Grown adults come out of this one surprised to be wiping their eyes, which is not what anybody expects from a show with aerialists in it. A Depression-era circus, a runaway veterinary student, and a love story told under canvas that smells of sawdust and something more dangerous. Sara Gruen's novel had a long life in book clubs before Broadway got to it, and the staging is why people talk about the production rather than the plot: real circus arts, bodies in the air, puppetry conjuring an entire menagerie out of almost nothing while you watch it happen. It is a big old-fashioned romance done in a way theater has not quite managed before. The touring production plays Segerstrom Center in Costa Mesa, off the 405 near South Coast Plaza, in November. Bring somebody who still cries at the good ones and does not apologize for it.

A whole generation learned what a musical could be from a dancing teapot and a candelabra, and most of them never fully recovered. Put it on a real stage with a full orchestra swelling underneath Be Our Guest, and watch those same people — grown now, frequently with kids of their own — turn into puddles in the dark. This is grand, gold-drenched, family-first Broadway with no apology for any of it: the ballroom, the enchanted castle, the yellow gown lit so it reads from the back row of the hall. The touring production has the scale to actually deliver that ballroom, which is the moment everything hinges on and the one cheap productions always get wrong. Segerstrom in Costa Mesa is an easy stop off the freeway near the mall. Make it a first big theater night for a small person, or go entirely for yourself. Some stories really are worth telling as a tale as old as time.

My Hero Academia in Concert
Sep 15, 2026 Segerstrom Center for the Arts, 60…

You already know what Plus Ultra sounds like. You've heard it through earbuds on the bus, through laptop speakers at 2 AM, through the thin walls of a dorm room where someone was rewatching the tournament arc for the fourth time. You know the swell that hits when Deku breaks through. You know the strings that play when All Might stands up one last time. You've never heard it performed by fifteen musicians standing in a room with you. A 15-piece live band performs Yuki Hayashi's full score alongside projected sequences from all eight seasons. The moments you've replayed a hundred times get rebuilt in front of you: the breath between notes that streaming compresses away, the physical presence of a cello section pulling the weight of a scene you already know the ending to. Knowing doesn't help. You'll feel it all over again. This is not a screening with background music. It is the score as its own experience — the architecture underneath every scene you loved, isolated and amplified, played by people watching your face while they play. Segerstrom Hall, Costa Mesa.

& Juliet
Sep 9, 2026 $45+ Segerstrom Center for the Arts, 60…

What if Juliet didn't die for Romeo? & Juliet takes that gleeful what-if and runs it straight through a jukebox of Max Martin's biggest pop hits (Britney, Backstreet Boys, Katy Perry, Pink), turning Shakespeare's tragedy into a joyous, glitter-cannon night about a young woman writing her own ending. It is one of the most purely fun musicals touring right now, the kind that has the whole house on its feet screaming lyrics they didn't know they had memorized. & Juliet plays Segerstrom Center for the Arts in Costa Mesa September 9 through 21, 2026, an easy stop off the 405 near South Coast Plaza. Come for the pop bangers, stay for a surprisingly big-hearted story about second chances and choosing yourself. Bring the friends who still know every word to every 2000s radio hit. This one is a party.

A show ends and the group chat it created does not. For a lot of people the Tuesday-night ritual of watching, then immediately arguing about whether Lawrence deserved anything, was the actual social event - the episode was just the excuse. Ten years on, the cast and creators are taking that to a stage, which means the thing being celebrated is not really the television. It is the audience it assembled: Black women who finally saw a version of Los Angeles that looked like the one they lived in, down to the specific streets. A live anniversary show is one of the few formats where the crowd is the point and everybody in the room understands that. Go with the person you used to text during the ad breaks. The series was shot largely on location around Inglewood, View Park and Leimert, which makes staging the anniversary a few miles from those blocks a slightly pointed choice. Curtain at eight on Thursday the 8th of October.

The Cabinet of Dr. Caligari (Silent with Live Music Score)

The sets lean. Doorways narrow to points, windows are painted straight onto flats, shadows are brushed by hand onto the walls, and a hundred and six years on it still reads less like an old film than like somebody's actual nightmare, carefully transcribed. Conrad Veidt plays the somnambulist Cesare with a stillness that has been borrowed by every horror performance since, and the picture worked out most of what we now mean by a twist ending. The German crews who built those crooked walls were partly doing so because a collapsed postwar economy could not spare real timber or real light, which is how a budget shortfall hardened into the founding grammar of the genre. Watching it silent on a laptop is a wholly different act from sitting in a dark room while a musician plays to the picture in real time, choosing tempo against an audience they can hear breathing. Beverly Blvd, October 25, two in the afternoon.

Ricky Martin at Pechanga
Nov 8, 2026 $85+ Pechanga Resort Casino, 45000 Pech…

The opening horn stab of 'Livin' la Vida Loca' still hijacks a room the second it hits, and that is the whole case for a Ricky Martin night. Twenty-five years after he kicked the door down for Latin pop on American radio, the man remains a genuine force of stage presence -- the hips, the voice, the sheer wattage of a crowd that has been waiting to lose its mind. Pechanga puts him in the valley on a November Sunday, close enough that most of Temecula and Murrieta can be home before midnight and still hoarse from screaming. This is not a polite sit-down concert; it is a party that happens to have a superstar at the front of it. Wear the shoes you can actually move in. Some nights are for behaving. This is emphatically not one of them.

Something goes quiet in you when a singer opens her mouth in the language your grandparents argued in. Los Angeles holds the largest Armenian community outside Armenia, and most of what reaches a concert hall here is either careful folkloric preservation or straight diaspora nostalgia. This is neither. Composer John Hodian took the poems of Mkrtich Naghash, a fifteenth-century priest who wrote about exile while he was living it, set them for three female vocalists against duduk, oud, dhol and piano, and then let the whole thing build like a rock record rather than resolve like a hymn. The duduk is a double-reed pipe carved from apricot wood, and it sounds so close to a human voice at the edge of crying that it works on people who do not speak a single word of Armenian. It plays the Bram Goldsmith Theater on Wednesday, November 18 at 7:30pm in Beverly Hills. Six hundred years turns out to be no distance at all when the subject is missing home.

Some scores get into you sideways. You were watching for the story, and then a fiddle line came in under a scene and you found yourself grieving a place you have never been and a century you never lived in. Years later you still know it the instant it starts. Live is where that stops being nostalgia and becomes a room. The same music, played in front of you by people breathing at the same time, in a downtown theater from an era that understood how a hall should carry sound without help. The version that exists on record is the map. This is the territory. Doors at 7:00 PM, show at 8:00 PM, ages 16 and up, at the Fox Performing Arts Center on Mission Inn Avenue in Riverside. There is no second chance at this particular night in this particular room. That is the only thing a live show offers that a recording never can — so take whoever you first heard it with.

Sleepless in Seattle in Concert — San Diego Symphony at The Rady Shell
Dec 11, 2026 The Rady Shell at Jacobs Park, 124…

Near the end of the movie, Sam stands on the observation deck of the Empire State Building and the camera holds on his face for three full seconds before Meg Ryan appears. In those three seconds, the orchestra carries everything the character cannot say. You've heard it through speakers a dozen times. You've never heard it performed by a live symphony while the film plays on a screen overlooking the San Diego bay. The San Diego Symphony performs the complete score of Sleepless in Seattle at The Rady Shell at Jacobs Park — Marc Shaiman's arrangements, the Nat King Cole needle-drops, the Jimmy Durante moment that lands harder than it has any right to. The orchestra sits between you and the screen, and the score exists in the room as a physical thing, vibrating in the air, rather than a signal compressed into a speaker. Every romantic movie you've ever watched alone on a couch prepared you for exactly this feeling, and none of them prepared you for how different it is when you can see the violinist's face. One performance only: Friday, December 11, 2026 at 7:30 PM. The Rady Shell at Jacobs Park, 1245 Seventh Ave, San Diego. Tickets via the San Diego Symphony box office.
