Two acoustic guitars. No band, no backing track, no click. And somehow the room moves harder than it does for acts that haul in a truck of gear.
What the records cannot give you is what their right hands are doing. The percussion is played on the body of the guitar, at speed, while the melody keeps running underneath it, and watching that happen a few feet away rearranges your sense of what one instrument can hold. The crowd figures this out almost immediately and then stops talking entirely, which almost never happens in a club this size. Six hundred people is the last size at which a performance this technical still feels like it is happening to you personally instead of at you.
Solana Beach, at the Belly Up, tickets through the club.
Take the friend who plays a little and has gotten discouraged about it. This will either ruin them or fix them.

The voice is older now, weathered down from the banshee wail that once rode over Led Zeppelin's thunder — and somehow that makes it land deeper. What Robert Plant is chasing these days is quieter and stranger: Saving Grace, a band steeped in Appalachian gospel, English folk, and desert blues, trading arena bombast for something closer to a seance. Under the open sky at Humphreys, with the boats knocking gently in the marina and the bay air coming off the water, that hushed, haunted sound has room to breathe. He could coast on the old catalog forever; instead he keeps walking toward the unfamiliar, and asking you to follow. Suzi Dian shares the vocals, Rosie Flores opens. For anyone who ever wore out a Zeppelin record, this is not nostalgia — it is watching a restless artist still refuse to stand still at seventy-eight. Monday, September 28, 2026, 7:30pm, Humphreys Concerts by the Bay. Go witness what a legend does when he has nothing left to prove and keeps searching anyway.

The blues is an inheritance, passed hand to hand, and on this stage you get two generations of it at once. Taj Mahal is a living root of American music — six decades of reinventing the form, Grammy shelves groaning, a walking encyclopedia of where these songs came from. Keb' Mo' is the smooth, modern heir, all warmth and craft. Together, as TajMo, they trade verses and grins like family at a reunion, and the whole thing feels less like a concert than a front-porch session that happens to have a few thousand chairs. Under the stars at Humphreys, with the water lapping and the night warm, that easy, joyful, deeply rooted sound is exactly where it belongs. Friday, September 11, 2026, 7:30pm, Shelter Island. Come let two masters remind you that the blues, done right, is not sad at all — it is the sound of surviving with your sense of humor intact.

Everyone who was a certain age in the late 2000s has a version of the same memory: a string section swelling, Mikel Jollett half-singing half-confessing about a girl and a bad night, and the specific feeling of a heartbreak that felt like the end of the world and secretly kind of thrilling. That is what The Airborne Toxic Event does — literary, orchestral, unashamedly dramatic rock for people who feel things at full volume. Under the open sky at Humphreys, with a full band and strings and the bay behind them, songs like Sometime Around Midnight stop being nostalgia and become the catharsis they were built to be. This is a room full of people who will know every word and are not embarrassed to mean them. Saturday, September 12, 2026, 7:30pm, on Shelter Island. Come feel twenty-three again, in the best and most bittersweet way, with a few thousand people who never stopped playing that record.

The audience sits ten feet from the water, the stage throws the sound out toward the bay, and the bay hands back a warmth no inland venue can manufacture - Humphreys is 1,400 seats on a waterfront, and on a July night it turns a concert into a specific version of a San Diego summer evening made complete. Put Michael McDonald's voice into that air - one of the most distinctive instruments in popular music - and the night stops being a show and becomes a place. 'What a Fool Believes.' 'Takin' It to the Streets.' 'I Keep Forgettin'.' The Doobie Brothers catalog alongside the solo work and the Steely Dan recordings, all live, waterside. The reserved seating at Humphreys is close enough to matter. Humphreys Concerts by the Bay, 2241 Shelter Island Dr, San Diego. July 12th. See humphreysconcerts.com for availability.

Humphreys holds 1,400 people. That means you are fourteen rows from the stage when Cheap Trick opens with I Want You to Want Me, and the sound hits the water behind you and comes back doubled. April 24, Shelter Island. Surrender. Dream Police. The Flame. Cheap Trick invented power pop and they still play it like they have something to prove. At this venue, at this scale, this is one of the best concerts San Diego will see all year.

DEVO never played it straight, not once in forty-five years, and they're not about to start. Humphreys by the Bay on April 15 — one of San Diego's most beloved outdoor venues, right on Shelter Island, with the harbor behind the stage and a crowd that remembers when Whip It was a revelation. The Mutate Don't Stagnate tour is exactly what it sounds like: a band that refuses to become a museum piece, playing the catalog that earned them that right.

Jakob Dylan has spent 30 years making sure The Wallflowers are remembered for more than One Headlight, and the people who show up to a Belly Up show on a Thursday night in October are the ones who know the deeper catalog — the ones who can tell you why Breach or Rebel, Sweetheart deserved more attention than they got and why the band's recent Americana turn feels like the sound they were always heading toward. The Belly Up is the room where bands sound like they are playing for friends, and The Wallflowers have always been the kind of band that sounds better when the room is small enough to see the sweat, the kind of band that rewards the audience that stayed past the hit. The intimate North County venue holds about 600 and every one of them knows they are in the right room. Thursday, October 8.
It runs two nights, and the Friday room is never quite the Saturday room; the regulars will tell you which to take.

Every country has the band that scored everybody's first heartbreak, and for a huge number of people in this city that band sang in Spanish and had a piano intro you would recognise in two notes. Mexican rock from the late nineties and early two-thousands occupies a strange position here: enormous to the people it belongs to, close to invisible in English-language music writing, which means a show like this never shows up in the listings you read. Elefante are one of the acts that carried that sound, and the reason to see them seated in a theater rather than at a festival is that these are songs people sing rather than dance to - the room becomes a choir about a third of the way in. Bring the sibling who still has the CD. They came out of Mexico City in the late nineties and their run of ballads is the part the room will carry without help from the stage. Saturday the 10th, doors before an eight o'clock start.

Gary Clark Jr. plays guitar the way a thunderstorm rolls across a Texas plain — slow at first, building, inevitable, and by the time it fully arrives you have forgotten that you were ever dry. The two-night stand at Humphreys Concerts by the Bay puts one of the most important guitarists of his generation in a room that was designed for exactly this: close quarters, harbor acoustics, and a crowd that came to listen, not to be seen. The phone-free Yondr pouch policy means the room is full of people watching instead of filming, which is the only way to experience a performer whose gift is making you forget anything exists outside the notes. General Admission, standing room only. Humphreys is a cashless venue, and the marina setting on Shelter Island makes the walk in feel like part of the show. Monday, October 27. Doors at 6:30 PM, show at 7:30 PM.

The second night of Gary Clark Jr. at Humphreys is what happens when a guitarist who already knows the room comes back with the muscle memory of the first show and the freedom to stretch. Clark's setlists shift between nights — more blues deep cuts on one, more of the Grammy-winning rock anthems on the other — and the standing-room-only format means the crowd is close enough to hear the amplifier hum between songs. Night two of a residency is historically where the magic happens, because the performer is no longer introducing themselves to the venue. They are just playing, leaning into the moments that surprised them on night one and building new ones that the crowd on Monday did not get. The Shelter Island marina reflects the stage lights, and the October air on the harbor carries the bass notes into Point Loma. Tuesday, October 28. Doors at 6:30 PM, show at 7:30 PM.

Afie Jurvanen writes songs that sound like the last hour of a house party where everyone who is left actually likes each other. Under the name Bahamas, the Canadian songwriter has spent a decade and a half making guitar-driven indie that is warm without being soft, funny without trying, and honest in the way that only comes from someone who has stopped performing honesty and started just being it.
The Industrial Sport & Sound tour brings Bahamas to Belly Up in Solana Beach — a room that was built for exactly this kind of show. Low ceilings. Good sound. The kind of venue where the bartender knows the setlist and the crowd is two drinks past pretending they did not come alone. Sister Ray opens with their own brand of textured indie rock.
This is the Sunday night show you almost talk yourself out of, and then you go, and then you remember why you live here.
Belly Up, 143 S. Cedros Ave, Solana Beach, CA 92075. Sunday, November 8, 2026. 8:00 PM. Belly Up books rooms like this most weeks of the year, and the people who come for the venue rather than the name are rarely sorry.

Somewhere in this city tonight there is a back room where the pinball never stopped — machines everyone assumed died with the arcades, lined up, lit up, and played for blood by people who know each ruleset cold. You thought it was nostalgia. They kept it a sport.
Once a month the league runs a real tournament: matchplay, a new opponent and a random machine every round, points stacking across the night. It is IFPA-sanctioned, but that is not why the regulars come. A good table is the most honest machine there is. It does not care who you are, only whether you can read the ball.
Here is what outsiders never expect: this crowd wants you to get good. Show up knowing only how to keep a ball alive and someone ranked will lean over between rounds and show you where the safe nudge is, when to let it drain on purpose.
Venues rotate. Check the league's Facebook group and the IFPA calendar for this month's location. All-ages at most stops, 21+ at the bars.
