Picture a nightclub at ten on the Friday after Thanksgiving where the drop is the key change in Defying Gravity and six hundred people scream it at a ceiling. That is the whole product and it is not a joke - it is a real touring club night that sells out rooms across the country because it solved a problem nobody was addressing: theatre kids grew up, still want to go out, and do not want to hear house music. So the DJ plays Hamilton into Mamma Mia into Rent, the floor knows every lyric and every gesture, and strangers perform choreography at each other with total sincerity. Go with one friend who did drama and watch a version of them you have not met. Twenty-one and over, late start, and the crowd arrives already knowing what it is - which is what makes it work. Teragram Ballroom, downtown Los Angeles, the night after the holiday.

The Faroe Islands hold about fifty thousand people and produce weather that gets into the music. What arrives on stage is a voice doing two incompatible things at once - old Nordic folk singing, the kind passed down in a language most of the room does not speak, run through electronics that would not be out of place in a club. It should not cohere. It does, and the moment it lands is usually a song with no translation offered, where the crowd stops trying to follow the words and just takes the sound. Expect long held notes, a lot of low end, and a stillness in the room that is unusual for a Saturday. Worth knowing for anyone who has only heard the recordings: live, she sings a good deal of it unaccompanied, and the venue is small enough that you hear the room around the voice. Downtown Los Angeles, late November, all ages.

Somewhere around the second chorus you will realise the entire room is made of people who were fourteen in a very specific year and have decided, tonight, to be that age again on purpose. It is not nostalgia exactly - the band is young and the songs are new - it is more that a certain kind of guitar tone gives permission. Three guys from Los Angeles who got their break opening for bands their own fans' older siblings loved, playing a room that holds six hundred and change on a Tuesday in late November. The Tuesday is the point. Weeknight shows at this size draw the people who actually listen rather than the people who bought tickets because it was Saturday, and the difference is audible from the floor - everybody knows the words, including the deep ones. All ages, which at this venue means the front row is teenagers and the bar is their parents pretending not to enjoy it. Seventh Street, downtown Los Angeles.

Nobody warns you that leaving a faith community costs you the music too. You can walk away from the doctrine and still catch yourself, years later, missing the specific physical fact of a room full of people singing the same thing at once with their eyes shut.
Rave Jesus is the strangest possible answer to that, and it works. Hard dance production under genuinely earnest worship writing, played to a room that is half people who never left and half people who did. The all-ages door matters here in a way it does not at most shows — it means the fifteen-year-old who came with the youth group and the thirty-year-old who has not been to church in a decade are on the same floor.
Twenty dollars in advance is club-night pricing for something that behaves more like a revival. Whatever it is, it is not cynical, and that is rare enough to be worth the drive.

Rooms go quiet in a particular way when musicians who have played together since childhood start doing the thing where nobody appears to be leading. Four brothers, raised as a band before any of them were old enough to choose it, one of whom is routinely named among the best bass players alive by people who do not hand out that phrase lightly. What you are actually buying a ticket for is the interplay - the moment a groove shifts underneath itself and every one of them lands on the far side together without a glance. Bring somebody who plays an instrument; they will not recover. Worth knowing: this is a listening crowd, not a dancing one, and the good spots are the ones with a sightline to the hands. A Sunday evening in mid-December, when the rest of the city is doing Christmas errands. Seventh Street, downtown.

For half a century the tapes sat in Zambian record shops and almost nowhere else, which is how owning the vinyl turned into a secret handshake among the few crate-diggers who knew what they were holding. They were the biggest band in the country in the seventies, the beating heart of a scene called Zamrock, and then history simply swallowed them. Reissue campaigns dragged them back into the light. The surviving members put it back together. So the thing that felt structurally impossible — standing in a room while that fuzzed-out guitar actually happens in front of you — is now a late-August night in downtown Los Angeles. Teragram is small enough that there is no bad spot in it, which is exactly how a resurrection ought to feel. The people who reclaim lost history one record at a time already have this circled. Go find out what they have been talking about.

Being furious and funny at the same time is a rare trick, and almost nobody manages it without collapsing into one or the other. A band that can make you dance to a song quietly dismantling everything wrong with modern life has earned something specific from the people who follow it.
The Leeds quartet do it talk-sung, razor-witted, and groove-driven, trading their sharpest one-liners with a crowd that already knows them well enough to deliver the punchlines back. That exchange is the show. It only works in a room where the wit lands like it was aimed at you personally.
Teragram is that room — the downtown space the Fontaines D.C. and Dry Cleaning crowd treats as home turf, small enough that nothing gets lost on the way to the back wall.
Send it to the friend who reads lyrics as closely as they listen to them. This is the one they will thank you for.

Teragram Ballroom, 1234 West 7th Street, Los Angeles. May 23rd. Three bands — Colorblind, Windwaker, and If Not For Me — converging on a West 7th venue that handles multi-artist bills the way bills like this need to be handled: standing floor, a sight line from any position in the room, the sound at the level the bands came for.
A three-act bill is the format where the night builds. The opening act sets the temperature. The middle act raises it. By the time the headliner takes the stage, the room knows what it's doing. Teragram is the Los Angeles venue that holds this kind of bill at exactly the right density — full enough that the energy compounds, not so packed that you lose the experience of each performance.
Tickets at ticketmaster.com. May 23rd in Downtown Los Angeles. The Teragram is accessible from all of LA and a clean shot from Orange County on the 110. Get there early. The opening act is where the night's first discovery happens.

Teragram Ballroom, 1234 West 7th Street, Los Angeles. May 17th. Caroline Kingsbury — the Nashville-based songwriter whose music processes heartbreak and survival through the specific lens of country-adjacent emotional rock — bringing the Shock Treatment Tour to Downtown LA's most intimate mid-size room.
The Teragram Ballroom is the venue that makes this kind of show what it's supposed to be: close enough to see what's happening on stage, the standing floor creating the specific crowd dynamic where a room of people who know all the words to a sad song become something communal. Kingsbury's catalog rewards the listener who has carried it through something specific, and there are always more of those in the room than anyone expected.
Tickets at ticketmaster.com. May 17th. The Shock Treatment Tour is the record brought to life in the rooms it was built for. If you've been listening and waiting for the Los Angeles date — this is it. The Teragram fills from the stage back. Be there early enough to be where you want to be when the first song starts.

Peacock Theater, 777 Chick Hearn C…
Every country has the band that scored everybody's first heartbreak, and for a huge number of people in this city that band sang in Spanish and had a piano intro you would recognise in two notes. Mexican rock from the late nineties and early two-thousands occupies a strange position here: enormous to the people it belongs to, close to invisible in English-language music writing, which means a show like this never shows up in the listings you read. Elefante are one of the acts that carried that sound, and the reason to see them seated in a theater rather than at a festival is that these are songs people sing rather than dance to - the room becomes a choir about a third of the way in. Bring the sibling who still has the CD. They came out of Mexico City in the late nineties and their run of ballads is the part the room will carry without help from the stage. Saturday the 10th, doors before an eight o'clock start.

Every Sunday· Next Oct 11
The Mint, 6010 W Pico Blvd, Los An…
A Sunday night gig is a working musician's gig. Nobody plays Sunday for the money or the crowd size — they play it because the room lets them try things, and the people who come out on a Sunday are the ones who actually want to hear somebody try things.
The Mint opened in 1937 and has the wall of photographs to prove it. Small room, low ceiling, the kind of place where the piano is close enough that you hear the pedal. The Sam Hirsh Trio holds the Sunday residency and a rotating cast of the city's players cycle through alongside them, which means the bill changes every week and the standard does not. A residency is different from a booking: the band knows the room, the room knows the band, and by the second set they stop performing at you.
Doors at seven on Sundays. The trio goes on late, and the last set is the one worth staying for.

You found her when the algorithm finally got something right. Three songs deep into a playlist you didn't ask for, 'Glue Song' started playing and something in your chest remembered being seventeen and knowing exactly how the world felt.
beabadoobee brings The Powerlines Tour to the Kia Forum on October 21, with Wisp opening. This is indie rock with shoegaze DNA and bedroom-pop honesty — the sound of someone recording into a laptop at midnight who somehow ended up filling arenas because the feeling was that specific and that universal. Her fourth album Pylon drops this fall, and the live show is where the songs get louder, messier, and more real than the recordings.

Certain records are permanently welded to a specific year of your life, and there is nothing you can do about it. You hear four bars and you are back in a car with people you no longer speak to, and the feeling is not sadness exactly — closer to being visited.
Snakehips make that kind of record. The London duo spent the mid-2010s producing the slow, warm, slightly melancholy end of dance music — the songs that played at the point in the night when the party was thinning out and nobody wanted to say so. They kept working, which the internet occasionally forgets, and the DJ sets now run harder and funkier than the records that made them.
The Gaslamp room holds a few hundred, and a Friday there draws a crowd old enough to remember the first time around and young enough to still be out at two.
Ten at night to two on Friday the twenty-third, down on Sixth Avenue.

Pappy & Harriet's, 53688 Pioneerto…
You did not know you were being taught what jazz sounded like. You were nine, it was after school, and the show about the kid with the football head had a soundtrack of walking bass and muted trumpet that nobody explained to you because it did not need explaining. Then you grew up and heard a Blue Note record and felt an odd familiarity you could not place. The composer who did that to you is playing this room, with a live combo, running the cues as actual arrangements rather than nostalgia snippets — the boarding house theme, the stoop music, the sad ones. He wrote them with real players in the room in the nineties, which is why they hold up as music instead of as a bit. The venue is an hour and change past the wind farms, a saloon in the high desert where the stage is small and people stand on the patio between sets under a sky with actual stars in it. Music at 9:00 PM in Pioneertown. Bring a jacket — the desert drops hard after dark, and everybody who has been here before knows it.

Nova SD, 454 6th Ave, San Diego, C…
They have been making the same joke for twenty-five years and it has never once stopped being funny, which is its own kind of achievement. A Jewish guy and an Arab guy from Montreal, self-described as the only successful Arab-Jewish partnership since the dawn of human culture, playing talkbox funk with total sincerity underneath the bit.
Dave 1 and P-Thugg built a career on electro-funk that could easily have been a costume and instead turned out to be a genuine command of the form — the basslines are real, the talkbox is played rather than programmed, and the songs hold up without the humor propping them up. The DJ set is looser than the live show and leans harder into the disco and boogie records underneath their whole sound.
Halloween eve in the Gaslamp, which means the room will be half in costume and entirely committed.
Halloween eve, doors at ten, and you should absolutely wear the costume.
