Diwali in the City — Los Angeles 2026
In 12 days · Oct 20 Grand Park, 200 N Grand Ave, Los A…

Then the lamps go, all at once, hundreds of them across a downtown plaza, and the crowd goes quiet for a second without anybody asking it to. Victory of light over darkness stops being a phrase you once read and becomes a thing happening in your hands. This is the center of the Festival of Lights for South Asian families across Southern California, and it has grown into a multi-stage evening: Bollywood numbers, classical Indian dance and music, a marketplace of South Asian goods and jewelry, crafts for the kids, and food from Indian, Pakistani, Nepali, and Sri Lankan kitchens that will ruin you for the version near your office. Fireworks follow the lighting at some venues. Downtown in October, all ages, free, with traditional dress welcome and everywhere. Take the friend who has only ever eaten this food out of a takeout container. Let them see where it comes from.

Anime Expo 2027 — Los Angeles Convention Center
Jul 1 – Jul 4, 2027 Los Angeles Convention Center, 120…

You will be tired in a way that feels earned. Four days, a hundred thousand people, and not one of them needs you to explain what you are talking about. The largest anime convention in North America takes the Los Angeles Convention Center over Fourth of July weekend and spills into the JW Marriott and the Ritz-Carlton beside it. Industry panels, screening rooms, autograph sessions with voice actors and composers, concerts that sell out weeks ahead. Studios from Japan use this as their main North American announcement stage — if a sequel or adaptation is being revealed, it often happens in a room you could be standing in. The exhibit hall carries imported merchandise and collaboration exclusives that surface nowhere else on the continent. Los Angeles Convention Center, 1201 S Figueroa St. Thursday through Sunday. Badges run from top-tier early-access down to single-day passes. Book the connected hotel corridor months out. Everyone who tells you that learned it the hard way.

Pacific Beach Night Market
Monthly · Next Nov 4 Free Bayard St and Garnet Ave, Pacific …

A hundred and fifty steps from the ocean, a corner of Pacific Beach turns into a block party that nobody had to organize you into. Fire pits going. Nine to twelve food vendors rotating week to week, so the thing you loved last time might be gone and the thing replacing it might be better. Live music that is genuinely local — acoustic sets, small bands, the occasional DJ. Games. A crowd of PB locals and students and people who simply wandered up from the beach still holding a towel. Past vendors have run birria tacos, banh mi, craft lemonade, Hawaiian shave ice, artisan pastries, small-batch hot sauces. A few craft sellers usually set up alongside. This is a neighborhood gathering, not a ticketed event. Free. No RSVP. You walk up. Bayard St and Garnet Ave, Pacific Beach. 5 to 9:30 PM. Bring a layer — it cools off fast after sunset, even in August.

Taste of Soul LA 2026
In 9 days · Oct 17 Free Crenshaw Blvd (Martin Luther King …

The smell reaches you before the stages do - barbecue and catfish and soul food covering a mile-plus of Crenshaw Boulevard, because every major Black-owned restaurant in South LA has a booth out here and the food is the center of the whole thing. For one Saturday in October, this stretch between Martin Luther King Jr. Boulevard and Leimert Park Village becomes one of the largest street festivals in Los Angeles. More than 300,000 people move through in a single day. The format is street vendors, restaurant booths, live music stages, a car show, health screenings, and community organization presence - but it is the food and the crowd that make it. Founded by the Los Angeles Sentinel, the oldest Black-owned newspaper in California, it has run for over two decades and stayed a genuine community institution: multigenerational, neighborhood-rooted, and enormous. This is Leimert Park and Crenshaw at their fullest. Free to attend. Crenshaw closes to traffic for the day. The Metro K Line stops at Leimert Park Village and is the easiest way in and out. Arrive early if you want to move - by noon the crowds are deep.

Gaslamp Artisan Market (GLAM)
Every 1st Saturday · Next Nov 7 Free 400-500 5th Ave, Gaslamp Quarter, …

Every Saturday and Sunday, the heart of San Diego historic Gaslamp Quarter transforms into an outdoor open-air artisan market. The Gaslamp Artisan Market -- known as GLAM -- runs the length of 5th Avenue between Market Street and J Street, with 70 local artisans showcasing handmade, one-of-a-kind goods. This is where San Diego independent makers set up shop: handcrafted jewelry, original paintings, ceramics, leather goods, woven textiles, hand-poured candles, botanical skincare, and prints from local artists who live and work in this city every day. The market hosts live music from local musicians throughout the day. GLAM is free to attend and open to all ages. Shaded seating is available. The market runs 10 AM to 4 PM. Getting there: Located in the Gaslamp Quarter, easily accessible by trolley (Gaslamp Quarter station on the Blue and Orange line). Street parking and paid lots available on nearby blocks. No ticket required. This recurring weekend market is one of San Diego most accessible community gathering points for makers and collectors alike.

Diwali Mela 2026 — Artesia Little India Street Festival
Nov 10, 2026 Pioneer Blvd (183rd to 188th St), …

Pioneer Boulevard shuts down, and for one day the biggest Little India in Southern California becomes the biggest Diwali party west of the Mississippi. The Artesia Diwali Mela takes over seven blocks of Pioneer Boulevard — from 183rd Street to 188th Street — with a main stage of Indian music and dance performances, dozens of food vendors serving everything from chaat to biryani to fresh jalebi, cultural booths, merchants with jewelry and textiles, and a street-level energy that makes Diwali feel like exactly what it is: the festival of lights brought to life in a California parking lane. Sunday, November 10, 2026, 11 AM to 10 PM. Pioneer Boulevard, Artesia, CA. Free admission. If you know someone who grew up celebrating Diwali and hasn't been to this yet, send them this. Fleet Week San Diego 2026
Nov 6 – Nov 9, 2026 Free admission Broadway Pier, 1000 North Harbor D…

Your chest hears them before your ears do. A sound comes in off the water, every conversation on the Embarcadero stops mid-sentence, and a few thousand heads tilt back at the same moment. This is the week the Blue Angels belong to San Diego Bay, flying low enough that the downtown skyline becomes their backdrop. What visitors miss is the quieter half. You can walk aboard Navy destroyers, submarines, and amphibious ships free of charge, up the gangway and into the passageways where somebody's kid stands on deployment. The Parade of Ships moves through the bay, the bands play, and the city says out loud that the Navy is its largest employer. This is not a show San Diego hosts. It is San Diego looking at itself. Free, family-friendly, on the Broadway Pier and Embarcadero in October, and the trolley beats parking on air show day. Bring the person who has never stood underneath one of those passes.

Little Italy Festa 2026 San Diego
In 9 days · Oct 17 – Oct 18 Free admission India Street & Fir Street, San Die…

Handmade pasta, cannoli, imported cheeses, and a chalk-art mural taking shape on the pavement under someone's knees - this is one weekend a year when India Street stops being a dining district and becomes a whole Italian-American neighborhood turned inside out. San Diego's largest annual street festival draws over 100,000 people across the weekend. The Little Italy Association organizes it, filling India Street and the surrounding blocks with cooking demonstrations, bocce ball tournaments, live Italian folk music, traditional dance, and an extraordinary spread of food. The Gesso Italiano brings local artists creating chalk-art murals on the streets; the cooking competition and wine garden are the peak-hour draws, and neighborhood restaurants run festival specials throughout. Little Italy is one of the city's most walkable districts - bounded by the waterfront, lined with bistros and gelato shops. Free to attend. Parking is limited - the Little Italy trolley stop on the Green Line is the easy way in. Mid-October along India Street and Fir Street, San Diego.

Tet in the OC — Vietnamese New Year Festival 2027
Jan 28 – Feb 1, 2027 Asian Garden Mall, 9200 Bolsa Ave,…

Flowers, in the days before the lunar new year, are not decoration — hoa Tet is the point, and watching an entire community buy them at once, in one sprawling market, is what stays with you long after the food is gone. This is the largest Vietnamese Lunar New Year celebration anywhere outside Vietnam, and it takes over the Asian Garden Mall and every lot around it in the middle of Little Saigon. Flower markets, carnival rides, banh chung and pho and banh mi and che, nightly stages running Vietnamese pop acts, traditional performers, and pageant rounds. Lion and dragon dancers move through the crowd. Firecrackers mark the turns of the night. The crowd is families three generations deep doing what they have always done, with the rest of Southern California welcome to come see it. Free to walk in, on Bolsa Ave in Westminster. The lots fill early, so take transit or rideshare. Go with someone whose family calendar does not start in January.

SD Kollective Night Market
Monthly · Next Nov 6 Free National City, San Diego, CA

The lawn chairs are the tell. Nobody hauls a folding chair to a shopping event. They bring one to a place they intend to stay a while, and that is what the south bay figured out about this one before anybody else did. A San Diego non-profit runs it on a stubborn premise: give small food businesses, independent artists, and community organizations a platform, and charge nobody at the door — not the vendors who could never afford a higher-barrier market, and not you. What comes out the other side reads less like a curated marketplace and more like a neighborhood that happened to bring dinner. Street food across a stack of cuisines, craft tables, community groups tabling, a DJ working the afternoon into the evening, kids underfoot the whole time. Free entry, all ages, National City, late afternoon into dusk. If you have been looking for the version of San Diego that feeds you before it asks who you are, this is it. Bring a chair.

Riverside Día de los Muertos Festival 2026
Nov 1, 2026 Downtown Riverside, Main St, River…

The marigold petals make a path. You follow it not because you're told to, but because you already know where it leads — back to someone who isn't here anymore, and forward into a room full of people who understand why remembering them matters this much. Riverside's Día de los Muertos Festival spans six to seven blocks of downtown on November 1–2, making it one of the largest Day of the Dead celebrations in the United States. Over 80 community-built altars line the streets, each one a love letter disguised as art. Two stages of live music keep the energy moving. Folklorico and Aztec dancers anchor the tradition. Lowrider displays that are art, not transportation. Face painting that turns you into the person your abuela would recognize instantly. This is not a themed event for an audience. This is a tradition that survived colonization, commercialization, and forgetting. The community builds it with their own hands every year because the dead deserve to be remembered beautifully. Riverside. November 1–2. Free admission. Bring flowers.

Pacific Beach Tuesday Farmers Market
Every Tuesday · Next Oct 13 Free 4500 Bayard St, San Diego, CA 92109

Salt still in your hair, no particular hurry, mid-afternoon — that is the window this market was built inside. Tuesdays are when the tourist traffic thins and the neighborhood quietly takes the day back for itself, and Bayard Street becomes the weekly anchor nobody bothers to advertise. The hours are the design: it opens as the day loosens rather than at dawn. Produce from inland farms, fresh fish, local honey, prepared food from people who cook a few blocks away, and the specialty things you stop buying at a grocery store once you have found a better source. What shows up shifts with the season, which is what keeps pulling you back. The real point was never any single vendor. It is the rhythm it puts in a week — the day you run into somebody from the neighborhood and stay far longer than you meant to. Bring the friend who keeps saying they should eat better.
