Twelve years ago a track turned up with no artist attached to it, no photographs, no interviews and no explanation, and it got passed around purely on the strength of itself. Then it was everywhere, and whoever made it still would not show his face.
That was the gambit, it worked, and it is still the organizing idea of the whole project: the records arrive first and the person comes a distant second. The parenthesis in the billing tells you the rest of the story, because a second date only ever gets added once the first one is gone, which means a good half of this room is here on the rebound from missing out.
A Frogtown warehouse at ten on a December Saturday, where the smoke will be doing most of the stage design.
For the one who still insists the first EP was the best of it.
Ten o'clock at 4594 Electronics Place, December 5.

New Year's Eve is the one night a year when going out is an obligation, and you can feel it in a room: everyone watching a clock instead of each other, waiting to perform a feeling on cue.
The times on this one are the tell. Doors at ten, last record at three. That puts midnight almost exactly in the middle of the night instead of at the end of it, so the countdown lands while the floor is already moving and then simply keeps going. Nobody has to decide what to do afterward, because there is no afterward to negotiate — just another three hours of the same room and the same people.
Duke Dumont has been making the kind of house record that sounds like relief since 'Need U (100%)', and a warehouse off Electronics Place is a far better frame for that than a ballroom with a balloon drop and a cash bar.
Reframe Studios Indoors, 4594 Electronics Place. Doors at ten — go if you would rather your midnight be a middle than a finish line.

The first of January is the emptiest night of the year to want to go out. Everybody spent their social budget twenty-four hours ago, half the city is nursing a resolution, and the places that are open are running on a skeleton crew and yesterday's decorations.
Which is exactly why a warehouse off Electronics Place running a proper late set on New Year's Day is such an odd and welcome thing. The crowd is self-selected down to people who genuinely wanted this rather than people performing a holiday, and that changes a dancefloor completely. No countdown, no hats, nobody filming a kiss. Just a room that opens at ten and a long stretch of house music for whoever still has it in them.
The venue runs a different headliner the night before and the night after, so the staff will have been in that room for three days straight by the time you arrive, which tends to make them either very funny or very quiet.
4594 Electronics Place, doors at ten.
If you were disappointed by the night before, this is the correction — and almost nobody thinks to take it.

January 2 is the loneliest night on the calendar. The visitors have flown out, the resolutions do not start until Monday, and the city has the specific flatness of a room after everybody leaves a party. Nobody plans anything for January 2.
Which is why a Chicago house institution playing a Frogtown warehouse that night reads like somebody doing you a favor. Curtis Jones has been two people since the early nineties: Cajmere, who made Percolator, and Green Velvet, who turns up with the hair and the shout-along records. The second one is built for a floor of people who have quietly decided the holidays were not finished with them.
Electronics Place is a real street in a real industrial pocket by the river, and the walk in from parking is part of it. Wear shoes you can stand in for four hours.

The second week of January is where resolutions go to die quietly. The gym is still crowded with strangers, your coat has not properly dried since New Year's, and nothing in this city has felt like an actual event since the thirty-first.
Which is why a warehouse by the river throwing a birthday show for the most famously unimpressed man in dance music reads like a small mercy. Joel Zimmerman has spent two decades being openly irritated by the genre that made him rich, and then going out and playing it better than most of the people who are sincere about it. The helmet is a bit. The programming never has been.
Electronics Place is a real street in an industrial pocket off the LA River, and the long walk in from wherever you ended up parking is part of the whole thing.

Guitars processed until they stop sounding like guitars, drums recorded so close they distort, and a singer delivering deadpan lists of ordinary objects until the whole thing becomes unbearable — it should be an endurance test and is instead one of the most exhilarating live acts working. The Dublin group broke up, reformed, changed their name, and kept getting more extreme. Their records are famous among engineers for sounds nobody can identify. In a room this size the volume becomes the point; people describe it afterward in terms of physical sensation rather than songs. Highland Park's upstairs Masonic lodge has the ceiling height to take it. Music at 8:00 PM at 104 N Avenue 56, a Wednesday. Shows like this get recommended person to person with a warning attached, which is usually how the best ones travel.

Some music you have only ever listened to alone. Headphones, late, usually on a night when something had gone wrong and you needed a room built by someone who understood without asking. It never occurred to you that several thousand other people were doing exactly the same thing.
Olafur Arnalds writes for piano and strings and then runs it through electronics, which on paper sounds like a compromise and in practice sounds like weather. He built a pair of self-playing pianos, driven by software he wrote, that respond to what he plays live — so the instrument answers him on stage, and no two nights resolve the same way.
The Wiltern is a 1931 art deco theatre with a painted ceiling. People go quiet in it without being asked, which is the correct and rare condition for this.

Fifty years is long enough that the farewell is not a marketing device, it is arithmetic. The band that put out the first British punk single in 1976 is coming through San Diego on a tour openly titled Final Damnation, and the people in that room will be doing the arithmetic too: this is likely the last time Dave Vanian fronts a room this size in this city. Punk's first record belonged to these men and they then spent four decades refusing to stay punk, drifting into gothic, psychedelic and music-hall territory that irritated purists and produced the better half of their catalogue. The Courettes open, which is a genuinely good pairing rather than filler. Seven o'clock on a Friday at a venue downtown that holds a thousand people, which is both too small for the history and exactly the right size for the noise. Bring the teenager in your life who thinks they invented this. Let them see where it came from while it is still standing in front of them.

Teragram Ballroom, 1234 W 7th St, …
The Faroe Islands hold about fifty thousand people and produce weather that gets into the music. What arrives on stage is a voice doing two incompatible things at once - old Nordic folk singing, the kind passed down in a language most of the room does not speak, run through electronics that would not be out of place in a club. It should not cohere. It does, and the moment it lands is usually a song with no translation offered, where the crowd stops trying to follow the words and just takes the sound. Expect long held notes, a lot of low end, and a stillness in the room that is unusual for a Saturday. Worth knowing for anyone who has only heard the recordings: live, she sings a good deal of it unaccompanied, and the venue is small enough that you hear the room around the voice. Downtown Los Angeles, late November, all ages.

Drummers who lead their own bands usually overplay, and the reason this one does not is that he spent years as the guy other people called when a record needed rhythm that sounded like a machine and breathed like a person — including a famous last album by an artist who wanted exactly that. Under his own name the project is a different animal: electronics, synths, and drumming that treats a groove as something to erode rather than repeat. It reads as jazz on paper and lands closer to electronic music in the room, which is why the crowd is split between conservatory players and people who came for the beats and did not know they were at a jazz show. Highland Park's upstairs hall has the ceiling height this needs. Music at 8:00 PM at 104 N Avenue 56, a Tuesday in December. The players who come to this one usually end up at each other's gigs around town for the rest of the month.

Three Los Angeles projects on one bill in the desert reads like a coincidence and is closer to a family reunion — these are people who have played on each other's records, share producers, and came up through the same small rooms in the eastside. Illuminati Hotties makes the loudest and funniest music of the three; Baths has been making meticulous electronic pop since the blog era and has a following that treats those records as private property; Mini Trees writes the quiet ones. Together it is a fair snapshot of what one corner of this city actually sounds like right now. Watching that travel two hours into the high desert and land in a wooden saloon is the specific pleasure on offer. Music at 8:30 PM in Pioneertown. Bills like this are how a scene shows a town what it has been building, and how the people in it find out who else drove out.
