Certain records are permanently welded to a specific year of your life, and there is nothing you can do about it. You hear four bars and you are back in a car with people you no longer speak to, and the feeling is not sadness exactly — closer to being visited.
Snakehips make that kind of record. The London duo spent the mid-2010s producing the slow, warm, slightly melancholy end of dance music — the songs that played at the point in the night when the party was thinning out and nobody wanted to say so. They kept working, which the internet occasionally forgets, and the DJ sets now run harder and funkier than the records that made them.
The Gaslamp room holds a few hundred, and a Friday there draws a crowd old enough to remember the first time around and young enough to still be out at two.
Ten at night to two on Friday the twenty-third, down on Sixth Avenue.

Nova SD, 454 6th Ave, San Diego, C…
They have been making the same joke for twenty-five years and it has never once stopped being funny, which is its own kind of achievement. A Jewish guy and an Arab guy from Montreal, self-described as the only successful Arab-Jewish partnership since the dawn of human culture, playing talkbox funk with total sincerity underneath the bit.
Dave 1 and P-Thugg built a career on electro-funk that could easily have been a costume and instead turned out to be a genuine command of the form — the basslines are real, the talkbox is played rather than programmed, and the songs hold up without the humor propping them up. The DJ set is looser than the live show and leans harder into the disco and boogie records underneath their whole sound.
Halloween eve in the Gaslamp, which means the room will be half in costume and entirely committed.
Halloween eve, doors at ten, and you should absolutely wear the costume.
While you are lookingDifferent scene, same night out.

The Onyx Room, 852 5th Ave, San Di…
The bass drops at nine and doesn’t stop until two in the morning. A live band sets the foundation while DJs layer in the grooves, and somewhere between the second drink and the third song you realize the whole room is moving and nobody choreographed this — it just happened because the music demanded it.
Neo Soul Tuesdays at The Onyx Room is the weekly gathering for San Diego’s soul, R&B, and funk community. The crowd is 21-and-up and dressed like they meant it. The format blends live instrumentation with DJ sets and open mic poetry, which sounds like it shouldn’t work but does because the Onyx Room is the kind of basement-vibe space where genres stop being separate things and start being moods.
If you have ever stood in a room where Erykah Badu was playing and felt like the whole city understood you, this is the closest you get to that feeling on a weeknight.
Every Tuesday, 9:00 PM – 2:00 AM. Twenty-one and up. The Onyx Room, 852 5th Ave in the Gaslamp.

Los Angeles Convention Center, 120…
You will be tired in a way that feels earned. Four days, a hundred thousand people, and not one of them needs you to explain what you are talking about.
The largest anime convention in North America takes the Los Angeles Convention Center over Fourth of July weekend and spills into the JW Marriott and the Ritz-Carlton beside it. Industry panels, screening rooms, autograph sessions with voice actors and composers, concerts that sell out weeks ahead. Studios from Japan use this as their main North American announcement stage — if a sequel or adaptation is being revealed, it often happens in a room you could be standing in.
The exhibit hall carries imported merchandise and collaboration exclusives that surface nowhere else on the continent.
Los Angeles Convention Center, 1201 S Figueroa St. Thursday through Sunday. Badges run from top-tier early-access down to single-day passes.
Book the connected hotel corridor months out. Everyone who tells you that learned it the hard way.

Coast Hwy & Pier View Way, Oceansi…
The Pacific is a block away.
Every Thursday evening from 5 to 9 PM, the corner of Coast Highway and Pier View Way becomes the Oceanside Sunset Market — vendors, food, live music, and the light that only happens when you're that close to the water at that hour.
The beach-town market that runs when the day is actually good. Local makers, artisans, food vendors, and the crowd that comes out because the evening earned it.
The vendor mix is Oceanside-specific: local crafts, art, jewelry, produce, and the food vendors that the beach corridor supports. The live music stage runs throughout the evening. The Oceanside Pier is visible from the market — the setting does work the vendors don't have to.
Free to attend. Parking available near the Pier. Every Thursday, May through September, 5-9 PM. Oceanside, California. The market runs through marine layer some evenings. The cooler Pacific air is part of the draw, not a reason to stay home.

Bayard St and Garnet Ave, Pacific …
A hundred and fifty steps from the ocean, a corner of Pacific Beach turns into a block party that nobody had to organize you into.
Fire pits going. Nine to twelve food vendors rotating week to week, so the thing you loved last time might be gone and the thing replacing it might be better. Live music that is genuinely local — acoustic sets, small bands, the occasional DJ. Games. A crowd of PB locals and students and people who simply wandered up from the beach still holding a towel.
Past vendors have run birria tacos, banh mi, craft lemonade, Hawaiian shave ice, artisan pastries, small-batch hot sauces. A few craft sellers usually set up alongside.
This is a neighborhood gathering, not a ticketed event. Free. No RSVP. You walk up.

Crenshaw Blvd (Martin Luther King …
The smell reaches you before the stages do - barbecue and catfish and soul food covering a mile-plus of Crenshaw Boulevard, because every major Black-owned restaurant in South LA has a booth out here and the food is the center of the whole thing. For one Saturday in October, this stretch between Martin Luther King Jr. Boulevard and Leimert Park Village becomes one of the largest street festivals in Los Angeles.
More than 300,000 people move through in a single day. The format is street vendors, restaurant booths, live music stages, a car show, health screenings, and community organization presence - but it is the food and the crowd that make it. Founded by the Los Angeles Sentinel, the oldest Black-owned newspaper in California, it has run for over two decades and stayed a genuine community institution: multigenerational, neighborhood-rooted, and enormous. This is Leimert Park and Crenshaw at their fullest.
Free to attend. Crenshaw closes to traffic for the day. The Metro K Line stops at Leimert Park Village and is the easiest way in and out. Arrive early if you want to move - by noon the crowds are deep.

400-500 5th Ave, Gaslamp Quarter, …
Every Saturday and Sunday, the heart of San Diego historic Gaslamp Quarter transforms into an outdoor open-air artisan market. The Gaslamp Artisan Market -- known as GLAM -- runs the length of 5th Avenue between Market Street and J Street, with 70 local artisans showcasing handmade, one-of-a-kind goods. This is where San Diego independent makers set up shop: handcrafted jewelry, original paintings, ceramics, leather goods, woven textiles, hand-poured candles, botanical skincare, and prints from local artists who live and work in this city every day. The market hosts live music from local musicians throughout the day. GLAM is free to attend and open to all ages. Shaded seating is available. The market runs 10 AM to 4 PM. Getting there: Located in the Gaslamp Quarter, easily accessible by trolley (Gaslamp Quarter station on the Blue and Orange line). Street parking and paid lots available on nearby blocks. No ticket required. This recurring weekend market is one of San Diego most accessible community gathering points for makers and collectors alike.
