Los Angeles isn't one city — it's forty neighborhoods that happen to share a freeway. Nobody 'does LA.' You pick a corner of it and go deep: the taco truck that only makes sense at midnight, the canyon trail that empties the whole city out below you, the market downtown where you eat your way around the world in one lunch. It rewards the specific and punishes the checklist. Don't try to see it all. Find your neighborhood and let it be yours for the day.

A day in Los Angeles

Nobody does all of LA in a day — but you can do one good arc across it. Here's a local's route, morning to close, with the address for each.

Morning Start high and early, before the heat and the traffic wake up.
Runyon Canyon
Runyon Canyon

This is about Runyon. Early, right now, before the sun turns the trail to an oven, half of Hollywood is already up there sweating out the week — and ten minutes up the fire road the whole basin cracks open beneath them: the endless grid, the haze going gold, a city so big it stops being a place and turns into a feeling. That's the payoff, and it only exists in the first cool hour. Those are your people, the ones already climbing. Every one of them had a reason to stay in bed. They came anyway, and they're the ones at the top with the whole city at their feet. You don't need Runyon for exercise. You need it for the ten minutes where LA makes sense. The trail's identical next week — that's not the variable. The variable is whether you're on it, or still telling yourself you'll go some morning. Some morning is this morning. Get up. Beat the sun. Go.

What you're getting into
  • Hike the 2.6-mile loop to the Clouds Rest overlook
  • The big off-leash dog run
  • Fuller stairs past the old Errol Flynn estate ruins
  • Hollywood Blvd shops, five minutes downhill
  • Coffee along Hollywood and La Brea after
Hike to the Hollywood Sign
Hike to the Hollywood Sign

This is about the hike up to the Sign. You've looked at those nine white letters your whole life — on postcards, in the opening shot of a hundred movies, through a car window on the 101 — and never once stood underneath them. That's the strange little gap I want to close this morning. Go early, up Canyon Drive before the heat and the crowd: four miles of fire road switchbacking up the back of Griffith, and near the top the whole basin drops away behind you and the Sign stops being a logo and turns into a fifty-foot thing you could almost reach out and touch. Your people up there are the early ones — the few who wanted it without the mob, sweating out the climb instead of shooting it with a long lens from a parking lot. The cost is one early alarm and a bottle of water. By ten it's a slow parade of selfie sticks. Go stand under the most famous sign on earth before the city wakes up and remembers it's there. Go.

What you're getting into
  • Mt. Lee summit — the ridge directly behind the letters
  • Bronson Caves (the 'Batcave'), a short spur off the trail
  • Griffith Observatory & planetarium, a short drive
  • The LA Zoo and the Autry Museum, both in Griffith Park
  • Los Feliz Village after: the Vista Theatre, taco spots
The Getty Center
The Getty Center

This is about the Getty. You've decided art isn't your thing, so let me take the art off the table entirely. Go for the tram that lifts you up out of the traffic until the whole city drops away. Go for the pale travertine and the gardens that don't seem to belong to LA at all and the view of the entire basin from the top of the hill. Go because it's free — you only ever pay to park — and because you come back down every single time feeling like a slightly better-made version of yourself, and you didn't look at one painting to get there. Your people up there aren't art people; they wanted a few hours that felt bigger than their week and found the cheapest way in the city to buy it. The Getty is the rare place that works on the people who think it's not for them. Doors open, tram running, right now. Go feel like the better version for an afternoon. Go.

What you're getting into
  • Ride the free tram up the hillside
  • Robert Irwin's Central Garden maze
  • Van Gogh's 'Irises' in the galleries
  • Picnic the lawns over the 405
  • The Skirball Cultural Center, ten minutes away
Afternoon Come down the hill — eat, wander, and end up at the water.
Grand Central Market
Grand Central Market

This is about Grand Central Market. Right now, under one roof downtown, a hundred years of the city is eating lunch — neon buzzing, steam off a dozen counters, a line at the taco stall and the egg sandwich place and the one you've never heard of that's probably the best. All of LA pressed into one loud, glorious room. The thing you'll eat near home instead, you've already forgotten — that's the honest comparison. Not closer versus farther. Forgettable versus a meal you'll actually tell someone about. Your people there understood lunch can be an event if you drive twenty minutes for it, and they never skip the longest line, because the longest line is usually the point. It's been happening for a century and a parking garage is the whole cost of admission. Skip the sad desk lunch. Drive down and eat your way around the world. Go.

What you're getting into
  • Eggslut, Ramen Hood, and a century of food stalls
  • Ride the Angels Flight funicular across the street
  • The Bradbury Building's iron atrium next door
  • The Last Bookstore, two blocks south
  • Walt Disney Concert Hall, an 8-minute walk
Hollywood Walk of Fame
Hollywood Walk of Fame

This is about the Walk of Fame — and yeah, it's a trap. Grimy, tacky, wall-to-wall tourists, and you should still do it once, on purpose, eyes open. Stand on the boulevard fifteen minutes and feel it: every dreamer who ever stepped off a Greyhound onto that sidewalk, dead certain this was the street where it finally happens for them. The whole city runs on that particular delusion and you've never once stood in the middle of it. Your people here, weirdly, are everyone — the whole busload of believers. You go once so you've touched the myth, then get on with the real LA and never go back. It costs fifteen minutes and a little of your dignity. Skipping it forever isn't taste — it's avoidance dressed up as taste. Duck into the TCL courtyard for the handprints while you're there. Go get it out of your system, today, not someday. Go.

What you're getting into
  • Match the handprints in the TCL Chinese Theatre forecourt
  • Catch an IMAX premiere at TCL
  • The Dolby Theatre, home of the Oscars
  • Madame Tussauds wax figures next door
  • Shop and eat at the Ovation Hollywood complex
Santa Monica Pier
Santa Monica Pier

This is about the Pier. It's crowded, a little cheap, and you're already halfway to talking yourself out of it — which means you're about to be too cool for the exact thing you came to California for. Right now the Ferris wheel is turning against the Pacific and the whole coast is going amber, the end of Route 66 and the edge of the continent in the same gust of salt air. That's not beneath you. That is a day at the LA beach. Your people out there are the ones who let themselves have it — rode the cheesy wheel, ate the bad churro, stood at the rail as the light went. Ride it, then rent a bike and head south to Venice where the real day keeps going. You can spend the evening being above it all, or you can spend it in it — and only one of those has an ocean in it. The light's going right now. Go get on the wheel. Go.

What you're getting into
  • Ride the solar Pacific Wheel at Pacific Park
  • The official Route 66 'End of the Trail' sign
  • Midway games and the West Coaster
  • Rent bikes on the Marvin Braude beach path
  • Third Street Promenade shops, ten minutes up
Venice Beach Boardwalk
Venice Beach Boardwalk

This is about the Venice Boardwalk. You've heard it's dirty and weird and a little unhinged, and you're using all three as reasons to stay away — when they're the whole reason to go. Two miles of oceanfront concrete where nothing's curated and nobody's performing for a brand: a guy playing electric guitar on roller skates, bodybuilders grunting at the original Muscle Beach, kids dropping into the skate bowl, fortune tellers, murals painted over every week, incense and funnel cake and the Pacific throwing itself at the sand fifty feet away. It's the last stretch of Los Angeles nobody ever polished or sponsored or turned into content. Your people down there are the ones who came to watch the whole human parade and let it be strange around them, instead of deciding they were above it. It's free — it's always been free — and the only cost is parking and a little of your composure. Rent a beach cruiser and ride the entire two miles of glorious chaos. Go see the city with its makeup off. Go.

What you're getting into
  • The original Muscle Beach outdoor gym
  • Venice Skate Park, right on the sand
  • Abbot Kinney shops & restaurants, a few blocks inland
  • The Venice Canals, five minutes south
  • Bike north to the Santa Monica Pier or south to the Marina
Golden hour Get above the city as the light goes — the hour LA saves for its best trick.
Griffith Observatory at dusk
Griffith Observatory at dusk

This is about Griffith at dusk. The traffic up the hill is real, and I won't pretend it isn't — but every person standing on that lawn as the city switches on beneath them fought the exact same traffic, and not one is thinking about it anymore. Because right as the light fails, the whole basin lights up under you — ten thousand streets coming on at once, running gold to the horizon — and it costs nothing but the drive to be there for it. Those are your people: the ones who wanted the view more than they hated the parking crawl for one evening. The view outlasts the traffic by about a decade — a rough half hour in the car for a thing you'll still see with your eyes closed years from now. And it's a dusk thing: a twenty-minute window when it's perfect, then it's just night. Leave now and you catch it right as it turns. Leave now. Go.

What you're getting into
  • Look through the free public Zeiss telescope
  • A planetarium show under the Oschin dome
  • Hike the Mt. Hollywood trail for Sign views
  • A concert at the neighboring Greek Theatre
  • The LA Zoo and Autry Museum, a short drive

Dodger Stadium
Dodger Stadium

This is about Dodger Stadium. You're stuck on the ticket and the traffic, so: the upper deck is cheap, and the sunset over Chavez Ravine comes free with every seat in the building. Right now, if they're home, fifty thousand people are on their feet, palms cut black against a pink sky, the roar building in the dark, a Dodger dog in hand — the oldest ritual this city still shows up for. And here's the thing you're actually missing, and it isn't baseball: you don't have to know a single player to want to be inside a crowd that cares about anything that hard. That feeling — fifty thousand people leaning the same way at once — is what you're short on. Not sports. The ticket's on your phone in ninety seconds, the traffic's the tax, and the ravine at sunset is what it buys. A bargain. Go get in the car. Go.

What you're getting into
  • A Dodgers home game in season
  • The 90-minute tour: dugout, press box, trophies
  • The 'Take the Field' batting experience
  • Hike Elysian Park's Academy Road loop nearby
  • Olvera Street and Union Station, minutes away

After dark The city LA becomes when everywhere else has closed — and it's only getting started.
Koreatown after midnight
Koreatown after midnight

This is about Koreatown, right now, this late. You're telling yourself to be responsible and sleep. But sleep is the one thing available to you every single night for the rest of your life — you will never run out of it — so spending a Saturday on it is spending the cheapest thing you own. Meanwhile Ktown is only getting louder: grills hissing behind fogged-up windows, a karaoke room three floors up leaking somebody's whole heart into the street, soju turning a table of strangers into a table of friends, the one stretch of the city that flat refuses to call it a night. Those are your people — the ones who decided the night was worth more than the alarm. It never asks what time you got here. Responsible is just the polite word for the smaller, quieter version of your life. You can have that any night. You can have this for about two more hours. Go be up too late for once. Go.

What you're getting into
  • Prime Korean BBQ at Park's BBQ
  • 24-hour saunas at Wi Spa's jjimjilbang
  • Private-room karaoke at Pharaoh or Shrine
  • Cocktails at The Line Hotel's lobby bar
  • The Art Deco Wiltern on Wilshire
The Sunset Strip
The Sunset Strip

This is about the Sunset Strip. You're picturing clubbing at twenty-two and deciding you're too old — but that's not the ask. This is the one loud mile where every band you ever loved cut its teeth before anyone knew their name: the Whisky, the Roxy, the Rainbow, the Comedy Store, marquees still buzzing over the same sidewalk that's heard it all. Some nights the air itself feels amplified, like the street remembers every set that ever tore the roof off and is daring tonight to top it. Your people there aren't twenty-two — they're everyone who ever stood where it happened and felt it. Go for one drink and one set. You don't have to close the place down. You just have to be on the mile where it all went down, once, and stop pretending it stopped being yours the day you turned thirty. The marquees are lit right now. Go stand under them. Go.

What you're getting into
  • A rock show at the Whisky a Go Go
  • Stand-up at The Comedy Store
  • Rock memorabilia at the Rainbow Bar & Grill
  • Live bands at the Roxy Theatre
  • Boutiques and cafes at Sunset Plaza
Al pastor from a truck, after dark
Al pastor from a truck, after dark

This is about the truck. Somewhere out there right now, under a bare bulb, a trompo is turning and a line of locals is twenty deep at midnight — and that truck, no address, no sign, is serving the best food in this entire enormous city. Just tacos is what people say who've never stood at the right one. Your people are in that line, and the line is the review — twenty deep past midnight is a verdict nobody could fake, delivered by people who know. What's waiting at home isn't a shortcut; it's a consolation prize you're about to hand yourself. And here's the honest part: you have to hunt for it. The best thing in LA doesn't come to you, doesn't have a website, doesn't deliver. You find the trompo, you find the line, you get in it. It's out there right now, spinning. Go find it and understand why they're all standing there. Go.

What you're getting into
  • Al pastor off the trompo at Leo's Tacos
  • Blue-corn queso tacos at Villa's Tacos
  • Tacos árabes from the Villegas truck
  • Live mariachi at Mariachi Plaza
  • Weekend artisan stalls around the plaza

A one o'clock tip on a Sunday is a brunch with a basketball game attached, and it is the single most underrated arrangement in sport. You eat somewhere downtown at eleven, you are in your seat by half twelve, and you are back out into daylight before four with the entire rest of the day still unspent. Nothing about an evening game gives you that. Afternoon crowds skew younger and noticeably louder, mostly because nobody has spent five hours in a bar beforehand. Washington is not the reason to come and everybody knows it - the reason is the hour, and the hour is excellent. Make a day of it rather than a night of it, and see how much more of the weekend survives the experience. The other quiet advantage is the drive. A one o'clock tip has you leaving the structure at half past three, which is the single easiest hour of the week to get out of downtown.

Jan 26, 2027 Crypto.com Arena, 1111 S Figueroa …

Oklahoma City arrives roughly twice a year and both visits are worth arranging your week around. A team built almost entirely out of players nobody else wanted badly enough, playing a style that is genuinely difficult to defend and even harder to look away from, is the sort of opponent that makes a Tuesday feel like an occasion. The eight o'clock tip is the giveaway: that hour is chosen for a national audience rather than for anybody who has to be at work on Wednesday. The building will be fuller than a January Tuesday has any right to be. Leave late, come straight from work, and accept that Wednesday morning is going to be difficult. Some fixtures are worth the cost and the schedule-makers have already told you which one this is. Buy ahead rather than on the day. National-television fixtures are the one category where the resale market firms up in the final week instead of softening.

Feb 2, 2027 Intuit Dome, 3930 W Century Blvd, …

February is when a season stops being a story and becomes a grind, and the buildings that are still full in the first week of it have earned something. San Antonio arrive with young players who will be the reason people buy tickets in three years and are currently merely extremely good, which is the most interesting possible moment to catch anybody. A half past seven Tuesday tip is the deepest midweek slot there is. This is also the first of two home nights in a row, and the two fixtures could not be less alike - tonight is the quiet one. Come to the quiet one deliberately. You will hear the floor, you will get a seat worth having, and you will see a team before everybody else decides they are worth seeing. Midweek February is also the point where the lower bowl stops being theoretical for most people, and that will not be true again until the season is effectively over.

Second night in two, and this time the building will be full. The team from up the coast is the fixture that sells out here regardless of either club's position, bringing a support that drives down rather than flies and arrives in numbers that genuinely contest the room. The contrast with the previous evening is the whole point: a quiet Tuesday followed immediately by one of the loudest nights of the season, in the same seats, against two completely different ideas of what a visiting crowd is. A Wednesday tip means Thursday will hurt and nobody in the building cares. If you can only do one of the two nights, do this one, and buy earlier than feels necessary because this is not a fixture where the price comes down. Check the parking situation before you leave; a sell-out out here behaves completely differently from the midweek version and the difference is about forty minutes.

Feb 9, 2027 Intuit Dome, 3930 W Century Blvd, …

A rebuilding team is the most honest thing in professional sport. Nobody is pretending, the expectations have been publicly lowered, and what you get instead is a roster of young players with everything still to prove playing with a freedom that better teams cannot afford. Detroit arrive in exactly that state and they are far more watchable for it. February Tuesdays are also the point in the calendar when the seats you have been looking at online stop being theoretical - the casual demand has gone, the building is left to people who actually want to be in it, and the lower bowl becomes a reasonable decision rather than an extravagant one. Come to the quiet part of the season and sit close enough to hear the benches. It is the version of this sport that television has never managed to transmit. Check the lower-bowl prices in the week beforehand rather than on the day; February midweek is the one stretch where they genuinely move in your favour.

By February the derby has stopped being a novelty and turned into a grudge with a record attached. Two meetings have already happened, both sets of supporters remember them in incompatible detail, and the third one arrives with all of that sitting in the building before anybody touches the ball. The thing that makes this fixture unlike any other on the calendar is the commute: the away support is not a travelling contingent, it is the people you work with, driving twelve miles up from Inglewood and the South Bay to sit directly behind you and be insufferable about it. The room genuinely splits, and you hear it on every call that goes the wrong way. A Wednesday tip keeps the price marginally sane for a fixture this size. Go, and pick a side loudly enough that the people around you have to respond to it. Arrive early enough to watch the away section fill in. For this fixture it is the only time all season that a visiting end in this building is made up entirely of people who drove there after work.

Half the concourse is wearing a hundred years of somebody else's history. Detroit supporters travel with a particular confidence - not arrogance exactly, more the settled calm of people whose team was winning things before this city had ice in it. The contrast is the whole attraction. One crowd carrying inherited tradition, one crowd that built its own from nothing in a desert, meeting on a Thursday in February with the season in its serious stretch. Get there early enough to read the sweaters properly. Half of them are older than the people wearing them and several carry names on the back that nobody under thirty in the building will recognise. It is a Thursday, which keeps the price sensible for a fixture with this much history attached, and the building empties fast enough afterwards that you are on the freeway inside twenty minutes. Either way, you leave having watched a game that nobody will replay and that was, for two and a half hours, the only thing happening.

Somewhere in your phone is a note you wrote at two in the morning that you have never shown anyone, and it is either the truest thing you have ever written or completely humiliating, and you genuinely cannot tell which. Most comedy lets you off the hook for that. A smaller, stranger kind refuses to, and you walk out feeling weirdly lighter for having been caught. Amstell built a whole career on that refusal. He was the acid host of a British panel show, quit being merely clever, and went off to make work about shame, family, and wanting to be loved more than is socially acceptable to admit. Hearing it in a two-hundred-eighty-seat room on La Cienega instead of a theatre is the difference between watching a person perform honesty and sitting close enough to see what it costs them. The no-phones rule matters more at this one than at most shows: nobody is clipping the vulnerable part for anyone else's feed. This one starts at 7:30 rather than the room's usual 8, with doors at 7 and will call from 6. Afterwards people stand around on the sidewalk a while, not quite ready to drive home.

The last Friday before the league disappears for a week has a particular restlessness to it. Everybody in the building knows the break is coming, the players are visibly aware of it, and whatever happens here has to last everybody nine days. Denver is the worst possible opponent to meet in that state - a genuinely elite side whose best player does things with a pass that only make sense from a seat where you can see the whole floor at once, which is the single strongest argument for going in person rather than watching. The half past seven tip is late enough to eat downtown first properly rather than hurriedly. Come to the one before the gap. The building always has more in it when there is nothing scheduled behind the fixture. Worth checking the injury news on the morning of a pre-break game, too - rested stars are far more common in the forty-eight hours before a league shutdown than at any other point in the calendar.

Somebody's grandfather marched in this. That is the thing that gets you, standing on Hill Street in the early afternoon holding a paper flag: not the lions or the drums, but the arithmetic. A hundred and twenty-eight years means a parade that predates the freeways, the studios, and most of the city it moves through. It turns off Hill at Temple, runs toward Bernard, cuts right onto Broadway and comes back down to where it started, and the crowd along that route is three generations deep in places, holding curb seats they claimed an hour early with folding chairs. The Year of the Goat gets its welcome a week after the new year proper, which is both traditional and practical, since by then everyone has already eaten. One to four in the afternoon, Saturday February 13, in Chinatown. Free. Chinatown runs on this calendar all year long and most of Los Angeles never once thinks to check it.

A three o'clock face-off on the Saturday before Valentine's Day is either excellent planning or an accident, and either way it works. You get the whole thing done in daylight, you are out by half past five, and the evening - whatever obligation it holds - is entirely intact and you can arrive at it having already had a good day. Afternoon hockey also draws a different crowd: more families, fewer people treating the building as a bar with a game attached. Chicago brings its own travelling contingent and a century of history it is more than happy to explain to you. Make it the first half of a day rather than the whole of a night, and go into Sunday having already banked something. Parking fills earlier than you expect for an afternoon game because nobody has adjusted their habits to a daylight face-off, so leave half an hour more than instinct tells you and you will walk in relaxed.

Los Angeles Kings vs. Calgary Flames
Feb 15, 2027 Crypto.com Arena, 1111 S Figueroa …

A holiday Monday is a Saturday wearing a disguise, and almost nobody plans for it properly. Most of the city treats the third Monday in February as a day to sleep through, which leaves the freeways empty, the restaurants quiet and an entire hockey game sitting there in the evening for anybody who noticed. Calgary is in town, which means the away end will be busier than the date suggests - Canadians in Southern California have an unerring instinct for these fixtures. The building on a holiday has a loose, forgiving feel: nobody is rushing anywhere afterwards and nobody has to be up especially early. Use the day off on something you will remember rather than on catching up with the washing. The other advantage of a holiday fixture is that the building is full of people who are not watching the clock, so the concourse stays busy between periods instead of emptying out, and the whole night runs slower and better for it.

The sweaters are everywhere in the concourse and almost nobody wearing one has ever been to Illinois. Chicago is the single visiting club that still travels on reputation alone - three decades after the era that built it, the away end here is louder than the current standings could possibly justify, filled largely by people with no connection to the city whatsoever. It is a faintly absurd thing to witness and it happens every single time they come. A Tuesday in the middle of February also lands in the stretch where everybody is counting down to the break, which loosens the whole evening: nobody is treating it as consequential and the basketball is better for it. Prices for a midweek February fixture are among the softest left on the calendar. If you have wanted to sit somewhere you could not previously justify, this is one of the two or three nights where the arithmetic finally works.

A second eight o'clock tip inside three months is a pattern rather than an accident: somebody with a broadcast contract has decided this building looks good late at night, and they are not wrong. The arena was designed to be photographed - a ring of screen overhead that is impossible to ignore, a bowl that funnels sound down onto the floor, lighting that makes the court look like it is floating. At eight o'clock on a Tuesday all of that is running at full tilt for a crowd that had to really want it. Houston play fast enough that the late start never drags. The practical note is that the 405 has finished its worst by half past seven, so the drive in is the easiest it gets all week. Eat before you drive out, too. Very little around the building is still serving by the time a late tip finishes, which catches out almost everybody on a first visit.

Two nights, two opponents, one set of legs. The second game of a home back-to-back is where a roster stops being a list of names and becomes a set of decisions - who rests, who plays twenty-eight minutes having played thirty-four last night, which rotation a coach is prepared to abandon in public. It is far more interesting than it sounds and it is completely invisible on a highlight package. Chicago travel on reputation alone, which means an away end louder than the standings could justify and a building with more in it than a February Wednesday deserves. Prices for the second of a pair are reliably the softest of the week. Take the tired night: the basketball is messier and the decisions behind it are better. Worth checking both tip times if you are considering the pair, because consecutive home games are frequently scheduled at different hours and more people are caught by that than anything else.

This is the last night before the league simply stops. No games for over a week, nothing to follow, nothing to argue about, and a building full of people who are aware that the next time they are in it the season will have changed shape. That awareness gives a February Thursday a strange weight it has not earned. Houston play fast enough to make a flat night impossible, which helps. The other thing worth knowing is that the roster you watch tonight is not necessarily the one that comes back - the trade deadline has passed but the buyout market has not, and squads are quietly different on the other side of a break. Go to the last one before the gap, and spend the week off arguing about what you saw. Parking and traffic both behave on a February Thursday, which is a small thing until you compare it with trying to do the same journey on a Friday in December.

By late February you can read a season off the faces in the lower bowl. Either the thing is alive and every point matters and the building is tense in a way it simply was not in October, or it is over and what is left is the pure, uncomplicated pleasure of watching people who are very good at something do it in front of you. Both are worth the Saturday. This is the second visit from Seattle in five weeks and division games at this point in the calendar stop being routine, because everybody in the room can do the arithmetic. Go now rather than in April. February seats cost what February seats cost; the same game in a playoff race does not. If the race is alive by then this becomes one of the hardest tickets of the back half of the season, and the only reliable way to be in the room is to have decided about it in February rather than in April.

The sweaters give it away before you have reached your row. More championships than any club in the sport, a following that has spread across the continent over a century, and a particular kind of supporter who will talk to you unprompted about a team they have never lived near. Montreal visiting is the closest a regular Wednesday gets to an occasion. For the home crowd it is a measuring stick and a slight irritation in equal parts, which makes the noise in the building sharper than the fixture deserves. Come for the thing that does not translate to television: a room where two completely different ideas of what a hockey club is for are sitting four seats apart and both convinced. Get there for the warmup and watch which end of the ice the away support has gathered behind. It tells you more about how the night will sound than anything in the programme does.

The week back from the break is the strangest of the year. Everybody has had nine days off, nobody is quite in rhythm, rosters have quietly changed around the edges, and the first few games afterwards are played by teams that are visibly working out what they now are. Utah are a familiar conference opponent and the sort of side that punishes anybody still half on holiday. What makes late February worth attending is that the standings have become arithmetic by now - everybody in the building is doing the same sums three or four games ahead, and a Thursday that looks ordinary on paper carries real weight by the fourth quarter. Come back to the building when the league does. There is a particular sharpness to the restart that the rest of the calendar never has. Keep an eye on the injury news in the days beforehand as well; the week back from a break is when rested players and newly signed ones both turn up without much warning.

The last day of February is the quiet hinge of a season. Behind it is the long grind nobody enjoys; ahead is the part where every result changes a standing and the building starts watching a second scoreboard. A Sunday evening tip sits neatly on that line. Portland are the oldest continuous argument on this coast, a rivalry that outsiders have never noticed and both cities have never dropped, which gives an otherwise unremarkable date some edge. Sunday out here also means the roads behave and the lots clear in minutes, which is not nothing after a long week. Go on the last evening of the month and watch a season change gear in real time, because it genuinely does and it happens roughly now every single year. Sunday also means you are out of the lots inside fifteen minutes, which is the single biggest practical difference between a weekend and a weeknight game out here.

March arrives and the whole building starts watching a different scoreboard. The one in the corner showing other people's results becomes as important as the one above the floor, conversations in the concourse turn into arithmetic, and a crowd that spent December enjoying itself spends March calculating. It is a completely different experience of the same sport. Brooklyn are not the reason to come and nobody will pretend they are - the reason is a building that has started to care, on a Thursday, at the point in the year when caring begins. Tickets for an unglamorous opponent in a tense month are the best value combination available. Sit wherever you can afford and spend the evening listening to several thousand people do mental maths out loud. Arrive early enough to find the out-of-town scoreboard from your seat before the game starts, because from March onwards you will be looking at it more than you expect to.

Nobody buys a ticket for this one because of the opponent, and that is precisely what makes it worth having. A Friday in March against a club most of the building could not name three players from is the purest version of going to a hockey game: no narrative, no grudge, no visiting celebrity, just two teams and a sheet of ice and whatever happens over two and a half hours. The room is full of people who came because it is Friday and this is what they do on Fridays. Prices for a fixture like this are the gentlest you will find all season, which means the good seats are genuinely reachable for once. Take the money you saved and spend it on sitting ten rows lower than you normally would. You will spend the entire evening noticing things that the upper bowl flattens into nothing, starting with how violent the game actually is at close range.

Oklahoma City returns for the second time in six weeks, which is the schedule doing everybody a favour for once. A team assembled almost entirely from players other franchises did not want badly enough, playing a style that is difficult to defend and close to impossible to look away from, is worth seeing twice in a season rather than once. The half past five tip on a Saturday is the single most useful slot in the week - early enough that the evening afterwards is completely intact, late enough that the day before it was not wasted waiting around. March also means the standings have become arithmetic and everybody in the building is doing the same sums three games ahead. Come for the version of this fixture where both sides actually need the result. A late-afternoon Saturday also means the restaurants downtown are empty when you come out, which is the reverse of the usual arrangement and considerably more pleasant.

One o'clock on a Sunday in March is the best-kept secret on the entire calendar. The building is bright and loud and finished by half past three, the freeways have not yet filled with people going home from the beach, and the rest of the day afterwards is enormous and completely unplanned. Colorado is a serious opponent, one of the handful of clubs that turns an ordinary afternoon into a proper test, and by March a game against them has consequences attached whether or not anybody announces it. Afternoon crowds skew younger and considerably more vocal, partly because nobody has spent four hours in a bar first. Bring somebody who thinks hockey is incomprehensible and sit them close to the glass for the first period. The speed is the entire argument, and it is the one thing that is impossible to convey until a body hits the boards six feet from your face.
