Los Angeles isn't one city — it's forty neighborhoods that happen to share a freeway. Nobody 'does LA.' You pick a corner of it and go deep: the taco truck that only makes sense at midnight, the canyon trail that empties the whole city out below you, the market downtown where you eat your way around the world in one lunch. It rewards the specific and punishes the checklist. Don't try to see it all. Find your neighborhood and let it be yours for the day.

A day in Los Angeles

Nobody does all of LA in a day — but you can do one good arc across it. Here's a local's route, morning to close, with the address for each.

Morning Start high and early, before the heat and the traffic wake up.
Runyon Canyon
Runyon Canyon

This is about Runyon. Early, right now, before the sun turns the trail to an oven, half of Hollywood is already up there sweating out the week — and ten minutes up the fire road the whole basin cracks open beneath them: the endless grid, the haze going gold, a city so big it stops being a place and turns into a feeling. That's the payoff, and it only exists in the first cool hour. Those are your people, the ones already climbing. Every one of them had a reason to stay in bed. They came anyway, and they're the ones at the top with the whole city at their feet. You don't need Runyon for exercise. You need it for the ten minutes where LA makes sense. The trail's identical next week — that's not the variable. The variable is whether you're on it, or still telling yourself you'll go some morning. Some morning is this morning. Get up. Beat the sun. Go.

What you're getting into
  • Hike the 2.6-mile loop to the Clouds Rest overlook
  • The big off-leash dog run
  • Fuller stairs past the old Errol Flynn estate ruins
  • Hollywood Blvd shops, five minutes downhill
  • Coffee along Hollywood and La Brea after
Hike to the Hollywood Sign
Hike to the Hollywood Sign

This is about the hike up to the Sign. You've looked at those nine white letters your whole life — on postcards, in the opening shot of a hundred movies, through a car window on the 101 — and never once stood underneath them. That's the strange little gap I want to close this morning. Go early, up Canyon Drive before the heat and the crowd: four miles of fire road switchbacking up the back of Griffith, and near the top the whole basin drops away behind you and the Sign stops being a logo and turns into a fifty-foot thing you could almost reach out and touch. Your people up there are the early ones — the few who wanted it without the mob, sweating out the climb instead of shooting it with a long lens from a parking lot. The cost is one early alarm and a bottle of water. By ten it's a slow parade of selfie sticks. Go stand under the most famous sign on earth before the city wakes up and remembers it's there. Go.

What you're getting into
  • Mt. Lee summit — the ridge directly behind the letters
  • Bronson Caves (the 'Batcave'), a short spur off the trail
  • Griffith Observatory & planetarium, a short drive
  • The LA Zoo and the Autry Museum, both in Griffith Park
  • Los Feliz Village after: the Vista Theatre, taco spots
The Getty Center
The Getty Center

This is about the Getty. You've decided art isn't your thing, so let me take the art off the table entirely. Go for the tram that lifts you up out of the traffic until the whole city drops away. Go for the pale travertine and the gardens that don't seem to belong to LA at all and the view of the entire basin from the top of the hill. Go because it's free — you only ever pay to park — and because you come back down every single time feeling like a slightly better-made version of yourself, and you didn't look at one painting to get there. Your people up there aren't art people; they wanted a few hours that felt bigger than their week and found the cheapest way in the city to buy it. The Getty is the rare place that works on the people who think it's not for them. Doors open, tram running, right now. Go feel like the better version for an afternoon. Go.

What you're getting into
  • Ride the free tram up the hillside
  • Robert Irwin's Central Garden maze
  • Van Gogh's 'Irises' in the galleries
  • Picnic the lawns over the 405
  • The Skirball Cultural Center, ten minutes away
Afternoon Come down the hill — eat, wander, and end up at the water.
Grand Central Market
Grand Central Market

This is about Grand Central Market. Right now, under one roof downtown, a hundred years of the city is eating lunch — neon buzzing, steam off a dozen counters, a line at the taco stall and the egg sandwich place and the one you've never heard of that's probably the best. All of LA pressed into one loud, glorious room. The thing you'll eat near home instead, you've already forgotten — that's the honest comparison. Not closer versus farther. Forgettable versus a meal you'll actually tell someone about. Your people there understood lunch can be an event if you drive twenty minutes for it, and they never skip the longest line, because the longest line is usually the point. It's been happening for a century and a parking garage is the whole cost of admission. Skip the sad desk lunch. Drive down and eat your way around the world. Go.

What you're getting into
  • Eggslut, Ramen Hood, and a century of food stalls
  • Ride the Angels Flight funicular across the street
  • The Bradbury Building's iron atrium next door
  • The Last Bookstore, two blocks south
  • Walt Disney Concert Hall, an 8-minute walk
Hollywood Walk of Fame
Hollywood Walk of Fame

This is about the Walk of Fame — and yeah, it's a trap. Grimy, tacky, wall-to-wall tourists, and you should still do it once, on purpose, eyes open. Stand on the boulevard fifteen minutes and feel it: every dreamer who ever stepped off a Greyhound onto that sidewalk, dead certain this was the street where it finally happens for them. The whole city runs on that particular delusion and you've never once stood in the middle of it. Your people here, weirdly, are everyone — the whole busload of believers. You go once so you've touched the myth, then get on with the real LA and never go back. It costs fifteen minutes and a little of your dignity. Skipping it forever isn't taste — it's avoidance dressed up as taste. Duck into the TCL courtyard for the handprints while you're there. Go get it out of your system, today, not someday. Go.

What you're getting into
  • Match the handprints in the TCL Chinese Theatre forecourt
  • Catch an IMAX premiere at TCL
  • The Dolby Theatre, home of the Oscars
  • Madame Tussauds wax figures next door
  • Shop and eat at the Ovation Hollywood complex
Santa Monica Pier
Santa Monica Pier

This is about the Pier. It's crowded, a little cheap, and you're already halfway to talking yourself out of it — which means you're about to be too cool for the exact thing you came to California for. Right now the Ferris wheel is turning against the Pacific and the whole coast is going amber, the end of Route 66 and the edge of the continent in the same gust of salt air. That's not beneath you. That is a day at the LA beach. Your people out there are the ones who let themselves have it — rode the cheesy wheel, ate the bad churro, stood at the rail as the light went. Ride it, then rent a bike and head south to Venice where the real day keeps going. You can spend the evening being above it all, or you can spend it in it — and only one of those has an ocean in it. The light's going right now. Go get on the wheel. Go.

What you're getting into
  • Ride the solar Pacific Wheel at Pacific Park
  • The official Route 66 'End of the Trail' sign
  • Midway games and the West Coaster
  • Rent bikes on the Marvin Braude beach path
  • Third Street Promenade shops, ten minutes up
Venice Beach Boardwalk
Venice Beach Boardwalk

This is about the Venice Boardwalk. You've heard it's dirty and weird and a little unhinged, and you're using all three as reasons to stay away — when they're the whole reason to go. Two miles of oceanfront concrete where nothing's curated and nobody's performing for a brand: a guy playing electric guitar on roller skates, bodybuilders grunting at the original Muscle Beach, kids dropping into the skate bowl, fortune tellers, murals painted over every week, incense and funnel cake and the Pacific throwing itself at the sand fifty feet away. It's the last stretch of Los Angeles nobody ever polished or sponsored or turned into content. Your people down there are the ones who came to watch the whole human parade and let it be strange around them, instead of deciding they were above it. It's free — it's always been free — and the only cost is parking and a little of your composure. Rent a beach cruiser and ride the entire two miles of glorious chaos. Go see the city with its makeup off. Go.

What you're getting into
  • The original Muscle Beach outdoor gym
  • Venice Skate Park, right on the sand
  • Abbot Kinney shops & restaurants, a few blocks inland
  • The Venice Canals, five minutes south
  • Bike north to the Santa Monica Pier or south to the Marina
Golden hour Get above the city as the light goes — the hour LA saves for its best trick.
Griffith Observatory at dusk
Griffith Observatory at dusk

This is about Griffith at dusk. The traffic up the hill is real, and I won't pretend it isn't — but every person standing on that lawn as the city switches on beneath them fought the exact same traffic, and not one is thinking about it anymore. Because right as the light fails, the whole basin lights up under you — ten thousand streets coming on at once, running gold to the horizon — and it costs nothing but the drive to be there for it. Those are your people: the ones who wanted the view more than they hated the parking crawl for one evening. The view outlasts the traffic by about a decade — a rough half hour in the car for a thing you'll still see with your eyes closed years from now. And it's a dusk thing: a twenty-minute window when it's perfect, then it's just night. Leave now and you catch it right as it turns. Leave now. Go.

What you're getting into
  • Look through the free public Zeiss telescope
  • A planetarium show under the Oschin dome
  • Hike the Mt. Hollywood trail for Sign views
  • A concert at the neighboring Greek Theatre
  • The LA Zoo and Autry Museum, a short drive

Dodger Stadium
Dodger Stadium

This is about Dodger Stadium. You're stuck on the ticket and the traffic, so: the upper deck is cheap, and the sunset over Chavez Ravine comes free with every seat in the building. Right now, if they're home, fifty thousand people are on their feet, palms cut black against a pink sky, the roar building in the dark, a Dodger dog in hand — the oldest ritual this city still shows up for. And here's the thing you're actually missing, and it isn't baseball: you don't have to know a single player to want to be inside a crowd that cares about anything that hard. That feeling — fifty thousand people leaning the same way at once — is what you're short on. Not sports. The ticket's on your phone in ninety seconds, the traffic's the tax, and the ravine at sunset is what it buys. A bargain. Go get in the car. Go.

What you're getting into
  • A Dodgers home game in season
  • The 90-minute tour: dugout, press box, trophies
  • The 'Take the Field' batting experience
  • Hike Elysian Park's Academy Road loop nearby
  • Olvera Street and Union Station, minutes away

After dark The city LA becomes when everywhere else has closed — and it's only getting started.
Koreatown after midnight
Koreatown after midnight

This is about Koreatown, right now, this late. You're telling yourself to be responsible and sleep. But sleep is the one thing available to you every single night for the rest of your life — you will never run out of it — so spending a Saturday on it is spending the cheapest thing you own. Meanwhile Ktown is only getting louder: grills hissing behind fogged-up windows, a karaoke room three floors up leaking somebody's whole heart into the street, soju turning a table of strangers into a table of friends, the one stretch of the city that flat refuses to call it a night. Those are your people — the ones who decided the night was worth more than the alarm. It never asks what time you got here. Responsible is just the polite word for the smaller, quieter version of your life. You can have that any night. You can have this for about two more hours. Go be up too late for once. Go.

What you're getting into
  • Prime Korean BBQ at Park's BBQ
  • 24-hour saunas at Wi Spa's jjimjilbang
  • Private-room karaoke at Pharaoh or Shrine
  • Cocktails at The Line Hotel's lobby bar
  • The Art Deco Wiltern on Wilshire
The Sunset Strip
The Sunset Strip

This is about the Sunset Strip. You're picturing clubbing at twenty-two and deciding you're too old — but that's not the ask. This is the one loud mile where every band you ever loved cut its teeth before anyone knew their name: the Whisky, the Roxy, the Rainbow, the Comedy Store, marquees still buzzing over the same sidewalk that's heard it all. Some nights the air itself feels amplified, like the street remembers every set that ever tore the roof off and is daring tonight to top it. Your people there aren't twenty-two — they're everyone who ever stood where it happened and felt it. Go for one drink and one set. You don't have to close the place down. You just have to be on the mile where it all went down, once, and stop pretending it stopped being yours the day you turned thirty. The marquees are lit right now. Go stand under them. Go.

What you're getting into
  • A rock show at the Whisky a Go Go
  • Stand-up at The Comedy Store
  • Rock memorabilia at the Rainbow Bar & Grill
  • Live bands at the Roxy Theatre
  • Boutiques and cafes at Sunset Plaza
Al pastor from a truck, after dark
Al pastor from a truck, after dark

This is about the truck. Somewhere out there right now, under a bare bulb, a trompo is turning and a line of locals is twenty deep at midnight — and that truck, no address, no sign, is serving the best food in this entire enormous city. Just tacos is what people say who've never stood at the right one. Your people are in that line, and the line is the review — twenty deep past midnight is a verdict nobody could fake, delivered by people who know. What's waiting at home isn't a shortcut; it's a consolation prize you're about to hand yourself. And here's the honest part: you have to hunt for it. The best thing in LA doesn't come to you, doesn't have a website, doesn't deliver. You find the trompo, you find the line, you get in it. It's out there right now, spinning. Go find it and understand why they're all standing there. Go.

What you're getting into
  • Al pastor off the trompo at Leo's Tacos
  • Blue-corn queso tacos at Villa's Tacos
  • Tacos árabes from the Villegas truck
  • Live mariachi at Mariachi Plaza
  • Weekend artisan stalls around the plaza

Some records sound like a memory you are certain you do not have. You have never been to that apartment, never known those people, and the thing still lands like something returning rather than arriving. That is the trick this particular Spaniard has been running on dancefloors for a decade, and nobody has worked out how he does it. The detail worth noticing is the clock. Ten to three is five hours, a full hour longer than this room's usual Friday, and that extra hour is not padding. It is where a set stops being a performance and turns into weather. Sets this long are also why people here talk about a night in terms of what time they left rather than who played. Around $79, doors at ten. The crowd that chases long-form house in this city is small enough that you will start recognising strangers by the third night, and they will be the ones who tell you where the after is.

Los Angeles Kings vs. Tampa Bay Lightning
Mar 3, 2027 Crypto.com Arena, 1111 S Figueroa …

Florida sends its teams out west about once a year, and this is the one worth catching. Tampa Bay has spent the last decade as one of the most watchable clubs in the sport - fast, disciplined, structurally beautiful if you like that sort of thing, and genuinely instructive to watch live because you can see the shape they hold when the puck is nowhere near them. That does not come across on television at all. A Wednesday in early March means the trade deadline has just passed, so both rosters will have somebody in them who was playing for another club a fortnight ago and is still learning where everybody skates. That awkwardness is part of the entertainment. Go, and spend one period watching only the players without the puck. It is the fastest way to understand what the sport actually is, and it costs you nothing but your attention for twenty minutes.

Los Angeles Kings vs. Dallas Stars
Mar 13, 2027 Crypto.com Arena, 1111 S Figueroa …

By the middle of March the standings have stopped being a table and turned into arithmetic. Everybody in the building is doing the same sums, three or four games ahead, and that changes the sound of a room completely - the groans arrive earlier, the cheers last longer, and a harmless icing call in the second period can draw real anger. Dallas is exactly the sort of opponent you do not want at this stage: heavy, organised, difficult to play through. A six o'clock Saturday start is the most civilised slot in the week, finished in time for dinner somewhere decent downtown rather than a hurried thing beforehand. Go in March rather than April if you want the atmosphere without the price. The tension has already arrived by now; the resale market usually takes another three weeks to notice. Come late in a season rather than early in one: the hockey is the same and the room is not remotely the same, and the room is most of what you are paying for.

Los Angeles Lakers vs. Atlanta Hawks
Mar 19, 2027 Crypto.com Arena, 1111 S Figueroa …

A Friday in the back half of March against an opponent with no local history is the most underrated ticket in the building. There is no occasion, no travelling army, no grudge anybody inherited - which means the room is almost entirely people from this city who wanted to watch basketball on a Friday, and that is a markedly better crowd than a famous fixture produces. Atlanta are young, fast and genuinely fun to watch, which is more than can be said for several better-known visitors. By this stage of the season every game has consequences attached whether anybody mentions them or not. Take the Friday that nobody is writing about, sit closer than you normally would with the money you saved, and find out how different the sport looks from twenty rows up instead of sixty. Keep an eye on the standings in the week beforehand, because a fixture that looks meaningless in February can acquire real consequences by the third week of March without anybody announcing it.

Apr 3, 2027 Crypto.com Arena, 1111 S Figueroa …

April hockey in this building is either everything or nothing, and you will know which inside four minutes of walking through the doors. If the season is alive the place has a tightness to it that no other month produces - people arrive early, stay in their seats between periods, and watch the out-of-town scoreboard more than the ice. If it is over, the mood flips entirely into something looser and oddly lovely: a crowd watching for the pleasure of it with nothing at stake at all. Both are worth a Saturday night in April. St. Louis are a physical, deeply unsentimental opponent who will not be doing anybody any favours either way. A half past seven start on a Saturday leaves the whole evening open afterwards, and downtown in April is finally warm enough to want to be outside in once you come out. One practical thing: if the race is still live, the out-of-town scoreboard in the corner becomes the second most-watched screen in the building, and following it is half of what the night is actually about.

The gym on Olympic has a Monday-night rhythm that has nothing to do with anybody's day job. Teams of adults who were decent in high school and have made their peace with it, playing seven, eight and nine o'clock games in a municipal building, with a scorekeeper and real referees and a forfeit bond that makes people turn up. It is the least glamorous basketball in the county and some of the most competitive. The fall season runs into January, which means by the time you read this the standings already mean something to about two hundred people you have never met. Go and stand at the side for an hour. There is something genuinely restorative about watching a sport played at a high level of effort and a modest level of talent by people who have work in the morning, and nobody will ask you why you are there.

Some teams you only get once. The way the league rotates its schedule, an Eastern Conference club turns up in this building about as often as a decent rainstorm, and Ottawa is the far end of that - a franchise most people here have formed no opinion about whatsoever, which is its own peculiar kind of appeal. You come to watch hockey rather than to re-litigate a grudge. The building does something quietly remarkable for these nights, too: the floor the basketball team played on has gone, and underneath it the whole time was a sheet of ice. Thursday is the cheapest night of the week to sit somewhere good. If you have been meaning to work out whether you actually like this sport, a no-stakes Thursday against a team you have never once thought about is a far better test than a rivalry night, because nothing in the room is shouting at you about what you are supposed to feel.

A one o'clock puck drop on Halloween is a gift to anybody with evening obligations. You are in the building by half past twelve, out by half past three, and the entire night - the party, the trick-or-treating, the thing you already said yes to months ago - is still ahead of you completely untouched. Afternoon hockey has a different texture anyway: daylight in the concourses, children everywhere, a crowd that has not had six hours to drink. Buffalo arrives with one of the most stubbornly loyal travelling supports in the league, people who have flown in from a city that has had a harder time of it than this one and are visibly delighted to be somewhere warm at the end of October. Wear the costume. You will not be the strangest-dressed person in your row, and every queue in the place is shorter at lunchtime than it will be anywhere you go tonight.

The day after Halloween is the most forgiving day in sport. Half the city is wrecked, nobody has plans that survived the weekend, and the clocks went back that same morning, so by the six o'clock tip it has already been dark for an hour and the whole evening has the strange borrowed feeling of a night that started early and owes you nothing. It is the correct game to bring the person who has been saying for two years that they would come to one sometime. Early start, no traffic in either direction, nothing riding on the result, and a Toronto side that travels with a quietly enormous expatriate following - the Canadian contingent in Los Angeles is larger and considerably better organised than anybody expects until they hear it during two anthems instead of one. Downtown on a Sunday evening in early November is about as pleasant as that neighbourhood gets all year, and you are home before nine with the night still technically intact. Come for the one that asks nothing of you.

Go home first and you are not coming back out. Everybody knows this about themselves and pretends otherwise, which is why a seven o'clock Monday downtown works best as a straight shot from the office - no detour, no sitting down, no changing out of what you already have on. Downtown absorbs the early arrivals well. The plaza starts filling about an hour ahead, the restaurants along Figueroa run a pre-tip rhythm they have had decades to perfect, and the building is close enough to full by the anthem that the first quarter actually sounds like something rather than like a warm-up. Miami is the opponent, and they bring a travelling support that is disproportionately loud for a team three time zones away, partly because so much of it already lives here and has been waiting since the schedule came out. Monday is the easiest night of the week to get a seat worth having. Go straight there from work and find out what a week feels like when it starts on your terms.

Two buildings, twelve miles apart, the same seven o'clock, and the city only lets you have one of them. That is the real decision on the table tonight, and it only exists in a place with two teams and no coordination whatsoever between their schedulers. Choosing Inglewood over downtown is a particular kind of statement, and the people who make it are most of why this arena sounds the way it does: a crowd that had to actively decide, rather than one that inherited its allegiance from a parent. The newer building rewards the choice with sightlines and legroom the older one cannot physically offer, and a concourse where you can still watch the floor while standing in a queue for food. It sits across from the football stadium in the same enormous development, so the walk in from parking is longer than you think and better than you expect. Toronto travels with a surprisingly organised following, so there will be audible pockets of red. Pick the side of town nobody expects you to pick.

California hockey is a joke right up until you sit in the building for one of these. The state has three teams and no obvious business having any of them, and the result is a rivalry outsiders cannot take seriously and locals absolutely do - the north against the south, fought between two sets of supporters who both spent decades being told their sport does not belong where they live. San Jose brings people down for it. You will hear them. A Wednesday in early November is not where a season gets decided, but it is where the teal-sweater count in your own section tells you precisely how seriously the other city still takes this. Midweek seats go cheaper, and the upper bowl is quietly the best value in the building for hockey: you see the whole sheet at once and the play develops in front of you like a diagram.

Wednesday is the night a season stops being an event and turns into a habit. The opening-week novelty has worn off, nobody is here because it is a thing to have been at, and what is left in the building is the actual constituency - the people who will be in these same seats in February when it is raining and the team has lost four in a row. That is a better room to sit in than a full one, honestly. You can pick out individual voices from the upper tier. You can hear the shoes on the floor, which is the detail people always mention after their first midweek game and never after a playoff one. Miami arrives carrying the sort of reputation that makes a Wednesday crowd in Inglewood get louder than the fixture strictly deserves, which is the entire appeal of a non-marquee night against a side everybody has an opinion about. Nothing is riding on it. Turn up anyway and find out whether this is going to be one of yours.

A battle of the bands is the most honest room in music because the audience is also the stake. Every act on the bill has spent two weeks telling everybody they know to turn up, so the crowd arrives in distinct clumps that cheer with embarrassing intensity for their friends and then stand with folded arms for everybody else. By the third band that tribalism starts dissolving, usually because somebody good turns up who nobody came for. That is the whole pleasure of it. You are watching a few hundred people reluctantly agree on something in real time, with real stakes, and the bands know exactly how much is riding on it. Nobody is coasting. The in-season competition is the league openly trying to make November matter, and the strange thing is that it has largely worked: group games carry consequences an ordinary early-season Friday simply does not, and the players visibly care rather more than they are willing to admit in interviews afterwards. The result is a building with more edge in it than the date deserves. Portland is the opponent, the oldest continuous argument on this coast and one almost nobody outside the two cities has ever noticed. Live vocals over house music is a high-risk arrangement because a weak singer is instantly obvious and a strong one makes the DJ redundant. This duo solved it by being related: one produces, one sings, and the gospel training in the voice gives the records a lift that a sampled vocal cannot fake. What that produces live is closer to a performance than a set, with actual dynamics and an actual ending. The room is small and the start is late, so the first hour is the warm-up nobody should skip. Worth it specifically if you have been listening to a lot of instrumental dance music lately and have started to miss a human being being audible in it. Sibling acts also carry something a hired vocalist never can, which is thirty years of knowing exactly when to get out of each other's way.

At some point the music you were mocked for liking becomes the music everybody admits they liked, and the turnaround is now fast enough to happen inside one adult lifetime. The specific era on offer here was loud, ridiculous, aggressively optimistic and universally sneered at by people who went home and played it anyway. A decade and a half on, the sneering has evaporated and what is left is a set of songs that function as a time stamp for anybody who was between sixteen and twenty-four when they came out. A night like this works because it is unembarrassed. There is no ironic framing to maintain and no critical position to defend, just four hundred people who all remember the same two summers. What you get is a curator with an enormous memory playing records in a room small enough to see the mixer. The sets lean historical without being a nostalgia exercise: things that mattered, in an order that explains why they mattered, played to people who mostly heard them through a radio first. The crowd skews older than the venue's usual and behaves considerably better. Worth it specifically if dance music arrived in your life through a broadcast rather than a club, which for a surprising number of people is exactly how it happened.

Sunday evening is the quietest this building ever gets, and quiet suits it. The arena was designed around noise - a bowl that funnels sound straight down onto the floor, a ring of screen overhead that nobody can ignore, an entire section built to intimidate - and on a half-full November Sunday all of that machinery is running for a few thousand people who simply wanted to watch basketball. The effect is oddly intimate. New Orleans are loose and watchable and have nothing at stake in November, which is the right kind of opponent for an evening like this. Inglewood on a Sunday also means the roads work and the lots empty in minutes. If your only experience of this place is a sold-out derby, come to the opposite of one and find out what the building is like when it is not performing. Parking is also at its least painful on a Sunday evening out here, which is a small thing until you have tried the same trip on a Friday and remembered it ever since.

Long Island vowels in the concourse are the first thing you notice. This opponent does not get sent west very often, and when it does the people who turn up are a specific and rather wonderful crowd: decades-old sweaters that have clearly travelled in hand luggage, and a quiet intensity about a franchise that has handed its supporters a great deal more grief than joy over the years. They are excellent company for an evening. The Kings are the opposite sort of story, a team that had to build its congregation from nothing at all in a city with no ice and no reason to care, and a Thursday meeting between those two histories is a considerably better evening than the standings will suggest to you. Get there for the warmups. It is the only part of the night when you can stand at the glass without anybody moving you along, and it is where you find out how fast this game actually is before television flattens it out.

Two names on a flyer in the same font usually means neither is big enough to headline alone, and in bass music that arrangement produces better nights than a single headliner does. Both sets are shorter, both artists are trying harder, and the back-to-back section at the end is where the interesting decisions happen. The sound is glitch-adjacent and rhythmically awkward on purpose, closer to sound design than to songwriting, which either grabs you in the first ten minutes or never will. A Thursday in a Hollywood basement, late start, crowd of a few hundred who follow this closely enough to know both names. Nothing about it is an occasion, and the people there would consider that a compliment. Rooms this size also mean the artists are standing at the bar before and after, which in this scene is normal and in most others would be a selling point.

Oklahoma City on a Friday is the easiest sell on the entire calendar. A team built almost entirely out of players other franchises did not want badly enough, playing at a speed that is genuinely difficult to track from the upper bowl, is the single most entertaining ticket in the league right now and everybody in the building knows it. The half past seven tip gives you time to get down the 405 without hating the experience. What makes watching them here rather than on television worthwhile is the spacing: their whole method is about where people are standing when the ball is somewhere else, and a broadcast camera shows you roughly a third of the floor. Sit high rather than low for this one. It is the rare game where the cheap seats are the better view. Buy ahead rather than on the day for this one. It is one of the few November fixtures where the resale market firms up in the final week instead of drifting down.

Everybody has danced to at least one record by this man without having the faintest idea who made it, which is the standard fate of house producers and a slightly unjust one. The catalogue goes considerably deeper than the single that ended up in every advert, and a set lets him demonstrate that for two hours to a room that mostly came for one song and stays for the rest. There is a generosity to the way long-serving producers play when they are not trying to prove anything: lots of other people's records, no interest in being the cleverest person present, and an unembarrassed willingness to drop the obvious thing at the obvious moment. The floor in that room is small enough that the whole crowd moves as one object. Go expecting the hit, and be quietly annoyed that the tracks either side of it were better.

Dance music in daylight is a completely different proposition and most people only discover this by accident. Without the dark doing the work, the music has to actually be good, the crowd cannot hide, and everybody ends up considerably friendlier than they would be at two in the morning. Add a hillside in Malibu and rows of vines and you have an event that bears almost no relation to a club night despite the same records being played. It starts at midday and ends while it is still light, which sounds modest and is in fact the luxury: you get the whole thing and still have an evening. Expect sunburn, expect to talk to strangers, and expect at least one person to say they had forgotten this was allowed. Take somebody who insists they have aged out of this kind of thing.
