Before reggae there was rocksteady, that impossibly sweet, slow-swaying sound of late-60s Jamaica, and Keith and Tex are among its last living legends, the duo behind Stop That Train and Tonight, harmonies that have soundtracked romance for sixty years. Hearing them in person, backed by the Dub Club sound system and joined by Keith Poppin, is a genuine piece of living history, a December night for the connoisseurs who know exactly how rare this is. Saturday, December 19, 2026, 9 PM, the Echoplex in Echo Park, 21+. Come for the vintage harmonies, the deep bass, the sound-system faithful, and a slow skank with someone you love. Bring the friend who collects vinyl. This is the back-of-the-store treasure LA's reggae underground has been guarding since 2000. Rocksteady forever.

Some voices carry the whole history of a genre in them, and Clinton Fearon's is one: the former bassist and singer of the Gladiators, a living link to the golden age of roots reggae, still touring with a warmth and message that stops rooms cold. When he brings the Boogie Brown Band to LA's long-running Dub Club, it's a rare chance to hear real, deep, conscious roots reggae from a master, in the sweaty, bass-heavy Echoplex where the city's reggae faithful gather. Friday, September 4, 2026, 9 PM, the Echoplex in Echo Park, 21+. Come for the sound-system culture, the outdoor bleachers, the skanking crowd, and a legend who still means every word. Bring someone who needs their spirit lifted. This is roots reggae the way it's meant to be felt, in a hidden room that has kept the flame lit for 25 years.

Down a ramp beneath Echo Park, a sound system has been shaking the walls every week since the year 2000, and Dub Club remains the beating heart of LA's reggae underground, a room where the bass is felt in the sternum and the crowd knows every riddim by heart. This night brings Jah9, the Jamaican singer whose jazz-inflected, deeply spiritual roots music has made her one of the most revered voices of the new reggae generation, with Rik Jam and the Dub Club DJs holding it down. Wednesday, August 19, 2026, 9 PM, the Echoplex in Echo Park, 21+. Come for the sound-system culture done exactly right, the outdoor bleachers, the deep vibes, and a crowd that treats this as church. Bring the friend who lives for bass. This is the good, hidden LA that tourists never find.

A rock band that is also a circus, a seance and a sea shanty, and refuses to pick one, should not work. Honus Honus has spent two decades demonstrating otherwise.
Drums assembled out of trash cans. Gang vocals about heartbreak, bellowed by people in costumes nobody requested and everybody is glad about. The Echoplex is the correct room for this: down the alley entrance off Glendale, below the Echo, capacity in the hundreds, sweat coming off the ceiling by the third song. They are out behind a new record most of the world has not heard yet, and the catalog faithful are the entire room, which means the new songs get received rather than tolerated.
Echo Park on a Saturday night, doors early, an opener first, cheap at the door.
Bring the friend who is always down for the weird thing. You owe them one, and this settles it.
While you are lookingDifferent scene, same night out.

Every quiet-storm radio block since 1987 owes Keith Sweat a royalty check. He didn't just sing New Jack Swing -- he helped invent the whole sound of begging beautifully, the pleading tenor that runs from 'Make It Last Forever' straight through 'Nobody' and 'Twisted.' A Keith Sweat show is a specific kind of grown-and-sexy church service, the room split evenly between people who were there the first time and people whose parents were. Pechanga sets it on a Thursday night in October, a short valley drive that lands you somewhere between a slow jam and a full-on singalong. Come dressed like you mean it. Bring the person these songs remind you of -- or the group chat that still quotes them. Nobody, and I do mean nobody, does it quite like him.

Every country has the band that scored everybody's first heartbreak, and for a huge number of people in this city that band sang in Spanish and had a piano intro you would recognise in two notes. Mexican rock from the late nineties and early two-thousands occupies a strange position here: enormous to the people it belongs to, close to invisible in English-language music writing, which means a show like this never shows up in the listings you read. Elefante are one of the acts that carried that sound, and the reason to see them seated in a theater rather than at a festival is that these are songs people sing rather than dance to - the room becomes a choir about a third of the way in. Bring the sibling who still has the CD. They came out of Mexico City in the late nineties and their run of ballads is the part the room will carry without help from the stage. Saturday the 10th, doors before an eight o'clock start.

Watching one person build a song in real time out of loops, without it collapsing, is a specific kind of tension that recordings cannot reproduce — every layer has to land or the whole thing falls apart in front of everybody. That is the entire premise here: a Texas musician surrounded by hardware, constructing bright, propulsive instrumental pop live rather than triggering it. The songs are melodic enough to work as pop and repetitive enough to work as dance music, which is a narrow place to stand. He has been doing it long enough that the failures no longer happen and the crowd has stopped expecting them. Highland Park's upstairs hall has the ceiling and the floor for it. Music at 8:00 PM at 104 N Avenue 56, a Saturday. Live-looping shows draw the people who make music themselves, and that crowd asks better questions afterward.

Some records are too quiet to survive a crowded room. You put one on low at two in the morning and it becomes the most private thing you own, and then you never play it for anybody, because you would have to explain it and the explaining would ruin it.
This is one of those, made in Bristol out of dub space, loose jazz and a voice kept barely above speaking. It falls apart in a big venue and comes properly alive in a small one, which is the entire case for catching it at a converted bar on El Cajon Boulevard where the ceiling sits low enough that the quiet passages actually stay quiet.
People will stand very still. Somebody will shush somebody else and will be completely right to do it.
This is for the one person you would trust with the record.

Somewhere in this city tonight there is a back room where the pinball never stopped — machines everyone assumed died with the arcades, lined up, lit up, and played for blood by people who know each ruleset cold. You thought it was nostalgia. They kept it a sport.
Once a month the league runs a real tournament: matchplay, a new opponent and a random machine every round, points stacking across the night. It is IFPA-sanctioned, but that is not why the regulars come. A good table is the most honest machine there is. It does not care who you are, only whether you can read the ball.
Here is what outsiders never expect: this crowd wants you to get good. Show up knowing only how to keep a ball alive and someone ranked will lean over between rounds and show you where the safe nudge is, when to let it drain on purpose.
Venues rotate. Check the league's Facebook group and the IFPA calendar for this month's location. All-ages at most stops, 21+ at the bars.

Every region sends its dark horses, and most of them go home in the first week. That is what makes the opening stage the most nervous, least predictable stretch of the whole tournament.
The Play-In Stage is where teams that did not walk in with a guaranteed bracket spot have to earn one, on foreign soil, against opponents they have only ever studied on video. Nothing is safe and nobody is comfortable. Upsets that reshape the entire championship happen here, in front of a few hundred people, before the broadcast audience has fully tuned in.
Riot Games Arena is the tightest, loudest room in North American esports — small enough that crowd noise reaches the stage, close enough to watch a player's posture change when a fight goes wrong. From inside that building it is a different sport.
Riot Games Arena, 12181 Bluff Creek Dr, Playa Vista. October 15-18. Tickets through lolesports.com.
If you have only ever watched it on stream, this is the one to go to.
