Surf City USA Half Marathon 2027 — Huntington Beach
Feb 7, 2027 Huntington Beach Pier, Huntington …

Somewhere out on the coast highway the ocean settles in on your right and simply stays there, and the road quietly stops feeling like effort. Runners talk about that stretch for years afterward, usually while trying to talk somebody else into signing up. The course runs flat and fast along the coast in February, which is why times here come in quicker than most of the region and why the full distance qualifies for Boston. The half is what most people come for: manageable, coastal, and finishing steps from the pier — one of the better places in the country to stop running. The post-race scene is the other half of it. Beer garden, live music on the sand, the whole pier plaza handed over to people in foil blankets who just did something hard at the same time. Registration opens far ahead and usually closes before the new year, and the hotels fill for race weekend. Sign up alongside the friend who insists they could never. Then hold them to it.

Pacific Airshow 2026 — Huntington Beach
Oct 2 – Oct 4, 2026 Huntington Beach Pier, Huntington …

The sound arrives after the airplane does. That is the part nobody warns you about — a shape crosses the water in total silence, and a full beat later the noise catches up and hits you in the chest like a door slamming somewhere in the house. There is no stadium here and no bleachers between you and any of it. You stand on sand with the Pacific at your back while aircraft come down the shoreline low enough to read the markings, and a couple of million people up and down the coast lose their minds at the same instant. For something at this scale to happen over a public beach, free, open to whoever walks up, is genuinely unusual. Three days each October. The sand fills early on the main days, the premium viewing areas are ticketed and go fast, and the pier is the best free vantage point there is. Bring the kid who looks up every single time something flies over the house.

US Open of Surfing 2026 — Huntington Beach, CA
Jul 25 – Aug 2, 2026 Huntington Beach Pier Southside, P…

The world’s best surfers come to Huntington Beach every summer. It costs nothing to watch them. Nine days at the pier, over 500,000 spectators, WSL Championship Tour competition — free, all of it. July 25 through August 2, 2026. Position yourself on the sand south of the pier on a competition day and the scale becomes clear: the grandstands fill fast, the PA system carries the announcer's call across a half-mile of beach, and the surfing itself is elite. Watching a Championship Tour competitor read a set wave from the lineup and execute a perfect aerial reverse is genuinely different from anything you have seen on video — the speed, the size, and the precision register in person in a way screens cannot convey. Beyond competition, the event footprint covers blocks of beach: brand activations from action sports companies, live music at the WSL Beach Bar stage, athlete signings, and skate ramps running parallel events. The crowd is a mix of surf obsessives, families, and first-timers who stumbled onto the pier and stayed for three hours. All of them are welcome. The US Open of Surfing is for anyone who wants to watch elite sport in the best possible setting at zero cost. If you live in Southern California and have never made the trip to Huntington for this event, you have been leaving one of the best free days of summer on the table every year. This is not just for surf fans — the atmosphere, the beach, and the sheer scale of the event make it worth the drive from anywhere in the greater LA area. The competition finals happen on the second weekend and draw the largest crowds; weekday sessions offer more space with the same level of competition. Get there early on finals weekend — parking fills by 9 AM and the beach near the pier is at capacity by noon. A free bike valet operates on 5th Street in downtown Huntington Beach both weekends, which makes cycling in genuinely practical. No shade on the competition sand — bring sunscreen, a hat, and more water than you think you need. Beach umbrellas are allowed, chairs are not. Dogs are not permitted at the event site. Binoculars are worth it for the far lineup. The best free viewing is from the pier itself, which gives an elevated angle on the competition zone, though it closes during high surf conditions. There is no equivalent event in American sports where you can watch the world's best athletes compete at their absolute peak without buying a ticket. For a Southern California event, it is also a national cultural export — Huntington Beach pier is recognizable to surf fans on every continent, and the US Open is the reason. July 25 through August 2, 2026. Free admission. Huntington Beach Pier, southside.

Every Tuesday · Next Oct 13 Main Street, Downtown Huntington B…

Every Tuesday evening, Main Street in downtown Huntington Beach closes to cars and opens as a walking street market. Street vendors, local food, live music from rotating performers, and the particular energy of a beach town mid-week in summer when the people who live here outnumber the tourists for once. Surf City Nights runs year-round, but the summer editions have a different quality: the air is warm after dark, the pier is a ten-minute walk, and the crowd is relaxed in the way that only happens on a Tuesday night in a place where the weekend feels like it never fully ended. Free. Merchant specials from the downtown shops and restaurants that line Main. Runs 5pm to 9pm every Tuesday on Main Street from Pacific Coast Highway to 5th Street. Park in the city garage and walk. The pier at the end of Main is worth the extra five minutes.

Flat track racing on the sand. Custom motorcycles gleaming in the Pacific sun. And a crowd that knows the difference between a tracker and a scrambler, even if most of them rode here in an SUV. The Moto Beach Classic is a free, family-friendly motorsport festival on Bolsa Chica State Beach in Huntington Beach — organized by Roland Sands Design and built around the Super Hooligan TT flat track races. Beyond the racing: custom motorcycle displays, e-bike demos, stunt shows, art installations, vendors, food, and live entertainment. The whole thing runs 10 AM to 6:30 PM with the Pacific Ocean as the backdrop. October 17, 2026. Bolsa Chica State Beach, Huntington Beach, CA. Free admission. This is the event that makes people who don't ride motorcycles start thinking about riding motorcycles. That's the point.

OC Marathon 2027 — Huntington Beach
May 2, 2027 Huntington Beach, CA 92648

You run through Costa Mesa and Huntington Beach and the reward at the end is the ocean itself - the finish line dropping you onto sand and surf, steps from the pier, in one of the most scenic finishes in American distance running. The OC Marathon routes participants each spring toward that ending, and it serves the full spectrum: full marathon, half marathon, 10K, 5K, and a dedicated kids' run, drawing thousands from across the region and beyond. The full marathon course meets Boston Marathon qualification standards, pulling in serious competitive runners, while the half marathon is the most popular distance and routinely sells out months in advance. Live bands and volunteer crowds line the route through downtown Huntington Beach, and the post-race area includes food, a beer garden, and live music. Packet pickup and the race expo run in the days before at a dedicated location - check ocmarathon.com for the current expo venue and schedule. Register early regardless of distance; the event fills well ahead of the entry deadline. 2027, Huntington Beach.

Los Angeles Pinball League — Monthly Tournament
Monthly · Next Oct 13 Various venues, Los Angeles, CA

Somewhere in this city tonight there is a back room where the pinball never stopped — machines everyone assumed died with the arcades, lined up, lit up, and played for blood by people who know each ruleset cold. You thought it was nostalgia. They kept it a sport. Once a month the league runs a real tournament: matchplay, a new opponent and a random machine every round, points stacking across the night. It is IFPA-sanctioned, but that is not why the regulars come. A good table is the most honest machine there is. It does not care who you are, only whether you can read the ball. Here is what outsiders never expect: this crowd wants you to get good. Show up knowing only how to keep a ball alive and someone ranked will lean over between rounds and show you where the safe nudge is, when to let it drain on purpose. Venues rotate. Check the league's Facebook group and the IFPA calendar for this month's location. All-ages at most stops, 21+ at the bars.

LoL Worlds 2026 — Play-In Stage (Los Angeles)
In 8 days · Oct 15 – Oct 18 Riot Games Arena, 12181 Bluff Cree…

Every region sends its dark horses, and most of them go home in the first week. That is what makes the opening stage the most nervous, least predictable stretch of the whole tournament. The Play-In Stage is where teams that did not walk in with a guaranteed bracket spot have to earn one, on foreign soil, against opponents they have only ever studied on video. Nothing is safe and nobody is comfortable. Upsets that reshape the entire championship happen here, in front of a few hundred people, before the broadcast audience has fully tuned in. Riot Games Arena is the tightest, loudest room in North American esports — small enough that crowd noise reaches the stage, close enough to watch a player's posture change when a fight goes wrong. From inside that building it is a different sport. Riot Games Arena, 12181 Bluff Creek Dr, Playa Vista. October 15-18. Tickets through lolesports.com. If you have only ever watched it on stream, this is the one to go to.

Anime Expo 2027 — Los Angeles Convention Center
Jul 1 – Jul 4, 2027 Los Angeles Convention Center, 120…

You will be tired in a way that feels earned. Four days, a hundred thousand people, and not one of them needs you to explain what you are talking about. The largest anime convention in North America takes the Los Angeles Convention Center over Fourth of July weekend and spills into the JW Marriott and the Ritz-Carlton beside it. Industry panels, screening rooms, autograph sessions with voice actors and composers, concerts that sell out weeks ahead. Studios from Japan use this as their main North American announcement stage — if a sequel or adaptation is being revealed, it often happens in a room you could be standing in. The exhibit hall carries imported merchandise and collaboration exclusives that surface nowhere else on the continent. Los Angeles Convention Center, 1201 S Figueroa St. Thursday through Sunday. Badges run from top-tier early-access down to single-day passes. Book the connected hotel corridor months out. Everyone who tells you that learned it the hard way.
