The Special Shape Rodeo, where unusual balloon designs launch together, is particularly good for children and for anyone who has ever found a hot air balloon shaped like a bee with a thousand others inexplicably delightful. Screaming while playing drums should not be physically possible, and one band made doing both at once their entire identity, and the singer doing both at once is the reason a certain kind of listener has followed them for over a decade. They came out of the Sacramento post-hardcore lineage rather than the SoCal one, all odd meters and clean-to-harsh turns that should sound academic and instead sound frantic. The audience knows every rhythmic trap and moves correctly through all of them, which is a strange and specific pleasure to witness. Monday is an unusual night for a show this heavy, and the crowd that turns out on one is entirely the committed end of the fanbase. Music at 7:00 PM in Ventura on East Thompson Boulevard. Post-hardcore has been quietly rebuilding a live circuit through rooms exactly this size, and this is what that looks like from the inside.

Half the fun is the arithmetic you run standing over a milk crate — is this a dealer who knows exactly what they have, or somebody clearing out a garage who has no idea. In a lot this size you get both, in the same aisle, on the same morning. Hundreds of vendors spread across the asphalt in the shadow of the stadium: vinyl, mid-century furniture, Levi's with the right stitching, sports memorabilia, film props, and objects that resist classification entirely. You can cover every row and still walk out certain you missed half of it. The early crowd is serious about this — the resellers and the collectors are through the gate before the rest of the city has finished its coffee. Monthly Saturdays in Lot A off Century Boulevard in Inglewood, small cash admission at the gate, and the K Line runs close enough to walk. Go early, and take the friend who cannot pass a record bin without stopping.
