is the peak, but the buildup runs two weeks - parades rolling through neighborhoods, krewes throwing from floats, a city rehearsing the same ritual it has been rehearsing since before Louisiana was a state. The parades are not the background to Mardi Gras; they are the event. Krewes that have been parading since the 1850s roll elaborate floats through the streets for two weeks, throwing beads, doubloons, shoes, plush toys, and decorated cups to the crowds along the routes. The music does not stop - every bar on Frenchmen Street has a live band, the French Quarter is uninhabitable in the best possible sense, and Uptown, Mid-City, and Treme each have their own routes, their own crowds, their own relationship to the season. It is not one party; it is an entire city operating as a city-sized party for two weeks. Whether it is worth attending depends on which Mardi Gras you attend. The French Quarter on Fat Tuesday night is genuinely overwhelming and not for everyone. But the family-friendly neighborhood parades on the two weekends before - particularly Endymion, Bacchus, Orpheus, and Zulu - are accessible, joyful, and the reason locals are in their front yards with barbecue grills and ladders for the kids. If your image of Mardi Gras is beads and balconies, you can find that; if it is 200,000 people watching a parade route that has run for 140 years while a brass band plays from a truck behind the floats, that is also available, and it is the better version. Book accommodation 3-6 months in advance - New Orleans hotels during Mardi Gras are among the most in-demand in the country. Fly into MSY. The streetcar and walking are the most reliable transportation during peak parade days; driving is effectively impossible on parade routes. The best parades are in the days before Fat Tuesday, not on Fat Tuesday itself. Eat at local restaurants before 8pm, since popular spots fill. Rex and Zulu, Fat Tuesday morning and midday, are the signature daytime parades, and the Krewe of Barkus dog parade is Frenchmen Street distilled into one block. This is the rarest kind of event - a tradition that has survived, adapted, and grown more itself over 300 years in a single city. None of it was designed; it evolved where the culture was strong enough to hold it. Knowing which weekend to attend, which parades to watch, which neighborhoods to be in - that is the intelligence that turns a February flight to New Orleans from a trip into an experience. Mardi Gras 2027 takes place in New Orleans, LA.

X Games Aspen 2027
Jan 29, 2027 Spectator access historically free Buttermilk Mountain, 38700 CO-82, …

For three days at the end of January a mountain in Colorado becomes the only place in the world where the hardest tricks in snowboarding and skiing are attempted in public, at night, in front of a crowd standing in single-digit cold. X Games Aspen has run at Buttermilk Mountain for twenty-six consecutive years, and it is the event that decides what the next several winters of the sport will look like. What it is actually like is colder and louder than television suggests. The superpipe is twenty-two feet tall, and the scale of it only registers standing at the bottom - riders come out of the wall a full building's height above the deck, and the sound the crowd makes is not cheering so much as a collective involuntary noise. Big Air runs at night under floodlights with the mountain black behind it, which is the single best thing to watch in winter sport. Between drops there is music, and between events there are several thousand people in the strangest assortment of technical outerwear and thrift-store fur you will encounter anywhere. Is it worth it? If you follow the sport at all, this is the one. Nowhere else will you see every ranked rider in the same place trying things they would not risk at a World Cup, because the format rewards the attempt rather than the consistent run - which is exactly why the tricks that define a generation tend to land here first. If you do not follow the sport, go anyway for Big Air at night; it converts people. Where it is less for you: this is not a ski holiday. Competition days are long, standing, and cold, and the terrain you came to ride is busy. What to know before you go. Spectator access to the main venue has historically been free, which surprises people and is the single best-kept fact about it - the cost is getting to Aspen in late January, not getting in. Book lodging absurdly early or stay down-valley in Basalt or Carbondale and ride the free bus up; Aspen's rates in X Games week are what they sound like. Dress for standing still in the cold rather than for skiing, because you will not be moving. Evening sessions are the marquee ones. Buttermilk is the smallest of the four local mountains and the shuttle situation is the thing first-timers underestimate. It belongs on this list because it is one of the few American sporting events that is genuinely a culture rather than a fixture - a discipline inventing itself in public, on a deadline, with the whole sport watching. Buttermilk Mountain, Aspen, Colorado, the last weekend of January.

SXSW 2027 — Austin, TX
Mar 15 – Mar 21, 2027 Austin Convention Center, 500 E Ce…

If you have ever felt like the interesting version of American culture is happening somewhere you're not, this is the address it's happening at. For nine days every March, Austin becomes the one place where the music industry, the film industry, and the technology industry all arrive at once and go looking for the same parties. SXSW isn't a single event -- it's a city-sized festival. The Music Conference alone hosts thousands of acts across hundreds of venues, from dive bars and converted warehouses to the Austin Convention Center and the open air of Auditorium Shores. At the same time, the Film & TV Festival premieres features and series that go on to win Oscars and Emmys, and the Interactive and Emerging Technology conference hosts the conversations that decide how the industry thinks about what comes next. These three things happen simultaneously, in the same zip code, and the cross-pollination isn't incidental -- it is the product. The person who catches a breakthrough band at midnight, a groundbreaking documentary at noon, and stumbles into a startup pitch at 3pm isn't having three experiences. They're having the SXSW experience. The festival rewards whoever arrives with no fixed agenda and the flexibility to chase what's interesting, and punishes the over-planner who misses the spontaneous set that becomes the most-talked-about performance of the year. The unofficial parties and free shows matter as much as the official programming -- sometimes more. Austin in March is warm but unpredictable, so layers are essential and comfortable shoes are mandatory. SXSW runs on a badge system: the Platinum badge accesses everything, the Music badge covers all official showcases, and unofficial events run free and parallel across the city, often carrying the most interesting programming of all. Book accommodation six to twelve months out, because Austin fills completely. The Convention Center is the official hub, but the real SXSW happens on 6th Street, Red River, and along the South Congress corridor. SXSW 2027 earns its place among the country's essential cultural moments because it's the single event where American creative culture most fully takes stock of itself. The lineup hasn't been announced yet -- and the anticipation before the announcement is itself part of the ritual. Every year, artists, filmmakers, and technologists make their American debut here. Every year, something that started in a 200-capacity Austin venue becomes the story everyone's telling by April. This isn't just where culture happens -- it's where culture decides what it is. Austin spends the rest of the year as the city where those small rooms actually are, which is where the next one of these starts.

Ultra Music Festival 2027 — Miami, FL
Mar 26, 2027 Bayfront Park, 301 Biscayne Blvd, …

You have heard the drop a thousand times through earbuds on a train. You have never heard it through a wall of speakers facing the open water of Biscayne Bay while thirty thousand people make the same involuntary noise at the same time. That difference — between knowing a song and feeling it rearrange your chest cavity — is why Ultra exists and why it keeps filling a downtown Miami park every March. Ultra Music Festival returns to Bayfront Park for three days in late March 2027, and the thing that separates it from every other electronic music festival on earth is the setting. The main stage faces the bay. The Miami skyline rises behind the crowd. The transition from daylight to dark happens while the music is playing, so the whole visual register shifts without anyone announcing it. The afternoon acts play to sunshine and palm trees. The headliners play to a city that looks like it was engineered as their backdrop. The lineup will drop between December and January, and it will be the usual argument-starter — legacy acts who defined entire genres performing alongside rising names who are about to, and at least one booking that makes the Reddit thread go sideways within minutes. Ultra's curatorial identity has always leaned toward "the person you will be talking about in five years," and the proof is in the alumni list. Acts who played the mid-card stage at Ultra headlined Coachella eighteen months later. The festival does not chase the moment. It creates the next one. Three stages run simultaneously, which means the real experience is the walk between them — leaving one sound world, crossing a park, and entering another entirely. The bass from the main stage bleeds into the resistance tent. The ambient stage near the water sounds like a different planet. Biscayne Bay keeps the temperature human even at midnight. The food vendors have learned that this crowd eats at 11 PM and again at 2 AM. Tier 1 general admission three-day passes started at $359 and moved fast. Tier 2 is $419. VIP three-day starts at $1,797 and includes elevated viewing decks, private bars, and air-conditioned lounges that nobody actually stays in because the point is to be outside when the drop hits. General admission is 18+. VIP areas are 21+. Payment plans available for $49 down with equal monthly installments through January 2027. March 26 through 28, 2027. Bayfront Park, downtown Miami. The drop hits different when the whole city is the subwoofer.

New Orleans Jazz & Heritage Festival 2027 — New Orleans, LA
Apr 22 – May 2, 2027 Fair Grounds Race Course, 1751 Gen…

There is a version of American music that most of the country only knows secondhand - the brass bands, the gospel that leaves you undone, the traditional jazz that started all of it - and for two weekends every spring, all of it plays at once in the city that built it. The New Orleans Fair Grounds holds twelve stages simultaneously, so at any given hour on a Jazz Fest afternoon there are twelve choices, most of them extraordinary. The headliners close the evening, and Jazz Fest headliners have historically included the most celebrated artists of any era - but the afternoon is where the festival actually lives. The traditional jazz sets at the Jazz & Heritage Stage, the brass band second-lines threading through the food courts, the gospel tent on Sunday morning: these are not supporting acts. They are the event. The food is genuinely great by any standard - the crawfish bread, the cochon de lait, the pralines - and the fairgrounds feel like a city within a city, 70,000 people sharing the same remarkable afternoon. This is for anyone who has ever felt that American music deserves the same reverence other countries give their cultural heritage, for the person who knows New Orleans is the original source and wants to stand where it all came from. It is also for the person who never thought much about any of this and ends up in the gospel tent for three hours because they could not make themselves leave. New Orleans in late April is warm and occasionally rainy, so layers and rain gear are smart, and the Fair Grounds is standing-room, so comfortable shoes and sunscreen are mandatory. Hotels near the fairgrounds and in the French Quarter book months in advance; the Airbnb market near the fairgrounds is what most regulars prefer. Single-day and multi-day passes are both available. The drive from the airport takes 20 minutes, and rideshare is the standard arrival method. New Orleans exists as a cultural argument - that joy is worth preserving, that tradition is worth celebrating, that the past does not have to compete with the future - and the festival is that argument made annual and made real. Two weekends in late April and early May. Tickets available on AXS.

Gasparilla Pirate Festival 2027 — Tampa, FL
Jan 30, 2027 Bayshore Boulevard at Bay to Bay B…

Once a year the city of Tampa surrenders to a pirate who never existed. José Gaspar is a nineteenth-century invention, probably conjured by a real-estate promoter, and Tampa decided more than a century ago to hold an annual municipal celebration of him anyway. A fully rigged pirate ship sails up Hillsborough Bay, several hundred boats escort it, the mayor hands over the key to the city, and then roughly three hundred thousand people watch a four-and-a-half mile parade go north along the water. It has happened since 1904. It is the third-largest parade in the United States and most Americans have never heard of it. What it feels like is a city that has agreed, collectively and without irony, to be ridiculous for one day. The invasion in the morning is the part that photographs: the galleon coming in under sail with a flotilla behind it, cannon fire, and the whole of Bayshore Boulevard lined four deep. By early afternoon the parade itself takes over, and the thing that surprises first-timers is the scale of local investment in it. This is not a tourist spectacle performed at visitors. Over a hundred floats, dozens of krewes, marching bands, and generations of Tampa families with the same spot on the same stretch of seawall. Beads come down in volumes that have to be seen. Is it worth it? If you are the kind of person who collects the genuinely strange civic rituals of your own country, this is near the top of the list and it costs nothing to attend. It is not for anyone hoping for a quiet or dignified afternoon, and it is emphatically not a children's event in its main form, which is precisely why the city runs a separate, smaller Children's Gasparilla the previous Saturday. Things worth knowing: it is free, which makes the logistics the only real cost. Bayshore fills early and parking within walking distance is gone long before the two o'clock step-off, so locals take the streetcar or bike in. Bring sun protection even in January, and understand that Bayshore afterward is a genuinely enormous cleanup operation, so leaving early is not cowardice. The reason it belongs on a list of the country's best is simple. It is a hundred-and-twenty-year-old tradition built entirely on a fictional character, sustained by a mid-sized American city purely because it wants to, and it is bigger than almost anything comparable. Knowing it exists makes the map of your own country slightly stranger and better. Late January, on the water, in Tampa.

Mar 26, 2027 Seattle Convention Center, 705 Pik…

The oldest and largest anime convention in the Pacific Northwest was started by a group of college students in the mid-nineties, back when liking this at all required explaining yourself, and it is still run entirely by volunteers. That fact shapes everything about the weekend. Nobody is extracting margin from you. The programming is built by people who wanted it to exist rather than by a department, which is why the schedule is full of things no commercial convention would ever green-light. What that produces is a convention with an unusually high proportion of actual content — panels running past midnight, a serious concert program, a masquerade that people prepare for over months, and a video programming track that still shows things on a screen in a dark room to whoever wanders in. There is a formal ball. There is a chess tournament. The dealer hall is large but is not the center of gravity, which at an anime convention in the current era is genuinely unusual. The crowd skews younger than the older-guard conventions and the atmosphere is closer to a very large school event than to a trade show, in the best possible way. Worth it? If you want a convention where the programming rather than the shopping is the reason to be there, this is one of a handful left in the country, and it is the best of them on the West Coast outside of Los Angeles. If you are coming primarily for big-name industry announcements, the larger shows will serve you better. Sakura-Con is for people who want to spend three days inside the thing rather than adjacent to it. What to know before you go: registration opens early and the price ladder rewards buying well ahead. Late March in Seattle means rain, and the walk between the convention center and most hotels is short but unsheltered. The concerts are included with a badge and fill up, so line early for the ones you care about. Bring cash for artist alley. And the volunteer staff will genuinely help you if you ask, because they are attendees too. It belongs on this list because a thirty-year-old, volunteer-run, still-thriving convention is evidence that a community can build something durable without anyone monetizing it, and that is worth knowing exists. Sakura-Con 2027 runs March 26–28, 2027 at the Seattle Convention Center.

Awesome Con 2027 — Washington, DC
Apr 23, 2027 Walter E. Washington Convention Ce…

Washington takes itself extremely seriously fifty-one weekends a year, and once each spring several tens of thousands of people in costume take over its convention center and the effect is genuinely restorative. Awesome Con is the capital's pop culture convention, and its particular character comes from the city it happens in: there is a substantial science track built with the Smithsonian and NASA sitting directly alongside the comics and the film guests, and it does not feel bolted on. What that produces is a convention where a nine-year-old can go from a panel by an actual planetary scientist to a line for a voice actor without leaving the building, and where the crowd is noticeably more family-heavy and more racially mixed than most large cons. The Walter E. Washington Convention Center is enormous and easy to move around, which matters more than people expect — there is room to sit, room to eat, room for kids to melt down and recover. Artist alley is strong. The cosplay is competitive without being cliquish. And because it is April in Washington, the city outside is at its best; a lot of attendees build a weekend around the museums, which are free. Worth it? If you have children who are into any of this, it is one of the best large conventions in the country for that, and the science programming is a genuine differentiator rather than a marketing line. If you are a hardcore collector chasing exclusives, the bigger coastal shows have deeper inventory. Awesome Con is broad rather than deep, and that breadth is the point. What to know before you go: the convention center sits on top of a Metro station, so do not drive — parking downtown is punitive and the trains run late. Badges are cheaper in advance and children's pricing is generous. Saturday is by far the busiest day; Friday and Sunday are calmer and better for actually talking to artists. Bring a bag for prints. And if you are traveling in, the museums a few blocks away mean the non-convention hours are unusually well spent. It is on this list because a convention that treats curiosity and fandom as the same impulse is a rarer thing than it should be, and because a weekend where the most self-serious city in America lets go is worth knowing about. Awesome Con 2027 runs April 23–25, 2027 at the Walter E. Washington Convention Center.

Three days, one convention floor, and the crowd that traveled 400 miles to be in the same room as guests who shaped the shows they grew up on. Panels, artist alley, industry announcements, the con floor energy that only happens when this many people are this invested. The guest roster pulls from English and Japanese voice acting, manga artists, and industry figures who don't appear at US conventions often. Artist Alley is one of the larger ones on the East Coast circuit. The show floor runs exhibitors across the full range — merchandise, media, collectibles. Badges from $175. EDC Las Vegas 2027 — Las Vegas, NV
May 14, 2027 Las Vegas Motor Speedway, 7000 N L…

Electric Daisy Carnival is the largest electronic music festival in North America, held overnight at the Las Vegas Motor Speedway. For 2027 it expands to two consecutive weekends under a new structure — EDC Dusk on May 14 through 16 and EDC Dawn on May 21 through 23 — with a reduced daily capacity that regulars have wanted for years. The defining fact is that it runs at night. Gates open in the evening and the grounds stay live until roughly 5:30 in the morning, which means the emotional arc of an EDC night is nothing like a daytime festival. The exhausted, euphoric hour around 4 AM, when the sky over the speedway starts going grey and the last main-stage sets are still running, is the thing people actually come back for. The kinetic sculptures, the carnival rides running all night, the enormous owl over the main stage — it is deliberately overwhelming, and the crowd participates rather than watches. Strangers trade handmade beaded bracelets, a practice that started organically and never got corporate. Worth it? Honestly, it depends on whether you can sleep during the day in Las Vegas in May. That is the real filter, and people underestimate it badly. If you can, this is one of the genuinely singular experiences in American nightlife — a scale of production that no other festival on the continent attempts. If you cannot handle heat, crowds of 100,000, or being awake until sunrise for three consecutive nights, this will be a miserable and expensive weekend. There is no partial version of EDC. What to know: the speedway is a long way from the Strip and the shuttle is the only sane option — rideshare surge at 5 AM with 100,000 people leaving at once is the classic first-timer mistake. Camp EDC exists specifically to solve the commute and sells out. Hydration is not advice, it is the entire strategy; the desert at night is cold and the daytime hotel room is hot, and people routinely misjudge both. Bring a portable battery, because cell service on the grounds is historically poor and finding your group without a phone is genuinely difficult. EDC is on this list because it is the clearest example of an event that most people will never attend but that reorganizes how they imagine a night could go. The two-weekend expansion for 2027 is the first structural change in years, and it makes attending meaningfully easier than it has been. EDC Dusk: May 14 through 16, 2027. Friday gates open at 5 PM for the opening ceremony; Saturday and Sunday gates at 7 PM, with the grounds running until 5:30 AM.

MomoCon 2027 — Atlanta, GA
May 27, 2027 Georgia World Congress Center, 285…

A convention that started as a one-day free event on a college campus and grew into a four-day gathering of tens of thousands keeps something from that origin that money cannot buy: it is still noticeably run by people who are the audience. MomoCon happens each Memorial Day weekend at the Georgia World Congress Center in downtown Atlanta, and it covers anime, gaming, animation and comics with an unusually strong emphasis on the industry side of animation. The distinguishing feature is the volume of actual working professionals — animators, voice actors, studio staff — doing panels that are about how the work gets made rather than about promoting a release. Atlanta has become a genuine production city, and the convention benefits from that proximity. Alongside it sits one of the larger convention gaming setups in the country: a tabletop hall, a big freeplay arcade and console area, and esports tournaments running the whole weekend. Cosplay is central and the crowd skews young, energetic and heavily costumed. Memorial Day weekend means an extra day, and the extra day changes the pace considerably — there is time to do things properly rather than sprinting. Worth it? If you are interested in animation as a craft and a career, this is one of the best conventions in the country for that specific reason, and the access to working professionals is unusually good. If you are primarily a collector, the dealer hall is solid but not a destination. It is a maker's and a player's convention more than a buyer's. What to know: downtown Atlanta hotels connected to or near the convention center fill first and the walk matters in May humidity. The badge covers the gaming halls, which many first-timers do not realize until Sunday. Panels about breaking into animation fill up an hour early. Parking downtown is expensive; the MARTA station is close. And the four-day format means Thursday is genuinely worth arriving for. It is here because a convention where the people who make the thing talk honestly about making it is rarer than it should be, and knowing that room exists is useful whether or not you ever sit in it. MomoCon 2027 runs May 27–30, 2027 at the Georgia World Congress Center.

San Francisco Chinese New Year Parade 2027 — San Francisco, CA
Feb 20, 2027 2nd Street at Market Street, San F…

Almost every parade in America happens in daylight, which is why this one lodges in people's memory differently. San Francisco runs its Lunar New Year parade after dark, with the floats lit from inside, and it is one of the last illuminated night parades left on the continent. The effect is closer to a procession than a parade: a line of light moving through a downtown canyon, with a quarter of a million people on the pavement watching it come. It is the largest celebration of the Lunar New Year anywhere outside Asia, and it has been run by the city's Chinese Chamber of Commerce for decades, which matters to how it feels. This is not a civic body's idea of multicultural programming. It is a community's own event that the rest of the city was eventually invited to, and the difference shows in the details: the lion dance teams are from local schools and associations rather than booked entertainment, and the enormous golden dragon that closes the parade needs something like a hundred people to carry it. Firecrackers are set off along the route in quantities that will genuinely startle you if nobody warned you first. Consider yourself warned. Worth it? Yes, and specifically yes if you have only ever experienced Lunar New Year as a restaurant promotion or a social media graphic. Seeing a city of this size put its downtown core at the disposal of the holiday for a night rearranges your sense of what the holiday is. It is not for anyone who needs a calm evening or a guaranteed sightline, and small children find the firecrackers hard. Practical intelligence that is not obvious: the parade steps off from Second and Market, loops around Union Square, and finishes at Kearny and Columbus, so the start is far less crowded than the Chinatown end. Standing is free along the whole route and the organizer sells bleacher seats for people who want a guaranteed view, which sell out. Take BART or Muni, because downtown street closures make driving a genuinely bad decision. Go early, dress for a San Francisco February evening, which is colder than visitors ever believe. 2027 brings in the Year of the Ram. The twentieth of February, after sunset, downtown. The thing to understand is that it is not a performance of heritage for an audience; it is the actual event, and you are welcome at it.

Aug 5, 2027 Indiana Convention Center, 100 S C…

On a shelf in your house sit the games that only come out when the right people are in town, and the right people are almost never in town. That is the quiet arithmetic of being into this: the hobby is built for a full table and adult life keeps handing you three chairs and a Tuesday. For four days every August, one American city solves that completely, and the solution is so total it reorganizes how people think about the rest of their year. Running since 1968 and held in downtown Indianapolis since 2003, Gen Con has grown into the oldest and largest tabletop gaming convention in North America. It takes over the Indiana Convention Center, spills into Lucas Oil Stadium, and fills the connected hotels until the skywalks over the street are moving crowds at two in the morning. Roughly seventy thousand people come. It is the closest thing the hobby has to a homecoming. What it actually feels like is a city that has agreed, briefly and completely, to be about one thing. You walk into a hall the size of an airport terminal and every table in it has strangers sitting at it playing something. Open gaming runs essentially around the clock, which is the part that surprises first-timers most — at three in the morning there are still hundreds of people awake and mid-game, and joining a table requires nothing but asking. Designers demo their own unreleased games personally. The line you are standing in becomes a game. People who have played together online for nine years meet in person for the first time and it is visibly emotional. Is it worth it? If you have ever felt the specific frustration of loving something that requires other people to enjoy, yes, and it is not close. This is not a spectator convention where you look at things behind glass — you sit down and you play, constantly, for four days. It is not for someone looking for a relaxed vacation; it is loud, enormous, and physically demanding, and you will walk more than you expect. It is for the person who wants to be surrounded. What veterans know: the Exhibit Hall opens at 10 AM Thursday and the first hour is genuine chaos, because the new releases that everyone came for have limited print runs and the popular ones are gone before noon. Buy event tickets the moment registration opens; the good sessions sell out in minutes. Book a hotel on the skywalk system and thank yourself later. Gen Con 2027 runs August 5 through 8 at the Indiana Convention Center. The rest of the year, the same people are findable in a hundred smaller rooms.

Apr 19, 2027 Boylston Street Finish Line, Cople…

This is the only marathon in America you cannot simply sign up for - the runners on this course qualified for it, and the entire city knows it. Watching the Boston Marathon as a spectator is one of the great free sporting experiences in the country, and the veterans do not pick one spot. The course passes through eight cities and towns, so you can catch the race at multiple points. The Wellesley College Scream Tunnel at Mile 13 is legendary: thousands of students lining the course, the noise so intense runners can hear it a quarter-mile before they arrive. Heartbreak Hill at Miles 20-21 in Newton is where the race changes - where the field separates and the human drama becomes visible on people's faces. Boylston Street is where everything converges: runners who have been moving for hours, a crowd building since dawn, and a finish line carrying 130 years of the same morning. It is worth watching in person even if you have never run a mile in your life. The finish line on Boylston is, by consistent report, genuinely moving in a way that surprises people who show up expecting a casual sports afternoon; something about watching thousands of people reach the end of something they worked toward for months or years produces an emotional response that requires no prior investment in running. Drive nothing on marathon day - the MBTA is the only viable option. Take the commuter rail to Wellesley for the Scream Tunnel at Mile 13, then ride inbound to Kenmore Square to position near Mile 25; that lets you see the race at two points, which is the move veterans recommend. Build extra time into every transition, because road closures affect the entire city grid. Boston is one of the few events in American culture that is simultaneously an elite athletic competition and a democratic celebration - qualifying runners sharing the same road as first-time charity runners, the crowd making no distinction between them. The only thing the finish line measures is whether you showed up and kept moving. The Boston Marathon runs on Patriots' Day in Boston, MA, April 2027.

The Masters 2027 -- Augusta, GA
Apr 5 – Apr 11, 2027 Augusta National Golf Club, 2604 W…

You do not need to follow golf to feel it - people who have never watched a full round walk out of Augusta describing a garden with a tournament happening inside it. The Masters at Augusta National is one of the most beautiful sporting events on earth, and the traditions the club has protected for 90 years are visible in every detail. Walking the grounds on tournament days is a full-body experience built over decades of deliberate aesthetics: the grass is an almost impossible shade of green, and the azaleas, cultivated year-round to guarantee peak bloom during tournament week, frame every fairway in color. Only about 40,000 patrons are admitted per day, far fewer than comparable major events, so the grounds feel open, not crushed, and gallery applause rolls across the hills in waves. First-timers consistently describe the same thing: they expected a sports event and found a garden party with golf in it. Is it worth attending even for people who have never watched a round? Yes - the identity of the event transcends the sport. The course, the tradition, the controlled beauty of Augusta National in April do not require a scorecard, and if you are the kind of person who values craft, precision, and excellence in any domain, Amen Corner on Sunday afternoon is one of the most moving experiences in American sports. Tickets come through Augusta National's official lottery. The application window opens June 1-20, 2026 for the 2027 tournament, with results sent July 2026; tournament-day odds are roughly 1-in-200, and practice-round odds are meaningfully better. No phones are allowed during tournament rounds - Augusta National enforces this strictly, which is part of what makes the event feel different from anything else you will attend. Parking is free on-site, concessions are famously affordable by major-sports standards, and the move is to arrive early and walk the course before the crowds fill it. The green jacket represents something the rest of professional sports rarely produces: an outcome so shaped by a single course that it cannot be replicated anywhere else. Augusta National holds over 90 years of history in its fairways, and each April that history becomes a present-tense experience. This is the event that earns the word pilgrimage - and means it. 2027, Augusta, GA.

Newport Folk Festival 2027 — Newport, RI
Jul 23, 2027 Fort Adams State Park, 90 Fort Ada…

A handful of concerts in your life you cannot prove happened. Nobody filmed them, nothing got posted, and the only record is the several thousand people who were standing on the grass when it did. Almost nowhere is built to produce that any more. One place still is. Newport Folk Festival returns to Fort Adams State Park in Newport, Rhode Island on July 23 through 25, 2027 — three days on a peninsula in Narragansett Bay, inside the walls of a nineteenth-century coastal fort. This is where Bob Dylan plugged in an electric guitar in 1965 and split American music in half. That it is still running, still small, and still one of the hardest tickets in the country is the whole story. The setting does most of the work. Stages sit on grass with the harbor directly behind them; boats anchor offshore and people listen from the water. Because the site is physically constrained, the festival cannot grow, which has protected it from everything that happened to festivals elsewhere. The programming reflects that: folk here is a loose and generous word covering Americana, indie, gospel, country and whatever the artists feel like doing. The defining tradition is the unannounced guest — collaborations assembled on site, sets that appear on no schedule, and a house rule that what happens is not to be filmed and streamed. People who go talk about it afterwards in the tone of someone describing a rumour they can confirm. Worth it? For anyone who believes live music is supposed to be unrepeatable rather than reproducible, this is close to the top of the list in America. It is not for someone who wants to see a specific headliner — that is not what is being sold. You are buying the weekend, not the lineup. What to know: passes routinely sell out before a single artist is announced, so the calendar matters more than the poster. Fort Adams gets full sun and hard wind off the bay; bring a hat and a layer for both. Newport is a small resort town in high season, so lodging is booked far in advance and the ferry and shuttle are genuinely better ideas than driving. Weekdays before and after the festival are worth building into the trip. It is on the Nation's Best list because of what it refused. It stayed the size of its field, kept its no-stream rule, and let the surprise remain a surprise in an era that monetises exactly that. Knowing it is out there, every July, on a fort in a harbor, is worth something even to the people who will never get a ticket.

Bay to Breakers 2027 — San Francisco, CA
May 16, 2027 Howard St & Spear St, San Francisc…

Most cities never let you see them with their guard down. San Francisco does it once a year, starting at eight in the morning, and it has been doing it since 1912. Bay to Breakers is a 12K that runs from the bay side of the city straight across to the Pacific breakers at Ocean Beach, and it is the oldest consecutively held footrace in the country. Tens of thousands of people run, jog and walk it. Most of them are in costume. Almost nobody is trying to win. The start is a crush of jellyfish, brides, traffic cones and a school of people dressed as salmon, who by long tradition swim upstream against the direction of the entire race. Houses along the route open their front steps and put speakers in the windows. Bands set up on corners without anyone asking them to. The Hayes Street hill arrives early and quietly dismantles the pacing of anyone who trained on flat ground, and then the course tips down through the Panhandle and the length of Golden Gate Park until the air starts smelling like salt and you can hear the ocean before you can see it. Spectators outnumber runners and treat the whole thing as a block party that happens to have athletes moving through it. If what you want is a race, this is the wrong morning. Timing chips exist and the elite field at the front is genuinely fast, but the body of the event is a city being deliberately absurd for six hours, and fighting that is a way to have a bad time. If what you want is to watch a place you may never live in be unguardedly happy, there is nothing else on the American calendar quite like it. It is not for people who need a clean split or hate being touched by strangers. It is for anyone who has ever wished their own town would loosen up for one day. Dress for the temperature you want at mile four, not the one you feel at the start, or you will carry a jacket across the whole city. Work out how you are getting home before you set off, because transit afterwards is packed solid. Watch for the centipedes: thirteen runners tethered together in a line, a tradition begun in 1978 by a UC Davis track athlete named Dwayne Harms, and this race is now the official site of the World Centipede Running Championships. Stop at the open houses. That is the point of them. The costumes trace back to 1940, when one man crossed the finish line dressed as Captain Kidd and everyone decided that was the correct way to do this. A city that now mostly gets written about for its industry still keeps one morning a year for being ridiculous on purpose, which is a kind of civic confidence most places have lost. First wave goes at 8:00 AM and the last at 8:45, Sunday May 16, 2027, bay to ocean.

Lollapalooza 2027 — Chicago, IL
Jul 29, 2027 Grant Park, 337 E Randolph St, Chi…

A music festival in the middle of a downtown, with skyscrapers directly behind the stage, is a completely different object from one in a field. You are not escaping the city to see music. The city is standing there watching with you. Lollapalooza occupies Grant Park in Chicago every summer, and the 2027 edition opens Thursday, July 29. It began in 1991 as Perry Farrell's travelling alternative-rock caravan, died, and was resurrected in 2005 as a destination festival rooted in one park — which turned out to be the version that lasted. It now anchors a global family of Lollapaloozas across South America and Europe, but Grant Park is the original and the one the lineup is built for. The experience is defined by the skyline and the humidity. Chicago in late July is heavy, thunderstorms roll in off the lake with very little warning, and evacuations are a genuine part of the festival's history rather than a hypothetical. When the sun goes down and the buildings light up behind the main stage, it produces a specific feeling that no rural festival can manufacture — the sense of a city temporarily handing over its front lawn. Worth it? For a first large festival, this is the most forgiving option in America. It is walkable, it is on public transit, you can sleep in a real hotel bed, and if you need a break you are ten minutes from an air-conditioned building. That convenience is the whole pitch. It is not for someone seeking the immersive, off-grid, lose-your-phone kind of festival — Lollapalooza is emphatically in the world, not apart from it. What to know: the park is long and narrow, so the two main stages sit at opposite ends and the walk between them takes real time — plan for twenty minutes, not five. Free water refill stations exist and the lines are shorter than the bar lines. Storm evacuation is orderly and well-drilled; follow it and do not treat it as optional. Buying the four-day pass and skipping a day is normal behaviour, not waste. It earns a place here because it is the festival that proved a city could host one permanently, and because a skyline behind a stage is an image that stays with people who will never buy a ticket. Opens Thursday, July 29, 2027, in Grant Park.

Anime Central 2027 — Rosemont, IL
May 14, 2027 Donald E. Stephens Convention Cent…

Before anime was something you could explain at work, a few thousand people started meeting once a year in a suburb next to O'Hare airport to watch subtitled tapes and argue about them. Three decades on, Anime Central is the largest anime convention in the Midwest, still in Rosemont, still fundamentally shaped by having been built by fans rather than by a company. The thing that makes it distinctive is the hotel geography. The convention center connects by covered walkway to several large hotels, and because Rosemont is a small municipality that exists mostly to serve the airport, the convention effectively takes over the entire area for a weekend. That produces the phenomenon regulars talk about most: the con does not close. Room parties, hallway gatherings, impromptu dance circles, people in costume getting food at two in the morning at the same handful of restaurants. The formal programming is strong — a large dealers hall, a serious artist alley, concerts, a masquerade that people train for — but the actual memory people carry out is of the hours between the scheduled things. Worth it? If you want a large anime convention with a genuine all-night social culture, this is one of the best in the country and the walkway layout is a real structural advantage over conventions where you have to cross a city at midnight. If you want polished, corporate-run programming and major industry announcements, the coastal shows are bigger. ACen is scrappier and warmer. What to know before you go: book a connected hotel the moment rooms open, because being on the walkway versus off it changes the entire weekend. Rosemont has its own train stop on the blue line, so you can fly in and never rent a car. May in Chicago is unpredictable and the walkways mean you may never need a coat. Bring cash for artist alley. And the panel rooms fill fast for anything popular, so queue rather than wander. It is on this list because a thirty-year-old fan-built institution that still runs on its own social energy is a genuinely interesting thing to know exists, whether or not you ever fly to Illinois for it. Anime Central 2027 runs May 14–16, 2027 at the Donald E. Stephens Convention Center in Rosemont.

Dragon Con 2027 — Atlanta, GA
Sep 2, 2027 Atlanta Marriott Marquis, 265 Peac…

Most conventions rent a building. This one takes a city. Over Labor Day weekend the entire hotel district of downtown Atlanta is absorbed — five host hotels connected by skybridges, tens of thousands of people moving between them at all hours, and a parade down Peachtree Street that closes the road and draws crowds who are not attending at all. Dragon Con is the closest thing American fandom has to a carnival, and the distinction from a trade show is not cosmetic. Because it is spread across hotels rather than a convention center, the event never has a closing time. Programming runs past three in the morning. There are more than forty separate fan tracks, which means the schedule includes serious literary panels, a robotics track, a puppetry track, several music stages and an entire independent film festival, all running simultaneously. The costuming is on a different level from other conventions — people build for a year — and the skybridges function as continuous informal runways where that work gets seen. It is also famously a drinking convention with a well-developed late-night culture, which is either the appeal or the warning depending on who you are. Worth it? If you want the most all-encompassing and least corporate large fandom experience in the country, there is nothing else like it and the scale genuinely surprises people. If you want a quiet, structured weekend or you are bringing small children, this is the wrong one — it is loud, crowded, and does not sleep. The honest summary is that Dragon Con is a festival that happens to be about fandom rather than a convention with a party attached. What to know: host hotel rooms are gone roughly a year in advance and staying on the skybridge network versus off it is the single biggest variable in your weekend. Atlanta in September is hot. The parade is Saturday morning and worth setting an alarm for even if you are not in it. Buy your badge early — the price ladder is steep. And accept that you will miss most of what you wanted to see; everyone does. It is on this list because a fandom that builds an entire temporary city once a year is a genuine American cultural phenomenon, and knowing it happens changes your sense of the scale of this thing. Dragon Con 2027 begins September 2, 2027 across downtown Atlanta.

EAA AirVenture Oshkosh 2027 - Oshkosh, WI
Jul 26, 2027 Wittman Regional Airport, 525 W 20…

For one week every summer a regional airport in Wisconsin becomes the busiest airport in the world, and the control tower stops using callsigns because there is no time for them. Controllers talk to pilots by the colour of their aircraft instead. Rock your wings if you copy. EAA AirVenture gets described as an airshow, which undersells it to the point of inaccuracy. It is closer to a temporary city of aviation people, roughly 600,000 of them, who fly in from everywhere and then camp underneath the wings of the aircraft they arrived in. Around ten thousand planes come. They park in rows on the grass sorted by type, so you walk past a field of homebuilts and then a field of warbirds and then a field of 1940s taildraggers whose owners are sitting in lawn chairs beside them, visibly waiting to be asked about it. That last part is what people miss. There is no velvet rope anywhere on the field. The man restoring a P-51 will talk to you for forty minutes if you ask one honest question, and the whole convention runs on exactly that transaction. Friendships and more than a few careers have started at a folding chair beside somebody's airplane. Practical things worth knowing: it is hot, it is flat, and it is enormous, so the people who enjoy it most are the ones who accept early that they will not see all of it. Camping in the North 40 among the arriving aircraft is the real experience and fills up far in advance. The afternoon airshow runs daily regardless of what else is happening, and the night airshow, which closes with pyrotechnics fired from aerobatic aircraft trailing fire, is the one veterans tell first-timers not to skip under any circumstances. Bring ear protection you would actually wear, because warbird departures are not loud in the way a concert is loud. The arrival procedure has become folklore in its own right. Pilots flying in follow a railroad line to a town called Ripon and then on to Fisk, flying a published approach while making no radio calls of their own, simply being spoken to from the ground. There are people who train all year to do this once, and who talk about it afterward the way other people talk about a pilgrimage. Most readers will never set an aircraft down on a coloured dot on a Wisconsin runway while someone in a lawn chair tells them which one. Knowing that it happens every July is a slightly larger life than not knowing.
