An hour of open water is the best opening act anyone ever booked. You leave the mainland, the harbor drops behind you, and by the time the island comes up out of the haze you have stopped being a person with a commute. The ballroom is waiting at the other end. Art deco, round, about a thousand reserved seats, close enough to the players that the intimacy is real rather than claimed, with acoustics that make it one of the most beautiful rooms in California. Contemporary jazz has filled it every October since 1987, smooth jazz and R&B jazz and fusion across a full weekend twenty-six miles offshore. This one takes planning. Ferry seats sell out ahead of the festival and are booked separately, and the island's hotels and B and Bs fill just as fast, so everyone in that room decided months ago. That is exactly why it feels the way it does. Everybody there chose it twice. Send it to the person you would happily be stuck on a boat with.

He made the track that broke him when he was fifteen years old, in a bedroom in Rouen, and it went around the world before he was old enough to get into most of the venues that were playing it. That fact sits underneath the whole project — this is music made by someone who learned to build rooms before he was allowed inside them. Mehdi Benjelloun writes melodic electronic music with actual songs in it, which puts him at odds with a scene organized around drops. The live show leans on that: guitar, live vocals, arrangements that breathe rather than build-release-build. Forester open, and the pairing is deliberate — both acts make music for the drive home rather than the peak of the night. The Hollywood room is a 1927 theatre with a balcony, which is a strange and good place to see this. The ceiling matters. Doors at ten on Saturday the seventeenth; the theatre on Vine runs until two.

Halfway through the course, you run past bison. Actual American bison, on an island you can only reach by boat, standing there entirely unbothered while you try to remember what mile you are on. That is roughly the moment this stops being a trail marathon and becomes a story you will be telling for years. The route runs point to point across the interior, Two Harbors to Avalon, 26.2 miles of technical trail with serious climbing, through the bison range and the highlands and finally down into the harbor for the finish. These are trails otherwise open only to hikers. The island's ecology was shaped by thousands of years of isolation from the mainland, and running through it does not feel like anywhere on the mainland either. Registration fills fast, because California trail runners talk to each other and this is the race they talk about. Ferry passage is part of the entry. Send it to the runner who believes they have already done every SoCal race worth doing.

Melodic dance music gets dismissed as the soft option by people who have never watched a room of two thousand strangers sing a synth line back at a stage. There is nothing soft about that. It is closer to a hymn than anyone involved would admit. Chad Cisneros and Dave Reed have been at this since 2008, which in dance music is close to geologic time. They came up through the trance era, moved into progressive, and kept the thing that mattered — songs built to be sung rather than survived. The Hollywood room is a 1927 theatre with a balcony, and hearing this kind of material in a space designed for orchestras rather than sound systems does something odd and good to the low end. Doors at ten on Saturday the twenty-sixth of September, the theatre on Vine, running until two.

Catalina Island Avalon Triathlon 2026

The road you're pedaling has no cars on it, no exhaust, no honking - just the Pacific on one side and the hillside terrain of Catalina on the other, because the island's roads are closed to traffic. There is nowhere else in Southern California you can race like this. The Catalina Island Triathlon opens with an ocean swim in the clear water of Avalon Bay, moves to a bike leg through the coastal hills, and finishes with a run along Avalon's waterfront promenade. Sprint and Olympic distances suit different experience levels. Everyone travels over via Catalina Express ferry from Long Beach or San Pedro - the crossing and the island are part of the experience. Athletes who come the day before and stay overnight in Avalon get the full version: dinner in the casino district, a morning race, and a post-race celebration on the waterfront. Spectators can cheer from the Avalon waterfront without going anywhere near the course; the swim and run finishes are visible from the beachfront.
