Dolby Theatre, 6801 Hollywood Blvd…
You were maybe twelve, it was late, and you had gotten to the part where the music changes and the screen goes quiet, and you sat there with a controller in your hands feeling something you did not have words for yet. Thirty years later you still do not have the words. You do still have the melody.
The 30th anniversary concert that ran in Japan this January comes to Hollywood for one night, conducted by Nicholas Buc, with a full orchestra playing Yasunori Mitsuda's score the way it was always arranged in your head but never actually sounded through a console speaker. Chrono Trigger is the game people cite when they argue that the form can do what a novel does, and its soundtrack is the evidence they reach for first.
What makes the room worth it rather than the recording: you will be surrounded by several thousand people who all went quiet at the same moment in the same game, alone, decades ago, in different bedrooms. When the first notes of a particular theme land, you will hear the entire theatre react at once. That sound — the collective recognition — is not on any soundtrack.
Sunday, October 18, 8 p.m. Dolby Theatre, 6801 Hollywood Blvd. No recording of any kind permitted.

You feel the kick drum before you hear it. That is what a proper theatre does to live sound and what an arena never manages — the room is small enough that the low end reaches your chest instead of dissolving into a concrete bowl, and the people around you are close enough that their reactions become part of the mix. Dolby Theatre in Hollywood is built for exactly that kind of listening: a room designed for occasions rather than for volume, where the sound engineer is not fighting the architecture. Everyone in it is doing the same thing at the same time, which is the oldest reason there is to leave the house. All ages, on a November evening in Hollywood. The people who were there will describe it differently than anyone who only heard about it later, and that difference is what you are actually buying. Bring the person you always want beside you when the lights go down.

By the third week of December the city has already spent a month trying to make you feel something. The lights went up in November. The ache that shows up anyway — the one that wants December to mean more than errands before it runs out — has a two o'clock matinee waiting for it. Los Angeles Ballet dances its Nutcracker downtown with a live orchestra in the pit rather than a recording, which is rarer in this city than it should be and is the whole difference in the snow scene. The thing worth knowing is that the Dolby run is the back half of a tour: the company opens the production at Royce Hall on the UCLA campus in mid-December, plays four performances there, then moves to Hollywood Boulevard for the holiday stretch. The dancers who walk onto the Dolby stage have already lived inside the piece for a weekend, and it shows in the second act — the party scene is looser, the Sugar Plum variation is steadier. Matinees at 2, evenings at 7:30, December 22 through 24.

For one night the boulevard stops belonging to tourists and belongs entirely to the movies. Traffic gone. Barricades up. Four blocks of Hollywood under the attention of most of the planet at once.
People forget the ceremony has an outside. The fan zone along the carpet approach is a real thing you can stand in — registered spectators watch the arrivals from designated areas, and registration opens on the Academy's site weeks ahead and fills within hours. The street shuts to through traffic that morning, the Dolby's entrance becomes the carpet, and the surrounding blocks turn into perimeter and infrastructure. The whole neighborhood takes on the particular charge of a night the world is watching your city block.
Downtown Hollywood, Metro to Hollywood and Highland, free to observe from the public areas outside the perimeter.
Go with the person who has a strong opinion about every Best Picture winner of their lifetime.

Shinzo wo Sasageyo. If reading that raised something in your chest, you already know why this matters, and you can stop reading right here.
For everyone else: this score did an enormous amount of the emotional work in a story about impossible choices, and until now there has never been an officially licensed orchestral performance of it anywhere on earth. Hiroyuki Sawano and Kohta Yamamoto curated new symphonic arrangements for more than a hundred musicians and a full choir, with the series projected on a giant screen behind them, so the whole arc runs while the music that scored it fills a real room instead of your headphones.
There is a particular thing that happens when a live choir comes in on music you have only ever heard compressed through earbuds at one in the morning. It is not subtle.
Hollywood, a proper theater, one night only.
Dedicated to the hearts. Bring the person you watched the last season with — the one who still refuses to discuss the ending.

The first piano notes land and a theater full of strangers stops breathing at the same instant, because every one of them carried this story home years ago and never quite put it down.
This is the officially licensed orchestral concert, with new symphonic arrangements curated by the original composers, Hiroyuki Sawano and Kohta Yamamoto, played by more than a hundred musicians and a choir while projection scales the series up to the size it always deserved. Shinzo wo Sasageyo in a room like that stops being a song. It is a full theater offering up its hearts for a freedom none of them were ever sure existed, out loud, most of them in a language they do not speak.
The Dolby Theatre in Hollywood, with tickets through Ticketmaster. If you have been waiting for the day this music became something you could stand inside, it is finally on a calendar.

Dolby Theatre, 6801 Hollywood Blvd, Hollywood, CA. June 5th, 2026. Summer Game Fest takes the building where the Oscars happen and fills it with the games industry's mid-year announcement moment. Every major publisher and many independent studios use this event to release trailers, gameplay reveals, and release date announcements to a room that is simultaneously the most attentive gaming audience in the world.
SGF is where the E3-shaped hole in the gaming calendar now lives. The show streams globally, but the audience in the Dolby Theatre experiences the announcements before the internet processes them — the reactions happen in real time, with the people around you, before the takes arrive. A trailer reveal in that room is the announcement, not the broadcast of it.
If you're in the industry, this is the room where the year's games landscape becomes visible. If you follow gaming closely, attending in person is the experience that the stream approximates but doesn't replicate. summergamefest.com for registration options and the associated public events that run throughout the June 5th-6th window in Hollywood. The conversation that happens in the hours after the show is part of it.

Dolby Theatre, 6801 Hollywood Blvd, Hollywood. May 27th. De Yun She's 2026 World Tour 30th Anniversary — three decades of cross-talk performance, the traditional Chinese performance art that combines rapid-fire dialogue, wordplay, and comedic timing at the Dolby Theatre in Hollywood.
De Yun She is the Beijing cross-talk troupe that has brought xiansheng — the traditional two-person comedic dialogue form — to arenas and theaters for thirty years. The anniversary tour lands at the Dolby Theatre, which is one of the grandest performing arts venues in Los Angeles, and the juxtaposition of a traditional Chinese art form in the building that holds the Oscars is its own kind of statement.
Tickets at ticketmaster.com. May 27th. The Chinese community in Los Angeles has been following De Yun She for decades, and the 30th anniversary is the occasion the troupe has been building toward. The Dolby is sold out for similar events — book early. Cross-talk rewards knowing the references, but the timing and the commitment to the form is legible without the cultural context. This is performance at the highest level of a tradition that goes back centuries.

A theater screen makes a different argument for a film than a laptop — Dolby Theatre in Hollywood on April 12, 2026 is where that argument gets made properly. PaleyFest LA: The Pitt screens at Dolby Theatre, Hollywood, on April 12, 2026. The people who experience a film in a theater carry a different relationship to it than the ones who watched it at home.

Anyone who trained seriously at something as a child and then had to stop knows the particular grief of a body that was built for one purpose and then released from it. Whittet was a ballet dancer until an injury ended it, and she has spent two books now writing about what the discipline does to a person - the obedience, the pain tolerance taught as virtue, the way beauty gets extracted from young women who are not asked. The new one takes the title from the illuminated devotional books, which is the right frame: the daily practice, the hours kept whether or not anyone is watching. Seley joins her. The audience for this at a West Hollywood bookstore is reliably interesting - dancers, former dancers, and people who did gymnastics or music or anything else that demanded everything at twelve years old. Free, Thursday at seven, thirty chairs between shelves. Sit near the front; she reads quietly and does not reach for the microphone.

Loving a game nobody around you plays is a specific kind of lonely. You have four hundred hours in it, you know the soundtrack better than most albums you own, and the people who would understand are all on a Discord server in other time zones. Then a tour announces a North American stop and the server becomes a group of people you can actually stand next to. This is that night. The score for this game is genuinely orchestral - recorded with real ensembles, not a synth patch pretending - and hearing it played live in a two-thousand-seat theater is the closest the medium gets to a symphony hall treating it seriously. Cosplay will be everywhere and nobody will find it remarkable. If you have somebody in your life who has tried to explain this game to you and given up, this is the night to just go with them. This is the North American debut of the tour, which has otherwise only played Asia. Doors well before the eight o'clock downbeat on Saturday the 17th.

The same stretch of pavement that carries the red carpet in spring gets marching bands and convertibles on the Sunday after Thanksgiving, and it has been doing so since before most of the studios along it existed.
What separates this from every other holiday parade is that the entertainment industry showing up is not a booking — it is the neighborhood. Grand Marshals, celebrities on floats, high school bands bused in from across the state, themed builds rolling west along the boulevard before turning south, the whole route laid directly over the Walk of Fame. Half a million people watch from the curb and many more from a couch.
Grandstand seats sell; behind them the curb is free. The Metro is the only sane way in, since parking near the route barely exists, and the free viewing rewards anyone willing to turn up hours early with a thermos.
Bring the kid who has only ever seen a parade on television. Stand them right where the bands turn the corner.

Simeon ten Holt wrote a piece with no fixed length. The players decide in the room how many times to repeat each section and when to move on, so Canto Ostinato can run ninety minutes or five hours and no two performances share a shape, because the musicians are listening to the audience as closely as to each other. Four of them here, two pianos and two sets of mallets, inside a former Scottish Rite Masonic temple on Wilshire with Tacita Dean's FILM running through the space: a silent 35mm work made for a vertical screen, all grain and hand-worked frames, the opposite of a projection you can let slide past you. Repetition is the only thing either artist asks of you, and both of them mean it kindly. Tickets surface roughly a month ahead through the series and the museum. Marciano Art Foundation, 4357 Wilshire Blvd, on December 7 and again on the 14th.

Near the end of the movie, Sam stands on the observation deck of the Empire State Building and the camera holds on his face for three full seconds before Meg Ryan appears. In those three seconds, the orchestra carries everything the character cannot say. You've heard it through speakers a dozen times. You've never heard it performed by a live symphony while the film plays on a screen overlooking the San Diego bay.
The San Diego Symphony performs the complete score of Sleepless in Seattle at The Rady Shell at Jacobs Park — Marc Shaiman's arrangements, the Nat King Cole needle-drops, the Jimmy Durante moment that lands harder than it has any right to. The orchestra sits between you and the screen, and the score exists in the room as a physical thing, vibrating in the air, rather than a signal compressed into a speaker. Every romantic movie you've ever watched alone on a couch prepared you for exactly this feeling, and none of them prepared you for how different it is when you can see the violinist's face.
One performance only: Friday, December 11, 2026 at 7:30 PM. The Rady Shell at Jacobs Park, 1245 Seventh Ave, San Diego. Tickets via the San Diego Symphony box office.

You already know the ending. You've seen Kevin outrun the Sticky Bandits a hundred times. You've memorized the face he makes at the concierge, the Plaza Hotel lobby, the way the pigeon lady turns out to be the bravest person in the whole movie. None of that matters, because you've never heard John Williams' score performed live twenty feet from your chair while the film plays on a screen the size of a building.
The San Diego Symphony performs the complete Home Alone 2 score at The Rady Shell at Jacobs Park — outdoors, under the December sky, with the bay behind you and Williams' orchestral arrangements filling the kind of open air they were always meant to fill. The brass hits different when there's no ceiling. The strings hit different when you can see the cellist's bow. The moment Kevin walks through a snowy Central Park and the full orchestra swells beneath it — that's the moment you understand why people keep coming back to this format. You already knew the movie. You didn't know the music.
This is a holiday tradition built for the person who watches Christmas movies year-round and the person dragged along by them. Both leave converted. One night only: Saturday, December 12, 2026 at 6:00 PM. The Rady Shell at Jacobs Park, 1245 Seventh Ave, San Diego.
