MEGACON has grown into a four-day event at the Orange County Convention Center drawing well over a hundred thousand people. What it is, practically, is enormous and unusually broad. Comics, anime, gaming, horror, science fiction and a large celebrity guest roster all sit under one roof, and the show has leaned hard into fan-built spectacle: costume contests with real production value, a substantial number of large-scale prop and vehicle builds, and an artist alley that has become one of the bigger ones in the country. Because Florida draws attendees from across the Southeast and the Caribbean, the crowd composition is different from the coastal shows — younger on average, more family groups, and noticeably more first-timers, which gives the floor an enthusiasm that jaded convention veterans find slightly startling. Worth it? If you live anywhere in the Southeast, this is the show, and the guest list alone usually justifies it. If you are traveling from far away specifically for it, the honest answer is that the convention is excellent but the surrounding city will absorb your budget fast, so plan for that deliberately rather than accidentally. It is not the show for deep comics scholarship; it is the show for scale, spectacle and meeting people whose work you know from a screen. What to know: the Orange County Convention Center is vast and the two buildings are a real walk apart, so check your hall. Autograph and photo op tickets sell separately and the popular ones go early. Florida in May is hot and the walk from parking is unshaded. Bring water; there are refill stations. And the moment the result is official, a painter climbs the replica clubhouse cupola in the infield and repaints the horse-and-rider weathervane in the winning stable's silks, where it stays for exactly one year. The practice dates to 1909, after lightning took down the original arrow-shaped vane. Who it is for: anyone who would rather watch a sport in a building that has not been renovated into an experience. Be warned that 2027 catches Pimlico mid-surgery. A five-hundred-million-dollar rebuild is not scheduled to finish until ahead of the 2028 race, the grandstand will not be ready in May, and temporary seating and hospitality will stand in — which is also why the 2026 running happened at Laurel Park instead. MomoCon happens each Memorial Day weekend at the Georgia World Congress Center in downtown Atlanta, and it covers anime, gaming, animation and comics with an unusually strong emphasis on the industry side of animation. The distinguishing feature is the volume of actual working professionals — animators, voice actors, studio staff — doing panels that are about how the work gets made rather than about promoting a release. Atlanta has become a genuine production city, and the convention benefits from that proximity. Alongside it sits one of the larger convention gaming setups in the country: a tabletop hall, a big freeplay arcade and console area, and esports tournaments running the whole weekend. Cosplay is central and the crowd skews young, energetic and heavily costumed. Memorial Day weekend means an extra day, and the extra day changes the pace considerably — there is time to do things properly rather than sprinting. Worth it? If you are interested in animation as a craft and a career, this is one of the best conventions in the country for that specific reason, and the access to working professionals is unusually good. If you are primarily a collector, the dealer hall is solid but not a destination. It is a maker's and a player's convention more than a buyer's. What to know: downtown Atlanta hotels connected to or near the convention center fill first and the walk matters in May humidity. Memorial Day weekend has a fixed meaning for a particular group of people on the East Coast, and it has nothing to do with barbecues. It means the Hynes, and the Sheraton next door, and roughly twenty thousand people who have been coming to the same three days in Boston since they were teenagers and are now bringing their own teenagers. 2027 is the twenty-fifth, which changes the texture of it. A convention that has run a quarter of a century accumulates something a newer one cannot buy: people who met in a line here in 2006 and got married, artists who sold their first print in this Artist Alley and now have a studio, panels that are genuinely about the history of the medium rather than whatever is currently airing. The anniversary year is when all of that surfaces at once. What it actually feels like is a building that has been temporarily reassigned. The Hynes is a conventional glass-and-carpet convention centre for fifty-one weeks a year and then for three days it is full of people in enormous handmade costumes negotiating escalators with real care. The cosplay here skews toward craft rather than purchase - New England winters apparently produce people with time to sew - and the masquerade is treated as a serious competition. Is it worth travelling for? If you are in the Northeast, unambiguously, and the anniversary makes this the year. If you are coming from further away, understand what it is and is not: this is a fan convention, not an industry showcase. You are not here for studio announcements. You are here because twenty thousand people who like the same thing you like have agreed to occupy the same four blocks, and because the dealer's room and Artist Alley at a convention this old are deep in a way that newer shows are not. Things worth knowing before you go. Badges sell out and the price steps up as the date approaches, so early is cheaper. The Hynes connects indoors to the Prudential Center and the Sheraton, which matters enormously in unpredictable May weather and means you can spend three days without going outside. Boston in late May is pleasant and expensive; book the hotel block the day it opens or stay a Green Line ride away. Food inside the convention is convention food - Boylston Street is thirty seconds away and much better. The reason it belongs on a national list is simply durability. Plenty of conventions are bigger. Very few have been doing it continuously for twenty-five years with the same community still showing up, and that longevity is the product. The twenty-sixth edition runs June 3 to 12, 2027, across venues in Manhattan, with passes already on sale and submissions open. What it feels like, in practice, is New York in early June doing what it does best: too much happening at once, outdoors, in public. Tribeca long ago stopped being only a film festival. Since 2021 it has programmed television, podcasts, games, immersive work and live audio, and the result is that a single afternoon can take you from a documentary premiere to a podcast recorded live in front of six hundred people to an outdoor screening in a plaza where nobody paid anything. Screenings are routinely followed by conversations, live performance or a reunion of a cast, so a two-hour film becomes a three-hour evening. Red carpets happen on open streets rather than behind a mountain cordon, which is why Tribeca has a reputation for being the festival where ordinary ticket-buyers actually see people. Is it worth it? Yes - and specifically it is worth it for people who assume a major film festival is not for them. Sundance requires a mountain and a car; Cannes requires an industry badge. Tribeca requires a subway ride. If you are the sort of person who likes seeing something before the reviews exist and then arguing about it on the walk to the train, this is built for you. It is not the festival to attend if you want the year's awards contenders; those premiere in the autumn. Tribeca's strength is documentary, New York stories, and first features. What to know before you go: the rush line is real and it works. A screening showing as sold out online will almost always seat most of the rush queue at showtime, because advance sales close early and no-shows are common - locals buy single tickets at the door routinely. Three races, five weeks, and a question that is usually already dead by the time anybody arrives for the third one. That is the strange shape of American racing's spring: the whole country pays attention in early May, a smaller share pays attention two weeks after that, and then there is a long pause before the last and longest leg, which either completes a story or confirms there was never going to be one. Most years it is the latter. The race runs regardless, and the people in the stands are the ones who were always going to be there. The 159th running returns to Belmont Park on Long Island after three years away, having spent the rebuild up at Saratoga while the old grandstand came down and a new one went up in its place. That homecoming is the story of this particular edition. A mile and a half is the longest of the three classics and the reason the race carries the reputation it does - it is a distance most American thoroughbreds are never asked to run, which is why horses beaten at Churchill Downs sometimes win here, and why a front-runner who looked untouchable in Kentucky can get caught in the final furlong by something nobody was watching. They call it the Test of the Champion and they mean it literally. Whether it is worth the trip depends entirely on what you want from a day at a racetrack. If you are after the party, the Derby is the party: hats, juleps, infield chaos, and a two-minute race you may not actually see. This is the one for people who came for the race. The crowd knows more, the long backstretch produces a genuine hush before the turn for home, and because the distance makes the finish so unpredictable, the noise at the end is less a celebration than a release. Bring somebody who will sit and read a program with you. Practical things worth knowing this far out. Post time is not announced yet and gets set closer to the date, so do not build a day around a specific hour until it is published. The festival runs across several days in the first week of June with the stakes itself on the Saturday. Belmont Park sits in Elmont, which is Nassau County and not Manhattan, and there is a dedicated rail spur out to the track on race days that is considerably easier than driving. Dress for sun rather than for weather. The Triple Crown is one of the few sporting calendars that doubles as a cultural one, three dates that quietly organise a season for people who otherwise never think about horses at all. The two races that set this one up happen in Kentucky and Maryland in the weeks beforehand, and nearly everybody here will have watched both.

Most music festivals ask you to pick a tribe at the gate. This one assumes you already did, years ago, probably in a car, probably with somebody who is no longer in your life — and it has been waiting for you to admit it. Four days in June, downtown Nashville closed to traffic, and something like a hundred thousand people walking between stages in the kind of humidity that makes strangers talk to each other. CMA Fest 2027 runs June 10 through 13, and it is the first edition to culminate inside the new Nissan Stadium, with nightly shows beginning at 5:00 PM. The shape of the thing surprises people. The stadium headliners at night are what gets televised — the festival is filmed for an ABC and Hulu special that airs later in the summer — but the daytime is the actual festival, and it is free or nearly free across a dozen stages scattered through downtown and along the river. You can spend an entire afternoon three feet from an artist who will be playing arenas in two years, then walk four blocks and watch somebody who already does. Broadway is wall-to-wall. The honky-tonks run live music from eleven in the morning. Nobody is cool about any of it, which is the relief. Is it worth it? If you have ever defended country music at a dinner party, this is the four days you were defending. Go. If your interest is ironic, you will be miserable and conspicuous by Friday afternoon — this crowd is sincere to a degree that is genuinely disarming, and the sincerity is non-negotiable. It is also, for what it is worth, one of the most logistically humane large festivals in the country: it is in a real city with real hotels and real restaurants, not a field. What the regulars do: they treat the stadium pass as the frame and the free daytime stages as the meal. They bring a rain shell, because June in Tennessee does what it wants, and a water bottle, because the heat index is the actual opponent. They walk — parking downtown that weekend is a punishment. And they go to at least one thing they have never heard of, because the writer rounds and small stages are where the festival earns its reputation. It earns its place here because it is the rare festival that is also a hometown. The industry lives in that city. For four days in June it opens the front door, and anyone who shows up is treated like they were invited.

After the main stage ends, Nightgrass shows run in small rooms around town until the early hours, and those are where the genuinely strange collaborations happen, because everyone in the lineup is staying within four blocks of each other. It is not for someone who wants a spectacle, a light show, or an easy weekend. You are camping or paying alpine-town prices, the air is thin enough to matter, and the weather does what it likes. What to know: tickets go through a lottery and four-day passes have historically sold out long before any lineup is announced, which tells you what people are actually buying. Arrive a day early to adjust to the elevation and drink far more water than feels reasonable. Bring layers for a forty-degree temperature swing in a single day. Sam Bush has played essentially every year since the beginning; locals will tell you the festival is not real until he is on stage. It earns its place here because it is the clearest example of a festival that never scaled itself into something else. Fifty-four years, same canyon, same size, same rules. One of these times you are going to stop watching this on a screen. In June 2027 the Women's World Cup goes to Brazil, and it is the first time the tournament has ever been held anywhere in South America. Not Europe, not North America, not Australia and New Zealand — the country where the game is closer to a first language than a pastime. Thirty-two teams, sixty-four matches, eight cities: Rio de Janeiro, Sao Paulo, Belo Horizonte, Brasilia, Porto Alegre, Salvador, Recife and Fortaleza. It opens at the Maracana on 24 June and the final comes back to the same stadium on 25 July. What that stadium means is most of what makes this different. The Maracana opened in 1950 and has been the room where Brazilian football keeps its grief and its records — the 1950 final, the 2014 final, the opening and closing ceremonies of the 2016 Olympics. Roughly seventy-nine thousand seats. Brazil won the hosting rights in May 2024, and there is a detail in the schedule that regular tournament-watchers notice immediately: the opener and the final are in the same building. That is not standard. It means the month has a shape — it leaves from a place and returns to it — and if you are choosing one match to be at, the people who plan these trips will tell you the opener is the cheaper ticket into the more famous room. Who this is actually for: not the person who wants a holiday with football attached. Brazilian winter in the south means Porto Alegre can be genuinely cold in July while Fortaleza and Recife sit near the equator and do not — eight cities across a country larger than the continental United States is a travel problem, not a walkable itinerary. Pick a city and let the draw come to you rather than chasing a team across four time zones. But if you are the person who has spent three tournaments saying next time, this is the one worth breaking the pattern for, and not because the football will be better. Because a full house in Brazil does not sound like a full house anywhere else, and the women's game has never once been handed that particular room. Three weekends, a permanent lakefront grounds built for nothing else, a dozen stages running simultaneously, and a gate price that has historically cost less than a single arena seat anywhere else in the country. Summerfest has been recognised as the largest music festival in the world, and the genuinely strange thing about it is that it is not a destination festival in the Coachella sense at all. It is municipal. Milwaukee built Henry Maier Festival Park specifically to hold it, the grounds sit directly on Lake Michigan, and for most of the city this is simply what happens in summer. People go after work. They go on a Tuesday, alone, for two hours. There are families who have gone every year for three generations and hold firm opinions about which stage has the best sightlines, which they will share with you unprompted. The format is the whole appeal. Instead of one enormous headliner slot organising everything, the park runs a dozen stages at once, most included with gate admission, which means the correct way to attend is to walk until something stops you. You will catch a band you have never heard of in front of four hundred people and then walk ten minutes to a stadium show. The hierarchy that structures every other festival is deliberately flattened here, and regulars will tell you the unknown band is usually the better story. For 2027 the festival moves back a week from its usual slot, running across three weekends in late June and early July rather than the traditional dates. Controllers talk to pilots by the colour of their aircraft instead. Rock your wings if you copy. EAA AirVenture gets described as an airshow, which undersells it to the point of inaccuracy. It is closer to a temporary city of aviation people, roughly 600,000 of them, who fly in from everywhere and then camp underneath the wings of the aircraft they arrived in. Around ten thousand planes come. They park in rows on the grass sorted by type, so you walk past a field of homebuilts and then a field of warbirds and then a field of 1940s taildraggers whose owners are sitting in lawn chairs beside them, visibly waiting to be asked about it. That last part is what people miss. There is no velvet rope anywhere on the field. The man restoring a P-51 will talk to you for forty minutes if you ask one honest question, and the whole convention runs on exactly that transaction. Friendships and more than a few careers have started at a folding chair beside somebody's airplane.
