Father Joe's Villages Thanksgiving Day 5K Turkey Trot 2026 — Balboa Park
Nov 27, 2026 Balboa Park, 1549 El Prado, San Di…

The alarm goes off at 6 AM on Thanksgiving and your entire family groans. Three hours later everyone is wearing a turkey hat, your cousin PR'd without telling anyone she was trying, and you've already earned the pie. Father Joe's Villages Turkey Trot sends thousands of runners through Balboa Park every Thanksgiving morning. It starts at 7:15 AM — early enough that you're home before the oven timer goes off — and what comes after the finish line is almost better than the run: a post-race festival with awards, a costume contest where the turkey suits get genuinely competitive, live music, and a beer garden that opens at 9 AM because it's a holiday and nobody is judging. Every registration helps Father Joe's Villages serve over a million meals to San Diegans experiencing homelessness. The run is a party. The reason for the run is not. Thursday, November 27, 2026. 7:15 AM. Balboa Park, 1549 El Prado, San Diego 92101. Register at my.neighbor.org.

Dweezil Zappa - DZ20: Like Father, Like Son
Nov 27, 2026 $51+ The Magnolia, 210 E Main St, El Ca…

Imagine inheriting not money but an impossible job: keeping alive music so difficult that trained orchestras sweat over it, written by a father whose genius everyone acknowledges and almost nobody can actually play. That is the mission Dweezil Zappa chose, and he has spent decades inside it, a virtuoso in his own right resurrecting his father's labyrinthine catalog note for impossible note, out of what can only honestly be called love. Live, it is jaw-dropping in the literal sense: passages that have no business being playable, performed with precision and visible joy, so a new generation finally hears what the fuss was about while the old faithful quietly come apart in the back rows. The Magnolia in El Cajon, all ages, an evening show in a room whose acoustics deserve this material. Come watch a son honor a father the only way that really counts, by refusing to let the music die.

Fear Factory with Darkest Hour and Brotality
Nov 27, 2026 $33 The Glass House, 200 W 2nd St, Pom…

Machines were going to take over long before the headlines caught up, and Fear Factory has been scoring that dread since 1989 — industrial metal built like an assembly line, riffs that chug like pistons, clean-sung choruses fighting through a wall of mechanized rage. Their whole catalog is a warning about man versus machine, and three decades on it lands harder than ever, which is its own bleak joke. This is a night for the metal faithful who like their heaviness with a concept and a spine, with modern metalcore crew Darkest Hour and openers Brotality bringing the newer blood. The Glass House in Pomona gets loud enough to rattle fillings. Friday, November 27, 2026, doors 7pm, all ages. Come let a wall of industrial precision pummel the holiday stress out of you, with a crowd that has been showing up for this sound since before half the room was born. Wear the black shirt you save for the heavy ones; tonight earns it.

Cristian Castro - Nada Solo Exitos Tour
Nov 27, 2026 $50+ Pechanga Arena, 3500 Sports Arena …

For a certain kind of romantic, no voice hits quite like Cristian Castro's: the Mexican pop balladeer whose soaring, heart-on-sleeve love songs have been making people swoon and cry at weddings for three decades. His Nada Solo Exitos Tour is exactly what it promises, nothing but the hits, an evening of the ballads that soundtracked a generation of first dances and long-distance phone calls. Friday, November 27, 2026, Pechanga Arena in San Diego. Dress up, bring the person who makes you sentimental, and come let one of Latin pop's great voices wring every emotion out of you. This is a night for singing along with your whole chest to songs you didn't realize you still knew by heart. Bring tissues and someone to hold. Pure romance, live.

Back-to-back sets are the only format in electronic music that is genuinely unrepeatable. Two people trading records in real time, each trying to answer what the other just did, means the night cannot be rehearsed and has never happened before and will not happen again in that order. When it goes well the crowd can hear the argument. Hostile runs bass nights at a small East Hollywood room and has built a reputation on booking exactly this — pairings rather than headliners. Putting Benda and Vastive on one deck for a long stretch is a deliberate choice about texture; both work the heavier, more mechanical end of dubstep, so rather than contrast you get escalation. The room is the other half of it. The Vermont holds a couple hundred people, which for bass music is the correct number — sub frequencies in a large hall dissipate, and in a small one they are structural. You feel the set in your ribs rather than hear it. Nine PM to two AM on Friday November 27, the night after Thanksgiving, which is historically the best-attended and worst-organized night of anyone's year. This one is organized. The Vermont, 1020 North Vermont Avenue.

Nov 27 – Nov 28, 2026 from $20 Teragram Ballroom, 1234 W 7th St, …

Picture a nightclub at ten on the Friday after Thanksgiving where the drop is the key change in Defying Gravity and six hundred people scream it at a ceiling. That is the whole product and it is not a joke - it is a real touring club night that sells out rooms across the country because it solved a problem nobody was addressing: theatre kids grew up, still want to go out, and do not want to hear house music. So the DJ plays Hamilton into Mamma Mia into Rent, the floor knows every lyric and every gesture, and strangers perform choreography at each other with total sincerity. Go with one friend who did drama and watch a version of them you have not met. Twenty-one and over, late start, and the crowd arrives already knowing what it is - which is what makes it work. Teragram Ballroom, downtown Los Angeles, the night after the holiday.

Wear black. Nobody tells you to, everybody does it anyway, and standing in a small dark room full of people who all made that decision alone is the closest some of us get to church. The tribute the faithful actually endorse plays Personal Jesus, Enjoy the Silence, and the entire synth-drenched catalog that scored a generation's beautiful gloom, note for note and without a shred of irony. A Nine Inch Nails tribute shares the bill, which tells you precisely which corner of San Diego is going to be in that room. And the room matters: a dive small enough that singing every word with your whole chest is not a choice, it is what the space is for. The Casbah on Kettner, a Saturday night late in the year. Bring your fellow devotee, and reach out and touch faith.

Nov 28, 2026 Lodge Room, 104 N Avenue 56, Los A…

Grief written down carefully enough stops being self-indulgent and starts being useful to other people, which is the transaction at the center of this catalog. Rundle came up through Los Angeles heavy music, played in bands loud enough to damage hearing, and makes solo records that are quieter and considerably more frightening. The guitar playing is in open tunings that ring in ways standard tuning cannot, and live she performs largely in the dark. Rooms go completely silent. Her audience crosses metal, folk, and the general population of people having a hard year, which produces one of the more unusual crowd compositions in music. Highland Park's upstairs Masonic hall is the right scale and the right acoustics for it. Music at 8:00 PM at 104 N Avenue 56, the Saturday after Thanksgiving. Coming home to a room like this at the end of a holiday weekend is its own kind of correct.

The Carpenters Songbook: At Christmas
Nov 29, 2026 from $40 Balboa Theatre, 868 Fourth Ave, Sa…

Some voices are load-bearing. Karen Carpenter's is one - it holds up an entire idea of what December sounded like in a specific set of American houses, and people who were not alive for any of it still know every phrase, because it followed them through supermarkets and car radios until it became weather. The show does not pretend to be her. That matters, and it is the thing that makes or breaks a production like this: the arrangements are the originals, played by a live band, and the singing serves the songs rather than impersonating the person. What gets people is usually not the famous one. It is a deep cut somebody in the row behind you did not expect to hear, followed by a very particular silence. The audience skews older and sings along quietly, which is its own thing to witness. A Sunday night at the end of November, seven o'clock, at the smaller of downtown San Diego's two old theatres.

Jonas Brothers: The Burning Up Tour All Over Again — Viejas Arena, San Diego
Nov 30, 2026 5500 Canyon Crest Drive, San Diego…

You remember exactly where you were when you first heard 'Burnin' Up.' You were in a car, or a bedroom, or standing in a crowd that hadn't figured out yet that this band would define a generation. Now the Jonas Brothers are recreating that tour — not just playing the songs, but rebuilding the show — and they're bringing it to San Diego. The Burning Up Tour All Over Again hits Viejas Arena on November 30. This isn't a nostalgia act playing greatest hits between new material nobody asked for. This is a full recreation of the 2008 tour that made them stadium-level famous, reimagined for arenas in 2026. The setlist leans into the catalog that matters: 'Year 3000,' 'S.O.S.,' 'Burnin' Up,' 'Lovebug' — the songs that soundtracked the transition from Myspace to whatever came next. Special guests include All Time Low, Magnus Ferrell, and Franklin Jonas at select dates. Viejas Arena holds around 12,000 and sits on the San Diego State campus at 5500 Canyon Crest Drive — the kind of venue where even the back row feels like part of the show. Tickets are available through Ticketmaster. This is a Monday night show with a 7:30 PM start — a rare weeknight arena concert in San Diego that's worth building an evening around. If you were a Jonas Brothers fan in 2008, this isn't a trip down memory lane. It's a chance to stand in that crowd again, except this time you actually appreciate what you're hearing.

Nov 30, 2026 Soda Bar, 3615 El Cajon Blvd, San …

Psychobilly is a genre almost nobody stumbles into by accident — you get handed it, usually by one person, usually around sixteen, and then it stays. This is the band that invented it, in England, in 1980, out of rockabilly played too fast and horror movies watched too often. The rule their following adopted decades ago is that only the band matters and politics stay outside, which produced one of the most stubbornly self-contained scenes in music. Forty-odd years on the founder is still leading it and the upright bass is still doing the heavy lifting. Rooms for this are full of quiffs and people who have flown in. The San Diego bar on El Cajon Boulevard is small, dark, and exactly the correct scale. Music at 8:00 PM, doors an hour earlier, twenty-one and over. Monday nights in this city are usually dead, and the people who fill one for a band like this all know exactly who else is going to be there.

Los Angeles Kings vs. Vegas Golden Knights
Dec 1, 2026 Crypto.com Arena, 1111 S Figueroa …

Tuesday night at Crypto.com Arena, the Kings welcome the Vegas Golden Knights for an early-December Pacific Division rivalry game that opens a long homestand. The Kings-Knights matchup has become one of the most anticipated on the Western Conference calendar — Vegas brings a traveling fanbase loud enough to make any arena feel contested, gold jerseys scattered through the lower bowl, and the Kings faithful answer in kind with a defensive intensity that turns every neutral-zone battle into a statement. The ice at Crypto.com Arena sits right in the heart of downtown LA, surrounded by the same restaurants and bars that fuel the Lakers pregame scene, but hockey nights carry a different edge: smaller, more dedicated crowds, tighter sightlines from every level, and a sport that rewards attention with violence and beauty in equal measure. December is when the NHL season starts to reveal who is real and who is pretending, and a divisional game against Vegas is a measuring stick nobody in the building takes lightly. Puck drops at 7:00 PM.

The Residents — Eskimo Live!
Dec 1, 2026 Belly Up Tavern, 143 S Cedros Ave,…

For fifty years The Residents have made music that refuses to explain itself — eyeball-helmeted, genre-allergic, and committed to the idea that art should make you uncomfortable in ways you cannot quite name. Eskimo Live! resurrects one of their strangest works: a 1979 concept album imagining the interior lives of Arctic peoples, rendered through atonal chanting, wind-machine drones, and rhythms that sound like they were recorded inside an iceberg. Hearing it on a studio album is disorienting. Hearing it performed live, in a room, with people around you who chose to be there on a Tuesday night — that is something else entirely. This is the final date of the rescheduled North American tour, which means every accumulated improvisation and accident from the previous months collapses into one last performance. Opening the night is Rushadicus the Infamous Cello Goblín, which is exactly the kind of opener The Residents deserve. $35 advance, general admission seating. Belly Up Tavern, 143 S Cedros Ave, Solana Beach. Tuesday, December 1, 2026, 7:00 PM.

Squirrel Nut Zippers — Christmas Caravan 2026

December has a sound, and for a certain kind of person it is not Bing Crosby or Mariah Carey — it is a trombone sliding into a minor key while a standup bass walks a line that makes you want to order a whiskey neat in a room full of strangers. The Squirrel Nut Zippers have been making that version of the holidays real since the mid-nineties, when their hot jazz revival turned a generation of alt-rock kids into swing dancers overnight. The Christmas Caravan is their annual lap through the country, and it lands at the Belly Up on a Wednesday night — the kind of midweek show where the audience skews toward people who planned this, not people who stumbled in. Expect brass, expect stomp, expect the kind of warmth that only happens when the music is older than everyone playing it and the room is small enough that the bell of the trombone is pointed directly at your table. $45 advance. Belly Up Tavern, 143 S Cedros Ave, Solana Beach. Wednesday, December 2, 2026, 7:30 PM.

Grief that arrives early reorganizes a person, and the songs on this project are about living in the reorganized version rather than about the event itself. Lexi Vega writes them in Los Angeles, quiet and precise, drums programmed then replayed, the kind of record people put on alone and then cannot recommend to anyone without over-explaining. She has spent years as a drummer for other people, which is audible in how the songs are built from the rhythm outward rather than the melody down. Live, with a full band, they get considerably bigger than the recordings prepare you for. The San Diego room on Kettner Boulevard is a small, dark, famously well-run club that has been the center of this city's music for decades. Music at 8:00 PM, twenty-one and over, on a Wednesday. Nights like this are how San Diego keeps finding out which of its neighbors have been listening to the same thing.

Dec 3, 2026 $40+ Balboa Theatre, 868 Fourth Ave, Sa…

The first time a full mariachi ensemble lands a chord in a room with plaster walls, something happens in your throat before you have decided how you feel about it. These are songs most people first heard at a wedding, or a funeral, or through a kitchen doorway on a Sunday. Hearing them played at this level changes the register entirely. José Hernández built an ensemble that reaches for the symphony without ever letting go of the folk tradition it came from — the most awarded and most ambitious group in the genre, having shared stages with Selena, Vicente Fernández, and Luis Miguel. What comes back out is concert art made from music your family already knows by heart. The gilded Balboa Theatre downtown is exactly the right room for it, all those horns ringing off the historic walls. Dress up a little. Bring three generations. Watch your grandmother mouth every word without once looking at the stage.

You know the feeling when a horn section hits and your body moves before your brain gives permission — that involuntary shoulder thing, the one you cannot fake. Ripe has been weaponizing that reflex for years, blending funk, rock, and pop into sets that turn every venue into a dance floor whether there is one or not. The seven-piece from Boston plays with the kind of tight, sweaty energy that only comes from a band that grew up performing in basements and college parties before graduating to proper tours. Their Play the Game Fall Tour rolls into the Music Box on a Thursday, which means the crowd will be people who specifically chose this over an early night — and they will be right. The Music Box's low ceiling and wood-paneled walls were built for exactly this volume, and the kind of funk Ripe plays rewards a room where nobody can stand still. PAX Unplugged 2026 — Philadelphia, PA
Dec 4 – Dec 7, 2026 Pennsylvania Convention Center, 11…

Three days in Philadelphia in December where 40,000 people bring board games, card games, miniatures, and roleplaying campaigns. PAX Unplugged is the largest dedicated tabletop gaming floor in America. The experience at PAX Unplugged is unlike any other convention on the American calendar. The main show floor stretches across the convention center's enormous exhibit hall — rows of publishers demonstrating unreleased games, free-play libraries with thousands of titles available to check out and bring to any open table, and tournament halls running competitive and casual formats simultaneously. The tabletop RPG hall operates all four days — Dungeon Masters running games, new systems getting their first public playtests. You can sit down at a table with strangers and be deep inside an adventure within ten minutes. The community here is self-selected for exactly this openness: people who came to Philadelphia in December to play games with other people who came to Philadelphia in December to play games. Worth it? If you play tabletop games in any format — board games with family, Dungeons & Dragons with friends, Magic: The Gathering competitively — PAX Unplugged is the one event that puts everything you care about in one room simultaneously. Publishers premiere new games here first. Designers are on the floor demoing their own creations. Competitive players converge on the same tournament halls. The identity gate is simple: if games played around a table are how you experience community, this is where your community gathers every December. The Pennsylvania Convention Center connects via enclosed walkway to multiple hotels — booking hotel before registration opens is essential, as nearby properties sell out within hours of badge sales going live. Philadelphia's transit system (SEPTA) provides subway access to the convention center from major neighborhoods and the airport (Airport Line → Center City). Badges sell in tiers; 4-day badges sell fastest. The Library of Games (free-play checkout) has no extra charge — one of the best systems at any convention for trying new titles without commitment. Pack layers; Philadelphia in December is cold, and the convention center's cavernous exhibit hall runs warmer than the streets outside. In an entertainment landscape built around passive consumption, tens of thousands of people travel to Philadelphia each December to play games with each other. The ticket is participation, not observation. December in Philadelphia.
