Miami Horror at Pacific Electric
In 9 days · Oct 16 $35+ Pacific Electric, 1729 Naud St, Lo…

Some records just sound like a convertible at golden hour, and this band built an entire catalog out of that one feeling. Sun-warmed synth-pop with a disco spine, engineered so precisely for movement that standing still starts to feel like a personal failing. The Australian outfit behind Sometimes and Holidays is a different proposition live than on record. The studio gloss comes off, an actual band pushes every song harder than the version in your headphones, and the warehouse room over on Naud Street suits them for it: concrete, height, and enough space for a floor to bounce instead of shuffle. This is the antidote to a season of dark rooms and brooding sets. All lift, all shimmer, hands up through the entire back half. Downtown Los Angeles, doors in the evening. Round up the people who treat a dance floor as the entire reason to leave the house.

The Tear Garden at Pacific Electric
Sep 14, 2026 $35+ Pacific Electric, 1729 Naud St, Lo…

Two of the strangest minds in dark music almost never share a stage, which is the entire reason this one matters. The Tear Garden is what happens when cEvin Key of Skinny Puppy and Edward Ka-Spel spend decades collaborating with nobody asking them to be commercial about it. The result sounds like a fever dream narrated by someone who has read too many banned books — psychedelic, menacing, patient, and unlike anything else the genre produces. It tours so rarely that catching it feels less like buying a ticket and more like confirming a rumor in person. The venue's warehouse room suits the disorientation exactly. Concrete, low light, nowhere for the sound to politely go. Go in prepared to have your sense of what a concert is quietly dismantled. Then drag along the person who claims nothing surprises them anymore, and watch that claim fall apart in real time.

Stabbing Westward, PIG, 16 Volt & Acumen Nation at Pacific Electric
Sep 11, 2026 $40+ Pacific Electric, 1729 Naud St, Lo…

If you spent the late nineties in black jeans and a permanent scowl, this bill is a time machine with the dial set to your best worst year. Stabbing Westward built anthems out of romantic devastation, 'Save Yourself' and 'Shame' among them, and they anchor a full night of the era's industrial heavy hitters: PIG, 16 Volt, Acumen Nation, all on one stage in a restored rail-yard building downtown that was made to take this much volume. The low end has somewhere to go in a room like that, which is exactly why these bands sound wrong in a normal club. It is a reunion for a scene that never actually broke up. It went home, got jobs, and kept the records. Naud Street in downtown Los Angeles, one night, doors in the evening. Come scream the choruses you have been muttering in the car for twenty-five years. The eyeliner is optional. The catharsis is not.

Cold Waves XIV — Los Angeles
Sep 11, 2026 Pacific Electric, Los Angeles, CA …

Somewhere between the kick drum and the static — where melody dissolves into texture and the low end becomes a physical object in your sternum — sits a frequency only certain people can hear. If you are still reading, you already know what it sounds like. This one started as a memorial and turned into the annual gathering point for everybody who ever found salvation in a drum machine. Two nights. The first is Stabbing Westward marking thirty years of Wither, Blister, Burn & Peel, with PIG, 16 Volt, and Acumen Nation on a bill that reads like a time capsule from when the genre still felt dangerous. The second belongs to The Black Queen, whose glacial synths keep quietly redefining what this music can feel like, with Forever Grey, NGHTCRWLR, Houses of Heaven, GRIZZ CLL, and Snakes of Russia proving the scene is not looking backward. Downtown Los Angeles, in the newest large-format room in the city. Two-day passes and single-night tickets through AXS. This is not a show you watch. It is a show that watches you back.

Shiner, Fotocrime, Nonexistent Night
In 8 days · Oct 15 Casbah, 2501 Kettner Blvd, San Die…

Too heavy for the radio and too melodic for the hardcore kids was a real commercial dead end, and the bands stuck in it spent the nineties being adored by about eleven thousand people who all still bring it up unprompted at parties. The headliner came out of Kansas City and made that particular trade-off sound deliberate: enormous low end, patient song structures, vocals that stay calm while everything underneath them gets heavier. Then look at who is opening. Fotocrime plays cold, drum-machine-driven post-punk that on paper shares nothing with the band above it, and in sequence makes complete sense — the same appetite for weight and repetition, routed through a different decade and a much colder set of tools. That is the actual reason to go. Bills this well-sequenced are rare, and the odds are good you arrive for one act and order the other one's record from the parking lot afterward. Doors seven-thirty, first act eight-thirty, a Thursday. October 15, Casbah, 2501 Kettner Blvd. Bring whoever you argue about record production with. The line between heavy nineties rock and the darkwave rooms across town is far thinner here than either crowd will admit.

MONSTER PROM at Scream Diego
In 10 days · Oct 17 DoubleTree by Hilton Mission Valle…

You did not get the prom you wanted the first time around. Almost nobody did, which is practically the defining feature of the event. So a horror convention in Mission Valley hands the night back with the lighting corrected: a proper dance, six to ten in the evening, set inside a weekend already full of practical effects artists and monster makeup and people who can talk for an hour about one creature suit. Dressing as the thing that frightened you at nine years old is not a costume in this ballroom, it is a dialect, and everyone present speaks it fluently. The crossover is what makes it work. Horror crowds and dark-alternative crowds rarely share a floor, and when they do the room takes on an unusual generosity, because nobody is the strangest person there and so nobody has to defend anything. Four hours. Comfortable shoes under the gown. The slow song still gets everybody.

Italo-Disco Horror Night - Argento's Deep Red
Oct 27, 2026 Vidiots at the Eagle Theatre, 4884…

Giallo and italo-disco came out of the same country in the same decade, and almost nobody thinks to put them in one room. Argento's 1975 picture is the one with the Goblin score, the murder glimpsed through a window by a man who cannot trust what he saw, and a colour palette that makes no logical sense and perfect emotional sense. A DJ spins italo before the film and again after it, so you dance, then you watch somebody get killed to what is essentially a prog-rock lullaby, then you dance again — and the second dance feels different, which is the joke and also the point. It screens in a restored Eagle Rock movie house that still runs 35mm and keeps a thirty-six seat microcinema down the hall. Doors open ninety minutes before the picture, because the first set is not a warm-up act. Horror obsessives and record collectors end up finding each other in the lobby, which is not something either scene planned on. Doors six, picture seven-thirty, Tuesday the 27th of October, at the old Eagle Theatre on Eagle Rock Blvd.

THE DAMNED - FINAL DAMNATION 50
Nov 13, 2026 House of Blues San Diego, 1055 Fif…

Fifty years is long enough that the farewell is not a marketing device, it is arithmetic. The band that put out the first British punk single in 1976 is coming through San Diego on a tour openly titled Final Damnation, and the people in that room will be doing the arithmetic too: this is likely the last time Dave Vanian fronts a room this size in this city. Punk's first record belonged to these men and they then spent four decades refusing to stay punk, drifting into gothic, psychedelic and music-hall territory that irritated purists and produced the better half of their catalogue. The Courettes open, which is a genuinely good pairing rather than filler. Seven o'clock on a Friday at a venue downtown that holds a thousand people, which is both too small for the history and exactly the right size for the noise. Bring the teenager in your life who thinks they invented this. Let them see where it came from while it is still standing in front of them.

Colin Newman of Wire and Malka Spigel of Minimal Compact
Jan 12, 2027 Casbah, 2501 Kettner Blvd, San Die…

In 1977 a band put out a record with twenty-one songs on it, several of them under a minute, and rearranged what a song was permitted to be. Half the music you like is downstream of it whether or not anyone told you. So here is the thing worth knowing before you buy: this is not a Wire set. The ticket files them under Immersion, the duo Colin Newman and Malka Spigel record as together, and it is ambient, patient, largely instrumental work. Anyone arriving to shout along with Pink Flag will be confused by minute four. Anyone arriving to sit inside a sound for ninety minutes is going to have one of those nights they describe badly for years afterward. Doors at seven, set at eight, on a January Tuesday in a two-hundred-capacity room, which is an absurd place to find either of them. January 12, Casbah, 2501 Kettner Blvd. Bring the one friend whose record collection you respect. The post-punk that turned into ambient and the ambient that turned into industrial are the same family tree, and this city keeps hosting its branches in rooms this small.

Los Angeles Pinball League — Monthly Tournament
Monthly · Next Oct 13 Various venues, Los Angeles, CA

Somewhere in this city tonight there is a back room where the pinball never stopped — machines everyone assumed died with the arcades, lined up, lit up, and played for blood by people who know each ruleset cold. You thought it was nostalgia. They kept it a sport. Once a month the league runs a real tournament: matchplay, a new opponent and a random machine every round, points stacking across the night. It is IFPA-sanctioned, but that is not why the regulars come. A good table is the most honest machine there is. It does not care who you are, only whether you can read the ball. Here is what outsiders never expect: this crowd wants you to get good. Show up knowing only how to keep a ball alive and someone ranked will lean over between rounds and show you where the safe nudge is, when to let it drain on purpose. Venues rotate. Check the league's Facebook group and the IFPA calendar for this month's location. All-ages at most stops, 21+ at the bars.
