Washington takes itself extremely seriously fifty-one weekends a year, and once each spring several tens of thousands of people in costume take over its convention center and the effect is genuinely restorative. Awesome Con is the capital's pop culture convention, and its particular character comes from the city it happens in: there is a substantial science track built with the Smithsonian and NASA sitting directly alongside the comics and the film guests, and it does not feel bolted on.
What that produces is a convention where a nine-year-old can go from a panel by an actual planetary scientist to a line for a voice actor without leaving the building, and where the crowd is noticeably more family-heavy and more racially mixed than most large cons. The Walter E. Washington Convention Center is enormous and easy to move around, which matters more than people expect — there is room to sit, room to eat, room for kids to melt down and recover. Artist alley is strong. The cosplay is competitive without being cliquish. And because it is April in Washington, the city outside is at its best; a lot of attendees build a weekend around the museums, which are free.
Worth it? If you have children who are into any of this, it is one of the best large conventions in the country for that, and the science programming is a genuine differentiator rather than a marketing line. If you are a hardcore collector chasing exclusives, the bigger coastal shows have deeper inventory. Awesome Con is broad rather than deep, and that breadth is the point.
What to know before you go: the convention center sits on top of a Metro station, so do not drive — parking downtown is punitive and the trains run late. Badges are cheaper in advance and children's pricing is generous. Saturday is by far the busiest day; Friday and Sunday are calmer and better for actually talking to artists. Bring a bag for prints. And if you are traveling in, the museums a few blocks away mean the non-convention hours are unusually well spent.
It is on this list because a convention that treats curiosity and fandom as the same impulse is a rarer thing than it should be, and because a weekend where the most self-serious city in America lets go is worth knowing about. Awesome Con 2027 runs April 23–25, 2027 at the Walter E. Washington Convention Center.

You came for one author and you left carrying a reading list that will take you through winter. Nobody warned you about that — the way a book festival rearranges your plans for the next six months without asking.
The National Book Festival is the Library of Congress's annual gift to the country: a single day where the institution that holds 175 million items opens its arms and says, come talk to the people who write the things you cannot stop thinking about. The 26th edition takes over the Walter E. Washington Convention Center in DC on August 22, 2026 — free, all day, from 9am to 8pm.
The festival features conversations, readings, and signings across multiple stages organized by genre. Fiction, poetry, history, children's and young adult, graphic novels, science — every section runs simultaneously, which means you will spend the day making impossible choices between panels and loving every minute of it. This is the largest book festival in the United States, typically drawing more than 100,000 attendees to spend a full day surrounded by language.
What the regulars know: the signing lines form fast after each session ends. If there is an author you need to meet, position yourself near their stage exit fifteen minutes before the panel wraps. The children's section is not just for children — some of the best storytelling of the day happens there. And the Library of Congress pavilion is where you find the rare items from the collection that never make it online. The Poetry and Prose stage often has the shortest line and the most devastating readings.
The convention center layout rewards planning — download the map early and mark your must-sees, because the venue is large enough that moving between stages takes real time. Comfortable shoes are not optional.
Tickets are free but required — register early, they go. Livestreaming is available for those who cannot make the trip, but the real thing is in the room where someone reads the first paragraph of a book you did not know existed and you feel your posture change.
August 22, 2026. Walter E. Washington Convention Center, 801 Mt Vernon Pl NW, Washington, DC 20001. Doors at 8:30am.

Tidal Basin, 900 Ohio Dr SW, Washi…
For four to seven days you can never quite predict, a stretch of the National Mall becomes the most photographed place in America - and the bloom refuses to wait for anyone's schedule, which is exactly what makes it worth chasing. When the roughly 3,000 cherry trees Japan gave the United States in 1912 hit peak bloom over the Tidal Basin, the water disappears under a pink-and-white canopy, and walking the two-mile loop at dawn, before the crowds, is genuinely transcendent.
The festival organizes itself around the Tidal Basin, the man-made reservoir framed by the Jefferson Memorial to the south and the Martin Luther King Jr. Memorial to the northeast. Peak bloom typically arrives in the last week of March or first week of April, depending on the year's temperatures. The Kite Festival on the National Mall, the Lantern Lighting Ceremony in East Potomac Park, and the parade through downtown DC fill the surrounding weeks - but the trees themselves are the destination.
Here is the essential caveat: peak bloom is not on the calendar. The National Park Service issues rolling bloom forecasts starting in late winter, updated as temperatures develop, and peak lasts only four to seven days. Visitors who book around the festival dates without tracking the forecast frequently arrive early or late and miss it entirely. The safest strategy is to build flexibility across a 10-day window centered on the last week of March.
Crowds near the Tidal Basin during peak bloom are intense on weekends. Arrive before 7am on a weekday, or head to the Kenwood neighborhood in Bethesda, Maryland - a residential area with hundreds of cherry trees and a fraction of the Washington traffic. The National Arboretum in northeast DC is another low-crowd option with exceptional bloom density.
Japan's 1912 gift has become one of the most emotionally legible events in American culture - a reminder, on the same timetable every year, that beauty is worth planning around. The trees do not last. That is the point. The National Cherry Blossom Festival runs March 20 through April 11, 2027, in Washington, DC.
While you are lookingDifferent scene, same night out.

Olvera Street, 845 N Alameda St, L…
By January 6 everyone else has dragged the tree to the curb and gone back to pretending the year began without ceremony. Your grandmother would have told you the season was not over. Twelve days, she would say. The Kings are still walking.
On Olvera Street they never stopped counting. A procession winds down the oldest block in Los Angeles behind Ballet Coo, a folklorico company older than most of the people watching, and then the rosca comes out: the ring of sweet bread with a tiny plastic baby baked somewhere inside it. Cut carefully. Whoever finds one gets a gift from the Kings that same evening, handed over in front of everybody, which is either an honor or a sentence depending on how you feel about attention.
Nobody checks whether you grew up with this. The bread is free, and so is the standing around afterward.

Los Angeles Convention Center, 120…
You will be tired in a way that feels earned. Four days, a hundred thousand people, and not one of them needs you to explain what you are talking about.
The largest anime convention in North America takes the Los Angeles Convention Center over Fourth of July weekend and spills into the JW Marriott and the Ritz-Carlton beside it. Industry panels, screening rooms, autograph sessions with voice actors and composers, concerts that sell out weeks ahead. Studios from Japan use this as their main North American announcement stage — if a sequel or adaptation is being revealed, it often happens in a room you could be standing in.
The exhibit hall carries imported merchandise and collaboration exclusives that surface nowhere else on the continent.
Los Angeles Convention Center, 1201 S Figueroa St. Thursday through Sunday. Badges run from top-tier early-access down to single-day passes.
Book the connected hotel corridor months out. Everyone who tells you that learned it the hard way.

Bayard St and Garnet Ave, Pacific …
A hundred and fifty steps from the ocean, a corner of Pacific Beach turns into a block party that nobody had to organize you into.
Fire pits going. Nine to twelve food vendors rotating week to week, so the thing you loved last time might be gone and the thing replacing it might be better. Live music that is genuinely local — acoustic sets, small bands, the occasional DJ. Games. A crowd of PB locals and students and people who simply wandered up from the beach still holding a towel.
Past vendors have run birria tacos, banh mi, craft lemonade, Hawaiian shave ice, artisan pastries, small-batch hot sauces. A few craft sellers usually set up alongside.
This is a neighborhood gathering, not a ticketed event. Free. No RSVP. You walk up.
Bayard St and Garnet Ave, Pacific Beach. 5 to 9:30 PM.

Crenshaw Blvd (Martin Luther King …
The smell reaches you before the stages do - barbecue and catfish and soul food covering a mile-plus of Crenshaw Boulevard, because every major Black-owned restaurant in South LA has a booth out here and the food is the center of the whole thing. For one Saturday in October, this stretch between Martin Luther King Jr. Boulevard and Leimert Park Village becomes one of the largest street festivals in Los Angeles.
More than 300,000 people move through in a single day. The format is street vendors, restaurant booths, live music stages, a car show, health screenings, and community organization presence - but it is the food and the crowd that make it. Founded by the Los Angeles Sentinel, the oldest Black-owned newspaper in California, it has run for over two decades and stayed a genuine community institution: multigenerational, neighborhood-rooted, and enormous. This is Leimert Park and Crenshaw at their fullest.
Free to attend. Crenshaw closes to traffic for the day. The Metro K Line stops at Leimert Park Village and is the easiest way in and out. Arrive early if you want to move - by noon the crowds are deep.

Pioneer Boulevard shuts down, and for one day the biggest Little India in Southern California becomes the biggest Diwali party west of the Mississippi.
The Artesia Diwali Mela takes over seven blocks of Pioneer Boulevard — from 183rd Street to 188th Street — with a main stage of Indian music and dance performances, dozens of food vendors serving everything from chaat to biryani to fresh jalebi, cultural booths, merchants with jewelry and textiles, and a street-level energy that makes Diwali feel like exactly what it is: the festival of lights brought to life in a California parking lane.
Sunday, November 10, 2026, 11 AM to 10 PM. Pioneer Boulevard, Artesia, CA. Free admission.
If you know someone who grew up celebrating Diwali and hasn't been to this yet, send them this. If you didn't grow up celebrating Diwali and want to understand why a billion people do — come find out.
