Carole Lombard made exactly one horror film and almost nobody has seen it. In Supernatural she plays an heiress taken over by the spirit of an executed murderess, a 1933 Paramount picture that runs barely an hour, moves like a fever, and slipped so far out of circulation that for decades it travelled mostly as a rumour among people who collect this sort of thing. It is paired with Terror Aboard, another pre-Code Paramount rarity, in which a killer works his way through the passengers of a private yacht with a cheerfulness the Production Code would have struck out a year later. Neither turns up on a streaming menu. Both run on 35mm, which is most of the reason you can see them at all this year, and the reason the condition of the print becomes part of the evening. New Beverly Cinema, 7165 Beverly Blvd, on the fifteenth: first feature at 7:30, the second at 9:05.

The sets lean. Doorways narrow to points, windows are painted straight onto flats, shadows are brushed by hand onto the walls, and a hundred and six years on it still reads less like an old film than like somebody's actual nightmare, carefully transcribed. Conrad Veidt plays the somnambulist Cesare with a stillness that has been borrowed by every horror performance since, and the picture worked out most of what we now mean by a twist ending. The German crews who built those crooked walls were partly doing so because a collapsed postwar economy could not spare real timber or real light, which is how a budget shortfall hardened into the founding grammar of the genre. Watching it silent on a laptop is a wholly different act from sitting in a dark room while a musician plays to the picture in real time, choosing tempo against an audience they can hear breathing. Beverly Blvd, October 25, two in the afternoon.

Simeon ten Holt wrote a piece with no fixed length. The players decide in the room how many times to repeat each section and when to move on, so Canto Ostinato can run ninety minutes or five hours and no two performances share a shape, because the musicians are listening to the audience as closely as to each other. Four of them here, two pianos and two sets of mallets, inside a former Scottish Rite Masonic temple on Wilshire with Tacita Dean's FILM running through the space: a silent 35mm work made for a vertical screen, all grain and hand-worked frames, the opposite of a projection you can let slide past you. Repetition is the only thing either artist asks of you, and both of them mean it kindly. Tickets surface roughly a month ahead through the series and the museum. Marciano Art Foundation, 4357 Wilshire Blvd, on December 7 and again on the 14th.

Near the end of the movie, Sam stands on the observation deck of the Empire State Building and the camera holds on his face for three full seconds before Meg Ryan appears. In those three seconds, the orchestra carries everything the character cannot say. You've heard it through speakers a dozen times. You've never heard it performed by a live symphony while the film plays on a screen overlooking the San Diego bay.
The San Diego Symphony performs the complete score of Sleepless in Seattle at The Rady Shell at Jacobs Park — Marc Shaiman's arrangements, the Nat King Cole needle-drops, the Jimmy Durante moment that lands harder than it has any right to. The orchestra sits between you and the screen, and the score exists in the room as a physical thing, vibrating in the air, rather than a signal compressed into a speaker. Every romantic movie you've ever watched alone on a couch prepared you for exactly this feeling, and none of them prepared you for how different it is when you can see the violinist's face.
One performance only: Friday, December 11, 2026 at 7:30 PM. The Rady Shell at Jacobs Park, 1245 Seventh Ave, San Diego. Tickets via the San Diego Symphony box office.

Los Angeles Convention Center, 120…
You will be tired in a way that feels earned. Four days, a hundred thousand people, and not one of them needs you to explain what you are talking about.
The largest anime convention in North America takes the Los Angeles Convention Center over Fourth of July weekend and spills into the JW Marriott and the Ritz-Carlton beside it. Industry panels, screening rooms, autograph sessions with voice actors and composers, concerts that sell out weeks ahead. Studios from Japan use this as their main North American announcement stage — if a sequel or adaptation is being revealed, it often happens in a room you could be standing in.
The exhibit hall carries imported merchandise and collaboration exclusives that surface nowhere else on the continent.
Los Angeles Convention Center, 1201 S Figueroa St. Thursday through Sunday. Badges run from top-tier early-access down to single-day passes.
Book the connected hotel corridor months out. Everyone who tells you that learned it the hard way.

Coast Hwy & Pier View Way, Oceansi…
The Pacific is a block away.
Every Thursday evening from 5 to 9 PM, the corner of Coast Highway and Pier View Way becomes the Oceanside Sunset Market — vendors, food, live music, and the light that only happens when you're that close to the water at that hour.
The beach-town market that runs when the day is actually good. Local makers, artisans, food vendors, and the crowd that comes out because the evening earned it.
The vendor mix is Oceanside-specific: local crafts, art, jewelry, produce, and the food vendors that the beach corridor supports. The live music stage runs throughout the evening. The Oceanside Pier is visible from the market — the setting does work the vendors don't have to.
Free to attend. Parking available near the Pier. Every Thursday, May through September, 5-9 PM. Oceanside, California. The market runs through marine layer some evenings. The cooler Pacific air is part of the draw, not a reason to stay home.

Bayard St and Garnet Ave, Pacific …
A hundred and fifty steps from the ocean, a corner of Pacific Beach turns into a block party that nobody had to organize you into.
Fire pits going. Nine to twelve food vendors rotating week to week, so the thing you loved last time might be gone and the thing replacing it might be better. Live music that is genuinely local — acoustic sets, small bands, the occasional DJ. Games. A crowd of PB locals and students and people who simply wandered up from the beach still holding a towel.
Past vendors have run birria tacos, banh mi, craft lemonade, Hawaiian shave ice, artisan pastries, small-batch hot sauces. A few craft sellers usually set up alongside.
This is a neighborhood gathering, not a ticketed event. Free. No RSVP. You walk up.

Crenshaw Blvd (Martin Luther King …
The smell reaches you before the stages do - barbecue and catfish and soul food covering a mile-plus of Crenshaw Boulevard, because every major Black-owned restaurant in South LA has a booth out here and the food is the center of the whole thing. For one Saturday in October, this stretch between Martin Luther King Jr. Boulevard and Leimert Park Village becomes one of the largest street festivals in Los Angeles.
More than 300,000 people move through in a single day. The format is street vendors, restaurant booths, live music stages, a car show, health screenings, and community organization presence - but it is the food and the crowd that make it. Founded by the Los Angeles Sentinel, the oldest Black-owned newspaper in California, it has run for over two decades and stayed a genuine community institution: multigenerational, neighborhood-rooted, and enormous. This is Leimert Park and Crenshaw at their fullest.
Free to attend. Crenshaw closes to traffic for the day. The Metro K Line stops at Leimert Park Village and is the easiest way in and out. Arrive early if you want to move - by noon the crowds are deep.
