LAcon V / Worldcon 2026
Aug 27 – Aug 31, 2026 From $125 Anaheim Convention Center, Anaheim…

The conversation that starts at a panel and is still going two hours later in a hotel lobby - between a first-timer and someone who has come every year since the 1970s - is the part of Worldcon nobody photographs, and it is the reason people build their August around it. If science fiction has genuinely shaped how you think, this is the room where the people who built the genre gather to decide what it becomes next. This is the 84th World Science Fiction Convention, founded in 1939, and it is where the Hugo Awards - the genre's highest honor - are presented. Five days of programming dense enough to require a spreadsheet: panels with authors whose books shaped how you see the world, an Art Show of original science fiction and fantasy illustration available for purchase, a Film Festival, and the Masquerade, one of the world's most ambitious costume competitions, where attendees spend months building a creation for a single stage walk. But the truest texture lives in the hallways, and the community here is multigenerational in a way almost no other genre event is. Every attending member votes on the Hugo ballot, which gives you a reason to read widely before you even arrive. If you have opinions about where the genre is going and want to be in the room where those conversations happen, this is that room - not a pop-culture spectacle but a literary gathering with the scale to match. This is worth every dollar for the reader for whom the genre is a frame for understanding the world, not casual entertainment. A few practical notes. First-time attendees qualify for a $200 membership rate instead of the standard $250 adult price - register explicitly as a first-timer at lacon.org to save fifty dollars. The Hugo ceremony is a formal evening event; bring something nicer than a convention T-shirt. Programming is community-generated: attendees propose and vote on panels, so the schedule reflects genuine fan priorities rather than a corporate team. Book the Hilton Anaheim or Anaheim Marriott to stay in the convention hotels and maximize hallway time. The Art Show sells original work, so budget separately for it. Worldcon returns to Los Angeles for the first time since 2006, at a moment when science fiction's reach - through streaming, gaming, and AI - has never been broader while the literary community that seeded all of it has never been more visible. The writers in those panel rooms are the ones shaping how space travel, artificial intelligence, and social change will feel to readers a generation from now. That conversation happens August 27-31 at the Anaheim Convention Center.

Anime Expo 2027 — Los Angeles Convention Center
Jul 1 – Jul 4, 2027 Los Angeles Convention Center, 120…

You will be tired in a way that feels earned. Four days, a hundred thousand people, and not one of them needs you to explain what you are talking about. The largest anime convention in North America takes the Los Angeles Convention Center over Fourth of July weekend and spills into the JW Marriott and the Ritz-Carlton beside it. Industry panels, screening rooms, autograph sessions with voice actors and composers, concerts that sell out weeks ahead. Studios from Japan use this as their main North American announcement stage — if a sequel or adaptation is being revealed, it often happens in a room you could be standing in. The exhibit hall carries imported merchandise and collaboration exclusives that surface nowhere else on the continent. Los Angeles Convention Center, 1201 S Figueroa St. Thursday through Sunday. Badges run from top-tier early-access down to single-day passes. Book the connected hotel corridor months out. Everyone who tells you that learned it the hard way.

Oceanside Sunset Market -- Summer 2026 Thursdays
Every Thursday · Next Oct 8 Free Coast Hwy & Pier View Way, Oceansi…

The Pacific is a block away. Every Thursday evening from 5 to 9 PM, the corner of Coast Highway and Pier View Way becomes the Oceanside Sunset Market — vendors, food, live music, and the light that only happens when you're that close to the water at that hour. The beach-town market that runs when the day is actually good. Local makers, artisans, food vendors, and the crowd that comes out because the evening earned it. The vendor mix is Oceanside-specific: local crafts, art, jewelry, produce, and the food vendors that the beach corridor supports. The live music stage runs throughout the evening. The Oceanside Pier is visible from the market — the setting does work the vendors don't have to. Free to attend. Parking available near the Pier. Every Thursday, May through September, 5-9 PM. Oceanside, California. The market runs through marine layer some evenings. The cooler Pacific air is part of the draw, not a reason to stay home.

Pacific Beach Night Market
Monthly · Next Nov 4 Free Bayard St and Garnet Ave, Pacific …

A hundred and fifty steps from the ocean, a corner of Pacific Beach turns into a block party that nobody had to organize you into. Fire pits going. Nine to twelve food vendors rotating week to week, so the thing you loved last time might be gone and the thing replacing it might be better. Live music that is genuinely local — acoustic sets, small bands, the occasional DJ. Games. A crowd of PB locals and students and people who simply wandered up from the beach still holding a towel. Past vendors have run birria tacos, banh mi, craft lemonade, Hawaiian shave ice, artisan pastries, small-batch hot sauces. A few craft sellers usually set up alongside. This is a neighborhood gathering, not a ticketed event. Free. No RSVP. You walk up. Bayard St and Garnet Ave, Pacific Beach. 5 to 9:30 PM. Bring a layer — it cools off fast after sunset, even in August.

Taste of Soul LA 2026
In 9 days · Oct 17 Free Crenshaw Blvd (Martin Luther King …

The smell reaches you before the stages do - barbecue and catfish and soul food covering a mile-plus of Crenshaw Boulevard, because every major Black-owned restaurant in South LA has a booth out here and the food is the center of the whole thing. For one Saturday in October, this stretch between Martin Luther King Jr. Boulevard and Leimert Park Village becomes one of the largest street festivals in Los Angeles. More than 300,000 people move through in a single day. The format is street vendors, restaurant booths, live music stages, a car show, health screenings, and community organization presence - but it is the food and the crowd that make it. Founded by the Los Angeles Sentinel, the oldest Black-owned newspaper in California, it has run for over two decades and stayed a genuine community institution: multigenerational, neighborhood-rooted, and enormous. This is Leimert Park and Crenshaw at their fullest. Free to attend. Crenshaw closes to traffic for the day. The Metro K Line stops at Leimert Park Village and is the easiest way in and out. Arrive early if you want to move - by noon the crowds are deep.

The market hosts live music from local musicians throughout the day. GLAM is free to attend and open to all ages. Shaded seating is available. The market runs 10 AM to 4 PM. The Haunted Parlour Room at the Reindeer Room
In 14 days · Oct 22 $55 Skypark, Pond Road, Lake Arrowhead…

A good ghost story needs a room that was already keeping secrets. Up in the San Bernardino Mountains, hidden inside SkyPark, there is a small speakeasy that spends most of the year doing cocktails and live music by reservation only, and for one night it hands the room over to a storytelling duo working prohibition-era legends. Guests are encouraged to turn up in their haunted best, 1920s speakeasy. The cocktails are built around the story rather than served beside it, with charcuterie and tastings between the acts, and the room is small enough that the storytellers will be close enough to make you flinch. Historic mountain-lodge bones, cocktail-lounge glamour, no stage to hide behind. Seating starts at 6:00 PM on October 22. Tickets are $55 per person, 21 and over, reservations required, and space is genuinely limited. The Reindeer Room keeps going on Friday and Saturday evenings all year with cocktail classes and themed nights, so the mountain holds more of this than one October evening.
