In 2015 she was diagnosed with a rare brain condition, had two surgeries, and came out of them temporarily unable to understand language or music — the notes were there but they meant nothing. She relearned it. The album she made afterward got nominated for a Grammy. Jennifer Lee came up through the Los Angeles beat scene, the Low End Theory era, the only woman signed to Brainfeeder in the early days. Her sets sit in an unusual place: too melodic for a techno room, too strange for a pop room, built out of hip-hop drums and washed synths and the occasional left turn into something that sounds like it is dissolving. Knowing what she came back from does change how the quiet parts land. Costa Mesa is a long way from the Low End Theory basement, and that is sort of the point — this scene grew up and moved outward. Saturday the seventeenth. She goes on late and the room thins out into exactly the people who came for her.

Benny Benassi
Oct 24 – Oct 25, 2026 Time Nightclub, 1875 Newport Blvd,…

Somebody in your life has a very strong opinion about a track released in 2002, and if you bring it up they will explain, at length, that it was either the beginning or the end of something. Twenty-four years later the argument is unresolved and the man who caused it is still touring. Benny Benassi is one of the small number of producers whose work genuinely rerouted a genre — the filtered electro-house sound he helped define got absorbed so completely that people forget it had an author. He has a Grammy for a remix and a catalogue that spans from the original club records through the festival era and out the other side. Seeing him in a room of a few hundred rather than a field of thirty thousand is the version worth having. Saturday the twenty-fourth, doors at ten, and the room in Costa Mesa is small enough to see his hands.

Two brothers from Norway, which is a country with about five and a half million people and an improbable stranglehold on melodic dance music. Something about the winters. Daniel and Markus Slettebakken have been releasing as Kream for a decade, working the warmer, more song-shaped end of house — the stuff that is built around a vocal rather than around a drop, which puts them slightly at odds with the rooms that book them. The Orange County crowd tends to skew toward big-room, and a set that leans melodic in that context reads as a deliberate choice rather than a default. Halloween weekend in Costa Mesa. The parking lot is the pregame and everybody knows it. Ten at night on Friday the thirtieth, until half one.

Future bass had a moment around 2016 that everyone assumed would be brief, and then a generation of people who were fifteen at the time grew up and kept the sound alive out of pure loyalty. It is one of the few dance subgenres kept going by its audience rather than its producers. Beauz are a duo who came up in exactly that window and have stayed working through the years when the sound was unfashionable. The live sets lean harder than the records — the pretty, pitched-vocal material gets used as setup rather than payoff — which tends to surprise people who came expecting the SoundCloud version. Orange County on a Friday in November, which is the quiet part of the calendar and therefore the part where the regulars actually show up. Doors at ten on Friday the sixth, and the room keeps going well past the headline set, which is what the regulars plan around.

A man plays an actual trumpet over hardstyle. It should not work. It has worked for a decade, across stadiums and football walk-out music and a genuinely improbable career, and at some point the joke stopped being a joke. The Australian's live show is closer to a variety act than a DJ set — the instrument comes out, the crowd loses composure, and there is no irony anywhere in the room. Hardstyle came out of the Netherlands and Belgium and has always been a scene that travels — people fly to events, learn the dances, and treat the calendar as a circuit rather than a night out. Hardstyle audiences are among the most committed in dance music, and Orange County has a deep one that rarely gets acknowledged in coverage of Southern California nightlife. Saturday the third of October, ten at night, on Newport Boulevard in Costa Mesa.

Orange County gets treated as the place you drive through on the way to somewhere with a better story. The people who actually live there have a whole nightlife the rest of Southern California never bothers to learn about, and they are not especially interested in explaining it to you. Marlon Flohr and Ralph van Hilst have been making festival-sized records for well over a decade, the kind engineered to be heard across an open field by forty thousand people. Putting that in a room of a few hundred is a specific pleasure — the same track that reads as spectacle outdoors becomes something physical indoors, closer to being inside the speaker than in front of it. Costa Mesa gets the compressed version. Ten at night until half past one, Saturday the twenty-sixth, on Newport Boulevard.
