Los Angeles isn't one city — it's forty neighborhoods that happen to share a freeway. Nobody 'does LA.' You pick a corner of it and go deep: the taco truck that only makes sense at midnight, the canyon trail that empties the whole city out below you, the market downtown where you eat your way around the world in one lunch. It rewards the specific and punishes the checklist. Don't try to see it all. Find your neighborhood and let it be yours for the day.

A day in Los Angeles

Nobody does all of LA in a day — but you can do one good arc across it. Here's a local's route, morning to close, with the address for each.

Morning Start high and early, before the heat and the traffic wake up.
Runyon Canyon
Runyon Canyon

This is about Runyon. Early, right now, before the sun turns the trail to an oven, half of Hollywood is already up there sweating out the week — and ten minutes up the fire road the whole basin cracks open beneath them: the endless grid, the haze going gold, a city so big it stops being a place and turns into a feeling. That's the payoff, and it only exists in the first cool hour. Those are your people, the ones already climbing. Every one of them had a reason to stay in bed. They came anyway, and they're the ones at the top with the whole city at their feet. You don't need Runyon for exercise. You need it for the ten minutes where LA makes sense. The trail's identical next week — that's not the variable. The variable is whether you're on it, or still telling yourself you'll go some morning. Some morning is this morning. Get up. Beat the sun. Go.

What you're getting into
  • Hike the 2.6-mile loop to the Clouds Rest overlook
  • The big off-leash dog run
  • Fuller stairs past the old Errol Flynn estate ruins
  • Hollywood Blvd shops, five minutes downhill
  • Coffee along Hollywood and La Brea after
Hike to the Hollywood Sign
Hike to the Hollywood Sign

This is about the hike up to the Sign. You've looked at those nine white letters your whole life — on postcards, in the opening shot of a hundred movies, through a car window on the 101 — and never once stood underneath them. That's the strange little gap I want to close this morning. Go early, up Canyon Drive before the heat and the crowd: four miles of fire road switchbacking up the back of Griffith, and near the top the whole basin drops away behind you and the Sign stops being a logo and turns into a fifty-foot thing you could almost reach out and touch. Your people up there are the early ones — the few who wanted it without the mob, sweating out the climb instead of shooting it with a long lens from a parking lot. The cost is one early alarm and a bottle of water. By ten it's a slow parade of selfie sticks. Go stand under the most famous sign on earth before the city wakes up and remembers it's there. Go.

What you're getting into
  • Mt. Lee summit — the ridge directly behind the letters
  • Bronson Caves (the 'Batcave'), a short spur off the trail
  • Griffith Observatory & planetarium, a short drive
  • The LA Zoo and the Autry Museum, both in Griffith Park
  • Los Feliz Village after: the Vista Theatre, taco spots
The Getty Center
The Getty Center

This is about the Getty. You've decided art isn't your thing, so let me take the art off the table entirely. Go for the tram that lifts you up out of the traffic until the whole city drops away. Go for the pale travertine and the gardens that don't seem to belong to LA at all and the view of the entire basin from the top of the hill. Go because it's free — you only ever pay to park — and because you come back down every single time feeling like a slightly better-made version of yourself, and you didn't look at one painting to get there. Your people up there aren't art people; they wanted a few hours that felt bigger than their week and found the cheapest way in the city to buy it. The Getty is the rare place that works on the people who think it's not for them. Doors open, tram running, right now. Go feel like the better version for an afternoon. Go.

What you're getting into
  • Ride the free tram up the hillside
  • Robert Irwin's Central Garden maze
  • Van Gogh's 'Irises' in the galleries
  • Picnic the lawns over the 405
  • The Skirball Cultural Center, ten minutes away
Afternoon Come down the hill — eat, wander, and end up at the water.
Grand Central Market
Grand Central Market

This is about Grand Central Market. Right now, under one roof downtown, a hundred years of the city is eating lunch — neon buzzing, steam off a dozen counters, a line at the taco stall and the egg sandwich place and the one you've never heard of that's probably the best. All of LA pressed into one loud, glorious room. The thing you'll eat near home instead, you've already forgotten — that's the honest comparison. Not closer versus farther. Forgettable versus a meal you'll actually tell someone about. Your people there understood lunch can be an event if you drive twenty minutes for it, and they never skip the longest line, because the longest line is usually the point. It's been happening for a century and a parking garage is the whole cost of admission. Skip the sad desk lunch. Drive down and eat your way around the world. Go.

What you're getting into
  • Eggslut, Ramen Hood, and a century of food stalls
  • Ride the Angels Flight funicular across the street
  • The Bradbury Building's iron atrium next door
  • The Last Bookstore, two blocks south
  • Walt Disney Concert Hall, an 8-minute walk
Hollywood Walk of Fame
Hollywood Walk of Fame

This is about the Walk of Fame — and yeah, it's a trap. Grimy, tacky, wall-to-wall tourists, and you should still do it once, on purpose, eyes open. Stand on the boulevard fifteen minutes and feel it: every dreamer who ever stepped off a Greyhound onto that sidewalk, dead certain this was the street where it finally happens for them. The whole city runs on that particular delusion and you've never once stood in the middle of it. Your people here, weirdly, are everyone — the whole busload of believers. You go once so you've touched the myth, then get on with the real LA and never go back. It costs fifteen minutes and a little of your dignity. Skipping it forever isn't taste — it's avoidance dressed up as taste. Duck into the TCL courtyard for the handprints while you're there. Go get it out of your system, today, not someday. Go.

What you're getting into
  • Match the handprints in the TCL Chinese Theatre forecourt
  • Catch an IMAX premiere at TCL
  • The Dolby Theatre, home of the Oscars
  • Madame Tussauds wax figures next door
  • Shop and eat at the Ovation Hollywood complex
Santa Monica Pier
Santa Monica Pier

This is about the Pier. It's crowded, a little cheap, and you're already halfway to talking yourself out of it — which means you're about to be too cool for the exact thing you came to California for. Right now the Ferris wheel is turning against the Pacific and the whole coast is going amber, the end of Route 66 and the edge of the continent in the same gust of salt air. That's not beneath you. That is a day at the LA beach. Your people out there are the ones who let themselves have it — rode the cheesy wheel, ate the bad churro, stood at the rail as the light went. Ride it, then rent a bike and head south to Venice where the real day keeps going. You can spend the evening being above it all, or you can spend it in it — and only one of those has an ocean in it. The light's going right now. Go get on the wheel. Go.

What you're getting into
  • Ride the solar Pacific Wheel at Pacific Park
  • The official Route 66 'End of the Trail' sign
  • Midway games and the West Coaster
  • Rent bikes on the Marvin Braude beach path
  • Third Street Promenade shops, ten minutes up
Venice Beach Boardwalk
Venice Beach Boardwalk

This is about the Venice Boardwalk. You've heard it's dirty and weird and a little unhinged, and you're using all three as reasons to stay away — when they're the whole reason to go. Two miles of oceanfront concrete where nothing's curated and nobody's performing for a brand: a guy playing electric guitar on roller skates, bodybuilders grunting at the original Muscle Beach, kids dropping into the skate bowl, fortune tellers, murals painted over every week, incense and funnel cake and the Pacific throwing itself at the sand fifty feet away. It's the last stretch of Los Angeles nobody ever polished or sponsored or turned into content. Your people down there are the ones who came to watch the whole human parade and let it be strange around them, instead of deciding they were above it. It's free — it's always been free — and the only cost is parking and a little of your composure. Rent a beach cruiser and ride the entire two miles of glorious chaos. Go see the city with its makeup off. Go.

What you're getting into
  • The original Muscle Beach outdoor gym
  • Venice Skate Park, right on the sand
  • Abbot Kinney shops & restaurants, a few blocks inland
  • The Venice Canals, five minutes south
  • Bike north to the Santa Monica Pier or south to the Marina
Golden hour Get above the city as the light goes — the hour LA saves for its best trick.
Griffith Observatory at dusk
Griffith Observatory at dusk

This is about Griffith at dusk. The traffic up the hill is real, and I won't pretend it isn't — but every person standing on that lawn as the city switches on beneath them fought the exact same traffic, and not one is thinking about it anymore. Because right as the light fails, the whole basin lights up under you — ten thousand streets coming on at once, running gold to the horizon — and it costs nothing but the drive to be there for it. Those are your people: the ones who wanted the view more than they hated the parking crawl for one evening. The view outlasts the traffic by about a decade — a rough half hour in the car for a thing you'll still see with your eyes closed years from now. And it's a dusk thing: a twenty-minute window when it's perfect, then it's just night. Leave now and you catch it right as it turns. Leave now. Go.

What you're getting into
  • Look through the free public Zeiss telescope
  • A planetarium show under the Oschin dome
  • Hike the Mt. Hollywood trail for Sign views
  • A concert at the neighboring Greek Theatre
  • The LA Zoo and Autry Museum, a short drive

Dodger Stadium
Dodger Stadium

This is about Dodger Stadium. You're stuck on the ticket and the traffic, so: the upper deck is cheap, and the sunset over Chavez Ravine comes free with every seat in the building. Right now, if they're home, fifty thousand people are on their feet, palms cut black against a pink sky, the roar building in the dark, a Dodger dog in hand — the oldest ritual this city still shows up for. And here's the thing you're actually missing, and it isn't baseball: you don't have to know a single player to want to be inside a crowd that cares about anything that hard. That feeling — fifty thousand people leaning the same way at once — is what you're short on. Not sports. The ticket's on your phone in ninety seconds, the traffic's the tax, and the ravine at sunset is what it buys. A bargain. Go get in the car. Go.

What you're getting into
  • A Dodgers home game in season
  • The 90-minute tour: dugout, press box, trophies
  • The 'Take the Field' batting experience
  • Hike Elysian Park's Academy Road loop nearby
  • Olvera Street and Union Station, minutes away

After dark The city LA becomes when everywhere else has closed — and it's only getting started.
Koreatown after midnight
Koreatown after midnight

This is about Koreatown, right now, this late. You're telling yourself to be responsible and sleep. But sleep is the one thing available to you every single night for the rest of your life — you will never run out of it — so spending a Saturday on it is spending the cheapest thing you own. Meanwhile Ktown is only getting louder: grills hissing behind fogged-up windows, a karaoke room three floors up leaking somebody's whole heart into the street, soju turning a table of strangers into a table of friends, the one stretch of the city that flat refuses to call it a night. Those are your people — the ones who decided the night was worth more than the alarm. It never asks what time you got here. Responsible is just the polite word for the smaller, quieter version of your life. You can have that any night. You can have this for about two more hours. Go be up too late for once. Go.

What you're getting into
  • Prime Korean BBQ at Park's BBQ
  • 24-hour saunas at Wi Spa's jjimjilbang
  • Private-room karaoke at Pharaoh or Shrine
  • Cocktails at The Line Hotel's lobby bar
  • The Art Deco Wiltern on Wilshire
The Sunset Strip
The Sunset Strip

This is about the Sunset Strip. You're picturing clubbing at twenty-two and deciding you're too old — but that's not the ask. This is the one loud mile where every band you ever loved cut its teeth before anyone knew their name: the Whisky, the Roxy, the Rainbow, the Comedy Store, marquees still buzzing over the same sidewalk that's heard it all. Some nights the air itself feels amplified, like the street remembers every set that ever tore the roof off and is daring tonight to top it. Your people there aren't twenty-two — they're everyone who ever stood where it happened and felt it. Go for one drink and one set. You don't have to close the place down. You just have to be on the mile where it all went down, once, and stop pretending it stopped being yours the day you turned thirty. The marquees are lit right now. Go stand under them. Go.

What you're getting into
  • A rock show at the Whisky a Go Go
  • Stand-up at The Comedy Store
  • Rock memorabilia at the Rainbow Bar & Grill
  • Live bands at the Roxy Theatre
  • Boutiques and cafes at Sunset Plaza
Al pastor from a truck, after dark
Al pastor from a truck, after dark

This is about the truck. Somewhere out there right now, under a bare bulb, a trompo is turning and a line of locals is twenty deep at midnight — and that truck, no address, no sign, is serving the best food in this entire enormous city. Just tacos is what people say who've never stood at the right one. Your people are in that line, and the line is the review — twenty deep past midnight is a verdict nobody could fake, delivered by people who know. What's waiting at home isn't a shortcut; it's a consolation prize you're about to hand yourself. And here's the honest part: you have to hunt for it. The best thing in LA doesn't come to you, doesn't have a website, doesn't deliver. You find the trompo, you find the line, you get in it. It's out there right now, spinning. Go find it and understand why they're all standing there. Go.

What you're getting into
  • Al pastor off the trompo at Leo's Tacos
  • Blue-corn queso tacos at Villa's Tacos
  • Tacos árabes from the Villegas truck
  • Live mariachi at Mariachi Plaza
  • Weekend artisan stalls around the plaza

Concrete floors and very high ceilings ask for a specific kind of record, and that record does not translate to headphones at all. Hard, fast, relentlessly physical, built on the assumption that the venue itself is an instrument. In a space like this it works the way it is supposed to: the kick arrives through your feet before your ears register it and the whole building becomes part of the arrangement. This is the opposite of a connoisseur's night and makes no apology for it. The crowd is large, young and there to be flattened, and the fact that it starts in the late afternoon rather than at midnight tells you it is built for endurance rather than mystery. Not subtle. Occasionally that is precisely the correct order.

Saturday night with a Canadian team in the building is the closest this city gets to the real thing. For generations Saturday has been the night hockey belongs to up there, a fixed point in the week, and Calgary supporters carry that with them - they will tell you about it, at length, entirely unprompted, and they are not actually wrong to. The red sweaters travel in numbers. What makes it work in a room like this one is the contrast: a crowd that grew up inside the sport sitting directly beside a crowd that went out and chose it later in life, each of them louder for the other being there. Downtown on a Saturday evening at least gives you somewhere to go afterwards rather than a car park and a freeway on-ramp. Go, and let somebody from Alberta explain the offside rule to you whether or not you asked them to.

Tech house gets more abuse than any other dance genre and most of it is deserved, which makes the practitioners who take it seriously worth seeking out specifically. Stripped of the novelty vocals and the comedy drops it is an austere, functional music concerned entirely with making a room move efficiently, and in the right hands that efficiency becomes hypnotic rather than boring. A Saturday night in a basement on Las Palmas, the system doing the heavy work, nobody filming. The floor will be full by midnight and stay that way. Go if you have written the whole genre off on the strength of what gets played at festivals, which is a bit like judging guitars by stadium rock. The regulars here treat Saturday as a standing arrangement rather than a decision, and that steadiness is what lets a venue book something unfashionable without worrying.

Hard dubstep has the most clearly defined uniform of any music currently being made, and you can identify the audience from across a parking lot. That visibility is not vanity. It is a membership signal for a scene that spent years being told its music was not music, and the people in it look after each other to a degree that genuinely surprises newcomers. Four names on this bill means the night is built as an escalation rather than a headline slot, with the back-to-back section late on where the two support acts stop being polite. The sound is abrasive by design and physically enormous on a system like this one. First-timers consistently report two things afterwards: that it was louder than they were prepared for, and that total strangers kept checking they were having a good time.

Half past one on a Sunday turns a basketball game into an afternoon rather than an evening, and the difference is larger than it sounds. You arrive in daylight, you leave in daylight, and the whole of Sunday night is still sitting there untouched when you get home. For anybody with a Monday that starts early, this is the only version of the sport that does not cost you something. The crowd is noticeably younger at this hour and considerably less inhibited. Charlotte is not the reason anybody buys a ticket and the building will not pretend otherwise, which makes it a good first visit: no occasion to live up to, no sense that you are supposed to already know things. Make the drive out to Inglewood while the sun is up. The approach to the place is half the experience and it is wasted in the dark. The other advantage of an early Sunday is that the concourse queues never really form, so you can do the whole thing at half time without missing anything.

Playing two California dates on consecutive nights means the band gets two crowds who think they have the same relationship with the records and do not. The LA room skews slightly older and considerably more self-conscious; the songs survive both. What they are is unusually well-built guitar music disguised as something scrappier, hooks that reveal themselves on the fourth listen rather than the first, and lyrics that avoid the self-pity the genre is accused of by being specific instead. An early Sunday start, which the audience will quietly appreciate more than they admit. Go if you have been meaning to and kept not going; this is the one where you stop meaning to. The support slots are worth arriving for and almost nobody does, which is the standing tragedy of a 6:30 door time on a Sunday.

Some nights the opponent is not the point and nobody in the building pretends otherwise. A Tuesday in the middle of November against a club with no history here is the cheapest good seat of the entire season, and the people who turn up are almost entirely locals who wanted to watch basketball rather than visitors who wanted to see a landmark. That makes for a quieter and far more knowledgeable room. You can hear the floor - the squeak, the calls, the actual conversation between players that the broadcast microphones flatten into nothing. If you have only ever been to the marquee nights, come to one of these and find out what the sport sounds like when the occasion is not doing any of the work. Sit lower than you would normally justify, because for once you can. The other advantage of a night nobody wants is that you can move around. Nobody polices an upper-bowl ticket in a half-full building after the first quarter, and everybody who goes regularly already knows it.

A guitarist who can clearly play far more than the songs require, deliberately holding back, is one of the more satisfying things to watch. The playing here comes out of jazz and blues training and gets deployed inside songs that are structurally pop and lyrically very dry, so the whole thing sits at an angle to everything around it. Lines land as jokes and then turn out to be the saddest part. That combination attracts a particular listener: people who want to be entertained and are not willing to be condescended to. The live version is heavier than the recordings and the between-song talk is unusually funny, which catches out anybody who came expecting a serious evening based on the album art. Worth it for the moment mid-set when the restraint drops for about thirty seconds and you understand what has been held back the whole time.

Back-to-back home games are a quiet gift to anybody who works downtown. Two nights, the same walk, the same parking structure you already know the quirks of, and no need to make a plan the second time because you made it the night before. Most people only ever do one of the pair, which is why the Wednesday is consistently the better value of the two. Utah are a familiar visitor with a long shared history in this conference and a travelling support that makes the trip regularly enough to be recognisable. November is still the part of a season where teams are working out what they are, which is more interesting to watch than people give it credit for. Go to the second night. The crowd is smaller, the seats are better and the basketball is identical. Check the start time before you set off either night, too: back-to-backs are frequently scheduled at different hours, and more people get caught by that than by anything else on the calendar.

Writing a song that is genuinely funny and genuinely upsetting at the same time is much harder than doing either, and the people who manage it tend to get filed as novelty for a few years before anybody admits what is going on. The material here is piano-led and conversational, built on the kind of observation you would text a friend rather than announce, and it has found an audience largely made of people who heard one song at exactly the wrong moment in their own life. That makes for an intense room. Everybody is singing, and a surprising number of them are also crying, and nobody appears to find that combination strange. The band arrangements open the songs up considerably from the recordings. Bring the friend who sends you lyrics with no context attached, because they have almost certainly already heard this and will not have mentioned it.

Some recordings always sound slightly too quiet, as if turning them up would be a kind of rudeness. That is usually a songwriter telling you something they have not told many other people. That intimacy is difficult to move into a room with a few hundred people in it. When it works, though, it works in a way a bigger show cannot touch: everyone goes quiet at the same moment without being asked, and you become aware of how many people are holding very still. The promoter putting this on has a reliable instinct for exactly this register, which is why the bill is worth trusting even if the name on it means nothing to you yet. That is arguably the ideal way to arrive. You will not be comparing it to anything. Go on a weeknight, stand closer than feels natural, and let it be the only thing you do that evening.

The closest thing this team has to a neighbour it refuses to take seriously is up the valley in Sacramento, and that dismissiveness has never once been reciprocated. Northern California arrives carrying a grievance that is entirely one-directional, which is a genuinely funny dynamic to sit inside: one half of the building treating it as another Friday, the other half treating it as the night they have been waiting for. Tournament group games sharpen that further, since the arithmetic is public and everybody can do it. A Friday tip means downtown is at its loudest beforehand and the whole area stays open long after the final buzzer. Take the side you do not normally take and see how differently the evening reads from there. Arrive in time for the warmup, which on a tournament night is the one chance to see the painted floor empty and properly lit before twenty thousand people fill the seats around it. It is a genuinely odd sight and it only exists a handful of nights a year.

A club night named after the feeling of dreading Monday is either very funny or slightly bleak depending on how your own week is going, and either way it tells you exactly who it is for. Saturday-night tech house aimed at people with jobs, in a Hollywood Boulevard room, with no pretence that anybody present is doing this for the art. That honesty is refreshing after a certain amount of time spent around dance music that takes itself extremely seriously. The records are functional and well chosen, the floor fills early, and nobody is standing at the back assessing the mix. Recurring nights like this are the backbone of a city's nightlife and get written about never, because there is no news in a thing that reliably happens. Four in the morning is a feeling rather than a time, and a handful of producers build records aimed squarely at it. Not the peak, not the drop, the long stretch afterwards when the room has thinned out and everyone still there has silently agreed to stay. The music that works then has to do two contradictory things at once, keep a floor moving and leave space for people to be somewhere else in their heads, and almost nobody manages both. This is one of the few. There are breakbeats and garage shuffles under it, melodies that resolve somewhere unexpected, and a tendency to let a track run far past where a more nervous DJ would cut it. The basement room on Las Palmas is built for this: the system is the entire budget and the decor is clearly an afterthought. If you have ever stayed to the end and been glad, this is the night to do it again.

By December the novelty of the newest building in the league has finally worn off, and what is left underneath it is just a very good place to watch basketball. The sightlines are better than anywhere else in the city, the concourse lets you keep the floor in view while you queue, and the whole thing was designed by people who had clearly spent a lot of time being annoyed in older arenas. Minnesota are a physical, awkward opponent who make for a grinding sort of game. A Wednesday in early December is about as low-key as the calendar gets. Come to an ordinary night rather than an event, because the building is at its best when nobody is treating it as a destination and you can actually move around in it. Prices in the first week of December are the softest they will be until the new year, because the city's attention is comprehensively elsewhere.

Opening nights at a new venue are worth attending for reasons that have nothing to do with the lineup. Nothing has settled yet: the sound is being learned in real time, the staff do not know the room, and the crowd has no established way of behaving in it. That uncertainty produces an atmosphere a mature venue cannot manufacture. Booking a genuinely well-known name for it is a statement of intent about what the space means to be. The music is moody, vocal-led, built on a sound that was everywhere a decade ago and has aged better than its imitators. Electronics Place is an unglamorous address for an ambitious room. Go early and look at the space before it fills, because this is the only night it will ever be new.

Most people still have not said this team's name out loud. The franchise is new enough that the merchandise comfortably outnumbers the memories, and watching a whole building work out how it feels about an opponent with no history attached to it is genuinely interesting to sit through - there is no grudge to perform and no script anybody has learned, so the noise ends up being about the hockey rather than about the story. December is when a season stops being a novelty and turns into a commitment, and the people in the seats on an early-December Saturday are the ones who will still be here in March when it is raining and nothing is going well. The ice holds up better in winter here, which sounds absurd in a city that does not really have one and is true regardless. Come and meet a team before anybody has decided what to think about it.

A production duo who built a following on records that sound like they were made as a joke and then refuse to stop being good are a specific pleasure, and the garage-inflected end of house music is where that sense of humour survives best. Vocal samples used slightly wrong, basslines that arrive a beat late, arrangements that keep undercutting their own big moments. It should not work on a large floor and does. Avalon in early December is a good pairing for it: an old theatre with genuine grandeur hosting music that is entirely unimpressed with itself. Crowd will be mixed between people who know the records and people brought along, and the second group usually leaves more enthusiastic than the first. A room with sixty people in it and a band nobody has written about yet is the only place certain things can still happen. Everybody there is making the same small bet, and most of the time it does not pay, and occasionally you end up being one of the few dozen people who watched something begin. That arithmetic is the whole appeal and it cannot be replicated at scale. There is no press to read beforehand here, no consensus to agree or disagree with, which means you will be forming your own opinion in real time, from scratch, for the first time in a while. The venue is a converted space on Fletcher with a bar along one wall and no real separation between the band and everybody else, so standing at the back is not an option and nobody is on their phone. Go without looking anything up first. The not-knowing is the part you cannot get back.

Lush, piano-led dream pop made by one person in Liverpool is not an obvious fit for a large downtown Los Angeles room, and that mismatch is most of the appeal. The records are soft enough to be mistaken for background and far sadder than they first appear, built on chord changes that keep resolving somewhere unexpected. Played loud, in a big space, they stop being delicate and become enveloping. Audiences for this are notably quiet and notably young. Acts like this tour the US rarely and skip most of it when they do, so a December date here is less a routine stop than a small window. Take somebody you do not need to talk to for ninety minutes. Support slots on these bills tend to be local and worth arriving for, since a touring act this far off its usual circuit rarely brings its own openers.

Downtown in the middle of December does something it manages at no other point in the year. The plaza is lit, there is a rink outside the building as well as inside it, and the whole stretch between the arena and the restaurants feels briefly like a place people live rather than a place people park. A Saturday night hockey game sits inside that perfectly. Vancouver is the visitor, which means a division game with actual standings consequences and a travelling support that treats a December trip to California as a holiday they have earned. Go early and walk around before you go in. The game is the reason, but the hour beforehand is the part you will describe to somebody afterwards, and it only exists for about three weeks a year. One practical note worth having: the lot prices downtown climb all through December, so the train is genuinely the better call on a Saturday in the middle of the month, and it drops you close enough that you never see a car park at all.

Downtown in the middle of December is lit up for somebody else's event every single night, and walking through that to a basketball game is one of the better ways to use the month. The plaza has a rink on it, the trees are strung, the whole area is briefly pretending to be a town square rather than a traffic problem. A Monday tip is the quiet counterweight to all that: a half-full building, no occasion attached, and a crowd that came out on the worst night of the week in the busiest month of the year specifically to be there. New Orleans is a loose, watchable opponent with nothing much at stake in December. Go for the walk in as much as the game, and leave time for it. Parking downtown in December is the one real cost, so take the train if you can - it drops you close enough that the lit plaza is the walk in rather than an obstacle on the way from a structure.

Comedy rap gets dismissed as a novelty right up until you look at the ticket sales, at which point it becomes clear that a very large number of people would rather have a good time than be seen to have good taste. The bit here is committed to thoroughly: fifties crooner samples, deliberately ridiculous boasting, an aesthetic assembled entirely from thrift-store America. Underneath it the records are genuinely well made, which is the part that keeps it from wearing out. Live it functions as a party rather than a concert, with a crowd that arrives in costume-adjacent outfits and treats the whole thing as participatory. Not a night for anybody protecting a reputation. Ideal for a group who have stopped pretending.

The last Sunday before the city shuts down for a fortnight is a strange, suspended sort of evening. Everybody has either finished work or given up pretending, nobody has travelled yet, and there is a two-day window where the whole place is relaxed and still here. A seven o'clock tip fits neatly inside it. Indiana are a seriously well-drilled opponent who will not be treating the date as a holiday, which keeps the basketball honest while everybody in the seats is comprehensively in holiday mode. This is also the first of two home games in two nights, which almost nobody does both of. Pick this one if you want the fuller building and the better atmosphere; pick tomorrow if you want the better seat for less money. Worth knowing: the two games fall on consecutive evenings, so if you are choosing, the difference is entirely atmosphere against value rather than quality of opponent.
