Los Angeles isn't one city — it's forty neighborhoods that happen to share a freeway. Nobody 'does LA.' You pick a corner of it and go deep: the taco truck that only makes sense at midnight, the canyon trail that empties the whole city out below you, the market downtown where you eat your way around the world in one lunch. It rewards the specific and punishes the checklist. Don't try to see it all. Find your neighborhood and let it be yours for the day.

A day in Los Angeles

Nobody does all of LA in a day — but you can do one good arc across it. Here's a local's route, morning to close, with the address for each.

Morning Start high and early, before the heat and the traffic wake up.
Runyon Canyon
Runyon Canyon

This is about Runyon. Early, right now, before the sun turns the trail to an oven, half of Hollywood is already up there sweating out the week — and ten minutes up the fire road the whole basin cracks open beneath them: the endless grid, the haze going gold, a city so big it stops being a place and turns into a feeling. That's the payoff, and it only exists in the first cool hour. Those are your people, the ones already climbing. Every one of them had a reason to stay in bed. They came anyway, and they're the ones at the top with the whole city at their feet. You don't need Runyon for exercise. You need it for the ten minutes where LA makes sense. The trail's identical next week — that's not the variable. The variable is whether you're on it, or still telling yourself you'll go some morning. Some morning is this morning. Get up. Beat the sun. Go.

What you're getting into
  • Hike the 2.6-mile loop to the Clouds Rest overlook
  • The big off-leash dog run
  • Fuller stairs past the old Errol Flynn estate ruins
  • Hollywood Blvd shops, five minutes downhill
  • Coffee along Hollywood and La Brea after
Hike to the Hollywood Sign
Hike to the Hollywood Sign

This is about the hike up to the Sign. You've looked at those nine white letters your whole life — on postcards, in the opening shot of a hundred movies, through a car window on the 101 — and never once stood underneath them. That's the strange little gap I want to close this morning. Go early, up Canyon Drive before the heat and the crowd: four miles of fire road switchbacking up the back of Griffith, and near the top the whole basin drops away behind you and the Sign stops being a logo and turns into a fifty-foot thing you could almost reach out and touch. Your people up there are the early ones — the few who wanted it without the mob, sweating out the climb instead of shooting it with a long lens from a parking lot. The cost is one early alarm and a bottle of water. By ten it's a slow parade of selfie sticks. Go stand under the most famous sign on earth before the city wakes up and remembers it's there. Go.

What you're getting into
  • Mt. Lee summit — the ridge directly behind the letters
  • Bronson Caves (the 'Batcave'), a short spur off the trail
  • Griffith Observatory & planetarium, a short drive
  • The LA Zoo and the Autry Museum, both in Griffith Park
  • Los Feliz Village after: the Vista Theatre, taco spots
The Getty Center
The Getty Center

This is about the Getty. You've decided art isn't your thing, so let me take the art off the table entirely. Go for the tram that lifts you up out of the traffic until the whole city drops away. Go for the pale travertine and the gardens that don't seem to belong to LA at all and the view of the entire basin from the top of the hill. Go because it's free — you only ever pay to park — and because you come back down every single time feeling like a slightly better-made version of yourself, and you didn't look at one painting to get there. Your people up there aren't art people; they wanted a few hours that felt bigger than their week and found the cheapest way in the city to buy it. The Getty is the rare place that works on the people who think it's not for them. Doors open, tram running, right now. Go feel like the better version for an afternoon. Go.

What you're getting into
  • Ride the free tram up the hillside
  • Robert Irwin's Central Garden maze
  • Van Gogh's 'Irises' in the galleries
  • Picnic the lawns over the 405
  • The Skirball Cultural Center, ten minutes away
Afternoon Come down the hill — eat, wander, and end up at the water.
Grand Central Market
Grand Central Market

This is about Grand Central Market. Right now, under one roof downtown, a hundred years of the city is eating lunch — neon buzzing, steam off a dozen counters, a line at the taco stall and the egg sandwich place and the one you've never heard of that's probably the best. All of LA pressed into one loud, glorious room. The thing you'll eat near home instead, you've already forgotten — that's the honest comparison. Not closer versus farther. Forgettable versus a meal you'll actually tell someone about. Your people there understood lunch can be an event if you drive twenty minutes for it, and they never skip the longest line, because the longest line is usually the point. It's been happening for a century and a parking garage is the whole cost of admission. Skip the sad desk lunch. Drive down and eat your way around the world. Go.

What you're getting into
  • Eggslut, Ramen Hood, and a century of food stalls
  • Ride the Angels Flight funicular across the street
  • The Bradbury Building's iron atrium next door
  • The Last Bookstore, two blocks south
  • Walt Disney Concert Hall, an 8-minute walk
Hollywood Walk of Fame
Hollywood Walk of Fame

This is about the Walk of Fame — and yeah, it's a trap. Grimy, tacky, wall-to-wall tourists, and you should still do it once, on purpose, eyes open. Stand on the boulevard fifteen minutes and feel it: every dreamer who ever stepped off a Greyhound onto that sidewalk, dead certain this was the street where it finally happens for them. The whole city runs on that particular delusion and you've never once stood in the middle of it. Your people here, weirdly, are everyone — the whole busload of believers. You go once so you've touched the myth, then get on with the real LA and never go back. It costs fifteen minutes and a little of your dignity. Skipping it forever isn't taste — it's avoidance dressed up as taste. Duck into the TCL courtyard for the handprints while you're there. Go get it out of your system, today, not someday. Go.

What you're getting into
  • Match the handprints in the TCL Chinese Theatre forecourt
  • Catch an IMAX premiere at TCL
  • The Dolby Theatre, home of the Oscars
  • Madame Tussauds wax figures next door
  • Shop and eat at the Ovation Hollywood complex
Santa Monica Pier
Santa Monica Pier

This is about the Pier. It's crowded, a little cheap, and you're already halfway to talking yourself out of it — which means you're about to be too cool for the exact thing you came to California for. Right now the Ferris wheel is turning against the Pacific and the whole coast is going amber, the end of Route 66 and the edge of the continent in the same gust of salt air. That's not beneath you. That is a day at the LA beach. Your people out there are the ones who let themselves have it — rode the cheesy wheel, ate the bad churro, stood at the rail as the light went. Ride it, then rent a bike and head south to Venice where the real day keeps going. You can spend the evening being above it all, or you can spend it in it — and only one of those has an ocean in it. The light's going right now. Go get on the wheel. Go.

What you're getting into
  • Ride the solar Pacific Wheel at Pacific Park
  • The official Route 66 'End of the Trail' sign
  • Midway games and the West Coaster
  • Rent bikes on the Marvin Braude beach path
  • Third Street Promenade shops, ten minutes up
Venice Beach Boardwalk
Venice Beach Boardwalk

This is about the Venice Boardwalk. You've heard it's dirty and weird and a little unhinged, and you're using all three as reasons to stay away — when they're the whole reason to go. Two miles of oceanfront concrete where nothing's curated and nobody's performing for a brand: a guy playing electric guitar on roller skates, bodybuilders grunting at the original Muscle Beach, kids dropping into the skate bowl, fortune tellers, murals painted over every week, incense and funnel cake and the Pacific throwing itself at the sand fifty feet away. It's the last stretch of Los Angeles nobody ever polished or sponsored or turned into content. Your people down there are the ones who came to watch the whole human parade and let it be strange around them, instead of deciding they were above it. It's free — it's always been free — and the only cost is parking and a little of your composure. Rent a beach cruiser and ride the entire two miles of glorious chaos. Go see the city with its makeup off. Go.

What you're getting into
  • The original Muscle Beach outdoor gym
  • Venice Skate Park, right on the sand
  • Abbot Kinney shops & restaurants, a few blocks inland
  • The Venice Canals, five minutes south
  • Bike north to the Santa Monica Pier or south to the Marina
Golden hour Get above the city as the light goes — the hour LA saves for its best trick.
Griffith Observatory at dusk
Griffith Observatory at dusk

This is about Griffith at dusk. The traffic up the hill is real, and I won't pretend it isn't — but every person standing on that lawn as the city switches on beneath them fought the exact same traffic, and not one is thinking about it anymore. Because right as the light fails, the whole basin lights up under you — ten thousand streets coming on at once, running gold to the horizon — and it costs nothing but the drive to be there for it. Those are your people: the ones who wanted the view more than they hated the parking crawl for one evening. The view outlasts the traffic by about a decade — a rough half hour in the car for a thing you'll still see with your eyes closed years from now. And it's a dusk thing: a twenty-minute window when it's perfect, then it's just night. Leave now and you catch it right as it turns. Leave now. Go.

What you're getting into
  • Look through the free public Zeiss telescope
  • A planetarium show under the Oschin dome
  • Hike the Mt. Hollywood trail for Sign views
  • A concert at the neighboring Greek Theatre
  • The LA Zoo and Autry Museum, a short drive

Dodger Stadium
Dodger Stadium

This is about Dodger Stadium. You're stuck on the ticket and the traffic, so: the upper deck is cheap, and the sunset over Chavez Ravine comes free with every seat in the building. Right now, if they're home, fifty thousand people are on their feet, palms cut black against a pink sky, the roar building in the dark, a Dodger dog in hand — the oldest ritual this city still shows up for. And here's the thing you're actually missing, and it isn't baseball: you don't have to know a single player to want to be inside a crowd that cares about anything that hard. That feeling — fifty thousand people leaning the same way at once — is what you're short on. Not sports. The ticket's on your phone in ninety seconds, the traffic's the tax, and the ravine at sunset is what it buys. A bargain. Go get in the car. Go.

What you're getting into
  • A Dodgers home game in season
  • The 90-minute tour: dugout, press box, trophies
  • The 'Take the Field' batting experience
  • Hike Elysian Park's Academy Road loop nearby
  • Olvera Street and Union Station, minutes away

After dark The city LA becomes when everywhere else has closed — and it's only getting started.
Koreatown after midnight
Koreatown after midnight

This is about Koreatown, right now, this late. You're telling yourself to be responsible and sleep. But sleep is the one thing available to you every single night for the rest of your life — you will never run out of it — so spending a Saturday on it is spending the cheapest thing you own. Meanwhile Ktown is only getting louder: grills hissing behind fogged-up windows, a karaoke room three floors up leaking somebody's whole heart into the street, soju turning a table of strangers into a table of friends, the one stretch of the city that flat refuses to call it a night. Those are your people — the ones who decided the night was worth more than the alarm. It never asks what time you got here. Responsible is just the polite word for the smaller, quieter version of your life. You can have that any night. You can have this for about two more hours. Go be up too late for once. Go.

What you're getting into
  • Prime Korean BBQ at Park's BBQ
  • 24-hour saunas at Wi Spa's jjimjilbang
  • Private-room karaoke at Pharaoh or Shrine
  • Cocktails at The Line Hotel's lobby bar
  • The Art Deco Wiltern on Wilshire
The Sunset Strip
The Sunset Strip

This is about the Sunset Strip. You're picturing clubbing at twenty-two and deciding you're too old — but that's not the ask. This is the one loud mile where every band you ever loved cut its teeth before anyone knew their name: the Whisky, the Roxy, the Rainbow, the Comedy Store, marquees still buzzing over the same sidewalk that's heard it all. Some nights the air itself feels amplified, like the street remembers every set that ever tore the roof off and is daring tonight to top it. Your people there aren't twenty-two — they're everyone who ever stood where it happened and felt it. Go for one drink and one set. You don't have to close the place down. You just have to be on the mile where it all went down, once, and stop pretending it stopped being yours the day you turned thirty. The marquees are lit right now. Go stand under them. Go.

What you're getting into
  • A rock show at the Whisky a Go Go
  • Stand-up at The Comedy Store
  • Rock memorabilia at the Rainbow Bar & Grill
  • Live bands at the Roxy Theatre
  • Boutiques and cafes at Sunset Plaza
Al pastor from a truck, after dark
Al pastor from a truck, after dark

This is about the truck. Somewhere out there right now, under a bare bulb, a trompo is turning and a line of locals is twenty deep at midnight — and that truck, no address, no sign, is serving the best food in this entire enormous city. Just tacos is what people say who've never stood at the right one. Your people are in that line, and the line is the review — twenty deep past midnight is a verdict nobody could fake, delivered by people who know. What's waiting at home isn't a shortcut; it's a consolation prize you're about to hand yourself. And here's the honest part: you have to hunt for it. The best thing in LA doesn't come to you, doesn't have a website, doesn't deliver. You find the trompo, you find the line, you get in it. It's out there right now, spinning. Go find it and understand why they're all standing there. Go.

What you're getting into
  • Al pastor off the trompo at Leo's Tacos
  • Blue-corn queso tacos at Villa's Tacos
  • Tacos árabes from the Villegas truck
  • Live mariachi at Mariachi Plaza
  • Weekend artisan stalls around the plaza

LA Clippers vs. Denver Nuggets
Dec 21, 2026 Intuit Dome, 3930 W Century Blvd, …

This is the second of two home games in two nights, which makes it reliably the cheaper and emptier of the pair - most of the city makes one plan rather than two, and the resale market notices within an hour of the first game ending. It is also by some distance the better fixture. Denver bring one of the genuinely elite sides in the league and a player whose passing only makes sense from a seat where you can see the entire floor at once, which is the strongest argument anybody has ever made for going in person. A half past seven Monday tip four days before Christmas means a building full of people who have mentally finished the year. Take the second night. Better opponent, better seats, less money - the only thing you lose is the crowd, and Denver will supply enough of their own. Check the tip time for both nights before committing, because consecutive home games are routinely scheduled at different hours and that trips up more people than anything else.

Two days before Christmas the city has already half left, and the freeways prove it. Whoever is still here on the twenty-third is here by choice or by obligation, and the ones who choose to spend the evening downtown get an unusually easy version of it: the drive works, the parking works, and the building is full of people in a conspicuously good mood. Denver is a real test, one of the genuinely elite opponents on the calendar and a team whose best player does things that are worth seeing in person rather than on a screen, because the passing only makes sense when you can see the whole floor at once. Go the night before everything shuts. It is the last ordinary evening of the year and it is better used than wasted. One practical note: the twenty-third is the last night the surrounding restaurants keep normal hours, so dinner afterwards is genuinely possible rather than theoretical.

Two days before Christmas with the team from up the coast in town is a better Wednesday than anybody has any right to expect. The city has half emptied, the freeways briefly behave, and the people still here are in a conspicuously good mood about it. Golden State visiting brings a travelling support that drives rather than flies and turns up in numbers that make the building noticeably less one-sided than usual - which, in a room designed specifically to be hostile to visitors, produces a genuine contest in the stands as well as on the floor. Late December also means rosters are settled and teams have stopped experimenting. Go on the last ordinary night of the year, when everything still works and nothing is shut. One practical note - the twenty-third is the last night the places around the building keep normal hours, so dinner afterwards is genuinely possible rather than theoretical.

Christmas afternoon is the one day of the year when the entire country watches basketball at the same time, and this building has been the centre of it for as long as the tradition has existed. A two o'clock tip means the morning belongs to whatever your family does with mornings and the evening belongs to dinner, and the middle of the day belongs to this. The room feels different: people in new sweaters they were given four hours earlier, a national audience that makes the players noticeably sharper, and an occasion that everybody in the building has consciously chosen over sitting at home. Philadelphia is the visitor, which is a proper opponent rather than a scheduling courtesy. This is the hardest regular-season ticket of the year here and the only one where the date matters more than the result. Decide about it early. It does not get cheaper, ever.

Boxing Day means nothing whatsoever in this country, which is precisely the opportunity. The rest of the city is sitting at home in a sort of post-Christmas stupor with no plan and no inclination to make one, while there is a professional basketball game happening in Inglewood at half past seven that almost nobody has thought about. The building on the day after Christmas has a loose, slightly delirious quality - people in new clothes they were given thirty-six hours earlier, nobody working tomorrow, no stakes attached to anything. Memphis play fast and chaotically, which suits the mood entirely. If you have house guests and have exhausted every conversation, this solves an entire evening and asks nothing of anybody except that they get in the car. Prices on the day after Christmas are among the gentlest of the year, because almost nobody plans for it in advance and the market never gets the chance to firm up.

The week between Christmas and New Year has no rules and no shape. Nobody knows what day it is, half the city is somewhere else, the other half has given up on routine entirely, and a six o'clock Sunday tip is one of the few fixed points available. Memphis is a young, fast, slightly chaotic opponent, which suits the week. The crowd is a strange mix at this time of year - locals with nothing on, visiting families who built a trip around it, and a significant number of people who were given tickets two days earlier and had no say in the matter. That mix makes for a warmer building than a normal December Sunday. Use the dead week on something. It is the one stretch of the year when an evening out costs you nothing you had planned. Buy earlier than you would for a normal Sunday. Holiday-week games draw visiting families who booked months ago, and the good seats go long before the locals get round to deciding.

Second night in a row and the dead week is still going. Nobody knows what day it is, half the city is somewhere else, and the people who turn up on consecutive evenings between Christmas and New Year are a specific and rather admirable breed. Philadelphia are a proper opponent rather than a holiday courtesy, which gives the evening some spine. A six o'clock Sunday tip means you are out before nine with the night still available, which matters more in a week where the ordinary rules about bedtimes have already collapsed. Seats for the second of a back-to-back are always the best value on the calendar. Spend the difference on sitting low enough to hear the floor, which is the thing that converts people and the thing television has never once managed to transmit. Arrive in time for the warmup if you can. In the dead week it is noticeably more relaxed than usual and you often get closer to the floor than the ticket strictly entitles you to.

By the twenty-ninth nobody can reliably name the day of the week, which is the correct state in which to attend a basketball game. A half past seven tip on a Tuesday that may as well be a Saturday, a building full of people in the same temporal fog, and a Houston side who play fast enough to wake anybody up. The last week of the calendar year is also when teams start revealing what they actually are - the early-season excuses have expired and the standings have begun to mean something. Downtown is quiet enough this week that the parking and the traffic both behave. Go while the city is still half empty and the whole thing is easy, because the first full week of January puts everything back the way it was. If you have people staying and have exhausted the obvious options, this solves an entire evening and asks nothing of anybody beyond turning up.

Riddim is the most repetitive music anybody is currently making on purpose, and the repetition is the entire argument. One idea, stated, restated, and restated again with a slightly different weight each time, for ninety minutes. Described in writing it sounds unbearable. In a room with the right system it does something closer to meditation by brute force, and the scene around it is among the most devoted and least documented in American dance music. The artist headlining built that audience largely by refusing to broaden, which earns a particular loyalty. Two days before New Year is also a deliberate slot: everybody is between obligations and nobody has anywhere to be in the morning. Expect a crowd that knows every drop in advance and loses it anyway, which is the opposite of how surprise is supposed to work.

Four people sent the same link inside a minute, none of them having checked whether the others already had. That is how a certain kind of person finds out a band they had quietly written off is playing again. Oakland built this sound across forty years, and most of what followed — the slow heavy bands, the ones with no chorus and no hurry — is downstream of it. The shows are famously not fun in the ordinary sense. Volume gets treated as a physical material, songs take eleven minutes to arrive somewhere, and the lighting has historically been nearer to total darkness than to anything a venue would bill as production. People describe leaving these gigs the way they describe leaving a long hike. Two nights into a new year is an odd slot for it, which is exactly right. Everyone in that room chose this over recovering. The Wiltern, Saturday January 2, 2027, 7pm. Earplugs are not optional and nobody will think less of you.

Kansas City travels better than any other support in this league and they have had years of practice at turning SoFi into something that does not sound like a home game. Red everywhere in the concourse, a genuine contest for the building, and a home crowd that arrives knowing it has to work for its own room. That is the fixture. It lands in the strange gap between the holidays and the new year, when half the city is still off and nobody is entirely sure what day it is, which gives the whole thing a loose, slightly delirious quality on top of a division game with real consequences attached. One important practical note before you plan anything around it: the NFL has not set the kickoff time yet. Week 17 is flex-scheduled and the slot is decided late, so check the official listing in the days beforehand rather than trusting any time you see now, including ours.

There is no second-place rivalry in this sport. Everything else is a fixture; this is the thing the league was built on, and the building knows it from the moment the away sweaters start appearing in the concourse - green, in numbers, worn by people who have flown a long way to be outnumbered and are entirely comfortable with that. The noise is different for this one. Calls go against the home side and the reaction is not irritation but something closer to grievance, inherited and well rehearsed. January is early enough that the standings do not yet distort it, which means you get the rivalry undiluted. This is the second-hardest ticket of the regular season here after Christmas. Everybody who was ever going to go has already decided, so decide now rather than in a fortnight. Get there early for the warmup. The away support gathers behind one basket and the sound when their players come out is unlike anything else this building produces in a regular season.

The night after a rivalry game is the strangest ticket in basketball. The building is still faintly exhausted, the crowd is a fraction of the size, and whatever happened twenty-four hours earlier is sitting over the whole evening unmentioned. It is also, reliably, the best value weekend night of the season: everybody spent their money and their enthusiasm the night before, so the seats are reachable and the queues are gone. Detroit is a rebuilding opponent with young players worth watching precisely because nobody has decided about them yet. A Friday tip with no occasion attached and a half-empty lower bowl is a genuinely lovely way to watch basketball. Come the night after rather than the night of, and spend the difference on sitting somewhere you can see faces from. Worth knowing before you plan: the two games fall on consecutive nights, so if you want both, the second one is the one to spend less on and enjoy more.

The first good Saturday of a new year arrives with almost nothing attached to it. The holidays have finished, the resolutions have not yet collapsed, nobody has plans, and a six o'clock face-off is early enough that the evening afterwards still exists. January is also when ticket prices make the most sense all season - the casual demand has gone and the building is left to people who actually want to be in it. Dallas is a genuinely serious opponent, the sort that makes a tight, fast, low-scoring game rather than a loose one, which is the version of this sport that converts sceptics. Take somebody who has been saying no since October. This is the night the excuse runs out. Arrive for the warmup rather than the anthem. Twenty minutes of watching professionals casually do things that look impossible is the part that converts people, and it costs nothing beyond leaving the house slightly earlier than you meant to.

The most decorated club in the sport visiting the newest building in it is a contrast worth turning up for. Boston arrive with a century of accumulated certainty and an away support that travels anywhere in the country in numbers, wearing green, entirely comfortable with being outnumbered. This arena was specifically designed to make that difficult - the steep section behind one basket does not sell to visitors at all - so what you get is a genuine fight for the building rather than the usual polite coexistence. A Saturday in January is the prime slot of the week. Expect it to be among the louder nights of the season out here and buy accordingly, because this is one of the few fixtures where the price does not soften in the final week. Enough green in the away end to be audible from anywhere in the bowl is how you know which fixture this is. Seattle is the oldest live grudge in this division, a rivalry carried by two fanbases who have spent twenty years ruining each other Januaries, and they travel down in numbers for the last weekend of a season. By the final week everything has collapsed into arithmetic: seeding, tiebreakers, and a scoreboard in the corner that half the building watches more closely than the field. Few things in sport are as tense as a full stadium doing mental maths in real time, and a closing home game against a rival is the purest version of it. One thing to know before you build a day around it: the league has not announced the kickoff time. The final week is flex-scheduled on purpose so that the games that matter get the best windows, so confirm the slot officially in the days beforehand rather than from any listing, this one included.

Jan 11, 2027 Intuit Dome, 3930 W Century Blvd, …

The third meeting of the season and both sets of supporters have long since stopped being polite. What makes this rivalry unlike any other in the sport is that nobody travels for it: the away end is made up of people who finished work, got on the 110 or the 405, and drove twelve miles to sit among colleagues and be unbearable. They will see each other on Tuesday morning. That proximity gives the whole thing a domestic, personal quality that a hundred-year rivalry between distant cities cannot replicate. Out here the home side has the architecture on its side, which the visiting half resents openly and loudly. A Monday tip does nothing to soften any of it. Pick a side before you walk in, because the building will make you pick one anyway. Arrive earlier than you would for an ordinary Monday, too. The lots for this fixture fill the way they do for a weekend game, and nobody expects that on a school night.

The holiday crowd has gone, the tourists have gone, the people who come once a year to say they have been have already come, and what is left on a Thursday is the constituency - season-ticket holders, regulars, people who know the ushers by name. The basketball is better watched in that room than in a full one. Orlando arrive as a young side with a couple of players who will be famous within two years and are currently merely very good, which is the most interesting moment to catch anybody. Midweek in January is also the softest the resale market gets all season. If there is a seat in this building you have always wanted and never justified, this is the week the arithmetic finally works. Watch the young players on the visiting side rather than the scoreboard. In two years you will be paying considerably more to see exactly the same people do exactly the same things.

The lot fills slowly and you can walk the concourse without turning sideways, which tells you everything about what sort of night this is. No rivalry, no travelling army, nothing anybody has an opinion about in advance - which leaves a room made almost entirely of local people who wanted to watch basketball at the end of a working week, and that is a markedly better crowd than a famous fixture produces. Orlando are young and genuinely good and carry two or three players who will be expensive to watch within a couple of years. Mid-January is also the softest the resale market gets all season out here. If there is a seat in this building you have looked at online and never once justified, this is the fortnight when the arithmetic finally works in your favour. Friday out here also means the plaza stays busy well after the final buzzer, so there is somewhere to go afterwards rather than a straight walk back to a dark car park.

The Sunday of a long weekend is the most underused night in this city. Everybody is out of rhythm, nobody has to be anywhere on Monday, and the usual Sunday-evening dread simply is not there - which makes a six o'clock tip feel like a Saturday that nobody has to pay for. Milwaukee is a proper opponent and a genuine test, the kind of fixture that produces an actual contest rather than a procession. Downtown on a holiday Sunday is unusually calm: the office crowd is gone, the traffic is gone, and the whole area belongs to whoever decided to use the day. Take the Monday off being a Monday and spend the Sunday properly. There are only two or three weekends a year arranged this kindly. Downtown parking is also at its cheapest on a holiday Sunday, which is a small thing until you have paid the Friday rate once and remembered it ever since.

The 405 on the third Monday in January is doing something it almost never does, which is moving. Most of the city treats the holiday as a day to catch up on sleep, and the result is clear freeways, quiet lots and an entire basketball game sitting there in the evening for anybody who noticed it was happening at all. Phoenix are a division opponent, so by this stage of the season the standings give it genuine weight. A building on a holiday has a looser feel than a normal Monday: nobody is watching the clock, nobody has to be up especially early, and the concourse stays busy between quarters instead of emptying out the moment play stops. Use the day off on something you will remember rather than on the washing. The lots fill later than usual on a holiday as well, since nobody is coming straight from an office, which makes arriving twenty minutes before tip genuinely viable for once.

The newest fanbase in the league is also the least cynical, and that turns out to be contagious. A club with barely any history has supporters who have not yet learned to be disappointed, who still think turning up is the point, and who travel down the coast in numbers that make a Tuesday in January sound like something more than it is. The home crowd tends to respond in kind. This is a good room for a first game precisely because neither side is performing a decades-old grudge at you - the noise is about what is happening on the ice in front of you rather than about something that happened in 1993. Sit in the lower bowl behind a net if you can. The game makes more sense from there than from anywhere else in the building. It is worth knowing that this is the first of two visits from the same opponent inside five weeks, so if the January date does not suit, the February one will - though by then the standings will have started to matter and the room will be tighter for it.

Once or twice a season this building fills up for somebody who does not play here. It is an odd thing to witness: an away sweater on every third person in the concourse, a ripple of noise every time one particular player touches the puck, and a home crowd caught between wanting to win and wanting to have seen something. Edmonton has been that visit for years now. Tickets for this one move faster than for anything else on the regular-season calendar and they do not come back down. If you only go to one hockey game this winter, the honest advice is that this is the one where the thing you came to see is most likely to actually happen in front of you. Buy early or do not bother. Resale for this fixture does not soften in the final week the way it does for the rest of the calendar, because the people holding tickets know exactly what they are holding and the visiting support will pay whatever is asked.

The second meeting with the same opponent inside two months is when familiarity starts to bite. Whatever happened in November is still in the room, carried by both benches and by everybody who watched it, and a fixture that looked like filler on the schedule has quietly acquired an argument. Sacramento travels down in numbers that surprise people who assume nobody cares about that rivalry except the north. A Friday tip downtown is the busiest the area gets all week and worth arriving early for on its own merits. By late January the standings have become real enough that a conference game stops being decorative. Come for the one the schedule-makers did not intend to matter and often does. Arrive early enough to see which end the visiting support has gathered behind; for this fixture it is usually larger than anybody from this city expects it to be. Friday nights downtown also mean everything stays open afterwards, so the evening does not have to end at the final buzzer the way a Tuesday one does.
