That gap is what the day is actually about, and it is why the celebrating carries an edge of defiance underneath it. Buena Park puts its version in a neighborhood park on a summer evening, the Blue Breeze Band running soul, R&B, and jazz across the grass while the kids do what kids do at the edges of a concert. The city pays for the whole thing, which means nothing costs anything, parking included, and it starts early enough that families with small children get all of it. Drum circles. Jazz and DJ sets. Spoken word. Wellness programming. A marketplace of Black-owned vendors selling food, art, clothing and handmade goods down the length of the village. The Freedom Ride arrives mid-morning on 9, 14 and 19-mile routes, which makes this one of the few festivals that moves through the streets it celebrates instead of only standing in them. Leimert Park has anchored Black creative life in Los Angeles since the 1940s. John Coltrane played here. Eso Won Books sold Black literature here since 1988.
