TYLA: The A*POP World Tour — Viejas Arena, San Diego
Dec 15, 2026 5500 Canyon Crest Dr, San Diego, C…

Tyla went from a South African teenager making music in her bedroom to the first African artist to win a Grammy for Best African Music Performance in a single album cycle, and the A*POP World Tour is the global victory lap. At Viejas Arena at San Diego State, the sound that blended amapiano with pop finds a room full of people who discovered it on TikTok and stayed because the music was better than the algorithm that surfaced it. The production matches the ambition — this is not a club set with arena lighting bolted on, but a full-scale show designed for the global stage by an artist who understands that being the biggest new voice in African pop means every performance has to justify the title. The choreography is tight. The energy is relentless. The crowd will know every word to Water and everything that came after it. Tuesday, December 15. 8:00 PM. Viejas Arena, 5500 Canyon Crest Dr, San Diego.

American tours by this artist happen rarely enough that adding a second night in the same room is less a scheduling decision than an acknowledgment that people flew in. The music is the same peculiar thing either night — slack guitar, deadpan falsetto, arrangements that sound like a resort band playing something faintly sinister — and it does not resemble anything else currently touring. He dissolved a much louder band at its peak to start doing this. The Tuesday date will be the quieter of the two and probably the better one. Highland Park's upstairs Masonic hall, wood floors, a balcony that fills late. Music at 8:00 PM at 104 N Avenue 56. Three separate audiences claim this artist and they mostly do not know the others exist until they are all in the same room.

Music recorded so quietly that you have to lean toward it is doing something deliberate — it makes the listener come to the song rather than the other way around. This duo has built a substantial following on exactly that, slow tempos, buried vocals, guitar that sounds like it was recorded in a stairwell. They came out of the same eastside Los Angeles apartment-recording world that produced a lot of the current wave and have stayed at a scale where the shows still feel like a secret. Live it is louder than expected and the low end does most of the emotional work. Highland Park's upstairs hall on a Wednesday in December, wood floors, a few hundred people. Music at 8:00 PM at 104 N Avenue 56. Bands who stay this size on purpose build audiences who feel responsible for them, and the room reflects it.

Dave Koz and Friends Christmas Tour 2026 — Balboa Theatre, San Diego
Dec 17, 2026 Balboa Theatre, 868 4th Ave, San D…

December leaves gaps in people. You notice them in the car, or standing in a parking lot at night, and no amount of mall music fills them, because mall music was never trying to. This is the annual show that does. Smooth jazz and holiday arrangements played by a bandleader who brings friends every year, and the friends are always the kind of players who make you sit up straighter without knowing why you did. The room does work too — a theater from 1924, ornate plaster overhead, acoustics from an era when a hall had to carry sound on its own. The lobby fills with people dressed up for the first time since Thanksgiving. The Balboa Theatre downtown, doors at 6:30 PM, show at 7:30 PM. This is the show your parents take you to the first year you are old enough to appreciate it, and the show you take them to the first year you realize they need it. Do not wait for the second one.

Noel Noel — San Diego Symphony Holiday Concert at The Rady Shell
Every day · Next Dec 18 The Rady Shell at Jacobs Park, 124…

When a brass section plays a carol outdoors in December, the music doesn't bounce off walls and come back to you compressed. It goes out into the night air and keeps going, mixing with the salt and the cold and the ambient hum of a city settling into the holidays. That's what Noel Noel is — the San Diego Symphony's annual holiday concert, performed at The Rady Shell at Jacobs Park where the bay sits behind the stage and the December sky sits above it. The program is a mix of orchestral holiday arrangements, singalong carols, and the kind of show-stopping vocal moments that remind you why live music exists. This isn't background music at a mall. This is a full symphony orchestra playing holiday repertoire with the same intensity they bring to Beethoven, because the music deserves it and so do you. The crowd is families, couples, groups who made this the anchor of their December calendar years ago and aren't stopping now. Three performances: Friday, December 18 at 7:30 PM, Saturday, December 19 at 6:00 PM, and Sunday, December 20 at 4:30 PM. The Rady Shell at Jacobs Park, 1245 Seventh Ave, San Diego. Tickets through the San Diego Symphony box office.

Three Los Angeles projects on one bill in the desert reads like a coincidence and is closer to a family reunion — these are people who have played on each other's records, share producers, and came up through the same small rooms in the eastside. Illuminati Hotties makes the loudest and funniest music of the three; Baths has been making meticulous electronic pop since the blog era and has a following that treats those records as private property; Mini Trees writes the quiet ones. Together it is a fair snapshot of what one corner of this city actually sounds like right now. Watching that travel two hours into the high desert and land in a wooden saloon is the specific pleasure on offer. Music at 8:30 PM in Pioneertown. Bills like this are how a scene shows a town what it has been building, and how the people in it find out who else drove out.

San Diego Gulls vs Coachella Valley Firebirds
Dec 19, 2026 $22+ Pechanga Arena, 3500 Sports Arena …

Two hours of freeway and an enormous amount of attitude separate these two buildings, and everybody inside both of them knows it. When the Firebirds come to Pechanga the crowd gets rowdy early and the hockey gets chippy fast, which is what actually makes a rivalry — not history, just a genuine unwillingness to lose to those people specifically. This is one of the loudest nights on the calendar, in December, with the holidays sitting in the air and nobody in the building interested in being polite about it. Sit near the glass if you can. Minor-league hockey at this level is fast, physical, and cheap enough that you can bring three people without thinking about it, and the intensity is not scaled down at all. Wear orange. Pick a side out loud. This one always delivers.

Playing music from the 1930s without it becoming a costume party requires knowing the material well enough to be careless with it, and that is the line this performer has walked for two decades — ragtime, western swing, early country, delivered by somebody who is genuinely funny on stage and not remotely precious about the history. The band swings hard. There is a real revival of pre-war American music happening at the moment, driven largely by younger players, and he has been doing it since before that was a scene to join. Live he talks to the room constantly. Highland Park's upstairs Masonic hall has the wood and the warmth for it. Music at 8:00 PM at 104 N Avenue 56, a Saturday in December. The people who follow this music go to a lot of these nights and tend to know one another by sight.

Rave Jesus - Rave Revival Fall Tour
Dec 19, 2026 $20 Teragram Ballroom, 1234 W 7th St, …

Nobody warns you that leaving a faith community costs you the music too. You can walk away from the doctrine and still catch yourself, years later, missing the specific physical fact of a room full of people singing the same thing at once with their eyes shut. Rave Jesus is the strangest possible answer to that, and it works. Hard dance production under genuinely earnest worship writing, played to a room that is half people who never left and half people who did. The all-ages door matters here in a way it does not at most shows — it means the fifteen-year-old who came with the youth group and the thirty-year-old who has not been to church in a decade are on the same floor. Twenty dollars in advance is club-night pricing for something that behaves more like a revival. Whatever it is, it is not cynical, and that is rare enough to be worth the drive. Saturday, December 19. Doors 7 p.m., show 8. Teragram Ballroom, 1234 West 7th Street. All ages.

Before reggae there was rocksteady, that impossibly sweet, slow-swaying sound of late-60s Jamaica, and Keith and Tex are among its last living legends, the duo behind Stop That Train and Tonight, harmonies that have soundtracked romance for sixty years. Hearing them in person, backed by the Dub Club sound system and joined by Keith Poppin, is a genuine piece of living history, a December night for the connoisseurs who know exactly how rare this is. Saturday, December 19, 2026, 9 PM, the Echoplex in Echo Park, 21+. Come for the vintage harmonies, the deep bass, the sound-system faithful, and a slow skank with someone you love. Bring the friend who collects vinyl. This is the back-of-the-store treasure LA's reggae underground has been guarding since 2000. Rocksteady forever.

Willi Carlisle – The Universal Bubba Tour
Dec 19 – Dec 20, 2026 Pappy & Harriet's, 53688 Pioneerto…

A folk singer who was a poet and a square dance caller first performs differently than one who came up playing bars — the phrasing is built for a room that is listening rather than drinking, and the talking between songs is as constructed as the songs. Carlisle writes about rural America without either sneering at it or romanticizing it, which is a needle almost nobody threads, and does it while playing accordion and fiddle and occasionally getting a room to sing in parts. He is genuinely funny on stage, which is what keeps the heavier material bearable. A high desert saloon two nights before the holidays, wooden floor, cold outside, a crowd that drove out. Music at 9:30 PM in Pioneertown, a Saturday. Folk audiences out here take the tradition seriously enough to sing when asked, and that is what the night turns into.

Metal kids who discovered dubstep did not stop being metal kids. They just found a genre where the drop does what a breakdown used to do, and the crossover has been quietly one of the largest in American youth music for a decade. Danny Howland built Voyd out of exactly that overlap — riffs, growls, and a stage persona borrowed wholesale from black metal iconography, applied to bass music. The crowd headbangs rather than dances, and the pit behaves like a metal pit, which genuinely confuses people who wandered in expecting a club night. A week before Christmas in the Gaslamp, which means the room will be full of people home from school with nowhere to be in the morning. Saturday the nineteenth of December, doors at ten.

Some rivalries were assembled by a television schedule. This one predates the merger. These teams have been at each other since the American Football League existed, which means the grudge is older than almost everybody in the building and has been handed down rather than chosen, usually by a father or an uncle who is still, decades on, unreasonably bitter about a specific afternoon in the 1970s. Denver travels better than almost anyone in the conference and the drive down is short enough that they arrive rested and already arguing. Four days before Christmas, with the season either alive or long since decided, you get one of the last honest division games on the calendar in front of a crowd with nothing polite left to say to each other. Allegiant Stadium, Sunday, December 20, 1:25 in the afternoon. If you have somebody in your family who still holds a grudge about this fixture, this is the year to finally take them.

Pentatonix: Christmas in the City Tour — Viejas Arena, San Diego

Pentatonix made a cappella cool by refusing to pretend it was anything other than what it is — five voices, no instruments, and the kind of vocal arrangements that make audio engineers ask how. The Christmas in the City Tour is the annual holiday tradition that fills arenas with people who came for the harmonies and stay for the moment when the bass drops lower than any amplified kick drum and 12,000 people feel it in their chest. At Viejas Arena the holiday setlist gets the full production treatment: lights, staging, and the kind of vocal precision that makes auto-tune feel like an insult. The Christmas catalog alone would fill a show, but Pentatonix weaves in the hits from every era — because a group that can make Daft Punk sound like a hymn does not need to stay in one lane. Bring the family. The kids will be amazed. The adults will cry. Both reactions are correct. Sunday, December 20. 6:00 PM. Viejas Arena, 5500 Canyon Crest Dr, San Diego.

You have argued about this film. Everyone has. Somebody at some point told you the Keira Knightley cue-card scene is indefensible and somebody else cried at the airport montage in front of you, and the argument is now an annual fixture of your December whether you want it or not. What a live orchestra does to it is strange and worth reporting: the score stops being wallpaper. Craig Armstrong wrote something genuinely sad under all that Christmas, and when forty musicians play it in a room instead of through a laptop, the scenes people mock get very quiet and the ones people love get almost unbearable. The film runs complete and uncut on the screen above the players. The crowd laughs in the right places, loudly, because a cinema full of people who chose this is a different animal to a sofa. Go with the person you have the argument with. Balboa Theatre, downtown San Diego, a Sunday evening five days before Christmas, seven o'clock.

December 26th is the flattest day on the calendar. The build-up is spent, the wrapping paper is bagged, somebody's relative is still on the couch, and the restlessness that arrives around four in the afternoon has no obvious cure. Driving to Sunset for a guitar solo is a cure. Don Dokken and company open a six-night stretch where this club gives each evening to a different band that mattered back when Los Angeles rock was the biggest thing the city exported. This is the loudest, best-attended night of the run and the one where the balcony actually fills up. A detail that changes how you plan the evening: the stairs to the balcony are narrow and the good rail spots along the front go inside the first twenty minutes after doors, so the people who care about sightlines arrive early and eat afterward instead. Saturday the 26th, and the doors go at 7:30 rather than the usual six.

Enuff Z'Nuff, Pretty Boy Floyd, The Throbs
Dec 28, 2026 $33+ Whisky a Go Go, 8901 W Sunset Blvd…

The week between Christmas and New Year's has no shape to it. Work is theoretical, the leftovers are on their fourth appearance, and somewhere in a closet there is a shoebox of ticket stubs from when you were seventeen and the Sunset Strip was the center of the known world. Nobody in your house wants to hear about it again. Here is a room full of people who want to hear about nothing else. Three bands who were actually on that Strip when it meant something, stacked on one bill on a Monday night, in the club where most of it happened. Enuff Z'Nuff still play the Chicago power-pop that got them filed under hairspray for thirty-five years. Pretty Boy Floyd have never once apologized. The Throbs open. What the regulars know: the floor here is small enough that the stage monitors bleed straight into the crowd, so you end up hearing the show roughly the way the singer hears it. Doors swing at six on Monday the 28th; the room is upstairs off the Strip.

Bandfest 2027
Dec 29, 2026 $26.50 Robinson Stadium, Pasadena City Co…

Three days before a hundred million people watch them go by in ninety seconds, the bands play their whole show. That is the trade nobody tells you about: on Colorado Boulevard a band gets one block and one corner, and everything they built over a year of six-a.m. rehearsals is gone before the float behind them clears the turn. On a community college football field in Pasadena, they get the entire field show — the drill, the soloists, the closer, the part where the drumline turns around. Bands travel from across the country and from Mexico and Japan to be here, and the parents in the stands have usually flown farther than the kids. The tell that you are among your own people is the sound after a difficult passage lands: not polite applause, but the specific roar of several hundred people who know exactly how hard that was. Gates open an hour before each show. Free parking sits in Structure 4 off Del Mar. Robinson Stadium, Pasadena City College, December 29 and 30.
