SoCal Pinball League — Summer Series 2026
May 23 – Aug 29, 2026 Various venues, Los Angeles County…

The Southern California Pinball League runs competitive pinball tournaments throughout the summer at rotating venues across the Los Angeles and Orange County areas, offering IFPA-sanctioned competition that counts toward world ranking points and the SoCal circuit standings. The Summer Series format typically runs 6-8 events between May and August, with venues rotating through the established pinball locations of Southern California: Full Tilt in North Park, Pins and Needles in Los Feliz, Pacific Pinball Museum in Alameda (visiting events), 82 Bar in Hollywood, and hobbyist host locations where private collectors make their machines available for competition. Competitive pinball at the SoCal League level is matchplay format: players face a random opponent each round on a randomly selected machine, accumulating match wins across the tournament. The format rewards machine versatility — knowing current Stern productions, classic 1990s WMS games, and vintage electromechanical tables equally is an advantage that specialists in any single era don't possess. The league welcomes players at all skill levels. If you know what a multiball is and can drain intentionally, you have enough foundation to participate in a league event. The regulars are uniformly welcoming to newcomers and the post-event gatherings at the host venues extend the experience well beyond the competition itself. Check the IFPA Southern California player directory and the SoCal Pinball League social channels for the 2026 Summer Series schedule, venues, and registration requirements.

Griffith Park Disc Golf — Summer Series 2026
Jun 6 – Aug 29, 2026 Griffith Park, 4730 Crystal Spring…

The Griffith Park Disc Golf Summer Series runs informal and PDGA-sanctioned competitive rounds on the Griffith Park Disc Golf Course throughout the summer months, one of the most scenically situated disc golf venues in California. The course runs through the hills of Griffith Park with views toward downtown Los Angeles, the Hollywood Sign, and the surrounding Santa Monica Mountains. The Griffith Park disc golf course is a 9-hole layout on the Ranger Station side of the park with varying terrain, tree-lined fairways, and elevation changes that make it considerably more challenging than flat-ground courses. The summer series draws the consistent Griffith Park playing community — regulars who play the course multiple times per week throughout the season — alongside competitors from the broader LA disc golf circuit. The series format varies by event: some rounds are casual group play with scorecards, others are PDGA-sanctioned B or C-tier events with formal registration and rating implications. The series coordinator posts specific formats and dates through the Los Angeles Disc Golf Club social channels. Griffith Park's disc golf course is accessible from Griffith Park's east entrance on Riverside Drive. Parking in the surrounding Griffith Park lots. The course is free to play outside of tournament registration fees for sanctioned events. All skill levels welcome for casual rounds; competitive rounds have entry fees and division structures.

Jul 17 – Sep 7, 2026 Del Mar Thoroughbred Club, 2260 Ji…

The fog does not lift until the second race, which means the first one happens inside a cloud, and people who have been coming for years still stop talking when it does. Then it is summer. Hats on Opening Day, the infield lawn filling with people who brought a blanket and no plan, and the honest surprise of how loud a grandstand gets in the last furlong. Thirty-two days of thoroughbred racing an hour up the coast, building toward the Pacific Classic in late August, which pulls the best horses on the West Coast into a single afternoon. If you have never been, this is the season to fix that. The racing is the reason it exists, but the atmosphere is why people plan a summer around it, and there is more of it here than anywhere else in California racing. The season runs from July into Labor Day weekend, with dates and tickets at dmtc.com. Text this to the friend who keeps saying they want to try the track. Tell them to wear the hat.

Standing in line for a funnel cake at nine at night in August is not something anyone plans. It just happens, every year, to the same people who swore they were only stopping by. That is the fair: carnival rides, deep-fried everything, and the specific noise-and-neon overload that makes a summer feel like it actually happened. The food is the honest draw — turkey legs, bacon-wrapped corn, deep-fried Oreos, the choices that make a nutritionist wince and a county fair what it is. The Pacific Amphitheatre runs nightly inside the grounds, classic rock through Latin pop through country, bass competing with the Ferris wheel lights, and it is one of the better outdoor rooms in Southern California. Livestock barns, fine arts competitions and the Action Sports Arena fill the daylight hours. Bring the person you always end up at the fair with anyway.

Where the turf meets the surf sounds like a slogan until you are standing in the grandstand on a clear afternoon, watching the Pacific break behind the backstretch while the field comes around the turn. Bing Crosby helped start this back in the thirties, and the compressed summer meet has kept its own strange culture ever since. Serious handicappers doing math in the clubhouse. Families on picnic blankets out in the infield. The Friday crowd that came for the fashion and could not name a single horse. The Saturday concert crowd that arrives after the last race for a completely different evening on the same grounds. All of them on one property, mostly ignoring each other, all of them correct. General admission costs almost nothing, the Coaster stops next door, and the turf course is among the finest in the country. Take somebody who has never bet two dollars in their life. Watch them pick a horse by its name and then scream themselves hoarse.

Sturgis Motorcycle Rally 2026 — Sturgis, SD
Aug 7 – Aug 16, 2026 Main Street, Sturgis, SD 57785

Ten days in August, and the small town of Sturgis, South Dakota — population 7,000 — becomes a city of half a million. The Sturgis Motorcycle Rally has been doing this since 1938. Arrive in Sturgis on the first Friday of the rally and the sound alone tells you something is different. Main Street closes to cars and opens to motorcycles, and the flow of custom Harleys, touring bikes, and custom builds becomes a continuous parade. The surrounding Black Hills are the real draw for serious riders: Needles Highway is 14 miles of narrow tunnels and granite spire switchbacks that belong on every motorcyclist's bucket list. Iron Mountain Road corkscrews through South Dakota's most dramatic terrain. The rally itself spawns music stages, vendor villages, stunt shows, bike shows, and pop-up bars across a 50-mile radius — the Buffalo Chip alone hosts major touring acts nightly. The diversity of the crowd surprises first-timers: veterans and newcomers, engineers and mechanics, people who rode three states to get here and people who flew in and rented a bike. The common denominator is the machine. Sturgis is for anyone who rides or wants to understand what riding means to the people who live it. This is not for people looking for a sanitized festival experience with VIP sections and scheduled activities. It is for those who find meaning in the open road, want to ride some of the most dramatic terrain in the country, and are comfortable with ten days of organized chaos. If you are a motorcyclist who has never been, Sturgis before you die is not a cliche — it is a genuine recommendation. Book accommodations now. Not soon. Now. Hotels and campgrounds within 50 miles of Sturgis sell out months in advance, and the closer to Main Street, the earlier they go. The Buffalo Chip is the largest campground and hosts the best concerts — book a camping package directly with them. Bring rain gear: August in South Dakota includes afternoon thunderstorms that clear fast. Gas up before you reach Main Street — the lines at pumps on rally days are long. Parking on Main Street is motorcycle only, which means you park your bike among 50,000 others and walk the strip. That is the point. There is no corporate polish here, no influencer activations, no sponsored experiences. There is Needles Highway at sunrise, a custom build that took three years, and 450,000 people who made the same choice to show up. That kind of authenticity is increasingly rare. Sturgis 2026 runs August 7-16 in Sturgis, South Dakota. Event information at sturgis.com.

Martha's Vineyard African American Film Festival 2026 — Oak Bluffs, MA
Aug 7 – Aug 15, 2026 Oak Bluffs, MA 02557

The conversation happening outside the theater is as essential as the film inside it - filmmakers, producers, actors, cultural critics, and a deeply engaged audience share one island for nine days, and geography forces the kind of creative cross-pollination that does not happen anywhere else. For nine days every August, this festival screens work the mainstream circuit does not reach, with the Atlantic as the backdrop. The setting is not incidental. Martha's Vineyard has been a gathering place for Black families, artists, and intellectuals since the 19th century, and the communities of Oak Bluffs and Vineyard Haven carry that history into the festival. Films premiere here before wider release. Q and A sessions run long because the audience has real questions. This is for the film lover who stays through the credits, wants to know what the director was fighting for, and discovers something in August they will still be talking about in December. If you watch the Oscars wondering why certain stories are never in the conversation, this festival has been telling those stories for twenty-four years - not a place for passive consumption, but for people who care about film as a cultural force and want to see stories that do not get greenlit often enough, told by people who lived versions of them. A few logistics that matter. Ferries book up fast in August; island access is limited and peak-summer demand is real, so plan your ferry to and from the island early, ideally before you buy film tickets. Free parking is available at the PAC. The full itinerary releases in late June on the official website, and individual film and panel tickets go on sale in early summer. A day pass gets you into multiple screenings and is the most efficient way to take in the breadth of the programming. Build buffer time into your schedule - the island itself rewards wandering. The Black Sundance has never been a niche gathering; it is a cultural institution that happens to be held on an island. Twenty-four years of programming amount to an archive of Black American storytelling that belongs alongside any major film festival in the country, and some of the most important films of recent years passed through Oak Bluffs before they reached wider audiences. Tickets and schedule at mvaaff.com. Oak Bluffs, MA.

No board. No leash. No wetsuit required. Just a body, a wave, and the audacity to believe that is enough — which it was, for everyone who rode one before somebody thought to stand on something. Around four hundred bodysurfers come to the Oceanside Pier for this, from every age division and from around the world, and the judging tells you what the sport actually values: wave selection, the quality of the takeoff, style, and how long you can hold the thing. Prelims run all day Saturday. Sunday narrows to semifinals, finals, and the crowning of the grand champions by afternoon. Heats start before sunrise, which means the serious spectators are the ones on the sand with coffee and a blanket before the lifeguards have clocked in. Free to watch, both days, at the pier. Bring somebody who has never seen a person take a wave face-first at speed, and watch their expression change.

The good stuff is gone before noon and everyone who comes regularly knows it, which is why the early aisles are full of people moving with purpose and coffee. A stadium parking lot becomes something else entirely on the weekend. Rows of tables under pop-ups, a man who sells nothing but sockets, a woman running more houseplants than a nursery, crates of records that clearly came out of somebody's actual life, and a vintage rack a dealer drove down from Los Angeles to work. It has been running for over fifty years, long enough that regulars know which vendor is worth circling back to and which one always overprices the same lamp. Sports Arena Boulevard, Saturdays and Sundays, a few dollars at the gate. Go with the friend who insists they need nothing. Time how long it takes them to start negotiating.

You are not going to find it online. That is the entire reason people keep setting a Saturday alarm and walking a stretch of sidewalk they have already walked a hundred times. Fairfax is the street that defined California streetwear, and the market that sets up here on alternating Saturdays is dense in a way most vintage markets are not: deadstock, rare denim, band tees that were on somebody's body at the actual show, nineties sportswear, sneakers, accessories. What separates it is the sellers. These are people who know exactly what they have, which means the conversation is half the transaction, and the good pieces do not sit around waiting for you to think about it. Free to walk in, on Fairfax, with the active Saturday schedule posted online. If your style came from anywhere other than a mall, this is your Saturday. Bring the friend with the better eye and race them to the racks.

No racetrack in the country has air conditioning, which is why nearly every one of them is miserable in August and this one is not. The marine layer does the work here, and the ocean sits right there behind the upper grandstand. By the middle of the meet everything has settled. The horses know the surface, the crowd has thinned down to people who actually read the form, and the turf cards land between the Hirsch and the Pacific Classic, which is to say the racing is as good as this calendar gets without turning into a coronation. Buy a program. Take a seat in the lower grandstand. Let an afternoon move at the speed it wants to move at instead of the speed you brought with you. Jimmy Durante Boulevard in Del Mar, a Saturday card in the heart of the summer meet. Take the person who says horse racing is not for them and let them pick one by name.

Get there when the gates open, two hours early, before the seats fill. The park is nearly silent, batting practice is cracking off the bat and echoing around an empty bowl, and the light comes across the infield at an angle you will never see again once the crowd arrives. That hour is the best-kept thing in Los Angeles sports. The rest is what you came for: the mountains sitting behind the outfield, a stadium that has held this city's attention since the sixties, and a crowd that is Koreatown and East LA and the Valley and every transplant who never let go of another team but shows up here anyway. The third-base pavilion gets loud first. Dodger Dogs remain an argument nobody has ever settled. Chavez Ravine, and take the train from Union Station if you would rather skip the lot entirely. Go with someone who has never been. Watch their face when they come up the ramp and the field opens.

Canvas, sweat, and somebody's tamales drifting in from the parking lot — that is the first thing you notice. The second is that you are close enough to feel the ring move when a body lands on it. This is not WWE. It is the room before WWE — where the next generation learns to fly, in front of a crowd small enough that everybody in it will later claim they saw it first. FN WARRIORS is the August showcase, run by Hall of Famer Rikishi and Black Pearl, and it is indie wrestling at its most alive: no pyro, no production meeting, just athletes who love this art form performing for people who love it back. The matches are real. The storytelling is real. The kid in the front row who thinks he just watched the future is probably right. KnokX Pro on Saticoy Street in North Hollywood, doors at 7:00 PM. LAFC vs San Diego FC at BMO Stadium
Today · Aug 15 ✨ New BMO Stadium, 3939 S Figueroa St, L…

The drive up the 5 on a Saturday afternoon is its own small penance, and every San Diego supporter making it this weekend knows exactly what they are driving into: a stadium that will not be on their side, in a rivalry that did not exist three years ago and now feels like it always did. BMO Stadium is one of the loudest rooms in American soccer, built tight and steep so the noise has nowhere to go but down onto the pitch, and the north end does not sit down. What makes this particular Saturday worth the tank of gas is how quickly it got serious. San Diego FC entered the league in 2025 and, in a debut season that was supposed to be about learning how to lose gracefully, won the Western Conference and went to the conference finals instead. Expansion sides are supposed to need three years. Nobody told them. Now they come north to face an LAFC team that has spent a decade making this stadium a hard place to take points from, and the table between these two has been close enough all summer that neither set of supporters is treating it as a normal August fixture. Kickoff is 7:30 in the evening, which in mid-August means the heat finally breaks about twenty minutes in and the floodlights take over. If you have never done a SoCal derby in person, this is the one to start with: close enough to drive, hostile enough to feel like something, and early enough in the run-in that the result will still matter in October.
