Eight rising Black artists on one stage, moving between jazz and soul and hip-hop and spoken word and gospel and the spaces between -- and a room built so they can show up for each other across every genre and every stage of a career. That's what the Leimert Park Music Series does, monthly, at The World Stage, the same room that anchors the Sunday jazz tradition. August 25 is the sixth showcase; the first five filled the room. Tickets stay intentionally cheap so the audience matches the artists -- the people who'd actually come if word reached them through the right group chat. Bring the friend who's always telling you about someone you haven't heard yet. Doors before the music; the room holds about a hundred and the history is on the walls. Leimert Park Village has been the cultural center of Black LA since the late twentieth century, and the Music Series exists because someone refused to let the centerpoint move.

A movie house from 1936 showing a picture from 1939, which means the room and the movie were built by the same decade, and Somewhere Over the Rainbow fills a space that already existed before it was written. The Chicago Air and Water Show does this every August along the lakeshore — free — and two million people show up to feel it. The show occupies the entire lakefront from roughly Fullerton Avenue to Oak Street Beach. The U.S. Navy Blue Angels typically headline, flying synchronized formations at over 700 miles per hour with wing separations measured in feet; the U.S. Army Golden Knights parachute team, the Air Force Thunderbirds, and civilian aerobatic performers fill out a program that runs from about 9am to 4pm on both Saturday and Sunday. The sound alone — a physical, chest-deep roar from aircraft passing at low altitude — is the part no video has ever managed to carry home. If you have never seen military precision aerobatics in person, this is the one to start with, and it costs nothing: no tickets, no registration, just show up to the lakefront. The crowds are enormous, especially on Sunday, but the lakefront is wide enough that even with two million people over the weekend you can find a workable vantage point.
