Lodge Room, 104 N Avenue 56, Los A…
Every autumn the light goes long and gold in the late afternoon and something in you starts looking for a wood to get lost in. Ten episodes aired in 2014. That was the whole thing. And somehow a generation now marks the turn of the season by rewatching them, in order, with the good candle lit. The band on this stage is the reason. They wrote the score — the frog songs, the tavern rounds, the glass-harmonica dread underneath the pretty parts — and they play it live with the same battered instrument cases and close harmony that made a children's cartoon feel like a folk record somebody found in an attic. Expect the room to sing back without being asked. Expect people in cloaks who did not coordinate and are delighted anyway. The crowd here skews people who found the show alone, at night, and assumed nobody else knew. They were wrong, and that discovery is most of the joy of the evening. Music at 8:00 PM at the Lodge Room in Highland Park. There is a second night after this one, and it sells out the same way.

The second night of a two-night run tends to be the looser one, and for a show built around a ten-episode cartoon that people watch every autumn like a liturgy, looser is an improvement. This is the band that actually wrote the score — the tavern songs, the frog numbers, the parts that made a children's program sound like a lost folk record. Playing it live, in costume, to a room that knows every word, produces something closer to a singalong than a concert. The people who come to the second night are frequently the ones who came to the first and could not leave it at that. Highland Park's old Masonic hall is upstairs, wood-floored, with a balcony. Music at 8:00 PM at 104 N Avenue 56, a Tuesday in October. Whether the leaves turn where you live or not, this is how a lot of people in this city mark the season now.

You can spend a decade with a singer's voice and never quite decide whether you like it, which is the strange contract this particular writer has with his audience — a warble that fights the melody, lyrics stacked with imagery that should collapse and somehow does not. Two bands' worth of people found him through the same 2005 record and then split off into camps depending on which project they followed after. Solo, stripped to piano, the writing has nowhere to hide and turns out to hold up completely; the songs everybody knows loud become something quieter and more upsetting. Highland Park's old Masonic hall upstairs is a wood-floored room with real reverb and no barrier, which is the correct setting for one person and an instrument. Music at 8:00 PM at 104 N Avenue 56, a Tuesday. He also plays a desert date on this run, and a number of people go to both.

You used to go to shows. Then you had a kid, and the math stopped working — the babysitter, the 9 PM doors, the guilt either way. That trade is the ache this fixes, and it fixes it by refusing the premise. A live band plays the songs at real volume through the real PA, and the floor stays empty of chairs on purpose so that the children can move however they want during it. Nobody shushes anybody. Parents end up dancing harder than the kids, which everyone pretends not to notice. The format has run for years in rooms like this one and the unwritten rule is that you arrive early enough to claim floor space near the stage, because the front two rows are where the four-year-olds organize themselves into something resembling a pit. The Highland Park hall has a balcony for anyone who needs to sit down and watch it happen. Music at 11:30 AM, all ages, upstairs at 104 N Avenue 56. It runs most months with a different songbook, so the families who come once tend to come back.

Grief written down carefully enough stops being self-indulgent and starts being useful to other people, which is the transaction at the center of this catalog. Rundle came up through Los Angeles heavy music, played in bands loud enough to damage hearing, and makes solo records that are quieter and considerably more frightening. The guitar playing is in open tunings that ring in ways standard tuning cannot, and live she performs largely in the dark. Rooms go completely silent. Her audience crosses metal, folk, and the general population of people having a hard year, which produces one of the more unusual crowd compositions in music. Highland Park's upstairs Masonic hall is the right scale and the right acoustics for it. Music at 8:00 PM at 104 N Avenue 56, the Saturday after Thanksgiving. Coming home to a room like this at the end of a holiday weekend is its own kind of correct.

Los Angeles Convention Center, 120…
You will be tired in a way that feels earned. Four days, a hundred thousand people, and not one of them needs you to explain what you are talking about.
The largest anime convention in North America takes the Los Angeles Convention Center over Fourth of July weekend and spills into the JW Marriott and the Ritz-Carlton beside it. Industry panels, screening rooms, autograph sessions with voice actors and composers, concerts that sell out weeks ahead. Studios from Japan use this as their main North American announcement stage — if a sequel or adaptation is being revealed, it often happens in a room you could be standing in.
The exhibit hall carries imported merchandise and collaboration exclusives that surface nowhere else on the continent.
Los Angeles Convention Center, 1201 S Figueroa St. Thursday through Sunday. Badges run from top-tier early-access down to single-day passes.
Book the connected hotel corridor months out. Everyone who tells you that learned it the hard way.

Bayard St and Garnet Ave, Pacific …
A hundred and fifty steps from the ocean, a corner of Pacific Beach turns into a block party that nobody had to organize you into.
Fire pits going. Nine to twelve food vendors rotating week to week, so the thing you loved last time might be gone and the thing replacing it might be better. Live music that is genuinely local — acoustic sets, small bands, the occasional DJ. Games. A crowd of PB locals and students and people who simply wandered up from the beach still holding a towel.
Past vendors have run birria tacos, banh mi, craft lemonade, Hawaiian shave ice, artisan pastries, small-batch hot sauces. A few craft sellers usually set up alongside.
This is a neighborhood gathering, not a ticketed event. Free. No RSVP. You walk up.

Crenshaw Blvd (Martin Luther King …
The smell reaches you before the stages do - barbecue and catfish and soul food covering a mile-plus of Crenshaw Boulevard, because every major Black-owned restaurant in South LA has a booth out here and the food is the center of the whole thing. For one Saturday in October, this stretch between Martin Luther King Jr. Boulevard and Leimert Park Village becomes one of the largest street festivals in Los Angeles.
More than 300,000 people move through in a single day. The format is street vendors, restaurant booths, live music stages, a car show, health screenings, and community organization presence - but it is the food and the crowd that make it. Founded by the Los Angeles Sentinel, the oldest Black-owned newspaper in California, it has run for over two decades and stayed a genuine community institution: multigenerational, neighborhood-rooted, and enormous. This is Leimert Park and Crenshaw at their fullest.
Free to attend. Crenshaw closes to traffic for the day. The Metro K Line stops at Leimert Park Village and is the easiest way in and out. Arrive early if you want to move - by noon the crowds are deep.

400-500 5th Ave, Gaslamp Quarter, …
Every Saturday and Sunday, the heart of San Diego historic Gaslamp Quarter transforms into an outdoor open-air artisan market. The Gaslamp Artisan Market -- known as GLAM -- runs the length of 5th Avenue between Market Street and J Street, with 70 local artisans showcasing handmade, one-of-a-kind goods. This is where San Diego independent makers set up shop: handcrafted jewelry, original paintings, ceramics, leather goods, woven textiles, hand-poured candles, botanical skincare, and prints from local artists who live and work in this city every day. The market hosts live music from local musicians throughout the day. GLAM is free to attend and open to all ages. Shaded seating is available. The market runs 10 AM to 4 PM. Getting there: Located in the Gaslamp Quarter, easily accessible by trolley (Gaslamp Quarter station on the Blue and Orange line). Street parking and paid lots available on nearby blocks. No ticket required. This recurring weekend market is one of San Diego most accessible community gathering points for makers and collectors alike.

Pioneer Boulevard shuts down, and for one day the biggest Little India in Southern California becomes the biggest Diwali party west of the Mississippi.
The Artesia Diwali Mela takes over seven blocks of Pioneer Boulevard — from 183rd Street to 188th Street — with a main stage of Indian music and dance performances, dozens of food vendors serving everything from chaat to biryani to fresh jalebi, cultural booths, merchants with jewelry and textiles, and a street-level energy that makes Diwali feel like exactly what it is: the festival of lights brought to life in a California parking lane.
Sunday, November 10, 2026, 11 AM to 10 PM. Pioneer Boulevard, Artesia, CA. Free admission.
If you know someone who grew up celebrating Diwali and hasn't been to this yet, send them this. If you didn't grow up celebrating Diwali and want to understand why a billion people do — come find out.

Broadway Pier, 1000 North Harbor D…
Your chest hears them before your ears do. A sound comes in off the water, every conversation on the Embarcadero stops mid-sentence, and a few thousand heads tilt back at the same moment. This is the week the Blue Angels belong to San Diego Bay, flying low enough that the downtown skyline becomes their backdrop.
What visitors miss is the quieter half. You can walk aboard Navy destroyers, submarines, and amphibious ships free of charge, up the gangway and into the passageways where somebody's kid stands on deployment. The Parade of Ships moves through the bay, the bands play, and the city says out loud that the Navy is its largest employer. This is not a show San Diego hosts. It is San Diego looking at itself.
Free, family-friendly, on the Broadway Pier and Embarcadero in October, and the trolley beats parking on air show day. Bring the person who has never stood underneath one of those passes.
