Lestat's Monday Night Open Mic — September 14
Sep 14, 2026 Lestat's Coffee House, 3343 Adams …

Lestat's Coffee House on Adams Avenue runs a music open mic every Monday evening — sign-ups at 5:30 PM, show from 6 to 8 PM, no cover charge, all genres welcome. It is one of the longest-running open mics in San Diego and the most accessible entry point for anyone who wants to perform in front of a real audience for the first time. The Monday open mic at Lestat's draws a mix of regulars who have been coming for years and first-timers who found the listing and decided to try. The audience is respectful, the room is a coffee house (which means quieter and more attentive than a bar), and the format gives every performer a fair shot. Singer-songwriters, acoustic bands, solo instrumentalists, the occasional comedian or spoken word performer — the diversity of what shows up on any given Monday is one of its virtues. Lestat's Coffee House, 3343 Adams Ave, San Diego, CA 92116. Normal Heights neighborhood. Every Monday, sign-ups 5:30 PM, show 6-8 PM. Free admission. Coffee, tea, and light food available throughout. Street parking on Adams Ave and surrounding Normal Heights streets. The 11 bus runs along Adams Ave. The open mic is an institution in the Normal Heights music community — the people who run it have been doing this for a long time.

Fantastic Fest 2026 — Austin, TX
Sep 17 – Sep 24, 2026 Alamo Drafthouse South Lamar, 1120…

Fantastic Fest programs horror, science fiction, and genre film that wouldn't survive a studio committee. Eight days at the Alamo Drafthouse in Austin, September 17–24, where winning Best Film means your movie is genuinely frightening. Eight days of screenings at the Alamo Drafthouse, which means dinner and drinks at your seat during the film. The selection spans international premieres and US debuts, with a curatorial ethos that prizes the strange over the safe. The programming deliberately refuses to be rigid about genre: the umbrella covers anything that warrants the label weird. Secret screenings are a Fantastic Fest signature — you sit down not knowing what you are about to see, and the audience often does not learn the title until moments before it begins. Beyond films: trivia nights, drag shows, karaoke, live bands, and stunts that have included burying audience members alive and hosting sideshow performances. The festival has been called Austin's strangest week of the year — which is saying something. If you have opinions about horror, science fiction, or cult cinema — especially if those opinions run ahead of the mainstream — Fantastic Fest is your event. Films that premiere here regularly go on to win awards and achieve strong box office returns months later. The badge experience includes access to parties at the Highball, the venue adjacent to the Drafthouse. This is a festival for people who want to see what is coming before it arrives. Fan Badges cover the full eight-day festival. Second-Half Badges run September 21–24 and include parties and Highball access. Industry Badges provide daily press and industry screenings. Check fantasticfest.com for current availability — badge categories sell out early. Secret screening seats fill fastest; arrive early if you want one. The Alamo Drafthouse South Lamar runs multiple simultaneous screenings across several auditoriums, giving you real choices when scheduling conflicts arise. Fantastic Fest in 2026 is the 21st edition of an event that started as a scrappy Austin experiment and became the definitive American destination for genre cinema. In a moment when horror and science fiction dominate global streaming conversations, Fantastic Fest remains the place where the most adventurous versions of those genres get their first real audience. Sitting in that Drafthouse auditorium surrounded by people who drove in from five states for this week is the feeling that makes the badge worth every dollar.

Queen Bee's Open Mic Night — September 17
Sep 17 – Sep 18, 2026 Queen Bee's Art & Cultural Center,…

Queen Bee's Art & Cultural Center hosts a bi-monthly open mic on the 1st and 3rd Thursdays of each month at 8 PM — San Diego's most genuinely community-driven open mic, covering music, comedy, poetry, spoken word, and whatever else someone brings to a room that takes all of it seriously. Queen Bee's is a community arts space in North Park, not a bar with a side open mic. The difference matters: the crowd shows up for the performers rather than the other way around, which means the open mic has a different energy than most. People who have never performed in front of an audience have done their first set here. People who perform regularly keep coming back because the room is honest. The format is simple: sign up before the show, get your five to seven minutes, be respectful of the other performers. The genres are genuinely mixed — a singer-songwriter might follow a stand-up comedian who follows a slam poet. The quality varies, which is the point. Some of the best sets come from people who do not look like they are about to do something remarkable. Queen Bee's Art & Cultural Center, 3925 Ohio St, San Diego, CA 92104. North Park neighborhood. The 1st and 3rd Thursday of each month at 8 PM. Low or no cover. Street parking on Ohio St and surrounding North Park streets. Check openmicsandiego.com or Queen Bee's social media for same-night confirmation.

Practical Magic 2
Sep 18 – Sep 20, 2026 From $15 Major theaters nationwide, USA

Practical Magic 2 opens September 18th, 2026 at theaters nationwide from $15. The original Practical Magic arrived in 1998 and found its audience not on opening weekend but in the years after — the people who watched it repeatedly, who quoted it, who built an affection for it that the box office numbers never predicted. That audience has been waiting. A sequel to a cult film is one of the few movie events where the opening weekend crowd is not casual. These are the people who saw the original enough times that they know exactly what they want from this one, and who will be vocal about whether they got it. The theater on September 18th will be full of that specific intensity — part anticipation, part protectiveness, part genuine excitement that this is happening at all. From $15. Opening weekend. See it before the discourse shapes how you see it. The conversation around a cult sequel moves fast and has opinions before most people have tickets. Be in the room for the first watch. The shared experience of seeing something this anticipated with people who cared the same way is not replicable once the initial weekend passes.

Resident Evil
Sep 18 – Sep 20, 2026 From $15 Major theaters nationwide, USA

Capcom's Resident Evil franchise returns to theaters September 18th, 2026 — a new film iteration of the survival horror property that has outlasted every attempt to reduce it to a single genre, a single formula, or a single tone. From $15 at theaters nationwide. Resident Evil in theaters is its own specific experience. The audience that shows up for a Resident Evil opening weekend is not casual — they are franchise-literate, they have opinions about adaptation choices before the first frame, and when the film delivers something that earns it, the room reacts collectively in a way that watching alone never produces. When it delivers a scare well, thirty people flinch in unison and the nervous laughter that follows is part of the film. See it opening weekend. The conversation around a franchise adaptation is loudest in the first days — the debates that start in the lobby, continue in the parking lot, and run through the group chat for a week are part of the experience the film creates. From $15 at theaters everywhere. Find your local showing. The horror is better in the dark, with other people who are choosing to be afraid alongside you. Opening weekend disappears fast. Be in the room for the first one.

Ohana Festival returns to Doheny State Beach in Dana Point for its annual three-day run on the Pacific Coast. The festival is known for its intimate atmosphere: even headliners feel accessible at Ohana, with ocean breeze and sunset views turning every set into something cinematic. The site at Doheny State Beach is flat and wide-open, making it easy to navigate between two stages without missing anything important. Doheny State Beach is located in Dana Point, about 60 miles south of Los Angeles and 30 miles north of San Diego. Shuttle service runs from nearby park-and-ride lots. Multiple hotels and Airbnbs are available along the Dana Point harbor within walking distance. Camping is not available on-site but the surrounding area has options. New York Film Festival 2026 — New York, NY
Sep 25 – Oct 12, 2026 Film at Lincoln Center, 165 W 65th…

Eighteen days at Lincoln Center in the fall. The New York Film Festival has been selecting films without competitive categories since 1963 — no awards, just the films the programmers decided mattered this year. The Main Slate premieres at Alice Tully Hall in Lincoln Center — a 1,000-seat hall with some of the best sight lines and acoustics of any cinema venue in America. The post-screening Q&As with directors and cast are NYFF's most distinctive feature: these are not promotional appearances. They are genuine conversations about how films get made, what they mean, and what the filmmakers were reaching toward. The press conference format becomes, in the right moment, something more interesting than either party expected. The festival also programs a parallel section, Convergence, dedicated to immersive and experimental work, and a Revivals series that presents restored classic films alongside the new work. NYFF is for the film enthusiast who treats cinema as the art form it is — not content, not IP, but a form of human expression that requires the kind of attention the festival demands and rewards. It is for the person who wants to see the films that will define the awards conversation before the campaign season begins. It is for anyone who has sat in a dark room and felt something shift in how they understood the world. If any of those sentences describe you, the NYFF calendar is worth knowing. New York in late September is mild — jacket weather, perfect for walking the Lincoln Center campus between screenings. Single-ticket sales open to the public approximately two weeks before the festival; passes go on sale earlier. Film at Lincoln Center, 165 West 65th Street, is on the Upper West Side, accessible by subway (1 train to 66th Street/Lincoln Center). Hotel options throughout Manhattan; Airbnb in the Upper West Side neighborhoods puts you walking distance from the venues. The New York Film Festival earns its place on Falkor's Nation's Best list because it is the clearest evidence that serious cinema remains a living thing — that somewhere, every year, the world's most accomplished filmmakers are making work that demands to be seen in the right room with the right attention. The 64th edition will include films that win major awards, films that define the critical conversation of 2027, and films that haven't been made in the mode before. Knowing which films they are before anyone else is the only advantage the NYFF calendar gives you. Tickets and passes at filmlinc.org.

The Horror Show — Academy Museum
Sep 27 – Jul 25, 2027 Academy Museum of Motion Pictures,…

The Academy Museum of Motion Pictures is the institution that holds the history of cinema — every artifact, every production archive, every piece of evidence that the films you love were made by real people in real rooms. "The Horror Show" opens at 6067 Wilshire Blvd in Los Angeles, and it brings that institutional weight to the genre that deserves it most. Horror is the most technically demanding genre in film. The practical effects, the cinematography choices, the sound design decisions that make something frightening rather than merely dark — these are craft problems that the best horror filmmakers solved with ingenuity and intention. The Academy Museum exhibits the solutions: original props, behind-the-scenes materials, restored footage, and the curatorial framing that treats horror as the serious art form it is. Seeing the monster up close, understanding how the scare was built, walking through the artifacts of a genre you've watched in the dark for years — this is the exhibition that rewards the people who take horror seriously. Check academymuseum.org for ticket details and exhibition dates. September in Los Angeles means warm evenings and the museum district at its best. Plan to stay for the full exhibition. There is more here than one visit holds, and the building itself — Renzo Piano's glass and concrete and light — earns the trip before the first artifact.

Los Angeles Haunted Hayride 2026
Oct 1 – Nov 1, 2026 Paid - $30-$65 Old Zoo Picnic Area, Griffith Park…

The Los Angeles Haunted Hayride has been running in Griffith Park's Old Zoo Picnic Area every October since 2009. It is one of the most well-produced Halloween experiences in Southern California and the only haunted hayride format operating in the city of Los Angeles. The hayride itself is a tractor-pulled wagon moving through a 10-minute theatrical experience in the dark — actors, sets, and practical effects staged along a trail through the historic old zoo grounds. The abandoned bear grottoes and concrete animal enclosures that make up the Old Zoo are genuinely unsettling as a backdrop. The full event grounds also include a haunted maze, a campground area with food and drinks, carnival games, and the kind of Halloween village atmosphere that works as a standalone hangout separate from the ride itself. Many people come for the scene as much as the scares. The Haunted Hayride runs Thursday through Sunday evenings in October plus Halloween night. Timed tickets are strongly recommended — walk-up lines on weekend nights routinely exceed two hours. Griffith Park parking is free but fills early. Rideshare drop-offs work well.

Verity
Oct 2 – Oct 4, 2026 From $15 Major theaters nationwide, USA

Theaters nationwide. October 2nd. From $15. Verity — the adaptation of Colleen Hoover's psychological thriller, one of the most-read novels of the last three years — arriving in theaters with the weight of a book that climbed back to the top of bestseller lists through reader-to-reader word of mouth and hasn't stopped since. The Verity novel built its audience the way the best thrillers do: by making every person who finished it need to tell someone else immediately. The film carries that obligation into the theater — the audience is made up of people who have already been through the story once and want to see what the film does with it, and people being brought by those readers who couldn't stop talking about it. Both experiences are different. Neither is lesser. From $15 at theaters everywhere. October 2nd. The opening weekend of a BookTok-level thriller adaptation is the theatrical event where the conversation starts in real time — the theories, the reactions to what changed, the debate in the lobby about whether the ending means what you think it means. See it opening weekend, when the room is full and the conversation hasn't been settled yet.

Lucha de los Muertos 6: Jaula de la Muerte - Los Angeles
Oct 4, 2026 2811 E Olympic Blvd, Los Angeles, …

The most theatrical night of the East Los Lucha season lands on the first weekend of October, timed with the spirit of Dia de los Muertos. Lucha de los Muertos is where RJNPRODUCTIONS99 pulls out the stops: mask versus mask stakes, Jaula de la Muerte (Cage of Death) stipulations, face paint and calavera-inspired ring gear, and a crowd atmosphere that feels part wrestling show, part cultural celebration. This is the sixth installment, which means the lore is deep — rivalries that have been building across shows, fan favorites with histories in this building, and the kind of storytelling that makes independent wrestling compelling in a way that the national product has largely forgotten. If you've ever wondered what Lucha Libre looks like when the promotion actually cares about its audience, this is the answer. Don Quixote, 2811 E Olympic Blvd, East LA. October 4, 5 PM. Tickets on Eventbrite. Bring a mask if you have one — you won't be the only one. This show sells out every year. The Jaula de la Muerte match alone is worth the ticket price.
