Not every October night has to be about being frightened. Some people simply want to walk somewhere beautiful with the person they came with and feel the season without a chainsaw in it. More than five thousand pumpkins, every one of them carved by hand, lit from the inside and set along a walking path. Portraits, scenes, whole sculptures, an ambient soundtrack underneath and nothing waiting to jump out at you. It sits on a wide-open fairground under the fall sky rather than in a parking lot, and entry runs in timed intervals so it never turns into a shuffling crowd. It lands in the week before Halloween and it is gone in four nights. The Fairplex in Pomona, an evening in late October. A song you did not choose starts, the circle opens, and either your body remembers the choreography or it does not, in front of strangers, with no warning and nowhere to stand. People drive an hour for this. They drive an hour for it in costume. That is what is happening in a Pomona conference center in late October — two rounds of it, a best-dressed contest stacked on top, and along one wall the other half of the reason anyone came: the swap tables, where the card you have four of gets traded to the person who has been hunting it since spring and has the one you need. Nobody involved thinks this is a small thing. Free admission, first round at 12:30 and the second at 4, at the Sheraton Fairplex on West McKinley. Go with the friend who will get in the circle, or go with the one who will film you. You will want both, eventually.

You feel a Top Fuel car before you hear it — the air changes, your sternum moves, and you understand why people drive to Pomona in February just to stand near it. That first weekend of the drag season has run on this strip since 1961, which makes it the oldest race the sport still holds, and there's a particular charge to being there while the whole season is still undecided: brand-new cars, new sponsors down the flanks, teams finding out whether an entire winter of engine work actually did anything. The cool February air is a gift here — it lets the fastest machines in motorsport make pass after pass without cooking, so you get clean, quick runs from Top Fuel, Funny Car, Pro Stock, and Pro Stock Motorcycle all weekend. And the pit pass is the secret: for barely more than the price of walking in, you stand a few feet from crews tearing down and rebuilding nitro engines between rounds, which is a thing almost no other pro sport lets you do. Somewhere in Southern California right now there is a man who has been working on the same car for four years. Not restoring it. Building it, from the frame up, chasing a specific idea he has never fully described out loud to anyone. He has a February deadline he set himself, and he is behind on it, and he will make it, and he will not sleep the week before. That is what fills the halls at Fairplex. The America's Most Beautiful Roadster trophy is nine feet tall and looks faintly absurd until you understand that grown men reorganize years of their life around it, and that some of them enter and lose and come back and enter again. Walk the buildings and you can read the obsession directly off the metal: hand-formed panels, paint with depth you cannot photograph, undersides finished as carefully as the hoods because the judges will look. This is the longest-running indoor car show in the world, and it happens in Pomona in the dead of winter, when nothing else does. February 5 through 7, 2027, at Fairplex.

You learned early to keep the volume down about it. The show that rearranged you at fourteen, the character you still think about on bad days — you mention it at work in a careful voice, already braced for the blank look. Then you walk into a hall on the Pomona fairgrounds in January and the blank look never comes. Somebody clocks your jacket from thirty feet out. A stranger finishes a line you only started. What surprises first-timers is how much of the floor is working artists rather than merch tables. The alley is where the real conversations happen, and whoever sells you a print stayed up arguing about that same ending you did. It takes over the grounds that hold the county fair, so there is room to breathe between the cosplay and the cafe tables. Two days, doors at ten, halls loud until seven. Everyone here got in through a different door.

There's a specific joy in being one of two thousand people all raising a full stein at the same moment, and no home bar will ever reproduce it. That's the whole case for driving out to Pomona on an October Friday: the oom-pah band hits, someone three tables over starts the toast, and suddenly a fairground full of strangers is rowdy together in the way that only happens when everyone commits to the same ridiculous, wonderful bit. The Fairplex has room most Oktoberfests don't — this isn't a bar that hung some banners, it's the LA County Fair grounds turned into an actual open-air beer garden. German and craft on tap, pretzels and bratwurst and schnitzel doing exactly what they're supposed to, live polka carrying over all of it. It runs multiple weekends, and most people pick one Friday, make a night of it, and quietly start planning next year's before they've left the lot. 21+. Every Friday and Saturday evening in October, 6–11pm, at the Fairplex in Pomona — about 30 miles east of downtown on the 10, or the Metrolink San Bernardino Line to Pomona North. Designated-driver deals at the gate. Bring the friends who'll do the toast without being asked twice.

This is a marketplace, not a spectacle. Rows of dealers with comics running from the Golden Age to last month, loose and carded figures spanning three decades of childhood, model kits, vintage toys, prototype variants, and the deep-catalog items people chase for years without admitting it out loud. Artists and small publishers table alongside the dealers, so the commerce and the creator side sit in the same aisle. It fills the climate-controlled halls at the Fairplex, which are big enough that you will not cover it all in a day. Both days open to the public, cheap at the door. Open-body traditional hot rods in the style of the 1930s, 40s and 50s — the shape American car culture keeps returning to. Holding that line for six decades has produced something closer to a living museum than a show field: every car in visual conversation with every other car, no era drift, no exceptions made. The builds carry weight. Many of these have been in the same family for decades, or represent one person's entire lifetime of work on a single machine. The owners are standing right there, and they will tell you. The swap meet runs alongside, filling additional lots with parts, memorabilia, tools and vintage automotive goods for builders and collectors. Fairplex at Pomona. The Summer Snow Car Show and Lowrider Spectacular is the kind of show where the builders know each other by name and the spectators become builders by the time they leave. The Derby Room at Pomona Fairplex transforms into a daylong celebration of SoCal car culture — the real one, the one that started in East LA garages and spread across every neighborhood that cared more about how a car looked than how fast it went. Expect lowriders, custom cruisers, pedal cars, and bikes competing for trophies, with vendor rows of parts, art, and culture merch filling the gaps. The live music lineup brings freestyle legend Trinere performing her hits alongside Suga Free, Tapps, and Bad Vic — so the soundtrack matches the cars: classic, loud, and exactly right. Held in The Derby Room at the Pomona Fairplex - a venue that has hosted Pomona culture for decades - this show puts custom cars, trucks, motorcycles, and lowriders in a fully indoor, climate-controlled room with professional lighting designed for show vehicles. The intimate setting lets you get up close to the builds, talk to owners, and actually appreciate the custom interior work and engine-bay detail. The show draws builders from across the SoCal scene, so expect everything from fully traditional lowriders to slammed Euro-style customs to lifted trucks. Admission is free, making it one of the most accessible custom car events in the Inland Empire. You thought it was nostalgia. They kept it a sport. Once a month the league runs a real tournament: matchplay, a new opponent and a random machine every round, points stacking across the night. It is IFPA-sanctioned, but that is not why the regulars come. A good table is the most honest machine there is. It does not care who you are, only whether you can read the ball. Drop in on a Thursday evening, pick up a pregenerated character sheet, and join a table — mid-campaign or at the start of something fresh. Dungeon Masters are provided. Dice are provided. Rules questions are not tolerated so much as encouraged. Tables sort by Tier, so a first-time player rolling their first d20 sits with other new characters instead of getting lost behind a party three levels deep. If you already have a D&D Beyond character in Adventurers League legal format, bring it — after tonight it is recognized at any AL table anywhere in the world, which is the quietly remarkable part of organized play. The beach-town market that runs when the day is actually good. Local makers, artisans, food vendors, and the crowd that comes out because the evening earned it. The vendor mix is Oceanside-specific: local crafts, art, jewelry, produce, and the food vendors that the beach corridor supports. The live music stage runs throughout the evening. A hundred and fifty steps from the ocean, a corner of Pacific Beach turns into a block party that nobody had to organize you into. Fire pits going. Nine to twelve food vendors rotating week to week, so the thing you loved last time might be gone and the thing replacing it might be better. Live music that is genuinely local — acoustic sets, small bands, the occasional DJ. Games. A crowd of PB locals and students and people who simply wandered up from the beach still holding a towel. Past vendors have run birria tacos, banh mi, craft lemonade, Hawaiian shave ice, artisan pastries, small-batch hot sauces. A few craft sellers usually set up alongside. This is a neighborhood gathering, not a ticketed event. Free. No RSVP. You walk up. Bayard St and Garnet Ave, Pacific Beach. 5 to 9:30 PM.
