Hammer Summer Concert 2026 — Open Mike Eagle (August 19)

Rap that makes you lean in instead of back is rarer than it ought to be. His records have been called art rap since the first one — introspective, literary, frequently surreal, moving between music and visual art without ever announcing which one it is being. Which makes a museum courtyard exactly the right room. The live show is quiet in a way that forces attention; it does not work as background and it is not trying to. A crowd standing on stone at dusk in Westwood with the galleries still open behind them is the environment that material was built for, even if it took an art museum to notice. Happy hour first, main set after, outdoors on Wilshire, free and first-come. Bring the friend who keeps saying nobody is writing anything interesting anymore, and let him answer it in person.

Hammer Summer Concert 2026 — Very Be Careful (July 31)
Jul 31, 2026 Free Hammer Museum, 10899 Wilshire Blvd…

You cannot explain Colombian vallenato to someone in a paragraph - you have to stand in a courtyard at sunset while a seven-piece band drives it home on an accordion, and then they understand it in their body before their brain catches up. That is the whole gift of this night. Very Be Careful, the Los Angeles-based Colombian vallenato group that has been carrying the accordion-centered sound of Colombia's Caribbean coast to Southern California since the early 2000s, plays the Hammer courtyard in Westwood. They have filled venues twice this size; here it will be intimate. Vallenato is not salsa, and not cumbia as most Americans know it - it is older, more accordion-centered, rooted in the Colombian Caribbean coast, and this band is one of the best introductions to it anywhere in LA. Happy hour 6:30-7:30 PM. Concert at 7:30 PM. After-hours gallery access throughout the evening. Free admission, first-come, first-served. July 31, 2026 - 6:30 PM. Hammer Museum, 10899 Wilshire Blvd, Los Angeles, CA 90024.

Hammer Summer Concert 2026 — Dummy (July 17)
Jul 17, 2026 Free Hammer Museum, 10899 Wilshire Blvd…

The most underused space on the Westside might be a museum courtyard on a summer evening — an institution built on free admission, sitting quiet when it could be where the city's most interesting music converges. On July 17, the Hammer Summer Concerts series opens its 2026 season with Dummy, the Los Angeles rock band whose catalog crosses dream pop and guitar noise in a way that sounds exactly like it was made for a museum courtyard at dusk. The evening begins with a happy hour from 6:30 to 7:30 PM, with cocktails available and discounted drinks before the concert. The main set begins at 7:30 PM. After-hours gallery access runs through the evening — the Hammer's current exhibitions stay open, which means you can move between the music outside and the art inside. This is what free admission actually enables when the programming is committed. Free. First-come, first-served. RSVP encouraged but not required. Arrive by 7 PM to secure a good spot in the courtyard. July 17, 2026 — 6:30 PM. Hammer Museum, 10899 Wilshire Blvd, Los Angeles, CA 90024.

Jazz at LACMA 2026 — Free Friday Evenings at the Museum
Every Friday · Next Oct 9 Free 6067 Wilshire Blvd, Los Angeles, C…

Every Friday evening from spring through fall, the BP Grand Entrance at LACMA becomes a concert hall with no roof. The musicians aren't there because the pay is exceptional — they're there because the Los Angeles County Museum of Art has been building this program since the 1960s, and the stage means something. Jazz at LACMA draws players who tour internationally and fill the Wiltern for five hundred dollars a ticket. On Friday evenings, they're playing for whoever walked in off Wilshire Boulevard. The doors open at 5. Music starts at 6. The crowd fills in by 6:30. You can sit on the steps, walk the grounds, or stand near the back and let it happen to you. The galleries are open behind you. The Chris Burden urban light installation gives the whole plaza a particular quality at dusk that's hard to plan around but impossible to miss when it happens. 6067 Wilshire Blvd, Los Angeles, CA 90036. Free. No ticket, no reservation. The concert is outdoors — check weather and bring a layer for after dark. Fridays through October.

Anime Expo 2027 — Los Angeles Convention Center
Jul 1 – Jul 4, 2027 Los Angeles Convention Center, 120…

You will be tired in a way that feels earned. Four days, a hundred thousand people, and not one of them needs you to explain what you are talking about. The largest anime convention in North America takes the Los Angeles Convention Center over Fourth of July weekend and spills into the JW Marriott and the Ritz-Carlton beside it. Industry panels, screening rooms, autograph sessions with voice actors and composers, concerts that sell out weeks ahead. Studios from Japan use this as their main North American announcement stage — if a sequel or adaptation is being revealed, it often happens in a room you could be standing in. The exhibit hall carries imported merchandise and collaboration exclusives that surface nowhere else on the continent. Los Angeles Convention Center, 1201 S Figueroa St. Thursday through Sunday. Badges run from top-tier early-access down to single-day passes. Book the connected hotel corridor months out. Everyone who tells you that learned it the hard way.

Oceanside Sunset Market -- Summer 2026 Thursdays
Every Thursday · Next Oct 8 Free Coast Hwy & Pier View Way, Oceansi…

The Pacific is a block away. Every Thursday evening from 5 to 9 PM, the corner of Coast Highway and Pier View Way becomes the Oceanside Sunset Market — vendors, food, live music, and the light that only happens when you're that close to the water at that hour. The beach-town market that runs when the day is actually good. Local makers, artisans, food vendors, and the crowd that comes out because the evening earned it. The vendor mix is Oceanside-specific: local crafts, art, jewelry, produce, and the food vendors that the beach corridor supports. The live music stage runs throughout the evening. The Oceanside Pier is visible from the market — the setting does work the vendors don't have to. Free to attend. Parking available near the Pier. Every Thursday, May through September, 5-9 PM. Oceanside, California. The market runs through marine layer some evenings. The cooler Pacific air is part of the draw, not a reason to stay home.

Pacific Beach Night Market
Monthly · Next Nov 4 Free Bayard St and Garnet Ave, Pacific …

A hundred and fifty steps from the ocean, a corner of Pacific Beach turns into a block party that nobody had to organize you into. Fire pits going. Nine to twelve food vendors rotating week to week, so the thing you loved last time might be gone and the thing replacing it might be better. Live music that is genuinely local — acoustic sets, small bands, the occasional DJ. Games. A crowd of PB locals and students and people who simply wandered up from the beach still holding a towel. Past vendors have run birria tacos, banh mi, craft lemonade, Hawaiian shave ice, artisan pastries, small-batch hot sauces. A few craft sellers usually set up alongside. This is a neighborhood gathering, not a ticketed event. Free. No RSVP. You walk up. Bayard St and Garnet Ave, Pacific Beach. 5 to 9:30 PM. Bring a layer — it cools off fast after sunset, even in August.

Taste of Soul LA 2026
In 10 days · Oct 17 Free Crenshaw Blvd (Martin Luther King …

The smell reaches you before the stages do - barbecue and catfish and soul food covering a mile-plus of Crenshaw Boulevard, because every major Black-owned restaurant in South LA has a booth out here and the food is the center of the whole thing. For one Saturday in October, this stretch between Martin Luther King Jr. Boulevard and Leimert Park Village becomes one of the largest street festivals in Los Angeles. More than 300,000 people move through in a single day. The format is street vendors, restaurant booths, live music stages, a car show, health screenings, and community organization presence - but it is the food and the crowd that make it. Founded by the Los Angeles Sentinel, the oldest Black-owned newspaper in California, it has run for over two decades and stayed a genuine community institution: multigenerational, neighborhood-rooted, and enormous. This is Leimert Park and Crenshaw at their fullest. Free to attend. Crenshaw closes to traffic for the day. The Metro K Line stops at Leimert Park Village and is the easiest way in and out. Arrive early if you want to move - by noon the crowds are deep.
